College players now can leave programs anytime. The pay isn't the issue, the lock-down of the player to the school is the biggest issue.
I know that my interest in College Football has degraded massively over the last few years. It started with the Transfer Portal and got worse with the NIL. I no longer watch or attend any games outside of NT. It's just not as fun anymore to me.

I am not 🙂 I am basically praising the fact that we hired Hodge (no brainer) to replace Mac as head coach, instead of going outside the program.
I just tend to believe that when you have a system that works, it is better to promote from within than to go outside your program to replace coaches. Boise St FB was very successful at doing this for a while.
If and when the time comes, I hope that we continue with that philosophy. This system works.- 11

The thing about Mac/Hodge teams… every year they have remarkable improvement as the season progresses. Game one team looks nothing like game 20.
they are wine.
100% this. They don't get the best talent. But, they make the most of that talent.
We are really fortunate right now to have Hodge and be able to continue with the same system.
It's time to groom the next Hodge within the program. That is how you achieve sustained success when your not a top program with tons of $$$- 5

Wow. JMU has lost 8 players to Indiana. That could be expected with Indiana taking their head coach. But, that has to hurt.

I haven't watched a single bowl game yet. Yes, they are glorified scrimmages. The Transfer portal is killing the bowls.

I would like to see SMU left out in the cold, However, even without FSU and Clemson, the ACC would easily be the top G? conference unless it completely implodes.
SMU's dreams of being a P? however will be dashed though.- 1

Maclin is thriving in this offense with a good QB. If he wants to play at the next level, his best option IMO is to stay at UNT and continue to put up big numbers next year.

If Caponi wants to find players to fit his system, he needs to hit the transfer portal hard this offseason. He doesn't have the time to wait on HS recruits to improve his defense. You can't have the worst defense in the FBS and expect to keep your job more than 2 seasons (or 1 season for many programs).
A couple quotes from Syracuse Head Coach Dino Babers when they switched to the 3-3-5 in 2020."In theory, the 3-3-5 is fast, malleable and conducive to an undersized defensive line. If you’re at a place where you have the ability to get a lot of good defensive linemen all the time, you don’t have to go to it,”
The 3-3-5 has worked pretty well for Syracuse since then. As large defensive linemen are at a premium, it would seem to make sense for a school like North Texas to try and switch to a 3-3-5 (at least on paper).- 3

I just saw that the line has moved to UNT -20.5, started at -17. Am I missing big news of Rogers being out with an injury? Or is Vegas just fading us that hard?
I saw that also. My guess is that Preston Stone may have cleared his concussion protocol and will play.

SMU -16.5 ?
I can see SMU going up by 3 or 4 TD's and our offense making some catchup in garbage time.
Not a bet that I would touch.- 2

My God this defense

Losing the way the guys have the last 2 weeks is very frustrating. However, it beats the hell out of being blown out twice like most people were expecting prior to the Tulane game. At least it gives some hope that some things are on the right track (at least offensively).
Chandler Rodgers was amazing again today. What a difference he has made.- 5

The important thing for me is to see improvement. Overall, the team has seemed to improve in every game (especially the defense, which had nowhere to go but up).
The next 3 games are going to be tough. If we can remain competitive and maybe even win 1 of them, I would feel pretty good about the future of this program with this coaching staff.- 8

I have been thinking all along that Rodgers was a Senior. I just found out he is only a Junior.
How nice would it be going into 2024 knowing we have the QB position solidified (assuming the transfer portal does not strike again). Harris and his 7 year run at UTSA have been the main reason for their recent success.- 8

I know that Tulane has a really good defense. But, I thought we would be able to move the ball better than we have.

We needed a fast start on offense to keep up with them. It looks like a looooong day right now.

So, will 41 points by the offense win this game ? Temple gets the ball and if they score, we have a real ball game.
Defense must get a couple stops. Turnovers by either side will be huge in this one. -
First and goal from the Temple 6 and they throw it 3 times ? How do you not run it with our running game ?
I feel like our offense is going to have to score every time they touch the ball 😞- 1

Tackling is a theory at this point
Fortunately, Temple is also bad at it. We are watching 2 terrible defenses right now. Our guys may need to score 50+ to win.

If we only had an average defense....

What ? I see us get a TD and then ran to the bathroom happy.
I come back just in time to see us turnover the ball on downs at the 1.I am guessing a penalty eliminated the TD ? ugghh

Navy 45
North Texas 31
Navy averages 7 yds per carry, rushes 52 times for 365 yards and eats up the clock keeping our offense off the field. -

It is unless your team gets relegated and the loss of income forces selling off the stars and then you suck for real and go down another level. 24 Premier league teams relegated ended up falling two steps, seven of those going down three steps, and one going down four steps. Very common for relegated teams to end up going into administration (bankruptcy court) to reorganize their finances. Some smaller clubs have been folded, one relocated. Portsmouth FC barely escaped being folded.
Hmm. That's really interesting.

Maybe players are lazy and don't want to play defense ? Probably not true. But, just a thought 🤔
