Man, KNTU opting out of sports coverage is a just a big kick in the balls to anyone (like me) who wanted to believe Denton was getting on board the sports train.

I really wish athletics would stay at KNTU..  Be anchored in Denton by Denton radio.  Plant your feet where you stand and grow from there.  Not just outsource this effort to a city 30 miles away.  It feels defeating.  All sorts of implications, and none of them are good.

I say all that, and know full well the benefits of coverage growth on a commercial station.  Maybe there is someway to have best of both worlds.

(Would help tons to stop getting football humiliated on regional and national TV)

There is no coverage growth. According to the link below, KHYI has been a sports affiliate of the Mean Green Sports Network since 1974: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KHYI, broadcasting UNT football and basketball games. I know I've listened to some UNT sports being broadcast on 95.3 before this year, so the linked article can't be completely wrong. In other words, I see the radio broadcasts being not switched, from 88.1 to 95.3, but just removed from 88.1. And I swear I've actually been able to listen to broadcasts from 95.3 before this year which could be understood clearly enough.

I think someone's trying, with some success, to gaslight us.

I know that there have been a lot of questions pertaining to UNT Sports media lately and I wanted to help clarify a few items that I am hearing about from sources:

1).  KNTU re-formatted this summer and they no longer wanted to carry sports.  That said, their coverage map is almost identical to 95.3 FM.  KNTU is what is termed a non-commercial station which makes it difficult to sell sponsorships.  So in a way this new set-up is good for us.  We just need to get more people on board with the change to 95.3.

Why would anyone care what some NT administrator/faculty member wants to do or worse yet a student relative to radio coverage?

You don't throw away decades of tradition because someone doesn't want to cover sports.

Terminate that employee or give an option to cover sports or resign.

I really hate to see people fired, probably from jobs that they love, but radio probably has some of the least job security of any field of work. And a lot of the time, people aren't fired for lack of listeners, but because management wanted to go in a different direction. I'm like many former music students, disappointed about the format change at 88.1, but their not wanting to broadcast sports is really like a kick in the teeth from the hired help to the owners.

  3. The reception for 95.3 alternated between our football game and something called the "Black Information Network". It seems now that 2 different stations can occupy the same numbers on your dial, sort of alternately fading in and out, but hey, maybe I'm not up to speed.

I went to Voertman's earlier in the day on Saturday.  The selection there was poor as well.  That store is sad compared to what it used to be.

Well, Paul Voertman, RIP, had deep connections to UNT, perhaps someone could inform the current ownership about the benefits of supporting the UNT community.

I hope we win this game at UTEP, if we lose, it will set the tone for the season. I don't see us beating SMU but that is the upset I would really like. A this point I have lost all faith in Seth and I think we will lose both games.

I hope we're prepared to  play in El Paso. I can think of times we've gone out there and looked really bad.

It came across to me in his wording/context that he would only come back as HC to a P5 job.  Like he is too good now for FCS or G5 again.  And then he said only if the situation was right, as in not total rebuild or lower end P5.  Just how it sounded to me.

But some coaches are skiddish after what has happened to Bryan Harsin's move from Boise to Auburn. It's like the boosters and Admin turned on him in one season.

I didn't find anything in the linked article to back up what is bolded from your quote above. Considering what UAB went through while he was there, something well  beyond a "total rebuild", why would he retire only to take a demotion or make a lateral move. And "situation is right" can be interpreted in different ways, such as the various stakeholders being on board with a hire and otherwise not already being in a toxic relationship.

Anyway, I don't really think he's some Urban Meyer clone. UAB couldn't have done much better, and he's done a lot more with less than then the coaches we've had in the same time frame. He seems like a decent and serious guy.

  7. If you take a little time to navigate the Airbnb website (yeah, I know it's harder now, and I'm an Airbnb host), you can figure out a general location for a listing, and make note of a major street intersection shown on the map. You could then enter that street info into google maps and look at a "street view" of the area, and just kind of look at the neighborhood, which might tell you something (how well maintained things are, etc.).  Also, reviews for a listing are expected to comment on the location (and many will mention whether it's safe or not), so I would pay attention to what reviewers are saying.

Kinda odd he is already turning his nose up at returning to UAB.  Says he accomplished everything there and turned that chapter, but may consider a P5 opening for next year if the situation was right.  Sounds like an Urban Meyer type to me.

Sounds like he hasn't left anything on the field for UAB and is finally taking care of his own health. Since he's already had P5 offers, and passed them up out of what can only be called loyalty, why throw him in with all that Urban Meyer has come to represent?

And it sounded like a hypothetical question, but why would anyone remotely qualified pass up the offer of being hfc at a P5 program, unless there are serious quality of life concerns with the types of people to be dealt with at such a program? Win or lose, stay or get fired, the money is good.

Does this bother anyone else or just me?

Yes, for reasons which eluded me at first. Getting older, you know.

That was the problem. EVERYBODY jumped to turn off KNTU as soon as the Mean Green post-game shows ended. That jazz-crap was unbearable to all except the most extreme masochists, and the horrific ratings proved it.

So, do you listen to KNTU now? I don't, as I not an extreme masochist, or whatever demographic is being targeted.

This likely has more to do with engaging the RTVF students with something they're more interested in than jazz than it does trying to become the most listened to station in DFW.

Well, hopefully it will work, but it sounds like there is some desire to at least be more listened to. I will have to say that every music school alum I have mentioned this to has been extremely disappointed. And I do love some of the music that's called "indie" or "alt", and would usually alternate between 88.1 and 91.7,but I haven't heard any song of the new 88.1 format yet that makes me want to listen all the way through it.

Maybe it's like someone said, that they're just putting up placeholders until the students come back. And I'm not sure of what everything is like reception wise in Denton. Do they not already get 91.7? Radio is a tough go these days, but maybe this format change can thread some kind of needle between what's hip enough to attract these RVTF students, popular enough for others in the area to tune in, but differs enough from what is already available from some tough DFW competition that makes a point of playing musicians "out of Denton".
