  1. Yeah really, when the only credible quote I saw from Obama on the issue was that "families should be off-limits, or something like that". But, even as a Democrat, I feel sorry for them. Probably a lot more people would run for public office if they didn't start thinking about how strange some of their family members might seem to the outside world.
  2. I can't remember what the tv ad was for, but the visual was a woman visualizing her husband's stuff in the street, then the flamethrower comes into play...
  3. I was thinking about posting this as a separate thread, but a lot has already been mentioned about our special teams problems, so I'll just pose a question. Is it possible that that North Texas lost, not because our special teams are so bad, but because KSU special teams were so good? Adler mentioned last year that North Texas should hire the guy who is now the special teams coordinator at KSU, Jeff Rodgers. After reading Rodgers' resume at that time (when he was Assistant Special Teams Coordinator for the SF 49ers, I agreed with Adler. Someone posed the question, "why would anyone in their right mind leave SF to take a position at North Texas?". I guess the same question could be asked as to why he would want to move to Manhattan, but my main point is, shouldn't we have someone whose only responsibility is special teams play? It is such an important part of the game, and is increasingly so, it would seem to me. I thought some of you might want to take a look at Rodger's resume from a KSU football site, especially since he was a four year letterman for North Texas: Jeff Rodgers bio
  4. Don't make us wait any further; assume the position!
  5. Does that work better than wrapping aluminum foil around your teeth?
  6. Generally, I have to agree with those here who have said that it's ok to keep trying to score late in the game, especially since that gives a chance for the reserves to put some points on the board. I do think it was kind of pointless to kick the field goal because: (1. ) The kicker had already gotten 6 points on PAT, and the field goal wasn't much longer than an extra point attempt, and (2.) There's always a chance that running a play can result in a player getting hurt, with the players on field goal kicking units often being hard to replace. That being said, these kinds of things will happen, as D1 college football is played as a high stakes rankings game for post-season bowl invitations, if nothing else. I think that the takeaway for North Texas football is to become proficient in all aspects of special teams play, and start scoring more points, including field goads; point after kicks must become routinely successful.
  7. I think that's the key thing. By the time tropical weather systems move this far inland, they are usually no more than tropical depressions, and can bring much needed rain, as happened in West Texas in late July of this year. I was in Fort Davis to experience some of that, and other than a less than spectacular star party at McDonald Observatory, it was quite pleasant to experience those summer showers in the beautiful Davis Mountains.
  8. Rick, I'm wondering, based on the game results, if you think the KSU secondary deserves the praise it's gotten (yes, BEFORE last night's game), in some of the media outlets . Dwayne
  9. I was wondering if we win the coin toss next time, if it might be a good idea to elect to kick off. I just feel that we've had a lack of confidence in receiving kickoffs and that it might send a signal to the defense that they've won some deserved respect.
  10. I agree with the first three sentences in the body of your message (bolded here). Everything else, including the title (which suggests she can sing the National Anthem), seems to make questionable assumptions. However, since she was the Miss Alaska runnerup, you may know of some musical talent she possesses. I will say, that even if she IS a good singer, whether or not she can perform the Star Spangled Banner is another question entirely. Hey, I only got a minor from the music school, but I promise you, there are tough music critics in Denton. I'm sure that some of them are Republicans, just due to their sheer numbers, but they wouldn't necessarily cut anyone slack for not performing well on stage. I'm really off topic for football here (and will be again probably, but so is this thread. By the way, (and is this legitimate to mention to potential recruits?), Denton sure has some beautiful women!
  11. Generally, it seems pointless to look back at decisions, but one guy Adler mentioned as someone to hire was the guy (Jeff Rogers), formerly of UNT, and part of the special teams coaching for the SF 49ers at the time, we were lacking linebacker AND special teams coaching (in terms of results, anyway). I certainly would have liked to see him at North Texas; don't always agree with Adler, but did at that time. Someone back then asked why someone would consider moving to Denton from SF. Probably for the same reason he moved to Manhattan; better pay and a move up the career ladder. One thing UNT has to get over is something I can only think of as an inferiority complex; that no person of talent would come here given other choices. Not true: people of great talent have come, gone, and returned to Denton. It's a pleasant community with considerable amenities. I feel confident in describing North Texas likewise. It does seem odd that there's little mention here (maybe there is in other media) about a City the size of Denton having TWO universities of the size and tradition of UNT and TWU. However, I would personally like to see people on this board refrain from bemoaning the high profile of the Music and other programs which HAVE had greater success. Is the way to achieve greater success for the program(s) we wish to succeed, mainly football, basketball (mens' and womens'), and other athletic programs, to be found in breeding resentment against our more successful academic and extracurricular programs? Just a question that's occurred to me on occasions.
  12. Hey, thanks for the writeup, Dodge2007. that's the kind of stuff I needed to hear. I don't remember where I read how well known K-State is for their secondary, but you seem to be validating that. I really think we can get better on ST and O-line play throughtout the season. Well, I'm off, first to save my Gustav storm surge model for the color-blind (mainly myself), then to church.
  13. You know, I'm thinking the same. We DO need to run, although I understand why some here are questioning the "run first" strategy we had tonight. Some have written about the terrific talent KSU has in d-backs, so maybe we just took what they gave us. However, the ability of Jamario Thomas to break a long one was the key to the recent games in which we did win. I think Montgomery is much closer to giving us that than Mosley, although Mosley has had good stats. Cam's performance at KSU is deserving of more playing time, in my opinion.
  14. Could this be our remember the Alamo, Pearl Harbor (hey, really reaching)? To be so disrespected at the end of that game as to have them kick that field goal. Will this not make most of us start thinking about ways to make our school, our athletic program, our FOOTBALL team not to suffer such ignominy. Building towards that ASSWHIPPING we'll give KSU for the 2010 opener in our new stadium, in which we TEAR DOWN THE GOALPOSTS in our STADIUM OPENER?
  15. I was thinking the same thing after this game. If we don't have something, I hope we find it soon, reverse play, designed quarterback scramble, whatever.
  16. QUOTE(emmitt01 @ Aug 28 2008, 10:41 PM) 42-17 Not me, but after UTEP went into a nosedive for the second half of last season, it appeared that the miners were in serious need of a running game. They don't seem to have found one yet.
  17. Oh, I doubt that the whole thing is a big deal; at least he left in good academic standing. It just seemed like others were far enough ahead of him in the depth charts that he was still unlikely to get playing time; I just question the diabetes as explanation. Marcus King didn't seem to have any difficulty getting a release, apparently in search of more playing time. The explanation for Padron's leaving (diabetes) just seems obviously incorrect and unnecessary. From a team standpoint, it will be ok, because Padron didn't seem to be challenging anyone for playing time. On a personal level, I think it's best if both players and coaches are honest with themselves and to those depending on them. But hey, it's an imperfect world.
  18. Of all those who have left the program over the last year, Padron seems to stand out for oddness. Mainly, why would he be described by Dodge as leaving due to struggles with diabetes (certainly a legitimate concern), only to resurface very shortly as a walkon at SMU. Loneliness can affect people of college age, like anyone else; maybe he wanted to be around his brother. It does seem like going from starting for a team which may have not lost during his playing years (SLC) to not playing at all for a team which struggled to win 2 games last year might be difficult to handle. I'm assuming at this point that the diabetes had little if anything to do with his departure from UNT.
  19. Good for him. I've come to realize that some people who struggle in other settings do well in private schools as student athletes. I'm sure it's the same for coaches.
  20. Do any of these raters ever rank special teams? If they did, we could look really bad based on last season.
  21. It kinda reminds me of the midget in "Me, Myself, and Irene", who told Jim Carrey's character, "I'm going to teach you (deleted) something about a low center of gravity".
  22. Maybe it was just based on the first game of the season.
  23. Well, it's easy to see that the Sagarin ratings don't have much to do with last year's head to head matchups (Michigan-App State, KSU-Texas, UNT-La-Monroe,etc.). FAU could get them started not having much to do with this year's by beating Texas. I guess I would have to agree with Hawaii being #55; really it was a weak schedule that kept them undefeated. I wonder if Georgia is getting a little too much respect this year for blowing them out last year.
  24. North Texas might not be any good, but it’s a whole bunch of fun. Is that sort of like writing on the wall in the men's room, "For a good time, call (insert name and/or phone number)."
