  1. I started a simple thread that led to all of this. I get tired of hearing about the offense, the lack of production and consistency of the offense, QB play, lack of WR play, etc. when the whole purpose of the thread was that their was not one mention in the press conference coverage about the defense. No one want to challenge Dodge on his defense. It is his defense, itsn't it? Our 4-3 scheme is and our mutliple blitz packages are so basic. But no one has even challenged Dodge on that. All they call for is the head of Mendoza. Does Dodge not have any responsibilty?
  2. October 02, 2007 UNT QB update, news on Chatman A couple of interesting notes came out of the first day of media availability this week at UNT. Here goes ... Head coach Todd Dodge addressed his quarterback situation at his weekly media conference and said that Daniel Meager will be his starter Saturday at Louisiana-Lafayette. Meager played well at times against SMU and Florida Atlantic but has also struggled at times. Dodge said he had no plans laid out to play Giovanni Vizza like he did last week when the freshman played the second quarter against Arkansas. Unlike last week in its game against the Hogs, UNT appears to have a decent chance to win. It doesn't surprise me that Dodge isn't going to lock himself into a substitution pattern -- at least not publicly. Let the Dan-Wagon roll. In other UNT news, sophomore defensive back Desmon Chatman has been suspended from the team indefinitely. Chatman has played sparingly this season. He started two games last year and led UNT with four pass breakups. Posted by Brett Vito at 11:08 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
  3. That is awesome. Some old cogger getting after it.
  4. Penson is a part of the future of the UNT defense, without a doubt. I see him on KO coverage but Dodge made it sound like he got reps against Arkansas. I just didn't see him on the field much how about you? Is our KO return inept or is it just me? Poor wedge blocking and returners who are dancing around or is that just me?
  5. I am just sick and tired of hearing so many questions posed by our own media to Dodge about SLC during the taping and radio shows that are supposed to be about UNT football. Are we more concerned with SLC? Or does someone have the stones to interview him about our defense, how about why are WR's could not get off the line of scrimmage when they pressed us in coverage all night long? Why did Brandon Jackson feel like we were not prepared? Why isn't AJ Penson not playing when he is one of the fastest LB's on our team (who has burned his shirt). I am not sure Penson got any reps in the game. Yet Arkansas was getting outside our LB's the entire second half. We are not in high school anymore. Lets leave the SLC program down in Southlake. Is Todd ever going to take any ownership in our defense? Or is Mendoza the scapegoat?
  6. You know what I am sick and tired of talking about and having Dodge comparing and talking about: SLC. Those types of questions by the board, the media, the in house marketing guys, the interviews at Hooters or the new location all need to be left behind. UNT is not SLC. Lets quit talking about SLC and what Dodge did there or Mendoza or Riley or whatever. Lets talk about the future and where UNT is headed. Lets leave the talk about SLC behind us. No college board should give a damn about a high school program that our HC used to coach at. Its not relevant anymore. His success at SLC is not relevant anymore, it got him this job and now that program should be put to bed on this board. I am tired of all the comparisons, both positive and negative. Why do great NCAA basketball coaches never make it in the NBA? Why did Faust and others not exceed going from high school to the collegiate level? Lets talk about now and how we are going to get there. The momentum of hiring a high school legend only goes so far, and I am glad TD is here but the continued talk about SLC and his high school coaches must end. Lets discuss UNT football now and in the future but please, no more SLC.
  7. No one has the stones to ask TD any kind of question regarding his D-coordinator. That ain't going to happen. He is also going to call Meager his guy. I am concerned about moral and whether the team wants Meager to be their guy??? I am also concerned with the Defense and whether they believe in Mendoza.
  8. Vizza threw the out route on that interception. The ball was thrown right over the pylon. DB made a great jump but I wonder if the intended target ran the correct route. Only the offensive coaches know if that was his fault or not. From the video screen, it looked like their was some miscommunicaton. I believe at that time we had all freshman in the game. So who knows. I do know that GV moves the ball and stands awfully tall in the pocket for such a young man (kid). He gets little reps and might be trying to do too much. I agree, with a previous post, he has only seen OU and that was four weeks ago. Dodge doesn't need a QB controversy. I don't think we have one. It is fairly apparent who should start the rest of the way. Vizza needs to go because the Sun Belt conference is out of the question this season. You wonder if Vizza was Riley, if things would be different at this time. I think Meager is a nice QB but just doesn't pack the punch that the freshman does. Vizza is very exciting to watch and he does play with his heart and lays it out there. I watched him on the sidelines, he is a motivator. we have no one else out there trying to pump anyone else up. He came in down 35 or 42 to zero and he acts like it is 0-0.
  9. To reflect at my first ever road game, I thought the atmoshpere was tremendous. Arkansas looked a lot like Oklahoma, big, fast, depth, and UNT was overmatched. We just do not have the ability to hang with this type of athlete at this time. We can rip this guy or that guy or whatever but we just don't have it. Call it scheme, call it talent, call it whatever, but we were overmatched against a team that had something to prove. The one thing I notice about our fan section is how they respond to Vizza. They respond because he responds. You can tell Vizza plays with every ounce of heart that a player can play with. The way he runs, the way stays in the pocket and takes hits and then continues to stay in the pocket is unheard of for a true freshman. Vizza has NOT played in a game since Sept. 1. No game time and then he can come in cold and perform like that in the second quarter (give him major credit). He had the momentum but from reading the Arkansas paper this morning, his plan was to use Giovanni only in the second quarter. He had no plans for Giovanni in the 4th. Meager will throw up big numbers again the next two weeks because of the level of competition but is this what UNT really needs? Are we band aiding our future, hell yes. Vizza is a winner, his body language is amazing and he backs it up. The whole crowd and the team feed off his style of play. You can really sense it on the sidelines. The team wants Giovanni and Dodge wants to hold true, not reallys sure that Dodge is doing us a favor by stating that Vizza will remain the back-up. I believe, based on the OU and Arkansas game, against superior talent, that Vizza would tear up the Sun Belt the rest of the way. He just has a nack for making plays.
  10. Hey, I don't think the Jones kid from ND pussed out, he just new they were going with the high profile prospect. You can't blame any kid for transferring for playing time. I would rather play at WhatsamattaU than sit on the pine at UT. Look at Riley, he was never going to get a sniff. He would have eventually transferred. I had no problem with Snead leaving UT. The Coaches made the decision on McCoy so Snead leaves. Guys want to play ball, any competitor wants to play regardless of the level D-1 vs, AA. Sam Houston has really prospered by big school transfers, I have no problem with that,
  11. I believe Dodge gets a pass for three seasons. After that, all is legendary status of a high school guru is gone. High school kids three or four years from now will have never heard of Todd Dodge and the SLC dynasty that he once was a part of. Three years and its his record at UNT, that will decide his fate. No one has a crystal ball of what the outcome will be. We can only hope for the best. From watching the interviews on TV and on the Mean Green college site, he is slightly arrogant and that is good win your winning games but that will only go so far when your losing. Jump on the UNT program, not the Dodge program, and lets see where it takes the University and the football program. Dodge has brought a lot of good things to the university. Give it time and UNT will know what it has after three seasons. That is not to say that the program should settle for anything but progress and positive direction. I know people don't like to hear this but Dodge and his staff are learning on the fly about this age of college football. Dodge and his two coordinators are learning that many of the schemes they ran in HS (because of the coaching and quality of athlete) don't work at this level. But they will adjust. Patience is the name of the game right now.
  12. That was a great win for the BELT. Maybe FAU can do some more damage this weekend with another upset of a BCS team.
  13. SLCOutsider, I agree with a lot of your posts. But for example, in the Westlake-state championship game, if memory serves me correctly, Westlake wasn't even lined up over a WR on one or two Touchdown throws trying to get personnel in the game and SLC had wide open receivers for touchdowns. That is the the kind of stuff that you will not see at the collegiate level. Dodge outsmarted many high school coaches. Dodge and his staff don't teach in school, they are coaches only. Many schools have their coaches teaching most of the day and that can make a difference. Dodge's spread is nothing new for many of the programs we play. Dodge and the mean green are going to have to out execute our opponents. Dodge will not flat out (out coach'em) any more.
  14. It won't matter unless he gets some quality minutes with the game on the line. TD hopefully will put him in early when we and Arkansas have something to play for.
