  1. No kidding. The mall update is critical to improving the quality of life on campus through improving the look of the campus. It's inconvienient as heck if your going from Willis to ESSC, sure.
  2. SMU fans have a lot to be happy about right now, so 8K or 9K on Halloween is fine. Disappointing, to be sure, but the days at the Cotton Bowl with all of Dallas there are far behind (although three weeks of good football matchups in the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair might help bring that back (SMU-UNT, TCU-UNT, SMU-TCU)). The TV exposure was great and Ford looked good. Reminds me of our Troy game last year on the Deuce - bad attendence (for NT that's 14k or so) but national exposure. Craig James wanted SMU to get out of I-A, at least. He should be forced to suffer the ultimate punishment: strapped in a car on Mockingbird during rush hour. SouthernMustang is right - ultimately, the gain of one Metroplex team should be reflected by everyone else. A world would be better with consistent UNT, SMU and TCU teams.
  3. I'm gonna cry. So very true. This thread is still relevant, because the DD argument is still ongoing.
  4. SMU's law school is pretty much worthless. Working in a law office with a pony grad, he's constantly talking about how poorly prepared SMU grads are for the actual legal field. And that's not just one...i've heard it often. Also, Eagle66 is right, outside of Dallas an SMU law degree does nothing more than a standard one for you. Also, don' pay any heed to the US News Rankings - ever. As the Law School Admit Council says itself, and pretty clearly... LSAC Page...go to Rankings.
  5. The law school has to be in Downtown Dallas. That was our area's legislatures' requirement for us to get the school. It's all but a done deal. Senator West said in class a few days ago that he has plenty of votes, and it WILL happen next session. The City of Dallas will contribute $ 20 million to the renovation of the building, and The State will contribute $20 million more. The Cost to UNT will be minimal. It is still not decided wether or not it will be UNT or UNTD. Most likely it will be part of the Downtown Dallas extension of UNT Denton when UNT takes over the University center for the downtown campus announced in the DMN on monday. As for the Wesleyan rumors, that fell through because TCU didn't have the money, and UNT could not affiliate/buy outright a private school. Courts struck that option down when they refused to let TAMU buy South Texas College of Law a few years ago in Houston.
  6. This needs to be tatooed on every poster on this board. I don't think that DD can coach worth a damn. Our facilities in football suck, our attendence is bad and we need a better conference.... But as far as my support for the team and the univerity, read that quote. Stick with it...there's an up after a down...
  7. I love the "swing" version of the fight song. Both OK state and Arkansas use it to spice up otherwise boring or mundane fight songs.. National Anthem is great....but where's Texas, our Texas? The half-hearted Deep in the heart of texas was good, but UNT needs to push a bit more of a "Texas" identity, as we are the only Texas school in the SBC. More unique songs are always a plus. Fly Like an Eagle is good...but I think we need something recognizable. All in all, the Green Brigade's always good. Even when the team sucks.
  8. An NCAA-friendly 15,123.
  9. It was....wierdly fun for anyone who was there...the storming of the field was more a spontaneous desire to thank the players for sticking in there for 7 ots. Our program is in trouble, but we do not need to find the dark cloud next to every silver lining, people.....we ain't smooo. The play calling was horrible (option goes nowhere, draw almost nowhere, WR screen=interception, WR slants = 10 yard gain.....i know which one i'd pick more of) and for that coaching changes need be made. For now, though, enjoy this....any win.
  10. The Downtown, Clear Lake and Victoria campuses are all seperate and distinct campuses in the UH system. The Dallas campus is actually just a "center" (akin to SMU's "center" in Legacy) and until it becomes a seperate entity it is included in UNT's "expanded" enrollment. The HSC is a "Special Professional" school as is UH's Medical arm (Opthamology at UNT vs. Optometery at UH), an since UH includes 'em in their numbers, I did the same.
  11. Houston (2005, minus "Special Professional" and Center #s): 33227 UNT (2006, minus "Special Professional" and Center #s): 33550 Houston (2005, all inclusive (under, grad, and doctor plus law and medicine)): 35180 UNT (2006& 2005, all inclusive (U,G & D plus HSC and Dallas center)): 36134 So it's in Houston's court. Did they increase enrollment by 1000? Only time will tell. *Note that UH includes law in its final numbers, I have included the HSC for the same reason.
  12. The Sun Belt had a good night overall. All but a few had good, competitive games, and UNT gets the Safeway Cart. A big good job to the Sun Belt (well, most of it. I'm looking at you ULLAF, Arky State and FAU.)
  13. Yep. Clearly there is a major O-line problem. Several times El Presidente (Woody) got tripped up by the C or G.And Jamario's performance is horrible as a result. Thank god defense wins championships. These guys eat glass. The horribly named "Green Curtain" is back, if still a little shaky. Now let's murder Tulsa, we need a CUSA invite.
  14. Good game for us, and according to some Pony fans, they were reasonably well treated pre- and post- game. So don't go over and be classless. I was at the game right on the NT/SMU line....and I gotta say, it was tough looking at some of those Pony Alums. They'd gone to SMU in the 60's and 70's, when they ran the SWC.....and now they're getting their rears handed to them by NT. Having said that, I hope someone hides all the bleach in UP. It might end up in the water supply. Great win for us, tough loss for them. I feel like I just kicked an old guy in a wheelchair. Apt description of SMU.
  15. Great Post! Darn you for getting one of about 100 shady seats, though. OSU's gonna kill Texas, and if we can score, we'll beat smoo.
  16. Agreed. What you said is a load of crap. I too don't know where to start, so I will generalize. ATHLETICS: If any of you dislike the conference you're in, or are tired of getting pasted: Show us the money. A high end program isn't free, and money talks (look at perennial loser Louisville after Papa John's). If you are not a member of the MGC, if you are not talking up the university (even with BS if you have to, SMU's gotten by since the late 80's with it), if you are not attending or are not active alumni, you are not helping, and really shouldn't be talking. Realize athletics (or a history in athletics) are not everything. If that was the case, relatively poor schools like Florida, Arizona State and SMU would be highly "ranked" schools,.....oh....well, that brings us to: ACADEMICS: Many universities have a secret. They publish their "rankings" but know this: According to LSAC, the law school applications council: "As Newsweek editor Kenneth Auchincloss said, “Rankings generate huge hype, which is far more likely to serve the publisher’s purpose than the readers’…. Applicants need help in widening their knowledge of schools that may be right for them, not narrowing their choices according to a ranking system.” A ranking system that exemplifies the shortcomings of all “by the numbers” schemes is the one produced annually by U.S. News & World Report. While ignoring the variables listed above, as do all numbers-based ranking systems, the U.S. News rankings purport to be derived from mathematical formulae based on data common to all undergraduate and law schools. The “weights” attached to the variables are arbitrary and reflect only the view of the magazine’s editors. For example, according to the magazine, 40 percent of the rankings is based on each school’s “reputation.” In short, it's bullshit. What's worse, everyone knows that. The Universities know that, US News knows it, Barnes & Noble knows it, and the ad execs who get money from Universities in order to be featured in the Report know it. The actual ranking system generally used is the Carnegie Classification. You'll have trouble finding it for most schools, as most don't like to give theirs out. Just go to www.carnegiefoundation.org to look it up. The best "rank" is the most encompassing: RU/H Research Universities (high research activity) or RU/VH: Research Universities (very high research activity). Out of the thousands of Colleges, Unis and Community colleges in the US, only 103 meet RU/H and 90 meet RU/VH. Here's a real list: RU/H: Baylor University, New Mexico State University-Main Campus, Northern Arizona University, Oklahoma State University-Main Campus, Texas Tech University, University of Houston-University Park, University of North Texas, University of Oklahoma Norman Campus, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Tulsa RU/VH: Rice University, Texas A & M University, University of New Mexico-Main Campus, University of Texas at Austin Anyone notice who's missing? (think ponies and mockingbirds, or sexually active frogs) In short: These rankings are nothing more than popularity games, and are entirely irrelevant. They are "reputation" based and have not standing in fact. Be positive, know the facts, and be willing to brag. It's what being a Texan is all about.
  17. I was there in the stands with a group of Texas fans and a group of Greenies, plus a pony for fun. I have the peeling skin to prove it. OFFENCE: I Texas' defense wasn't that good. You should be able to score from the 8. But, seven points on the national champs while totally outclassed. Not bad, considering. We'll have to see the SMU game to get a good reading. Thus, an incomplete, as Kirk H said, you just can't judge Texas against North Texas....two totally different worlds. "Very Special" TEAMS: WF Never showed up to class. Often gave UT possesion on our end, making our defenses' jobs impossible. The size of the loss is entirely, completely their fault. DEFENCE: B+ Did a great job against impossible odds. Hung with UT until the 4th (when even Texas fans couldn't make it through Texas Fight because of the heat). Gave up plenty of points, but when you have to defend starting from your own 40, It's tough. Poor tackling, but what you'd expect against texas, a win? COACHING: B- Showed new looks on offence and defence, and kept things interesting. Dickey draw plays down signifigantly. Should have been able to get the special teams working, and to anticipate a few surprises. Mack Brown was right in his postgame: NT showed a lot of unexpected stuff, and were a better opponent than last time. Feelin' pretty good for the ponies.
  18. Texas outclassed us. We weren't big enough to tackle, we weren't quick enough to get there, and we didn't have a winning attitude, which is understandable. We'll be fine against the ponies. When Arky starts their I-A schedule, we'll talk to them.
  19. Arky beat ARMY. Yes, I-A independent ARMY. They aren't a rival, they sure ain't ranked, and they tore down the posts. Sad. This would be the equivalent of us bringing them down for beating Tennessee-Martin. SMU is a very legit rival, thus it's good. And on bringing the down at Ford.....absolutely! They'll be plenty more of us.
  20. Hey, If we weren't the" Forest, no Kelly Mean Green Eagles" maybe announcers would have an easier time of it. We need to settle on one identity, and RV has done that. It will take time, though. At least they all but two times got the name right. As for name recognition, beat a Big 12 team (no, Baylor don't count.)
  21. Entirely true. Hey, it counts.
  22. I'd want to play teams with which we could develop a rival-type relationship. This obviously requires that we be competitive, have some history involved or have a recruiting motivation. ACC - North Carolina. Hardly a good choice here, but at least the marketing (UNC v. UNT) writes itself. In a good year, competitive. Big 12- Texas Tech. There's history, a state school rivalry, and we've been either competitive or lucky in the past. Call it the 380 series. Big East - South Florida. Recruiting. Big 10 - Northwestern. We'd have a chance at being competitive, and exposure in a big market. CUSA - 4-way tie. SMU, UTEP, Houston and Memphis all offer compelling reasons. IND - Notre Dame. Thanks for the paycheck, watch NBC. MAC - Northern Illinois. A good matchup for the last several years. Both are "north" and both are 30 mins. outside of major markets. An interesting idea. Mountain West - TCU. Easy. PAC 10 - Bottom-six pick'em. No real advantages to any mid- to bottom team in this conference. SEC - Tennessee. Some history, good exposure and a decent way to piss off MUTS. WAC - NMSU. Plenty o' history. Good matchup.
  23. But they are anti-business and very conservative (the "don't change 'nuthin" crowd). Starbucks started as a one-location local coffee shop. Barnes & Noble started as a student bookstore owned by students. But what happens when the people owning these small businesses become successful? They're shouted down by hippie conservatives who want to protect businesses which pay less in taxes, employ less people, are less charitable and create less value for cities just like Denton. And it's a very good thing for UNT as well. My high school didn't get hundreds of computers from Joe's Local Computer Shoppe, Microsoft donated tham. SMU didn't get its bookstore bailed out and jobs saved by the head shop down Mockingbird, Barnes & Noble bought them out. And UNT won't get massive "community relations" donations from Uncommon Grounds. Seems Starbucks did donate enough to SMU to end up with an ad spot in Ford Stadium.....maybe here as well. It's not Denton's responsibility to make things "homey" for temporary residents (college students). And its in Denton's interest to become like Lewisville. If people actually believe this crap about "charm" and "personality", move to Detroit, or buy a low rent house with no air-conditioning in rural Mexico. Ya know, shaneb's right. This is BS my friends.
  24. A summary: RANK -- TEAM -- GAMES -- AVERAGE Sun Belt: 90. TROY 5 19425 93. ARKANSAS ST 6 18381 95. UL LAF 5 17591 97. NORTH TEXAS 5 16446 105. UL MONROE 5 14617 106. MTSU 5 14526 F_U are "Reclassifying teams", their numbers are not provided with the rest. Area Schools similar in stature: 44. UTEP 6 47899 50. OKLAHOMA ST 6 44861 63. BAYLOR 5 38899 74. TCU 5 31254 83. TULSA 5 22826 92. SMU 6 18630 98. LOUISIANA TECH 5 16416 103. HOUSTON 6 15054 114. RICE 5 10072 So, not a horrible year for us, given the record. Big showing out of UTEP (easy when you own the market) and Rice should be on life support. Here's the link: http://www.ncaa.org/stats/football/attenda..._attendance.pdf
