  1. Funny how nobody deals with the actual point I'm making, which is a guy who's supposed to be a coach is a lousy competitor. Petrino in a tough game. Arkansas is behind against a top SEC opponent. "C'mon, guys, don't quit on me now! Wait, hold on a sec. Got an important call. Could be Ole Miss calling me back. Gotta have options if we lose, you know." I don't care that he screwed over an owner, but arguing that it's NOT crappy just because the owners make money is stupid, especially given that he had guaranteed money there to the tune of $24 million himself. I'm the last guy talking about milk and cookies and poor anybody. In FACT, that's the counter-argument, that this guy who's moving his family every year is doing what's best for THEM all of the sudden. AND I shouldn't say he's not a competitor simply because he knew he didn't have the ability to actually turn Atlanta into a winner (in other words, he can't coach) and skeedaddled out of town, all the time LYING about it? Don't call him names, people whine. Why? He sucks. Here's a message from new Arkansas Head Coach Bobby Petrino (their desperation 2nd choice, btw): "Hey guys, I would say to compete and try to excel, like any other coach, but, more realistically, you should really just try to find a level at which you already know you can be successful. Better to be a big fish in a small pond. But just know, if it gets tough, you can always run away." Petrino is rightfully getting raked over the coals nationally, which is gonna hurt his ability to recruit to Arkansas, which DID just lose a ton of weapons and has a hard enough time in the SEC. If I were an Arkansas fan, I'd actually be very worried right now. And for someone who seemingly hates Jerry Jones so much, Lonnie seems to be a big fan of the deal he just helped orchestrate for his beloved Arkansas.
  2. Yeah, a guy who's never kept a job more than 4 years is doing it to give his family long-term security. Petrino moves around like nobody's business. Go read his coaching resume. The only reason he was at Louisville the whole 4 years is his campaign for the Auburn job came to an end when they didn't dump Tuberville. Kids don't owe anything. I like how all of the sudden we CAN compare them, when all year long people say you can talk endless amounts of garbage about a coach because he gets PAID to do his job. This is a guy who signed a multi-million dollar contract to coach a team and quit because he sucked at it and no one liked him. Moving your family around all the time isn't good for them. Was Louisville not a good situation for him? Why did he keep trying to get out of that one? Oh, right, for his family. He would've had long-term security at Atlanta if he weren't a terrible coach. And he DID have a contract. BTW, coach's contracts in the NFL ARE GUARANTEED, unlike players. It's unlikely they would've gotten rid of Petrino in the next few years, if only because they would've had to pay off the remainder of his $24 million contract. So the security line for a guy who's never stayed in one place very long is complete garbage. But you're right... poor guy. First he did what was best for his family by dumping on the new 10-year, $25 million contract Louisville had given him the year before to corral his wandering eyes, and now he's gotta save his family again by moving them out of their most recent short-term housing in Atlanta.
  3. What if TD came in here, said what he said, had the season he had, yesterday said "I'm gonna take care of it," and then today said "Sorry, guys, I'm gonna go back to coach high school?"
  4. You know what would make a terrible doctor? A guy who runs out of the room in the middle of an operation because he realizes it's way hard and he can't hack it. I'd call him a wuss, too. Even if he sucks at his job, he better hang in there and at least TRY to save the guy's life. But we already said, football's not really that important, not like doctoring at all, which is a weird thing to say on a board where people are ridiculed if they put other things in their lives above being at every UNT sports game. I like how you've already determined he's doing this BECAUSE he's a family man and decided it was best to uproot his family again so he could take another job. I have no fear that Dodge turns tail and runs, because you can see the guy is a competitor and wants to win. If things keep going south with him, and he eventually resigns because he realizes it's just not gonna work, then I have no problems with it. I don't consider that a weakness, because the guy's ALREADY put in more effort than Petrino did in Atlanta. Dodge didn't give up in week 3, coast for a while, and quit in his first season after saying he was gonna turn the program around. He didn't come out 30 minutes before and start talking about what he was gonna do. He didn't sit down with RV and say "I'm still your guy" and then turn in his resignation 24 hours later. And I hope Petrino doesn't think it's gonna be all wine and roses at Arkansas. Has anyone told him he's lost 5 starters on defense, their two best WR, DMac, AND Jones? RUN, BOBBY, RUN!
  5. No, because then he's not trying, which is basically what's wrong with him anyway. Gotta take the easier road. If he wanted to be a man, he would've come in and said (with sincerity and NOT while he was looking for his next gig), that he was gonna come in and turn the thing around. That tomorrow it would be a new team because he was gonna make it happen. Maybe he'd fail at it because he doesn't know what he's doing, but it wouldn't be from lack of effort. I don't know if you've heard, but football is a competitive sport. COMPETITION is the name of the game. If you don't wanna be a world beater, go work at Starbucks. Right now, he's a potentially good coach who lacks the stones to compete, which is worse to me than a terrible coach who tries his best and honors committments. This year he was a terrible coach who saw the writing on the wall, because he helped with the punctuation.
  6. He's a coach. Yeah, it gets harder, but the life is the life. He didn't know what he was getting into, he should find another profession. He got rid of some of his weapons and he grossly mismanaged a good number of the rest of them. He had a hand in dealing with all these tragic and horrible events that befell him, and, AS THE HEAD COACH, it was his responsibility to deal with it. If he's having health and family problems, he should take some time off, not leapfrog to a big-time SEC program. As for Vick, I would've probably thought it okay if he resigned right when it happened, but he went through week 13 without him. What? Did he not know it would be hard without Vick? What if Vick had gotten hit by a bus? Should he quit then? Seriously, should Todge quit? If Petrino didn't know what HE was getting into, then Todge surely didn't and y'all would all support him if he'd run out the door and back to high school. I don't even like the Falcons. I just think the guy is a wuss and can't compete, and when things were difficult he turned tail and ran. I'm SURE it was all too much for him, because he's a wuss. Good riddance.
  7. If they did it on TV and you saw how they lost control and had no idea what they were doing and looked like a deer in the headlights, I'd hope you wouldn't even give them an interview. FACT: College is a huge step down from the NFL.
  8. He wouldn't stay here 3 years. If he wanted a guaranteed contract, he should've STAYED in college football. Everyone around here quotes Hawkins all the time on his infamous rant. How about: THIS IS THE NFL! IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT, GO COACH AT ARKANSAS! It's not a mystery what life is like in the NFL. Petrino ran away like a little punk, pure and simple.
  9. It doesn't have anything to do with college or the NFL being a family. It has to do with a guy not being a competitor and rolling over when things are difficult. The REAL problem is this quitter is the same guy who's supposed to be teaching young athletes how to deal with adversity. His message is "RUN AWAY!" Petrino didn't get hit by a bus, and he didn't get a better position. He got one he thinks he can handle. But trust me on this, in ANY business, not just football, if you get a reputation for leapfrogging and your resume is filled with a bunch of broken promises, it's gonna get harder every time to find work. Petrino is lucky Arkansas is so desperate.
  10. Exactly. Petrino would do nothing for the long-term success of this program, because as soon as he had a season like Todge just had, he'd leave to go coach high school in week 9 or something.
  11. I don't give a rat's crack about contracts and who can fire who and who has a responsiblity to whom. The fact of the matter is the guy's a crappy coach. If people don't like the situation in the NFL where you can get let go at any time, they're more than welcome to go work at Arby's instead of making millions of dollars. Petrino came in and did nothing but make a bad situation worse and show how ill-equipped for the job he was. Once it was painfully obvious to everyone (like week 3), he clammed up even further and let the problems in the team erode and spill over into the media. Once the meltdown was complete, he bolted, knowing he is incapable of actually fixing the situation, because he doesn't have the stones.
  12. I'm not sympathizing with an owner on this, I'm calling Petrino a whiny little **** who can't hack it and knows it. And it would be one thing if this were something he'd done ONCE, but he has a history of doing it, and it's funny to me anyone actually wants to defend him. Life is unfair. So what. Petrino is a punk and a quitter. I'd have much more respect for the guy if he actually tried to stay in Atlanta and get things righted, even if he ended up failing, because that takes guts. I wouldn't touch him with a 10-ft pole, because every year this guy loses credibility.
  13. Well, it just so happens I have a transcript of the telephone call: I know, but I don't like it here anymore. I want to live at home with you... (beat) Yeah, and dad. I want to go back to college. I-dad did what? (beat) Rented out my room? ...Well, why can't Mr. Echevarria and I share it?... Please, ma, I want to come home. (sobbing) Please let me come home. I don't want to stay here. Very telling indeed.
  14. Well, it wasn't just the fault of our kicking game, as our offense was pretty stellar at backing up once it got in the redzone.
  15. Yeah, basically it just looks like Petrino is a wuss and a quitter. Maybe someone should tell him "THIS IS THE NFL. GO COACH INTRAMURALS, BROTHER!" Yes, Atlanta has a lot of problems. So do a lot of losing NFL teams. So do a lot of teams in general. A coach who has no grip on a team with problems isn't a coach worth the paper his contract is printed on. I wish him nothing but failure. A MAN honors committments. If it came down to Vick, that news has been out for a while, and it would've been better if he quit back then. Now he just realizes he can't hack it as a coach in the NFL.
  16. what's the phrase? "pay commensurate with experience."
  17. Tebow or McFadden. Either of those two.
  18. I think this offense is bringing them in because it's shiny and new. Now, I think it's a better offense than DD's, certainly, but we've seen a number of obvious flaws in it this year (short yardage and red-zone issues when in the shotgun, etc.). AND I think when next year rolls around and the fan interest spike from a shiny new offense and coaching staff has worn off, ONLY wins will bring people in.
  19. And I'm one who believes the Belt has been improving every year, with a few notable exceptions...
  20. Woohoo, we have a sexy passing offense now. It's still terrible and inefficient. It's simply the passing version of DD's vaunted run all the time O, which set its own number of 1-dimensional records. The record I care about is W-L. How many INTs have we thrown this season? How many turnovers in total do we have? How many special teams miscues? Those are some stats for you to look at. Yep. Two honorable mention FRESHMAN All-Americans. Our young talent, at this point, appears much further ahead of our upperclassmen, which is part of the reason for the personnel changes and inconsistency and, most importantly, LOSSES. If people are as upset by our losses as they appear to be, then surely they can see it is at least in part due to us not having the guns, when that has been obvious in EVERY game this year. Everyone in the conference will have several players on the all-conference lists. We just lost to the 2nd worst team in the country (the worst is now us without a doubt). I'm one who believes this team is on the way up, but at this point I have to admit to myself that it is on blind faith and recruiting alone, because the coaching, talent, and execution (EVERYTHING, get it?), need to get WAY better if we want to compete.
  21. my point is that our team sucks on all fronts, and if you guys were consistent, you'd be calling for all the coaches' heads. i don't like that we're the worst team i've ever seen play, but if i call for Mendoza's head in his first season, i should be ready to call for everyone from Todge on down, because this team has been terrible all season. but our athletes, particularly on defense, are NOT up to snuff. sorry if that hurts people's feelings, but it's the sheer fact of the matter. with or without schemes we shouldn't be getting blown off the ball by FIU. with or without them, our DBs shouldn't be getting beat this badly. now, some of that can be attributed to attrition and change of coaching styles. a GOOD DEAL of it has been a coaching staff doing a terrible job. but the grim reality is that our D is about 1/3 of the problem with this football team right now. that's my point.
  22. And if we didn't get the ball on the 1 yard line to start the game, we'd have all of 13 points.
