  1. Coaches poll https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/polls/coaches-poll/
  2. Understandable. I'd say that'll correct itself as guys get into a rythm and become more comfortable playing together. Jones has the talent to be a 10+ ppg guy. Eady and Martinez are both proven efficient scorers based on their previous FBS experience although Eady has been abysmal so far. 8% from the field, 11% from 3, and 25% from the charity stripe. Yikes. Huntsberry hasn't been much better. Those two are the only ones that worry me so far. As bad as Stone has been shooting, that's also not what he's in there for. All that to say, these guys didn't just forget how to shoot once they got to UNT. Other than McBride, we've replaced all of last year's losses with better shooters (thinking mainly of Murray and Bell). It'll be fine by the time we get to conference play.
  3. Depends what you mean by "note." Are you expressing concern that we don't have enough scorers or simply pointing out that offensive struggles continued but we have potential for better?
  4. Poor take. We were easing in two of our best players who were on minutes restrictions. For the most part, the team was in command save for a couple stretches. DJ mentioned that the team had only had 6 practices in the past month due to illness. Add in Rubin coming back from a major knee injury as well as Tylor nursing a knee and it's not hard to see why there's struggles at times. That said, I feel much better now than I did at 4:59 pm today. There's really good potential with Rubin and Tylor leading the guards. Martinez, Ousmane, and Scott are going to give people trouble at all times of the game since we have some bigs to bring off the bench and can adjust our guys into more varying combinations. Still looking for Eady and Huntsberry to find their groove but if they can find their shot and Stone keeps improving and being a high-energy guy, this will end up as good or better than last year's squad with a solid 8-man rotation. I'm excited.
  5. The only thing he needs to do is find another way to say "shoots at a high clip." He'll find his groove. I thought he did really well overall. I enjoyed hearing his perspective as a guy who really earned everything on the court.
  6. Scott needs to be unleashed. He looks like such a better shooter than last year. He looks smooth releasing the ball. Needs a dang green light if he doesn't have it.
  7. Fuente did what he did at Memphis before they were "P6" and took over one of the worst teams in the country. They went from 2-10 before Fuente to beating two P5 schools, including number 13 Ole Miss by 13 points in year 4 meaning their seniors were CUSA recruits. Malzahn wasn't exactly a first pick of that coaching carousel either is the point. Plenty of programs passed on him. Most fired HCs don't get new a HC gig months later. Malzahn was an exception.
  8. Now I know we aren't comparing finishing first in the conference, a bowl win against BYU, a 10 win season despite playing Ole Miss and UCLA that both finished in the top 25, and a final AP poll ranking of 25 all in one season to a couple top 25 coaches poll votes, a beatdown of a 2 win SEC team, and zero conference championships. SL's first bowl game? Really? It was due to a high APR and a lack of bowl eligible teams. They made the bowl despite 5 wins. Back to the Arkansas beatdown, I'm much more impressed by Fuente coaching Memphis to a 13 point win against number 13 Ole Miss (finished 10th in the AP, it was a good team). Guess we can also throw in their 30+ point beatdown of Kansas since they're a P5 program. These are not the same. On to the next point of if he's so great, why is unemployed. Why wasn't Malzahn immediately snatched when he got fired? UCF sat for 3 months without a coach before deciding on him. Gary Patterson didn't get a HC gig after TCU. Tom Herman did great things and isn't a HC. It takes a minute for many of these guys to bounce back. Don't really see the problem with him spending a year at home but maybe that's just me.
  9. Why not? He got to Memphis their last year in CUSA, taking over a team with 5 wins in 3 seasons, oversaw the move to the AAC, and left the program in a much better spot than when he took over. He started what ended up being 7 straight seasons of 8+ wins. His 3rd season there, Memphis finished first in the conference and in the top 25 AP poll.
  10. Not Fresno St but MW related. Colorado state is up 79-46 on South Carolina. Hopefully Fresno State isn't as tough as their MW counterpart.
  11. And I'd argue from a general recruiting class standpoint, Auburn was consistently top 15, often top 10, until the past 2 years ago when they had back-to-back 6-win seasons. They were 8th nationally as recently as 2020. That's not why they started losing, IMO. Coaching is ever more important amongst the top teams where talent is mostly equal. He has a huge talent advantage at Jackson State that he wouldn't have in the SEC. That's where I'm not sold on him yet. If he had a SWAC roster, what would he be? Now for us, sure. I can see it being good as long as we can get top coordinators and position coaches which means we'd have to have the money to pay for a top coaching staff. He'd probably be fine here for the same reason he's winning in the SWAC. Just questioning if he's ready for the P5 world, especially the SEC.
  12. I think the point he's trying to make is Deion Sanders is beating FCS competition with FCS competition which isn't completely accurate. There's what? 30 FBS transfers at Jackson State and like you said, six 4 star and one 5 star guys from HS. He's not beating FCS teams with mostly FCS talent which to me, lestens his record a bit. Imagine a P5 going to CUSA but keeping the P5 recruiting. I'm sure that P5 would dominate similar to Jackson State in the SWAC. You can't coach size and speed. Jackson State outclasses their competition on that front.
  13. I'm sure Wren knows plenty more coaches around the country. One of the main reasons I'd like Fuente is his familiarity with the AAC and success he had at Memphis. I had to look it up because I was curious about what Memphis was before he got there. They won 5 total games combined in the 3 seasons before he got there. His 3rd season, Memphis won 10 games and 9 the following before being hired away. Memphis won 8+ games in the 4 years after he left. I'm not too familiar with their program but you can argue their recent success began with him and he recruited well enough for them to maintain that success. I'm not sold on Deion either but another poster made a good point the other day - how many quality coaches would want to work for Deion? If he could bring in an A+ coaching staff, he doesn't matter as much as the HC. As a football HC, his job is to surround himself with top-notch coordinators and position coaches. I think his name could attract some great coaches. The next question is could UNT pay enough to get those guys in Denton.
  14. Louisville lost by 1 to App State. Syracuse lost by 13 to Colgate. New Mexico is up by 21 against SMU with a minute and some change left to go. Upsets happen. Really though, my issue is I hoped we'd be more competitive these 2 first games. We weren't Wake Forest, TCU, or Syracuse to begin with. I was hoping we'd be more like Utah Valley, Colgate, or FAU but we're none of those either. As of right now, we're more like Rice and I hoped we'd be better. Part of my disappointment is Huntsberry. I think Huntsberry will be fine as the year goes on but I was thinking he'd be a bit better this early. That's probably on me, though.
  15. Wasn't necessarily directed at you. I've seen many express concern for Herman's arrogance yet so many around here were saying hiring Art Briles would be fine because people would forget about the rape situation when UNT was winning. Just strange.
  16. Wild that just a few years ago so many were requesting a Briles coach despite what happened at Baylor but now everybody is upset about Herman being arrogant. One is not like the other yet it appears some would rather have one who allegedly covered up rape allegations over one who's just a dick. Odd.
  17. Northwestern State beats #15 TCU on the road. Maine beats Boston College on the road. Yesterday, Texas Southern beat Arizona State and Southeast Louisiana beat Wyoming. Upsets happen, just not often for us.
  18. It's their parents', of whoever raises them and fills the parental role, job to teach that. Anybody else involved in developing kids, such as teachers and coaches, should also play a role. Sometimes, people just make bad decisions regardless of their upbringing. Somebody can have all the tools and yet still mess up. I wasn't trying to make an excuse or plave blame; simply wondering what happened to get him to this point.
  19. Torpedo HS recruiting from 105th in the country? Is that possible?
  20. I would be absolutely shocked if Memphis hired Deion considering he's the football version of Penny Hardaway. Since Memphis hired Hardaway and his 3 years basketball coaching experience, his name has brought two number 1 recruiting classes, a number 25 recruiting class, and a number 30 recruiting class. The result? Their best conference finish is 3rd, their March Madness ceiling has been the round of 32 (only once, same as us with McCasland), and a season win total high of 22. Coaching experience matters.
  21. Former player in custody. I don't know the circumstances but horrible for all. Not to make excuses for his alleged actions but some of these players really struggle mentally from all the head injuries. Wonder if that played a role here.
  22. If a guy with a 54-22 HC record, 5-0 bowl record, bowl win against Florida State 2 years after they win the natty at a NY6 bowl, who's never had a losing season, and just recently was the HC at Texas doesn't energize the fanbase then there's no fanbase to be energized. Herman does all the same things, albeit in different ways, with a much more accomplished coaching resume.
  23. Fuente and Herman are my 1a and 1b in no particular order. We don't need a young up and coming coach who may or may not figure it out or a guy who's been coaching for 5 years. Get me a guy who's done it at the AAC level before.
