  1. The SEC schools are all their state's signature school. SL's recruiting focus is rightfully centered on the 4 DFW counties, as is the school marketing strategy. I don't have time for a twitter fight with a message board troll, I have a bowl game to pack for. #GoMeanGreen #BeatTroy #SeeYouInNewOrleans.
  2. For some last minute suggestions. Best Revellion Diner (multi-course, Christmas time meal) Can't really argue with this list. I really like Muriels on Jackson Square. https://nola.eater.com/maps/best-reveillon-dinners-new-orleans-nola Best Museum & History Stuff The Presbytre. The Mardi Gras & Katrina exhibits are excellent. On Jackson Square, next to St. Louis Cathedral ($5ish) St. Louis Cathedral. Go inside, take a look around. (Free) WW2 Museum. This is takes a while, so you'll want to give yourself a half day or more.
  3. This seems like a really bad marketing strategy. You go after the bigger, more general market and then focus down from there. Also nothing makes your program look small time like advertising in the Nocona News & the Pilot Point Post. Football has to sell itself. One of the ways you do that is by building a game day atmosphere that fans want to be part of. The issue isn't marketing the games. The issue is the value proposition offered at the games. Football game. Alma mater. Family Four Pack. Fireworks. Kids Zone. Big Scrappy. Beer in the Stadium. Beer Garden. Tailgating. Those are the types of things that draw in casual fans. On and winning. People love winning.
  4. These are weak excuses. Most finals are over by Thursday. 2001-2004 New Orleans Bowls were on Tuesdays. Several of those were during finals week. I remember having to get a waiver to take my finals early the Saturday before to go to the 2004 bowl. Most bowl games involve some travel. A weekend game sure beats a weekday game for travel. And an 8 hour road trip, 1 hour flight is nothing for travel. All of Bowl season is near Christmas. This game is more than a week before Christmas.
  5. Don’t gamble anywhere other than the casino. I haven’t seen any of this years, but in 2002 my wife found a gaming room in the back of a t-shirt shop. Needless to say, it didn’t payout. No razzle dazzle.
  6. Wife and I are shooting for the party at Borgne.
  7. Best gelato/sweets: Sucre on Conti in between Royal & Chartres (by Exchange Alley). Wife and kids like the candy, I really like the bar and appetizers up stairs.
  8. I'm so excited for this team right, now but I'm cautiously optimistic. I think the coaching staff has done a great job in two years and really has this team a step-a-head of where we would normally be in this type of rebuilding process. Normally one season after a 1-11 season, you can expect 3 wins and we came away with 5 and snuck into a bowl. Two seasons into a rebuild you can hope to be .500, we have 9 wins, swept the division, and won every home game. Three seasons into a rebuild and you start looking for bowl berths and bowl wins. Even if this team doesn't win on Saturday, I know they are step-a-head of where they would be. I also know this means it's time for us fans to step up. We've got to support our team and show that we travel. If you can make it the game, GO! If you can afford to sponsor a student for $10 bucks, DO IT! Don't have season tickets for 2018? Put them on your Christmas list. Records, season ticket sales, and previous bowl numbers are the key to bigger, and better bowl invites. #SeeYouInNOLA #NewDenton #GoMeanGreen
  9. I talked to folks out in East Texas today and they say the bridge work will be completed by Wednesday. http://www.txdot.gov/inside-txdot/media-center/local-news/tyler/063-2017.html
  10. Good news. Looks like the 200 & 300 blocks will be open for this weekend. 400 block will be closed.
  11. I plan on making a Turn Over Chain out of Mardi Gras beads, or does the NCAA frown on that kind of thing.
  12. The FQ and Bourbon Steet is not the war zone some of these posts are describing. Like all big cities and entertainment districts you should be aware of your surroundings. I go to New Orleans a few times a year. Just be smart.
  13. Street Performers If you watch and enjoy, then tip. Don’t take a picture and not tip. They will harass you. Strip Clubs The city has cracked down on the bad ones. Don’t go to the small ones by yourself and don’t use a credit card.
  14. I think we'll have a good showing, but this something we are going to have to get better at. #NewDenton goes bowling, so we better be ready for December travel. The AD's office needs to start putting out the hints about the bowls as soon as we get 6 wins. A lot of us could have got cheap, refundable airfare a month ago. Every media outlet had us in a DFW bowl or New Mexico, if that's not the case then the AD's office needs to be telling the media otherwise, even if it's unofficial. Or just offer a "blind" bowl travel package as soon as we are bowl eligible. $60 tickets, $150 hotels, done.
  15. We've got a really good list going of things to do, but there are also some things to avoid. New Orleans has very weird hustle culture, with an ever churning group trying to run various scams. At first it might seem fun to give a guy a dollar for a classic joke, but you quickly get noted as a mark and the hustle can quickly move from fun to intimidating to a crime. Street Hustles. "Know where you get dem' shoes?" "I bet I can spell your first name" "Let me shine those shoes" "Hold this hat" "Party Police" "I'm just trying to get some food" "I'm trying to get home" "The shelter is full tonight" Wastes of Money "Weed pops" "Any Ministry" or "non-profit" "kids in the same color shirt with donation buckets"
  16. Bourbon Street Drinks. Yes, we all know there is more to New Orleans that Bourbon Street. But usually everyone visiting as at least one night out on the famous party street. First Timers: Pat O'Brien's Hurricane and Tropical Isle Hand Grenade. These are iconic drinks and you need to see what the hype is about. At Pat O's you get to trade in your glass for a souvenir or a cash deposit on the glass. So don't just leave your cup on your table when your done. Everyone Else: Resurrection at Spirts on Bourbon (The blue Bar Rescue Drink) Shark Attack at Tropical Isle Frozen Irish Coffee at Erin Rose on Conti (This cures hangovers, I swear) Absinthe Frappe at The Old Absinthe House (I never remember if these are good, and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing) Huge Ass Beer various establishments For those who go above and beyond: The 21 Stop Tour! https://nola.eater.com/maps/twenty-iconic-drinks-and-where-to-find-them-in-new-orleans
  17. I'm glad they are offering student packages. This is a good deal for what it is, I just wish they were offering students and alumni a 2 day option. I don't know anyone who ever wants to leave New Orleans at 5 p.m. and miss out on a Saturday night on Bourbon street, so you can make it make to Denton at 2 a.m.
  18. Just saw this on the news. Traffic delay on I-20 in East Texas. https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/I-20-to-Shut-Down-for-Days-in-East-Texas-463043743.html
  19. Sounds good. Wife and I are to try to make the pre-game party a Borgne.
  20. Try this for hotels. http://www.neworleansbowl.org/travel/ And yes, the team link does reroute you through ticketmaster, but its part of the UNT game block.
  21. The school room block is a pretty good deal. http://meangreenpostseason.com/
  22. This doesn't sound like #NewDenton. On game day, I've parked at the square, and taken the shuttle to the game. The square was decked out with banners, and there was game day posters on windows of every business. We get a lot further my looking for ways to partner with city and blame the city. The key to these types of business relationships is money. As fans we need to support the businesses that support the team.
  23. I've done the cemetery tour, but it was pre-Katrina and before the Catholic Church started requiring licenses for tour guides. The best tour, which is also free, is the National Park Service Tour. The Park Service has two locations in the FQ. The visitors center on Decatur has the tour. The tour is once a day in the mornings. The other location is the jazz center near the French Market. The jazz center has performances and is great for kids. https://www.nps.gov/jela/french-quarter-site.htm https://www.nps.gov/jela/planyourvisit/upload/Program-Calendar-Dec-2017.pdf
  24. Brunch. Brunch is a full contact sport in New Orleans. It's a great way to eat at some of the high end places without paying a ton. Brennan's on Royal is an institution (but I thinks its a bit pricey for breakfast). My favorite is Restaurant R'evloultion on Bienville. For low key, low cost I like the Ruby Slipper. They have a couple of locations, but there's one on Canal and another on Magazine.
