I think beating Purdue and then winning the NIT helped get the program some national attention. Having one of the top defenses in the country has helped as well.

No doubt.   Hang around in the Top5 defenses in all of NCAA for multiple seasons, and people start to take notice.

I don't see an author for that article (sucks for that guy), but maybe he's plugged-in enough to know we've had 2 starters (in some capacity) out over the past month-&-a-half, and if we're full strength for the conference tournament, we're a scary team?  I don't know.

Our NIT Championship is going to get us some good looks the next few years.

This year, and maybe next year if we can finish the year strong.   After that, probably not.

Our NIT 'ship and FAU's Final4 appearance are not equal.  The staying power of a NIT championship doesn't linger nearly as long in a MBB pundit's mind.
As long as Coach May is at FAU, they'll get credit as long as they're playing good ball.

That isn't bashing the guy. That is saying he is a valuable role player. I don't get mad and complain about him every game when he doesn't score. BIG DIFFERENCE! Sorry I upset you. I should know better than to have a different view than some of you on this board. GMG

    Upset?  Nah.
And you're right, there are a couple guys here that say something over-the-top out of frustration.  Those guys can be dismissed.   But for the most part, you and the rest of us are saying the same things, just in different ways.   That's all I am trying to point out.

People need to quit bashing Stone. He plays hard and does what the coaches ask of him. He's seems to be a great teammate. IMO he is playing more than he should because of injuries. He isn't the offensive threat we would like him to be for this team but is a good defender and rebounder for his size, when not overused. With a healthy Jones and Noland, he probably plays 5-8 minutes a game giving Scott and Walker a short rest. He's a good 9th guy off the bench. If he was hurting the team, Hodge wouldn't play him. I trust the coaching staff, we aren't at practice and don't know what goes on behind the scenes.

You're taking the words of virtually every other poster here, and just moving them around to say the same thing.  But then you accuse us of "bashing" Stone.
He absolutely works hard.   All the guys do.
He's a great teammate. You'd better believe it... or he wouldn't be here/play.
Has a role on the team ("good defender and rebounder for his size").  Absolutely.  We all know he's not Allen Iverson out there.
He's being asked to do more than normal now, with Rubin & CJ out.  He's gotta step up.  No one is asking him to replicate Rubin or CJ's production point-for-point, but man...  26min... Give us something!
"He's a good 9th guy off the bench"... "5-8min/gm" -  Uh, buddy, YOU said that.  Stop bashing him!!

I don't get the criticism of Stone from some.  Not you specifically but perhaps others.  He seems to give full effort and intensity when he is in the game.  Is that not all we should expect?

If we're trying to win sportsmanship awards, sure!
If we're trying to win the AAC Championship and get into the NCAA Tournament, no!  We're going to need a little more.

Developing and playing more of the roster early in the season would totally help this.  Being out of gas or not having enough players to finish should never be a reason to lose in basketball when you can carry 15.

Huge difference between running out of 93 octane gas, and being able to drive to the finish on E85 when you're in a supercar... as we've seen while Rubin, and Buggs (now CJ) were out.   Stone, Walker, & Cotton played a combined 56 minutes, and finished with 7pts between the 3 of them (0 for Stone).

  7. Guys ran out of gas yesterday, and still played at team that color-commentator Mark Adams said he expects to win the AAC.
As we've seen over & over (and as @greenminer has already stated), NT's style makes good teams look bad.  So if the only time you ever watch another team is when they play NT... they're going to look bad, even if they win.

Once we're back to full strength, I anticipate not running out of gas late in these close games, and instead, digging out W's.

yeah, to them directly. Not quite the same as going public with triple fire emojis and “MAKING MOVES” when the guy is moving to a marginally more successful competitor. Not a big deal. Just weird…. But I don’t pretend to fully grasp the whole Coach O social media aura

    I agree here.
When you're trying to recruit for one school, your entire presence (especially, in coach O's case, the social media presence that makes you) should make it seem like that school is the only school that matters & it cannot get any better than it is here.
Your social media presence should not indicate that going from UNT to IASt is a " 🔥 🔥 move".   Because football players all over DFW see this sentiment (whether NT is recruiting them or not)... that's how big Coach O's Social Media presence is.

Mumbling in my dad’s voice … “Just allow her to have the last word and maybe she’ll move on.”  Thought I would need a Mrs. first.

The old “write it - delete it - don’t press send” bit didn’t work either. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Oh, here’s one. Tell them they won. That should do the trick.

    Hey guys/gals - You win!!! 🥇

I now declare all message board warriors that haven’t been to one road game- EVER (and home games too) as TRUE MEAN GREEN FANS! So let it be said, so let it be done.

Hopefully we can discuss UAB. If not, cue up the ECU stolen win or uniforms. Haven’t discussed the UNT God in 5 minutes. I wonder how the weather is in Kansas.🤔 That’s always a good one.

Well that clears up another myth. I was told that once a starting lineup is set, it only changes due to illness or injury - it’s the North Texas way. If McCasland approached Perry after a few games, because he earned the right to start, then the myth is just that - a myth.

And here I was thinking that Allen wasn’t starting because of “The North Texas Way”.

I don't get you dude.  Do you have an axe to grind w/Hodge?
Maybe Hodge is starting Moulaye over Allen because it's "The North Texas Way" (I dunno where that came from).   It's his ship now.
If it's working, why change it?  Allen is certainly still eating.   And obviously, he's out there in crunch time... at the end of the game (which is what this discussion was about, originally).

If it’s a lie, then “he” (Hoo is he?) told it - TP asked to come off the bench his first year. It had zero to do with McCasland setting a “defensive tone” to start a game.

Does that fun fact change any argument?

I'm well aware of the circumstances around TP coming off the bench in '21-'22.  There are plenty of interviews about it (because it was so weird after TP showed how dominant he could be) where all 3 guys explained it.
JJ was a returning Senior and team captain.
TP had just got here & hadn't earned anything yet.
JJ started the season over TP.   It worked well in setting the defensive tone of the games.
McCasland approached Tylor about starting, because he had earned it after a few games.
TP basically said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it.", McCasland agreed, and so he continued to come off the bench.  Sometimes that stint was for several minutes to start the games.   Sometimes, it wasn't but a couple times up & down the floor.

Every team is different.   That's what makes it so fun!

Not sure what games you're watching.  The strategy is no different from football or soccer or any team sport playing the best players (starters) from the beginning of the game.  You don't sit Tom Brady, Luka, or Messi till the second quarter to bring them into the game.

I don't think it ever took TP 10 minutes to come into the game... unless JJ was playing out of his mind & we were cruising, say, against weaker teams.  Even then, it would likely be time for JJ to have a breather anyway.

I think we can all agree (well, maybe?) that Coach Hodge's style is not common.
He's not playing the fast-paced, high-scoring, transition ball like a lot of other schools.   So with different styles comes different needs.
Not everything is cookie-cutter... and I'm glad it's not, because in NT b-ball's case, it's so fun to watch the frustration levels of opposing teams crank up throughout the games when the pace is not to their liking.

Sure, you want a good group on the floor to finish out a close game.  But that's not as important if it's not a close game.

The start of the game, in my opinion, is the most important of the game.  It sets the tone of the game!  You can put doubt into your opponent, sometimes even takes them out of their game plan early if you build a significant enough advantage.  The starters should be your best players.

Like we've seen over the past few seasons with JJ Murray starting over Tylor Perry, the starters should be the ones who will best set the coach's desired tone for the early stages of the game.   In JJ/TP's case, obviously coach McCasland and coach Hodge wanted a defensive tone.   Then, when they feel the game is going as desired, or we're falling behind & need a sparkplug, sub JJ, and insert TP.

Likewise, at the end of the game, if NT is holding a lead & need stops, insert JJ to lock them down.
If NT is in a slugfest/shootout at the end of the game, keep TP in to hit clutch shots.

You're just using your personnel's strengths to accomplish the desired results.   "Best Players start", works most times, but not all the time.

    0-6 Shockers win 77-72. Hahahahahahahahaha

I know it helps us to have SMU win, but I just can’t pull for the Phonies.

really, either way helps NT, right?
We beat both teams, so either SMU wins and our win over WSU doesn't help at all, or WSU wins and our win over SMU is cheapened a little.

  15. I hate moral victories as much as the next guy, but I think there’s a lot of good to take away from today’s game.
Looking forward to the return trip March, 6th…. Likely with seeding/byes on the line.  Hopefully we’re at full strength.

Hats off to Davis.  That dude’s a baller.

are we that excited about Chandler Morris?

    an oft-injured/oft-replaced QB?

WAAAY too early to start poo-pooing him.

In EMorris’ offense, yeah, we’re excited about him.

    2 hours ago, UNTLifer said:

Exactly and his motive behind this hire was to steal Chandler from us, period.

The only reason for hiring Chad Morris to be WRs/PGC is for Chandler?   Nah.  NT would have been wise to pick him up in some capacity, IMO.  He was OC at Clemson during their come-up & has HC experience. He has a brilliant offensive mind, similar to their current HC.  Why wouldn't Kinne want him?
That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened.  Hope Chandler sticks with us!
