  1. What is the best scenario you see happening for the MG Football team? I have trouble seeing them doing much better than last year? What do you all think?

    GO MEAN GREEN!

The best scenario is for UNT to go 13-0 with a BCS bowl win.

I'm fairly certain they will do better than last year. 6-6.

  2. No defensive pre-season All Sun Belt for UNT. How far we have fallen on the defensive side of the ball.

But.......... I have confidence that McCarney will correct this problem in short order.

Don't worry deep. The UNT pipeline of all-conference linebackers is not over this year. Zach Orr will be on the post-season all-conference list. Take it to the bank. And, isn't that the list we really care about? :thumbsu:

  3. The new arena will be a boost for recruiting for sure. If you haven't noticed, we're expecting a recruiting boost in football with our new facility as well.

I think UTA's new arena will have more of an impact than joining the WAC as far as recruiting goes.

As for an advantage over UNT, I don't see that happening simply because of the recent success NT has enjoyed. I like the recent rivalry with UTA and hope to continue playing them.

  4. Anyone besides me glad that this Darius Carey issue came up and was promptly snuffed out during the off-season and not in the middle of football season? Such a diversion could have had a negative effect on our team during our "run to the Sun Belt" title.

probably the only positive of the whole thing.

  5. The Bleacher Report is what you want to make out of it.

If the same article had UNT ranked at 120, then everyone would be ripping it to shreds.

They are the opinions of random people, just like this board.

Now, the exception I take is when people post a bleacher report article as some sort of proof for an argument, or cite a bleacher report article alongside say an ESPN or DRC/DMN/FWST article. It just doesn't carry that much weight.

  6. You think that cheers/traditions have nothing to do with the Athletic Department and that they have no interest in them? Where's the logic there?1.

Well, the association of former students at A&M didn't create the cult-like traditions, but they certainly are the keepers of the flame...regardless of the number of flames there are that get created....which are, at this point, countless.2.

So you think that students are the ones in charge of traditions? Well, since apathy is our most consistent tradition, they're doing a great job.3.

    1. I never said the AD has no interest in them, they're probably dying to get some traditions going around here just like you and I are. They just wont be starting them because that's not something they're supposed to be doing.

    2. I think this proves my point. While students, they generated a bunch of weird traditions, and as they grow older, they preserve them. We need our current students to do the same thing!

    3. You know what? Sadly, you're very right.

Apathy for my school was drilled into me when I walked on campus in the fall of 2000...by my fellow students! I would see 100's of students per day with UT/OU/A&M/etc... clothes on, and going to a football game? HA! Why would you want to go to a UNT game while the Longhorns/Aggies/Sooners/etc... were playing on TV?

This is why there are no traditions that were created/upheld by my generation. Here's hoping that the students on campus now (the ones who passed a bill to up tuition in order to build a new stadium) will begin to take pride in their university and their sports teams and make the games fun! Here's hoping the same students who came up with "Odufa-WHO? ODUFAWA!"(too bad that tradition just graduated) will be the same students who come up with something new at football games this fall. It's all about the students! When they get something viable going, the alumni section will be across the field doing the same thing, because we're all thirsty for it.

Sorry, but the Athletic Department and the Alumni Association cannot start these traditions.

Can you remember back to your days as a student? If some old fart from the Alumni Association told you some new thing to do during the game, would you have done it? What if your orientation counselor and fellow students told you about a new thing to do during the games? Which would you be more inclined to follow?

  7. Traditions are what draw people to the program and keep them coming back year after year. Otherwise there is little point in having an AD....and his/her staff. AND any school's traditions are not practiced in a vacuum away from the facilities/venues....that the AD is hired to manage.

But I think that the alumni association is as much (if not more) to blame for a lack of ,or the practicing of, traditions.

But no official from the alumni association will come on the board and give us an opportunity to openly dialogue with them about these issues.

    Bit alert?!?

    If so, :thumbsu: Carry on!

If not, where is the logic here? The ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT is established to run the ATHLETICS of the school, not generate cheers and traditions for the school. And, what on earth does the Alumni Association have to do with generating cheers and traditions? By the way, I believe the President of the Alumni Association is readily available to you on this very website, and you are very much engaged with him in open dialogue on this very issue, in this very thread!

Do you think a bunch of people in A&M's athletic department or their alumni association dreamed up their cult-like traditions? The answer is no. STUDENTS. Generate. Traditions.

  8. Don't most draftees hold out until they are more of a sure thing in the 1st round if they have remaining eligibility? If I remember correctly, there's quite a pay difference from 1st to second round.

...under the old CBA. We'll see how it all works out. I would love to see Mitchell here for the 2012-2013 season, but if he leaves as a lottery pick next year, that will probably mean UNT made some noise in the NCAA tourney, and that's alright with me!

  9. My take on Nelson is this - with the defensive line pretty much ignored in Dodge's initial recruiting class, he was working with what little he had. Still, the DL put up the most sacks since 2004, so he has them turning the corner.

One of the chief criticisms some of us had about Dodge is that he seemed to ignore the fact that the game up here is won and lost in the trenches. There are no secrets at this point in college football. Teams can defend the spread. That was somehow lost of Dodge and Ford.

In fact, I think the pendulum is swinging back the other way a little, not completely, but noticeably. You look at Alabama's grind it out win over Texas in the national title game a couple of seasons ago. What did they throw, five passes all game long? Also:

-Auburn last year, ran 15 more times than they passed, had 250+ yards rushing, and held Oregon's "high-powered" offense to 19 points.

-Florida shut down OU's record setting offense three seasons ago now on the defensive side of the ball, and throwing 14 times fewer than it ran...because they ran for 249 yards and held almost a 10 minute advantage in possessing the ball.

The thing is, if your run game is working, there's no reason to throw a bunch. And, you sure don't need to throw just for the hell of throwing it:

    (1) You wear out the defense while resting your own when your run game in ticking, and

    (2) You chew up the clock while keeping the opposing offense off the field.

This is all basic stuff...to coaches who are smart enough to play the percentages. The high scoring is sexy to some. But a win is a win whether it's by one point or 50. OU, Texas, and Oregon weren't handed national titles because they had sexy offenses. When it came time to battle it out in the trenches, they lost chances at those title by having their collective asses handed to them by coaches who understood basic football a little better.

Nelson is doing fine. It looks as though McCarney is getting him the bodies he needs as well. I like where AK-47 is now, but let's face it, it's easier if you don't have to start out with 205 pound defensive ends and wait for them to get built up.

How 'bout taking an all-conference DE and inexplicably moving him to DT where his production suffered greatly?

He's been in this business for a very long time, so there's no doubt he's good at what he does, but I have my doubts about Nelson. Hopefully his decisions will be augmented by coach McCarney, although I hope that even though coach McCarney is a DLine specialist, he doesn't get bogged down in coaching the DLine.

  10. Hmm. Looking at the map it appears that if you didn't donate at least $250 for the MGC you are just SOL huh? Can someone explain how we are going to attract anyone at all in the general public (or students for that matter) if the closest they can park is Fouts? Hopefully there will be a fleet of shuttle buses to transport fans to and from the site before AND after the game? Or do we wait until the first student gets nailed trying to cross the Ave D bridge or walking under 35 on Bonnie Brae before we do something?

There is parking at the Tennis/Soccer/Softball/volleyball complex as well as the old hotel parking lot. It wont get everyone on the south side of 35, but there's plenty of parking over there.

  11. Watching this crap that is playing out in DC and in Austin the last few months has really disappointed me and made me even a bit more jaded toward politicians...all politicians it seems. Both sides seem to be interested in getting elected and re-elected rather than rolling up their sleeves and actually doing the "people's work". I don't care which side of the aisle you are on, it seems both sides are only interested in prolonging their political careers and bowing to the special interest groups that pay into their campaign coffers. Where are the real leaders and real representatives who don't give a darn about what some special interest group thinks of their vote one way or the other and who are willing to make the tough decisions and compromise when it is in the best interests of the nation and its citizens? This is getting to be all about posturing and the bully pulpit until the last second and then...gee...something gets done. We all know there will be an agreement on the debt ceiling issue...so, why do all the childish crap before really getting down to business and hammering out a compromise agreement that works?

Seems to me that if our elected officials really had the citizens best interests in mind that this stuff would get done long before any potential crises developed. As much as I hate to say (as I am philosophically opposed to term limits for representatives and senators) it just may be time for term limits. That would, at least, limit the influence of some special interests as the folks being elected would know their time was limited...then the yahoos would have to come home and live under the laws they enacted while in office.

Maybe I am just frustrated with the current state of affairs in DC and in Austin, probably so, but there is a severe lack of real leadership in both parties from the very top down these days...and it is clearly showing.

Good grief, folks...get on with it and act like grownups for a change. OK, I feel better now...thanks. carry on......

    Can't trust any of them.

  12. You know what kind of uniform would really get us recognized?

One in which we win a bunch of football games.

If we win, I don't give a crap if we wear potato sacks.

A potato sack would severely hamper Lance's run at the Heisman/Doak Walker this year.
