  1. Good to see we're back on the "SMU snubs us" bs, which was true last century, but hasn't been true in a long time. You don't sign agreements until practically 2040 with schools you're trying to suppress. It was already out of date when I joined this board in 2003, now it's just sad. With Houston and UCF gone, any realignment among the G5 is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The AAC's new media deal will be as trash as CUSA's and SBC's. For some schools in the AAC, that will be a real problem - both Tulane and Tulsa rely on that revenue to keep their programs afloat. For teams like Rice, moving to the AAC would question their entire program - the donors already think it's a loss-leader, widening the loss by flying over teams to play at Navy won't make things any better. If I'm Judy, I pull a preemptive strike for regionalism, and immediately invite Texas State and Louisiana. At that point, any CUSA team in the West would be foolish to trade all those in-state schools for the opportunity to play at ECU. Then, maybe, the commissioners of the AAC, CUSA and SBC can sit down and come up with a model that will keep the G5 afloat.
  2. I believe that the team from a Dallas suburb will score a lot and win.
  3. The only reason the offense has more yards than the band is because the band just stood around for halftime.
  4. Same thing I've heard. My uncle was set for a pretty important (life-saving level) surgery last Wednesday, and they stopped the procedure during prep because there wasn't an open recovery bed in EP or Cruces. It's really, really bad out there and I would totally understand if the game were delayed or even cancelled. And then they got a half inch of snow this morning.
  5. It is possible for players to change and grow, sometimes incredibly quick. Bean may have just done that. For some players, riding the bench, blowing their first chance, or even having to transfer is exactly what is needed. A QB does more than hurl footballs. A QB runs the team, and the character and mood of the QB often is reflected in the rest of the offense. We saw a great example of that tonight. This wasn’t just a different player after Bean went in, it was a different team. You can’t chalk that up to a player just having a good night. What I really suspect happened is that Seth stuck with his original scheme for a respectable amount of time. A coach which allows his plan to be upended by one or two games isn’t a very good coach. He had his scheme, he had his caller, and he had his plan. After Charlotte, it was on thin ice, players were getting restless (both happy Seth wasn’t giving up on Aune but worried that it wasn’t going to work out) and once it became obvious that it wasn’t getting any better tonight, he blew it up. He decided to put in someone different, call a different scheme (which was pretty obviously prepared before the game - he knew that he might be doing this), and... it worked. That’s a good coach. A less capable coach would either have kept doing the same thing while drinking more Diet Coke, or decided to use the first excuse to let his son take over and make a good player transfer. Seth announced Aune as the starter today, but with the intention of him playing a few series and subbing in Bean. That worked very well. Now it’s Bean’s to keep.
  6. The Universe is doing you a favor. Don't anger it. This is how I've felt since HBU. Aune is always short or way overhead - Darden had almost as much yardage running back to the ball as he had in gains last game (hyperbole, ofc, but still...), Bean is questionable too. But this is three turnovers now in a quarter. We have 6 quarterbacks. Time to start shopping.
  7. This is smart. Baseball is an idea that, despite UNT having been sniffing for donors now for 15 years, just doesn’t have enough interest to justify the expense of another stadium. If we’re going to add a sport, we need 1) something different than just doing baseball like everyone does, 2) something popular with incoming students, 3) something which requires minimal new facilities if travel is going to be an issue, 4) something that reaches into the prep school pipeline, because money, 5) less important, something with either no competition in the region, or that has one other team we could rival. To me, that means one of three options. Lacrosse, ice hockey, or men’s soccer. The first 2 would be unique in the region much less the state. The last two are equally or more popular with younger generations. The facilities for two are already built, and if we’re building a new HyperPit anyway, just an add-on to something we already have to do. Aside from American rules football, both Association and Rugby Union rules are very popular in the preps, and if they want to stay close to home, lacrosse and ice hockey players are SOL currently. Two of those make us the only game in the state, and the third further cements competition with SMU. Baseball hasn’t happened yet because it just doesn’t offer anything new aside from another sport to be mediocre in, and the donors reflect that.
  8. At least our offense would score and our defense wouldn’t give one up.
  9. Not gonna happen in fall. The major CFB states - CA, TX, OH, FL, need to be open by the end of May for that to happen. I'd expect a Feb-June season, then an Oct-Feb, then a normal. Problem isn't only the fans, it's what happens when players inevitably turn up with infections. NCAA does need to start in the academic year to get paid by broadcasters, although ironically given how little CUSA teams get out of media rights, and how much of our rights are streaming compared to others, the conference is actually better siTUated than other conferences with Larger diStributions Allowing for Teams which woULd be Almost always iN the rEd.
  10. If we want into the American Conference, we need to act like we belong. So in the finest UCF and SMU traditions, NATIONAL CHAMPS!!!! WOOOOO!!!!
  11. Dykes' roll of the dice was a one-trick pony. Everybody's onto the transfer for a year game now, and that market is already far more competitive for next year's transfers. I remember Todd Dodge. Let's not make that mistake ever again.
  12. They did “Main Title” from Star Trek (2009) after Zarathustra.
  13. It’s as bad as when Saddam somehow convinced Satan that he had changed and was no longer a sandy little butthole. I mean, Rice & UTSA... Absolute truth. I’ve lost count how many times Mason has had to recover from a bad snap this year. Atrocious. Anyone who was in the stadium for that first half was the greatest loser. They played Giacchino. They can do no wrong.
  14. Combining the bands and the dancers, UH bringing their full band this time, stadium nearly selling out, and making sure a few lege members see it... ...UNT and UH are getting much better at playing the game in Austin. Terrible night on the field, but great night for both politically.
  15. I don’t think it was playcalling. The 2 point try’s I’m fine with. Especially the first one, card definitely says go there. When your players can’t tackle, there’s not much else you can do.
  16. Nobody watches the PAC12, and nobody cares about a 1-1 CUSA team. So yeah, I can understand lumping us with UT@ and Texas State. As the article said, we all play each other to some extent, so it will shake out starting on Saturday.
  17. There was a discussion about 10 years-ish ago as to whether UNT would pursue growth at all costs to get an impressive size, or whether we would up admissions standards to get better future donors, and shunt the students to UTA, UNTD and UNTF. I was firmly on the "standards" end, because the quality of student you attract is directly related to their buy-in to the university as a whole. Note this only holds for admission, and not performance thereafter - pretty much every development pro will tell you that your best donors tend to be B-C students. I also supported it because I like what the Texas system does to bolster their @ schools, and would like to replicate it with Dallas and Frisco (and eventually MSU and... that other university in Denton, once the blue hairs defending both leave the Lege). Home campus needs to cap at 40k to allow the other campuses a chance.
  18. SMU faced a good defense for half a game, and a good offense for half a game. What they haven't seen is a great offense for a full game. There's no reason to let up in this one as opposed to our game with ACU. On the contrary, SMU had to pull out all the stops to keep I-n-d-i-a-n-s from meaning victory. Sorry. Red Wolves. And somehow, gave up 300 yards against that offense. If they give that much up against ASU... dear gods... So I've got UNT winning against the O/U in this game. UNT - 77 SMU - 63
  19. I usually take the train to SMU games, and since I'm usually the only one there, I can confidently say my entire section of Ford does, too. Parking is much more of a headache at SMU, so it's usually worth the transfer.
  20. There was a noticeable improvement, I'd note especially the song selection while in the stands, which was great. Remaining kind criticisms: 1) why no Texas, Our Texas; 2) I don't like the handholding with what to do next... i.e. "Now we will do the song thing. Now we will do the chant thing. Now we will do the stand-y thing." Seems too forced. 3) UNT needs more unique pieces, like Fanfare. A music school shouldn't be using the same band cheers as everyone else. Those are very, very small criticisms, though. Well done to all.
  21. I imagine Reeder's made some changes and ain't going to show them this weekend. UNT - 24 ACU - 10 Attendance: 26138 (68973 for any SMU fans already here)
  22. The ice will still be frozen on Saturday despite it already being delivered?
  23. Please gods do not tempt the ghost of the first year eagle scream at Fouts. She is a mighty annoying beast.
  24. Well then, If it's "class" we're worried about, we should follow the example of my graduate institution, which, aside from being the most esteemed and upper-crust group of a-holes in existence, in many ways literally set the expectations for fight songs. Permit me to quote: ... well, I can't. The third verse of the 10000 Men is so lurid that even though it's in pig Latin, it's still obvious. And while our football team is now better than that, as an institution, we still have a long way to go. Behold! A reasonable solution! Perish the thought! It's not classless, and it's the expected norm for sports. The last two words of the title of the fight song is "of Harvard." And while I dislike some of their products, and no one has thought less of their graduates because the entire stadium, led by the band, sings about multiple sexual liaisons in public. ...and in addition to our betters offering the same example, a quick reminder - that vulgar, unacceptable verse was written by young, irresponsible whippersnappers in... 1949. College football is part of and inseparable from our culture, which was created by our forebears. Each generation should build on it, which is how traditions form. We need a tradition of people caring, and we need a tradition of a good entrance to the stadium. Part of building both is taking both the baby and the bathwater.
