  1. It's clearly because it's a six-man high school game... no green jerseys for the home team and nobody on the actual sidelines...

The visiting team must be getting pounded because everyone appears to be leaving the game early while the home side looks full!

  2. Here are a couple of facts on UNCC(as my feable memory serves me). They first started with no nickname or school fight song. The school is located on I-49, which is why they are called the Forty-niners. Their secondary nickname is Mean Green...seems that there was a good NT influence on their faculty. In fact, in the beginning they had the same fight song as us..not sure if they still do.

I also heard that their band are referred to as the "Green Brigadiers" and that they play in an antiquated stadium named Fowts Field. They recently had a new Chancellor appointed to their school and he was attempting to move the campus resources a few miles east to UNC Asheville... what a scumbag!

  3. Agreed. Graylin Hawkins was the latest example of this. We signed him to land Hall the QB and then Hall bailed on us. Now Hawkins has quit and we are again without another scholarship player. There are unique situations that we should consider doing this but by and large I hope we discontinue the practice of this.

This is quite the interesting (and accurate) spin on AAUNT's comment Harry.

I think he was referring to scheduling 2 for 1 games with other schools so they can come to Denton and play in front of all of Denton's talent (let alone the rest of DFW's talent). That opportunity alone should be enough for schools like OKSt/Missou/Ark/etc... to come play in Denton in a home/home series.

But your observation is also correct.

  4. Fans don't decide who goes where. If ESPN is willing to offer the WAC $1 million for broadcast rights with their new setup, but is willing to give the Sun Belt a $15 million deal for going to 12 teams, all of the sudden the SBC has a lot bigger carrot for those eastern WAC teams.

That's not to mention the bowls backing out of WAC affiliation, the fact that they will not be an FBS conference in 2015 unless they find another football member, and the disjointed nature of the league that includes all previous Sun Belt or Southland schools outside of SJSU.

Is this being discussed somewhere, or is this a hypothetical? I've completely missed this if it is indeed a real possibility.

  5. Thanks so much! I'll have to run through those threads as well.

I'm Blinn College alumni. Majored in Computer Information Technology. As it turrns out, what was industry standard for rubber-meet-the-road IT, is no longer. So, I thought to sharpen my skills, gain a marketing chip and for greater knowledge and personal enrichment...bachelor time.

You could not have chosen a better school sir, and I kinda like the screen name! Welcome aboard & Go Mean Green!

  6. Maybe I'm just too naive or trusting but I don't see the need for the ban. Do we assume that Rivals is going to favor one school over another as the NCAA does? What is to keep a school from receiving information from an alum who does subscribe? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Don't we always complain about how players will be ranked 3*, or whatever, then commit/sign with UNT and get dropped? There has to be something to that right? I think, like many of you, that this is the least of our problems in college athletics.

  7. You have said Brandon McCoy is a natural defensive tackle. A glance at the roster shows a weight of 265, which in college means he probably goes for 250. Is the current roster weight wrong? Has Brandon beefed up over the winter? If so, what is his current weight? If not, there are some of us that are concerned that this is yet another defensive end being played out of position by a defensive line coach that has showed a propensity to do this in the past. How would you address those concerns?

Tough question, but GMG.com's journalistic integrity depends on y'all asking this question, Harry & Evan.

  8. I will still support the hitting in practices regardless of injury. We've missed nastiness/toughness over the past few years. I long for the days when offenses didn't want to throw over the middle on us cause our safeties were notorious head hunters. We were nasty in the trenches on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Personally, I'm glad that Coach Mac has identified this area as a critical component to the teams future success.

I agree with this, with one exception. I might suggest a yellow/red jersey for Lance Dunbar... that's about it. Anyone else can hit/be hit in practice.

  9. I could tell 4 clear cut winners...John Shorter over Brelan Chancellor, Kyle White over John Noble, Aaron Fortenberry over Aaron Bellezin and Jamize Olawale absolutely blew up whoever he was matched up with.

I saw that too, but I thought they were working him at wideout now? Seems like he would be a very nice blocker at TE, where he played last year. I guess there's some blocking going on outside as well... I feel bad for whatever 5'9"/185lb CB he's up against on a running play.

  10. Sorry, man...I think this is such failed logic.

The idea that the addition of more guns into a random, hostile situation somehow keeps down the chances of casualties is, well if any of the Brain Trust had said it, stupid...but I've more respect for you, so I'll just say illogical.

The image I have is of a crowded, auditorium like classroom...take the Lyceum...gunman walks in...200 people start scrambling over one another, knocking each other down for the exit with a complete self-survival/disregard for other's instinct. Now you want to add what...2,3,5 people with concealed weapons attempting to return fire at what I'll assume(hope) is their first human target, a circumstance no one know's exactly how they'll react in when first presented...save perhaps for the gunman who knew premeditatedly he'd be popping off some rounds at people and has already displayed his disregard for human life, and add trying to return fire amongst the pandemonium of fleeing people...and this somehow will create a safer situation?

To preface, I do not have a CHL.

I have friends that do, and the process is very rigorous. These same guys are avid hunters and are constantly at the range. If someone walked into the Lyceum and started spraying, guys like my friends could have him down with 1 shot within a few seconds. I believe there are many folks in Texas like this...

...Unfortunately, and this is the cause for aprehension, there are folks who just tote around a sidearm or maybe have a CHL but don't shoot often, who in the same case, would absolutely cause more harm than good. And you're right, there are probably more of these guys than the helpful ones.

I can't say I'm definitively pro or against this legislation just because I know if I could have one of my friends with me when something like this went down, I would be safer, but I don't have an entourage so there would certainly be opportunity for this to happen when they're not around.

  11. Don't you think we should let the guy coach at least 1 SBC game, or even OOC game, before we annoint him the best in the belt? Yes, he has been the head guy at a big 6 school, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he will automatically suceed at UNT. One would think that would be the case, but we just don't know.

To ramk him above Cristobal or Blakeney is laughable at this point in time. You didn't say the coach with the most impressive resume, you said the best coach in the belt.

    Way, way too soon.

OK, with this criteria (SBC tenure) would this be your list? If no, how would you rank them?

    Howard Schnellenberger - since 2001

Larry Blakeney - transitioned to SBC play in 2004.

    Rick Stockstill - since 2006

    Mario Cristobal - since 2007

Willie Taggart - slight nod over Berry since he was the OC at WKU while they were transitioning to SBC.

Todd Berry - 1 year in SBC

Hugh Freeze - 0 games as HC, but he was an OC in the SBC last year!

Dan McCarney - 0 games in the SBC

Mark Hudspeth - 0 games in the SBC

Joey Jones - 0 games in the SBC, let alone D1 ball.

You are right, the question is "Best In The Belt". And, you're right, we don't have any tangible results of his time at UNT.

  12. The conference has a few new faces this year, and apparently CFN likes our coach the best according to this thread.

I happen to agree with them, but I'd love to stack them from top to bottom and, of course, I'd love to see what you guys think, so here goes:

    1. Dan McCarney - Serious skins on the wall and a shiny NC ring to show for it. No way this guy will get "out-coached" in the SBC.

    2. Mario Cristobal - Probably the best up & coming coach in the league. He wont be at FIU for very much longer.

    3. Rick Stockstill - Has his team at the top of the SBC every year. He consistently brings in good recruiting classes as well.

    4. Larry Blakeney - He built Troy at the D1a level from a good foundation at D1aa level. Even though the way he gets his talent is shady, there's no denying he's one of the best in the league. Look at his team's record.

    5. Howard Schnellenberger - Cant argue with this guy's credentials, but it does appear that the game is passing him by, or he is starting to not really care anymore.

    6. Todd Berry - He's bounced around more than a pinball, but he does have some good head coaching experience.

    7. Willie Taggart - Another up & coming coach starting at the bottom of the league. He should have WKU competing in short order.

    8. Mark Hudspeth - He has some experience, but not alot at a high level

    9. Hugh Freeze - This guy is raw.

    10. Joey Jones - This guy is rawer, but there are no expectations on South Bama... yet.
