Who is your sleeper player on the 2023 UNT roster?
BillySee58 replied to Jonnyeagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I am going with Tight End Josh Smith. Think he’s going to be a dude who just gets open and picks up first downs. -
Yeah d-line is the biggest need in this class imo. Also hoping for some O-line guys to develop behind the current crop that is primarily juniors, and LB as we don’t really know what we have behind Brown and Wood who are both upperclassmen. Looking more for quality over quantity at LB. Get a QB, 3-4 d-linemen/edge, 2-3 o-linemen, and 1-2 LBs.

Yup. We have one receiver on our roster over 6’ tall and that’s 6’1” Trey Cleveland who will be a senior when these kids get on campus.

Why do we care about Commits in the age of NIL & the Portal?
BillySee58 replied to TripleGrad's topic in Mean Green Football
Eric Morris has landed 22 High School commits at North Texas since being hired. Of those 22 commits, 2 have decommitted. It’s easy to draw attention to the decommits and transfers and act like it’s all because of NIL or Transfer Portal, but it seems like most UNT fans ignore the context of the coaching change or guys getting an extra COVID year. Before the coaching change, in 2022 we returned 16 of the 19 (including K and P) of our starters who were eligible to return from 2021. 1 of the guys we lost was a guy who played 5 years for us, and the other 2 were the Murphy twins. Guys generally stay. If we start losing a ton of guys who actually committed under Morris, or start losing a bunch of starters who Morris brought in, then there would be more validity in the concern. -
Eh. He’s a 5’5” receiver. Don’t need him to beef up. Get open and make people miss.
-
Truly amazing film. If he’s 3-4 inches taller he’s getting offered by everyone. Fortunately even at his height he is going to be able to get open and make dudes miss just fine.

I say it is reason for excitement. Sure gives you a better shot at signing the kid than if they commit somewhere else. Also, building recruiting momentum helps. Other recruits take notice. And as JayD said, signing a big recruit doesn’t guarantee you’re going to keep them past a season anyways. But if the coaches build the right culture you have a much better shot at keeping your guys, especially when there is no coaching change. Same thing applies to commits.

He has pulled 3 of the 6 highest composite rated HS recruits in the school’s history in the 20+ years that those ratings go back. We brought in P5 transfers who actually had starts/legit stats under their belt which Littrell was not doing and G5 transfers who actually were full-year starters, not just part-time. I agree under his first full cycle things haven’t felt much different than what Littrell was putting together this time of year. But I think there has been a step up. Particularly with recruiting at the top HS programs and transfer portal.

Not seeing Ethan Miner either. Hopefully it is something similar with him at Arkansas State. https://meangreensports.com/sports/football/roster/ethan-miner/6072

I’m thinking that’s not using the 🧩 as a commitment announcement but as more of just a symbol of our recruiting operations -
'24 IOL Offer: Ronnell McClain; DeSoto: No Composite Rating
BillySee58 replied to UNTLifer's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
And that’s why it’s good to get the guys who already have some P5 offers before they commit to you. Obviously it’s impressive beating them out, but it’s also helpful when P5 start sniffing around again later. They’ve already proven the allure of a P5 alone isn’t enough. The guys who commit with no other P5 offers are the ones I worry about more. -
'24 IOL Offer: Ronnell McClain; DeSoto: No Composite Rating
BillySee58 replied to UNTLifer's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Depends how much leverage you have. Is it a marginal recruit or a dude you really don’t want to lose? Coaches are definitely in the right to keep recruiting that spot/position when that happens. There is risk from both sides and they each get to choose how much risk they want to take. But there’s much more risk in waiting until signing day when you’ve had a chance to evaluate all your options. Recruits know they can’t do that unless they are a top 200 or so guy so they’re going to play the game and take their spots while they have them. -

Because some classes of the schools that offer them are filled before these kids senior years have started. That’s the game the colleges have created. They recruited kids earlier and earlier every year and forced players’ hands. Commit early or risk losing your spot. -
10 years ago he was getting a thread in our recruiting forum. Now he’s a 6-year NFL pro.

6’5” wing from Midwest City, OK who played 20-21 & 21-22 at Oklahoma State, then last season at TCU. Played 89 games with 20 starts over the past three seasons. Should have 2 years of eligibility left with 20-21 not counting due to the COVID eligibility freeze. Best season was as a true freshman in 20-21 at Oklahoma State when he averaged 7.8 points per game. Unsure if he would have to sit out or not, as he already used his sit-out-free transfer last season. I believe it depends on if he is a grad transfer or not. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/4433163/rondel-walker

Austin Aune- Atlanta Falcons Camp Invite

If any QB of ours can stick in the NFL, it’s gotta be our single-season leader in TD passes. Good luck, Austin!- 82 replies
