  1. Can you blame them at this point? Our biggest win was a double OT thriller against Portland.

    This program is a joke.

No, wait, it's not. it's for real. We really are that bad.

I think our biggest win of the year was Northwood. Because, as some posters have said on here, "we would have lost that game last year."

  2. I'm hearing around me that since Texas is headless at the moment, Jerrod Heard is thinking of pulling his consideration there. Then, there's supposedly a bunch of Oregon scouts here tonight looking at his RB Breedlove and the murmurs are they might both go to Eugene.

With all due respect to Breedlove, don't believe that for a second. Breedlove isn't legitimately on Oregon's radar and they already have two 4-star running backs committed for this class. They could also be there to try and see if Roberson, the defensive end for Brennan, is worth trying to steal from Texas while Texas finds a new coach. Also Heard.

Plenty of scouts will be there all weekend for all the state championship games. Great opportunity for a lot of those kids.

  3. Fantastic point, and also why I am cautious any time we sign a kid from a program like Southlake or Allen. Those kids have already been in a college-level weight training program for 4+ years and have played for coaches good enough to squeeze every drop of production out of them. They are ready to plug and play, but they might not ever get any better than they are on the first day of freshman orientation.

Exactly. Kind of what you see is what you get with most big school DFW kids. There are exceptions, but it just kind of comes with coaches recognizing when their players are 9th and sometimes 8th graders who the future varsity guys are going to be. Then, as you said, they maximize that talent over their high school career.
  4. I have heard the same from several players and those close to the program. Almost word for word...

Sounds like if Brock can just learn to play within the offense then he will have a chance.

Flashiness impresses fans, but consistency impresses coaches. Gotta do the latter before you can do the former. Brock is my darkhorse because he has shown the ability in practice, just needs to stay healthy and put it all together in the spring.

  5. As most all know, we have just one team with a UNT commit(s) still playing in the state playoffs. Our receiving duo at Carthage takes on Kilgore tonight in the state championship game.

Carthage vs. Kilgore, noon Friday, December 20th, AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas

Carthage, led by our receiver commits Tee Goree and O'Keeron Rutherford takes on the 14-0 Kilgore bulldogs. Should be a great game. Feel free to post updates in here!

  6. Here's something not a lot of us have talked about...

This season we saw DT, Dajon, Brock and McNulty take snaps. Mini-Mac came in a few times as DT's backup. We threw Dajon in against Idaho at the end and tossed Brock in near the end after whoopin up on UTEP. At that point we were all hearing that DW had been hurt in practice and was trying to get a medical redshirt.

I can't remember, did McNulty go in during thr second half against Idaho? Or did we put Dajon in to replace Derek? I've seen too much football this season to remember.

Mcnulty came in against Idaho while DT was temporarily injured. He fumbled the first snap and threw an interception with his only throw. Then DT came back in.
  7. I'm sorry, in my book a will be soph who started 5 games at a juco and having to learn a new system does not put him that far ahead of a RS fresh who's been in the system and from all accounts was pushing for the starting job over a senior. And the weight argument is garbage. They aren't playing Offensive guard and they have different skill sets.

    Completely agree.

Also, I don't get the whole "Dajon is the future, but he might not be ready next year." If Greer is brought in to start then he will be both the short term and the long term. If he wins he will be our qb for the next 3 years and Dajon wouldn't be the starter until his redshirt senior year.

  8. That's the real dilemma. Anyone can find DT's in Texas, but finding those who can succeed in major college ball is another story all together. Not many fall through the recruiting net in this state.

Exactly. Waiting for the guys who fall through that recruiting net doesn't leave you with much. Especially with schools like Texas, as Harry mentioned in the football forum, now offering guys like Bryce English from DeSoto, a booger clone. 10, probably even 5 years ago they wouldn't give a sub 6' d-tackle a chance. Now they snatch them up early; sophomore year in English's case.
  9. I don't think we're talking about making a major commitment to another state when you are looking to cherry-pick a couple of recruits out of state. We picked up Andrew Power--a South Carolina boy at an Arizona juco, and we've picked up several key players in recent years from out-of-state jucos especially. We have a WR in this next class out of Oklahoma. And we still have some important players on our roster out of LA, including Mark Lewis and LaJaylin Smith, so "debacle" might be a strong word--I would go with "disappointment," though.

As far as Dickey goes, he would have been in a pretty good position in the Dodge years: "Look at how they've done since I've left." He can't really say that any more.

    Completely agree on all points.

I keep hearing two things. 1. Why aren't we getting any d-lineman with our head coach being a d-line guy? 2. We don't need to recruit outside Texas.

I agree that we don't have to recruit outside Texas much, but d-line is very hard to get good players who fall through the cracks. Running backs, backs, linebackers, receivers, even offensive linemen are really pretty much a dime a dozen in this state. D1 D-lineman, particularly d-tackles, are hard to find. With the Big 12 schools, A&M, LSU, and even Houston ahead of us right now they usually scoop up the good ones leaving us with not much left. That's why I think broadening our recruiting horizons, even if just to cherry pick a few guys (particularly d-tackles) could be beneficial to us. Memphis is just an example because there are good football players there and it isn't very far.

  10. Interesting -- I wouldn't rule anything out but given the debacle in Louisiana with Gaines my guess is they are pretty gun-shy about putting resources out of state. I would imagine that on any recruit we were up against Memphis on we might be facing Darrell Dickey. Not saying he would bad mouth us, but having bean a head coach here he would be in a unique position to battle against us with a recruit and family in his own backyard.

I agree. But we wouldn't need to put near the amount of resources we put into Louisiana.

And that is possible with Dickey, but Memphis is going after Prather and not Rasmussen.

I recommend watching Rassmussen's film before calling this not worth trying, even though it might be.

  11. I've said this on here for a while and I understand why it may not be a good idea, but I really think we should recruit Memphis. Not put a lot of resources into like we did in Louisiana, just go after a few guys from there. It's only about 7 and a half hours from Denton and we play a lot of teams that are less than 5 hours from Memphis (La Tech, USM, UAB, WKU, MUTS).

I don't mind us not going after Memphis kids, but the amount of Texas d-line prospects available are dwindling and that's what we need to spend our last two schollies on. Here are a couple of kids who I think we could get and would help. Also, Memphis kids have not seen the offseason and weight programs that Texas kids have seen, or the coaching so they have a lot of room for growth and development.

    1. Zach Rasmussen: 6'3" 270 lb defensive lineman. Had 19 tfls and 7 sacks this year. Very fast off the ball and easily has the size and frame to play d-tackle.

    2. James Prather: 6'4" 235 lb linebacker/d-end. Plays for probably the best team in Memphis and maybe all of Tennessee. Plays linebacker and moves well, but also plays end and has the frame to play d-end in college. Was defensive MVP of his region. Little harder competition for this guy.

Finish with a d-line class of Rasmussen and Prather or Xavier Washington and I'd be fine with no JUCOs at this point.

  12. Right - which tells us (barring unusual circumstances) that a spring available juco defensive lineman isn't going to happen in this class. Plan B? Look at the late qualifier pool (ie Sid Moore) and start thinking about the pool of juco defensive linemen who graduate in May. I don't know what other options you have at this point. I think they are sitting on 2-3 spots and waiting to see what comes available. The good news is most of the big boys are done.

As for the big boys being mostly done, hate to qualify them as a big boy because they may or may not be but they are above us on the totem pole right now, but Houston is who we need to pay attention to.

Houston has one defensive tackle committed. They are after basically all of the d-tackle guys that we are after. JT Williams, Aaron Jenkins, and Darrius Montgomery. They won't take them all, and hopefully we aren't left taking their leftovers, but getting whoever they don't get would be better than getting no one.

  13. Looks like the list of these guys that we could get is shrinking. Jerard Carter is committed to Houston, Marcus Smith is Texas Tech bound, and Martial signed with Idaho.

Not to mention both Williams boys are out of reach, and Hafoka Olie seems to be as well. We have tough competition for both Montgomery and Jenkins but these are the recruiting battles we need to start winning.

At defensive end, landing Xavier Washington would be huge. He'll have a chance to play immediately, but schools like Nevada are after him hard. Another potential guy was Snow Junior College defensive end Tre James, but he signed with Toledo today. And East Mississippi JUCO defensive end Jimmie Gipson, who reportedly had an offer out from us, signed with South Alabama today. Seems like it might have to be Xavier Washington or bust here.

JUCO might be out of the question after today's mid-term enrollee signing day. Maybe we find one, but he wouldn't be here until fall camp. Still along way until February 5th, but we need to put the full court press on guys like Xavier Washington and Aaron Jenkins.

  14. Here's my guess. About this time of the year or in January, you see a couple of big league guys who fell off the radar and then all of a sudden have landed a test score or improved their academic lot enough to be back on the market. If I was UNT, I would keep at least a couple of spots open for this type of situation.

I would also want to add another Juco tackle with size who could play in the spring. The problem is so does everybody else!

I think you have to place some faith in Mac and the staff here. We all thought the D-line was going to be average at best last season and it turned out to be a real strength.

I'm not going to lie though -- there is nothing out there in terms of a defensive linemen that we appear to be closing in on. So if they are on one it is major stealth.

Signing day was today for guys who wish to be eligible in the spring.
