  1. To be open and honest: I made a slight edit to the 3rd option, removing the clause: "I don't care about the other candidates" as this probably does not reflect this school of thought.

So to differentiate between option 2 & option 3:

    2) you're more concerned with what other coaches we could possibly hire.

    3) you're more concerned with Chico proving he can win games.

    I think options 1 & 4 speak for themselves.

  2. Of course...this poll is null and void as of tomorrow evening.

I don't think it changes much after tomorrows game. However, some people might change their minds after tomorrows game, and that's fine, you can always change your answer.

I think the only edit I would have to make is removing the "MT" from the "...If he can beat MT & LAMo..." option.

  3. **WARNING** This poll is public, so people will be able to see which option you picked.

Don't wuss-out now folks! Put your name on your opinion.

I would expect everyone who has contributed to the pages and pages of threads to put their name on one of the 4 most cited options. If you haven't been participating in the threads and are just waiting to see, then vote only if you want to...

Of course, if there's another option that I'm just not thinking of right now, feel free to post.

I think this will give everyone (maybe even RV  ) a clear understanding of where GoMeanGreen.com, as a whole, stands on Chico as of today (11/12). I also hope it clears up a little confusion of "You're either Pro-Canales or Anti-Canales", as I imagine the middle two choices will dominate this poll.

  4. The thing I keep shaking my head at every time I see it on this board is "you people" think/thought Todd Dodge a "name" coach. How many college football fans outside of the State of Texas even know who he is now much less in 2006?

In the world of NCAA Football Todd Dodge never was, and never shall be a "name" coach.

Sir, I qualified that statement with "in Texas". If you were here, yes, you would call Todd Dodge a "name" coach. Is he a name coach on a national scale? Only if you are REALLY into High School football. Otherwise, not even close.

As far as "never shall be", I'm not convinced of that. You may be right though. But I think a few years bouncing around as a QB coach > Passing Game Coord > Offensive Coord of some good universities, he may have another shot.

As a Missouri Tigers fan, you should be very aware of Mr. Dodge.

  5. So you quit on UNT but now you're back on the bandwagon?

I'm sorry, but I must have missed the pre-requisites that govern the rules of a public messageboard such as this. Could you possibly link me to those rules so that I might see if I qualify to be here?

Sir, it's one thing to come on here and hawk one specific coaching candidate on us... It is another malfeasance to attack an alum as being a "bandwagon" jumper!! Please don't do that again.

  6. I became a season ticket holder again in 2006 when Todd Dodge became the head football coach.

I have already made arrangements to purchase four (4) club seats in the new stadium.

Sorry to interject in this because my point is way off topic, but I wonder how many of you there are?

Here ladies & gentlemen is a fantastic example of a "name" coach (we can all agree that in the state of Texas, despite his qualifications, that Todd Dodge was a "name" coach) can have a positive effect on the fanbase even after he is gone.

I'm not saying that Dodge was the ONLY reason you got tickets Tyler, but surely something excited you enough to get tickets again... Then, you decided to buy club seats (despite Dodge's record) even though Dodge is gone.

It's fans like you that this hire should bring back. Is coach Canales the guy for this? I don't know, but I'm interested in what you have to say if you could step back in time and transpose Chico for Dodge.

  7. Shoot me know or shoot me later, but I am beginning to like the idea of keeping Coach Canales around as the new HC more and more every day. Got to meet him personally and speak briefly with him last evening at the BB game...yes, he was at the BB game...like I said, I am beginning to like the idea more and more, and as most know, I was not onboard with this idea at first.

We'll see how it ends, but for now, I'm good with Coach Canales.

    Let the harping begin...3...2...1......

KRAM, do you like Scrappy for head coach? He goes around and shakes everyone's hand is at every athletics event. :P

All I know is, Scrappy would be the most demonstrative coach to ever roam a college football sideline. Can someone start a Scrappy for Head Coach campaign? Get Chuck Neinas on the phone!

  8. ...he would quit to become Iowa's AD.

I know people love Hayden Fry, and I can understand why, because he is one of the high points of North Texas football.

But why do we obssess over him? The world of college football is totally different than it was then. Yes some of his ideas, especially engaging the community are a good idea, especially from the role of AD, which is what he also was. The football coach more than anything needs to recruit, teach, adjust, win.

Alexander the Great's army steamrolled most of the world, but if the US Army tried to copy him now, we would find horse calvary and the sarissa spear a little lacking. College football isn't the same, Denton isn't the same, hell, people aren't the same anymore. A new coach should be looking forward, not backwards.

OH! NOW YOU'VE GONE AND DONE IT YOUNG GUN!!!1!!

  9. Cheap Golf Clubs for You

Ladies, you have been asked to start playing cheap golf clubs with your spouse. The good news is that this could be his quiet way to tell you that he wants to spend more time with you. In addition, with men being men, they would like to teach you themselves how to play the game so they feel like they are important to you. This is a slippery slope as your spouse is probably not qualified to give you proper golf instruction or information. ishiner

    .

This is wrong on so many levels.

  10. We would all love to have the sausage splash that comes from Earl Campbell, but we have to be realistic about our resources. They've been throwing sausage parties in Syracuse for three generations, so even if they're not from Texas, not very many can beat their meat. Besides, I hear they're very enthusiastic about going out into the Denton community and introducing people to their weiners.

Look, I don't know about you, but I don't want a sausage company catering the UNT games that has a pending lawsuit because it was accused of choking and slapping one of it's sausages.

Can't we get a more upstanding sausage?

  11. Hey Emmitt01, it was nice meeting you Saturday. Hope to see you around more. You present alot of great points in your post.

There are a couple myths floating around about coach Canales. The biggest one is this one "He's beaten WKU and had a close loss...just like Dodge." WRONG!!! Dodge beat WKU, true enough. And the games were always close and always in doubt. A fortuitous fumble here, an INT there...that's what it took for him to beat WKU. Canales coached our team (our greatly depleted team) to a beating of WKU. You can argue that it wasn't a blowout until late, but it was never in question. No back and forth lead changes, no nail-biter fourth downs, no doubt.

I agree with this. The WKU win was definitely more convincing than the others. I'm glad it turned out that way. It was certainly a boost to the team.

And his close win this season? Yeah, only against the reigning champion who had better athletes virtually across the board. Dodge kept us close to equal or inferior competition.

This was against a team that had lost to LAMo the week before. This is certainly not the Troy team of recent years. I only predicted a 10pt loss to them. The team played better than I thought!

Canales had a stadium (not full) of fans seriously believing that it we got the ball back (which we did) that we could win on the last drive of the game. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who can't see that he had a team which was otherwise left for dead playing with fire and passion is either blind, wasn't there (hi Plummy), or has an agenda.

I felt that way during the Rice game, the LALa game, and even the ARSt game (with Chase Baine at QB!) Didn't you?

You don't have to put him at the top of your coach wish list. But please don't try to write off his accomplishments as equal to his predecessor.

I agree with this too. He's certainly not Dodge. The players appear to be responding to him better than Dodge. They've completely bought into this 'Lock the Gate' theme. I don't think too many people are saying that Dodge and Canales are the same guy. Maybe I'm just not reading those posts because those people are on my ignored list... I dunno.

As to the "splash hire" movement. That might just be a great idea. Let's say we bring in a Mike Leach (or a Fran, etc). Thousands would show up to see him coach. Our stadium would be filled with the ticket buying masses. T-shirt alumni would come out of the woodwork. We'd probably get to be on national TV a time or two. And yes, he'd probably win. Then, as soon as the next big offer came along, he'd be gone.

I would certainly expect coach Canales to do this too. I think you're fooling yourself if you believe coach Canales only wants to be in Denton for the rest of his life. Who knows though? Maybe I'm wrong. I'm not willing to bet on that though.

And, whoops, the fans who came to see the circus would realize the circus is no longer in Denton and they'd be gone too. Why? Do you think he'd feel the need to go to Denton Chamber of Commerce meetings, high school pep rallies, Alumni meet and greets and the like? I sure don't. Why should he? His name alone sells tickets. And do you think he'd insure that all of our newfound fans form a connection to North Texas and who we are...or do you think those people would form a connection with the hoopla surrounding Mike Leach?

I think the people we REALLY need to get on board are the other 90,000+ alumni that are here in the DFW who are currently apathetic towards their university. Once UNT starts winning, regardless of the coach, hopefully those people will start coming out and opening their wallets. When they do, I think they would stick around after we replace this name coach with another coach after he departs.

The other people who come around based on the coach themselves will be minimal (people who like pirates and stuff). If they leave, it's OK because our targeted fans stayed.

How would that differ from winning with an infectious, driven, coach who's trying to make his name at North Texas and might just want to make North Texas his home? When the wins came with a guy like Canales (again, it doesn't have to be Canales) don't you think that the momentum of the ship would be the shining light and not the captain himself? We talk about wanting to be like Boise. Folks that's exactly how they did it.

I really do think Boise is a great template for us to try and follow, however, I fear that Boise caught lightning in a bottle. Boise lost coaches to big schools when the opportunity arose. That's what is so impressive. They have assistant after assistant that can pick up and continue with the program. Looking at guys like Leach,Fran,Leavitt,etc..., they have the name to attract the type of assistants that could accomplish this type of success for us. I don't know if Canales has these types of assistants at his disposal.

And let me address one more thing about this splash hire idea. The more I read this board and talk to our fans the more I hear "it would make people take us seriously as a program" and "it would make the local and national media take notice." Kinda reeks of insecurity to me. Sure, if you're a nerdy high-schooler and your daddy buys you a Bentley people will "take notice" and women will probably "take seriously" the prospect of dating you. I don't want people to take my school seriously because we do the "sexy" thing. I want them to say "Wow, North Texas really committed to a culture of winning and not taking a back seat to anyone. They win with determination and preparation and that can't be taken away." If that's with a "sexy" name so be it but let's not fall so much in lust with the idea of having our name on the front of the sports page.

I agree with your underlying principal here that UNT should be committed to a culture of winning and we can do this without a sexy hire. BUT, I think the sexy hire can get us there quicker. Take your example: girls will not consider dating the poor kid at the end of the class line, but if he somehow gets a Bentley, then they will start taking notice, and eventually may get to know that he's a great guy.

At the end of the day, I would just like to see our options. One of those options includes seeing what Canales can do in more than 2-3 games. If he proves himself to be a good enough coach, then please lump him in with the other candidates and see how he stacks up. He certainly has a leg up on the competition because he's been here for a year. If he stacks up better than the other guys, then by all means, sign him! If he starts recruiting great players and winning, he'll get noticed by bigger schools. If he leaves, fine. We will be in a position to get another great coach to fill in. IF he were to win AND stay, then I would be elated... I just don't expect it.

  12. I've been off the board for a while because, you know... I'm a quitter.

Let me lay out a scenario.

10 years from now the ship has been righted. We hire a coach, who in five years has us dominating the sunbelt. He leaves for greener pastures and his successor gets us to a BCS bowl in the next five years. This coach is heading to take over a BCS program.

Meanwhile, Todd Dodge has risen through the collegiate ranks to be the OC of KState in a National title game. Riley has proven to be quite the effective position coach and it appears wherever Todd Dodge goes as the next head coach, Riley will be his OC.

Assuming Villareal is still here, and about to have the stadium named after him, does he take another chance on the two Dodge's?

    It's fun to muse.

I'm not too sure that this scenario does not present itself, but I would say no. And it probably won't be 10 years from now either. Maybe more like 15-20. Who knows what Riley is doing. He may go into the business world or something.

  13. UNT Alum water cooler talk:

cowoker: Hey did you see my alma mater was ranked #10 in the Nation by US News?

me: yeah, well my alma mater has one of the best music schools in the nation! so suck it! Well I think it does...... because it is really hard to find rankings...... but that is what people have told me for years. Ahhhh screw it.... best Music School in the World! We're number 1, we're number 1! Wooooo hooooooo!

    Sound familiar to anyone?

You are correct. Alot of music programs have to pound their own chests in order to get noticed since rankings for music schools are so sparse.

But, as I said in my post:

"...America's Best Graduate Schools has been published annually by U. S. News & World Report since 1987. They began ranking graduate jazz programs in 1994 and the UNT Jazz Studies program was ranked number one in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997. After 1997, the publication stopped ranking graduate programs in music..."

This is from the jazz.unt.edu website. No University has a better Jazz studies program. The rest is just conjecture since for instance, a music program could have a fantastic voice department, but a mediocre composition department.

I'm very proud of our Music school and felt threatened by Troy band members so I retaliated violently like a trapped chimpanzee would. Does that make me a bad person? :(
