  1. I wish Chico could have gone out on a better note, but I believe he will find what he is looking for elsewhere. As for those fans and Alums left here in the Mean Green Nation, time to write a new Book. Chapter One, Out of the Shadows. Our future is no longer about just about winning, it's about becoming more. We have the chance again to show the country that athletics matter in Denton Texas. The road from obscurity to relevance is uneven, rocky, and littered with failures, but many have done it in spite of what is said or written. Coach Chico learned the hard way that a resurrection of this magnitude takes more than time? The new head coach will inherit a Rubik's Cube, each side with a different challenge. I hope he believes he can do it here because other programs have done it, regardless of what people say or think? Rick Villarreal cannot miss the target again with this hire.. he simply cannot miss. GMG
  2. Why are we so sure Briles wont happen? He did put his own name in the hat? (According to Brett Vito) I think there is real interest from Briles, But we wont be the only school talking to the guy. Maybe a better job comes a long for him, but for now I am holding out hope. We need a coach that rings in some kids ears and I'm not sure Jinks gives us that? GMG!!!
  3. The last time I asked a Magic 8-ball a question it lied. I asked if Todd Dodge would leap North Texas into the limelight? The dumb thing said "yes". Four years later I asked if there was a dumbass in the room who still believes in Todd Dodge? The dumb thing said "yes". I was all by myself and I didn't believe in Todd Dodge, so I think it was just calling me a dumbass. GMG.
  4. MUTS - 38 LeanGreen - 10 Demarcus Smith will run for a score, Brent Stockstill throws 4TD's and more. (that sounded very Doctor Seuss-ish?) GMG.
  5. We also have to remember RV has been a tad under fire lately, so he is probably thinking the less he gives us to complain about the better. I have to admit the banter on the board is better with less information about who the real candidates are. When the day comes that we are down to the final three I would like the AD to get the word out. In the meantime, keep searching RV! Your job may depend on... uh?... well no, probably not. GMG!!!
  6. Need a younger, "guns-blazing" offensive minded coach. Footballs are being fired all over the field in high scoring offenses in high schools, in high scoring offenses in colleges, and thus will be in Denton Texas. No bus drivers, Buicks, retirees, or experiments please? (Unless you are considering Sofia Vergara, at which point I'll take the under) GMG!!!
  7. There are so many open wounds on this program now that a paper cut probably bleeds it to death. I am still hoping for Coach Briles, but not likely considering our current state of affairs. I think what bothers me most is knowing what a great guy RV is (and he really is), then seeing what a terrible AD he has become. Every coach we hire is clear about the challenges to coaching and recruiting for sports programs in Denton Texas. The biggest problem in hiring a new coach is not that we have an AD who has lost touch with his responsibilities, but thinks "stepping aside" versus "stepping in" can work with any head coach? Doing the Mean Green March or not, Alums being allowed into practice or not, recruiting deficiencies or not, Dan MacCarney would never have been a good hire here. However, Todd Dodge could have been a good hire here. Where was our AD in all of this coaching mess? An AD should have demanded more.."Glad to have you here Coach Dodge, but no other High School coaches please". Or what about.." We do a TRADITIONAL March for our fans three hours prior to game time, Coach Mac.. and let's open up the practice fields so fans can watch their favorite players and be excited about Mean Green Football again." There is simply no formula where RV can sit idly by and let things happen. Yes, hiring a new coach for any sport is a gamble but the AD must take the reigns. I believe that is RV's most glaring deficiency now. I hate to beat UNT90's dead horse, but I cant see a scenario where we get a Head Coach worth a nickel while we have an AD who doesn't want to step in and take charge. Coaches who know anything about North Texas football and our AD will not come here to do this job alone? I would like to think an offensive mind like Briles or Cumbie would jump at the chance to head coach, but how much do they really know about North Texas? I think maybe too much. Guess we will just have to wait and see.. again. GMG!!!
  8. Applewhite works for me, unless Briles somehow agrees to talk to us. I think Applewhite would be good for recruiting and could land a few players just based on his resume. Still sounds a bit odd to me.. we would have a Longhorn coaching for a fanbase that doesn't like the Longhorns? Knowing how Applewhites tenure ended there, makes me wonder how aggressive his would play calling might be when we play against UT in Austin? That could be very Jerry Springer-ish? I say what the hell.. bring him on if he will take the job. I'm in. GMG!!!
  9. Pinkel did a great job at Mizzou. Two top 5 teams and lots of his talent playing now in the NFL. I'm very sorry to hear about the Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Lost my Dad recently to Lymphoma. Best wishes to Coach Pinkel and his family. GMG!!!
  10. The only match ups I care about now are these: Sonny Cumbie vs Kendall Briles (Round 1) / Major Applewhite vs Meachum (Round 2) / Mario Crystobal vs Jeff Traylor (round 3) There are my picks. Winner gets a Green Polo, a nice salary, and an all-expense paid trip to beautiful Denton Texas! I'm still pulling for Briles, although I hear that is a real long-shot now. GMG!!!
  11. You guys remember the Ty Jackson from the 2000-ish team? LISTED at 5-7 and 170. Darrell Dickey told us the story at one of the pre-season banquets about the hit TJ took in the a game the prior season. The hit was vicious, so Darrell walks over to make sure TJ is okay. He hears Walter Priestly ask TJ where his helmet is? TJ points to the third row of the student section and walks to the bench. Darrell shook his head, glanced into the third row of the student section, then told Kevin Howard "I guess you get to take kicks for the rest of this one.. when we find it that helmet is probably cracked". I laugh hard every time I think of that story. Ahhh, the good old days. GMG!!
  12. Uh?.. okay. I guess we don't interview that guy? Is Paul Patrino still at Idaho? Damn.. GMG!!!
  13. Brett Vito should at least be creative.. When Tennessee has the ball... They will score. When North Texas has the ball.. They will not have it long. Predication: Tennessee wins in a blowout. Jason Witten in attendance quoted as saying "Lance Dunbar played for THOSE guys?" GMG!!!
  14. Some scoop? I have another one for Brett. This Basketball season wont go well. GMG!!!
  15. Riley was being recruited to play Wide Receiver at UT, not QB. ESPN graded him out as only a 79 at QB, and had some interesting comments about him on his page. http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/evaluation/_/id/47978/riley-dodge . Riley was a great athlete, and was a good signing for North Texas. I hoped he would play here as well as he did at Soutlake Carroll. The football Gods were not so kind, and his size in the pocket was an issue as most publications predicted. Todd Dodge is on record as saying he wanted Giovanni to stay, but most felt Riley would end up in the saddle. http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/college_sports/college_football/article/Ex-Heights-QB-Vizza-tossed-football-and-scored-817823.php . Regardless, neither Coach Mac or Coach Canales have recruited at the same level as either of their predecessors? That's how you get beat 66-7 by Portland State at home. Hopefully the next coach has connections that prevent such things from ever happening here again. There may be another Giovanni Vizza out there waiting to play QB at North Texas. It wont be an easy sell? Fingers crossed.. GMG!!!
  16. We played the OU cheerleaders in football at Norman once? We actually did well against OU in the parking lot! Then the Sooners beat the crap out of our football team in their stadium. What can I say? I guess football is harder on grass. GMG!
  17. Guys is tough as nails. Good to hear he is back at work! GMG!!!
  18. It's just another game for Demarcus to work out some kinks against some of the best athletes in D1 Football. Better we have Tennessee than Alabama this year? I wonder what the record is for the most points given up by a D1 team in a single season? As we have several new "Claims to Shame", I think we may have a shot at that one too. As this is the Vols Homecoming Game I think the score may be a little more lopsided than normal. The way I see it no loss now could be as bad as the Portland State loss at home? So bring on the Vols and keep your head up Demarcus! (Oh, and DMarc please repeat this to yourself when the game gets confusing. "no fumble.. no fumble..no fumble..no fumble") GMG!!!
  19. RV told me at the North Texas - Seton Hall Softball game that Chumley was only being looked at as a QB. I thought I read somewhere that Mac was looking at him as a TE? Regardless, I understand the opinions on Demarcus but I feel like we should not be so fast to raise the white flag and give up? We will see all of our QB's in the spring anyway, so why not give our best QB the chance to grow up now? I feel like we are at a point in this program where we need to be dedicated to something or someone. I'm no fortune teller, but Demarcus should be a very different QB next season after all the training and experience he is getting now. If another QB pulls ahead of him in practices, then Chico will play that guy. I would be okay with any QB except Mini-Mac. In the mean time, I'm backing the guy who has shown the most this year. He is not going to set off ESPN scoring alerts every two minutes against Tennessee, but every down he gets in full speed games makes the entire offense better. Nothing like hope with a slight hint of fear. Just my two cents. GMG!!!
  20. I know I will catch it for this post, but I cant see why some are so quick to give up on Demarcus Smith? He is getting the reps he needs now in these games. That is exactly what we wanted? It has been pointed out that he is a Junior and should be better? Quite the opposite is true, he is a first-year QB in this system, and the system has already changed again during the season. Give the kid some time to develop and then judge the product on the field. Yes, he is going to be off in his timing at times, but he will also make some good throws. Some say he does too much with his legs, but that is actually a good thing considering the sacks his predecessor was taking? Many of us have seen the positives in Demarcus, and we didn't have much in the way of positives before Coach Mac was ushered out? Give this kid some time to play at this level, and get tutored over the Spring and Summer by our new coaching staff. Yes, that will be a new system also, but Demarcus will have some real game experience under his belt. Mistakes are a part of learning, and he is truly learning each week. If a Five Star QB gets recruited in the off season and shows he is ready to play now, of course I am on board. Otherwise, get our QB ready to go for the 2016 season and stay the course. We knew it would not be easy or pleasant to watch at times. Nothing has changed? This kid has promise, and we have nothing to lose by grooming him for next year. I vowed to back Demarcus Smith if Chico left him in there to take his lumps, and I am going to do that. I see something in him that gives me hope. At this point in this horrific season, ANY hope works for me. Okay, fire away! GMG!!!
  21. The huddled masses in the stands yelling "We want Chico!".. and yes, I was one of them. GMG!!!
  22. I was not aware he was a realistic candidate, but he gets a YES vote. I think he is right in the ballpark for what we should be looking for. I am wondering why a very successful coordinator from the Big XII would consider coaching a team in C-USA? I hate to be that guy that questions a gift, so I wont. I thought we would be in the same boat with Briles, but I'm not sure he is even on the radar now? RV must be listening to the whispers in the air, or is starting to think like we do. Well, like some of us. You're off to a good start Rick V.. keep it up. GMG!!!
  23. Not that is matters now, but RV told Emmitt and I on the field just after the end of Chico's last game in 2010 that McCarney had already been hired? (I didn't even know who McCarney was?) Emmitt pulled up his stats right there on his cell phone and we both looked at RV and said WHAT? Rick said the decision was made above him but he understood why we were all yelling "We want Chico" in the stands. He also said Coach Canales did interview for the HC job but the decision was made to go with McCarney. At that time, the "Gates were locked" and we all wanted Chico for the job. We thought it was a no-brainier? Apparently not, so what's done is done and here we are.. again. If it is true that hindsight is 20-20, it must also be true that an ounce of prevention goes farther than a pound of cure. Please do your homework this time Rick V., there will be no one else to blame. GMG!!!
  24. This may take a few of us back some, but does anyone of the older era board guys see a little resemblance of UNT90's posts to GreenGrenade (RS)? Every era has to have a voice who posts things that get everyone thinking, and sometimes upset. As we realized years ago, GG was posting things more to be funny than upsetting, but he also would not stop at times. He posted some of the same things over and over in an attempt to get everyone's dander up?. Looking back, we likely needed that catalyst back then. Without a GG or UNT90 stoking the fire, we would be boring each other with stories about what could have been and the old Fry Street? I may not agree with many of UNT90's threads (actually almost none) but I support his place among us to be posting and re-posting his rhetoric here. I still think the banner and billboards are bad ideas but I am glad we have people who care enough to act on their enthusiasms, even if they post the same thread thirty times. Just a thought.. GMG!!!
  25. The Union looks amazing! I cant wait to take my daughter around later this year. She is a 9th grader right now with UCLA stuck on her mind. I have a couple of years to convert her. My son grew up at North Texas, so he has already planned on attending UNT as soon as he exits the Army. If I were a high school kid, the Union would certainly sway my decision! Well done North Texas! GMG!!!
