  1. I will say that McCarney would be more likely to have an uptempo offense rather than Fran's option attack.

You kidding? We've had great RB's ever since I've been a fan of UNT football (J'Quay in '00). We've also got a pretty good option QB right now in Riley. I think an option would be a pretty good attack for us.

McCarney is a defensive guy. Who knows what kind of offense he would install? I guess whichever one his O-coordinator brings with him...

  2. ...I just don't think we can get away with a minute distribution like we had last night...White 35, Odufuwa 34, TT 33, Hogans 31, DoMo 27, Shorter 21, Holmen 9, Edwards 6, Knox 4.

Not if we want to finish strong down the stretch and have a shot of running through the SBC Tourney. The guys will be too tired.

  3. Not the kind of dangerous I'm looking for. I'm looking for the Leavitt, Leach, Fran type of dangerous. Coaches with winning records that had stupid off the field issues that were way overblown.

That is why, if this is it, it is such a safe hire. Lots of candidates out there with a bigger upside, but would have been controversial.

I don't have a good feeling about this hire. Hope I'm wrong.

    What's more controversial?

    Smacking a player?

    Pay for insider information newsletter?

    Domestic abuse?

I mean, McCarney is pretty controversial!

  4. One thing you can't forget, Neinas didn't have a final say in who these universities ended up hiring. I'm sure he gives his recommendation, but the University decides who they want based on how they cooperatively narrow the list. McCarney could very well be a RV/Rawlins choice after Neinas points to Fran, Leavitt, etc.

SleepingGiantsFan has said repeatedly that the SDSU AD signed Chuck Long despite Neinas' recommendation of Jimbo Fisher. So this scenario would not surprise me. Hopefully RV is wise enough to listen to Neinas' recommendation and combine that with what our University needs to come up with the right decision.

  5. Well, Kragthorpe did great at Tulsa, stunk at Louisville, but who knows what was up there? And McCarney had some success, but took a long time to get there; didn't he have an overall losing record?

I think Kragthorpe is a mystery because I'm not sure who he REALLY is. Is he the guy that took Tulsa out of the duldrums and into the upper-crust of CUSA? Or, is he the coach who lead a fantastic Louisville team to a tailspin?

McCarney had some great years at IASt and some terrible years. I'm just not sure if he's the right guy either.

    Hopefully there are more options...

I'm beginning to lose hope in my Dennis/Brad Franchione dreams because I do not hear his name being leaked, rather some on here have said that he HAS NOT been contacted.

  6. It's funny that you use that example...when I was initially writing my rebuttal I used the same analogy...though my statement was that St. Mary's LOVES what Gonzaga is and what they have done. Loves it. It has made that program significantly better and improved the appeal of the entire conference.

Add to that, I don't think Guerrero puts WKU way over the top...he's a good player, but not a program changer.

Great minds think alike... if not oppositely sometimes. B)

You might be right. Unless he changes his mind, I guess we'll never know.

  7. Sorry...I just don't think you can look at things like this. You're essentially setting a cap on where this conference...and by proxy, UNT can go. The mentality needs to be if WKU, or someone else, ups the talent level UNT needs to do the same.

I agree with this. Look at what FIU is building. Great!

I would love for Guerrero to change his committment to ARSt to replace Reed or LAL to replace Gradnigo. Really, I think it would be great for him to suit up on ANY SBC squad... just not WKY.

Maybe it's fear? But the last thing we need is to be the St. Mary's to WKY's Gonzaga.

To be clear, I don't want any team in the Belt to get worse or stay the same so that UNT can dominate a weak conference.

Right now, I think UNT is in a great position to grab this conference by the sack and run it for a very long time. WKY will always be good and will get better with guys like Peters and Dickerson continuing to come in. They will always challenge for the Eastern division and the conf championship. I just don't want a game-changer to put them over the top and prevent UNT from building the dynasty that we have started.

  8. No. No, it's not.

I understand that we want our Belt foes to be very good so it elevates the rest of the conference (NT included), but WKY is going to be very good with or without Guerrero.

Now, if he were to sign with them and he is as-advertised, then UNT (as well as the rest of the belt) is in trouble of losing any kind of grip we could muster. WKY has a rich basketball history and that probably contributed to Guerrero's committment, but I will root against them starting up a dynasty with Guerrero as a cornerstone.

I agree that losing Reed and Gradnigo hurt the conference.

  9. End of Week HS games

South Grand Prairie beats Arlington Bowie 58 to 51 with Trey Norris with 7 points.

Arlington Grace Prep 58 Garland Lakeview Centennial 51 with Chris Jones held to 12 points

Kimbell 91 Lancaster 75 with Jordan Williams hitting 26 points.

Eastland, Forrest Robinson's team did not play

Casper CC played but no scores or stats available yet.

    EXCELLENT! Thanks GrandGreen!

  10. OK...but seriously, Go Tech.

They were down a few players who I hope will be back for the rest of their season...and I really hope they don't wet the bed against this tough OOC schedule. We need their RPI to help buoy ours the rest of the way.

A good Tech the rest of the season is great for us.

Exactly. As long as Crockett keeps developing and Singletary starts to play like he is able, they'll start winning games in bunches. I'll be a pseudo-fan of theirs for the remainder of the season.

  11. Last night games:

Chris Jones had 18 in a Garland Centennial 66 to 54 victory over the Colony.

Forrest Robinson had 29 as Eastland won over Early 59-33.

Trey Norris led S. Grand Prairie with 17 in a win over Southlake Carrol 61-47.

Brandon Walton is averaging 16.6 for 2-3 Casper CC.

    Great!

Hey GrandGreen, I promise to give you +1's for every report if you continue to do this... but tweak it a little.

Would love to see some auxilary stats, especially assists for Jones & Norris and rebounds & blocks for Robinson. Maybe just a whole line of stats for each player if you can find them.

This could be your answer to KING's pilots license.

    Whaddya say?

  12. Channelsurfing doesn't have any NCAA basketball games up on schedule yet. Hopefully we get USA vs. USM.

Good news on MTSU and UAB is that it's on ESPN3. Bad news is that it's another production like the football game we suffered through last weekend. Don't expect to see the ball or either basket, take Dramamine, and watch at your own risk.

So you mean we should expect to see Tristan put up a 3 (or maybe it's not Tristan we won't really be able to tell), only to have the producer cut to Kermit Davis blowing spit bubbles?

  13. I can't believe we just upset a Big 12 team in front of one of the 10 biggest crowds our stadium has ever seen and there are still jackholes over here arguing about the coaching search.

News flash: Hire whoever works cheapest. Plow the rest of the money into retaining Johnny Jones. If Canales will work for canned food and loose change he finds in the furniture, f*** it. Keep him. If not, pick up a homeless guy and put his ass on the sidelines next year.

You people missed a great night.

If it meant we could wrap up Johnny long term (meaning money-whipping him to stay here even if LSU comes calling), I'd be cool with hiring Randy from the Target loading dock as HFC. He wants $10/hr but I think Rick could get him down to $9.50

  14. First up, nice job of beating Texas Tech. That was a sweet win.

I went to the game and it is clear that this was no fluke. UNT has stepped it up in basketball. You can -- and should -- expect to post more wins like this at least from time to time. You have recruited some pretty good players and they just flat outhustled TT last night.

The super pit is a pretty cool place to watch a game. The band was rocking and the students were really into the action. The place looks good when it is rowdy and even half full.

I also like how the concourses just inside the entrance are pretty wide and easy to get around.

The tx tech fans just kind of sat there in horror and disbelief while UNT kept taking it to them and finally slammed the door shut in their faces. It's funny how so many tx tech people pride themselves on having such really intense, really kick ass fans. But when you throw a little adversity their way and they lose interest faster than you can blink an eye.

On the negative side of things...... I arrived in Denton kind of late. The parking situation was really, really bad. We had to park out by the football stadium and hike forever to get to the basketball arena.

Also, once we got inside the person selling tickets did not have any more of the $10 seats available. She made us walk around the building to the next section to buy tickets from someone else. She should have made "someone else" bring some extra $10 tickets to her.

The concession lines were too long. Way too long. Really unbelievable. I do not know if this is a staffing issue or what it might be, but we ended up buying just a pretzel since that was the shortest line we could find. If the regular concession area were shorter then we probably would have spent about 15 bucks. Some other people probably said screw it also.

If you want to move things up to the next level then you need to continue scheduling higher profile opponents from bigger conferences, and get a parking garage like SMU has, and improve a couple of basic things like ticketing and concessions. Just minor details, really. These are things which could help improve the overall fan experience.

Oh yeah, I also think it would also help for you to advertise your bigger games like this on the radio. The attendance was pretty good for a weeknight but when you are playing an opponent from a major conference like the Big 12 then you have a chance to pick up some extra local observers who do not normally follow UNT as much.

Again, great job on the win, and congratulations.

    TC

Thanks for the kind words and constructive criticism True Colors... however, I cant help but notice your thread title: "...from a Baylor Bear" and your avatar of: "Loves the Aggies! Go ATM!!" What's that all about?

  15. Jarion Henry was there last night and talked about the crowd size, participation, and rushing the court the rest of the night. Great win and great celebration. Reminds me of when we beat Middle Tennesse and brought down the goal posts! Love this

Was Jarion with Mr. Williams? Was he there with his dad? I hope he enjoyed the show!

We've got room for you in this class Jarion. Get on board with Mr. Williams and sign your LOI.
