  1.

We often talk about the millions and millions of dollars that are made in college athletics, especially college football. More often than not it's a case of the rich getting richer. Generally speaking it's the Power Five universities who see the largest gains in revenue. But there is one spot where members of the G5 conferences have found a niche, non-conference guaranteed games.

    A Million Good Reasons

Over the past decade, as strength of schedule has become such an important factor. Determining not only who plays for the national championship, and who gets to a major bowl. This has caused a shift in college football scheduling. Power five programs need to schedule tough, yet almost guarantee a victory.

To accomplish this, major programs have started to schedule the top tier programs from the AAC, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt. While it's not new for big time programs to buy a win by scheduling a "cupcake", what is new is the amount of money it is now costing to schedule a G5 opponent.

Just last week it was announced that Arkansas State, who has won or shared the Sun Belt crown three times in the last four years, will receive $1.65 million to play at Nebraska in 2017. That's just one example of how the cost of scheduling is on the rise.

As Miami (OH) Athletic Director David Sayler told Fox Sports Wisconsin, he won't think about scheduling a major P5 program unless they are willing to guarantee the RedHawks at least a million dollar pay day. In 2014, Sayler's Miami (OH) program was paid $1.1 million to take a trip to play Michigan in the Big House.

    The Cost Of Increased Demand

While the cost of buying a home game has risen across the country, the Big Ten seems to be shelling out the most, but why?

In early 2013, the Big Ten made a decision to stop scheduling FCS opponents. Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez introduced this new system, designed to raise the Big Ten's strength of scheduling, ideally giving the Big Ten a better shot of sending a participant to the College Football Playoff. Limiting Big Ten schools to FBS opponents only, has worked out great for the conference and even better for fans, but there has been one unintended consequence. Supply and demand.

As the demand to play the toughest schedule possible has risen, G5 programs have taken advantage. In the Big Ten's case, without being able to schedule FCS opponents, members are left with a pool of 64 G5 opponents to fill the schedule. With the self-imposed elimination of FCS opponents, the Big Ten has given financial leverage to the smaller leagues.

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, the opening week of the 2014 season saw away teams haul in $12.9 million in guarantees. The Big Ten had six of the top ten payouts, with Michigan and Nebraska leading the way. Both the Wolverines and Huskers paid their opening week opponents a cool One million dollars. Michigan alone paid a whopping $3.1 million for its non-conference home games in 2014.

The $1.65 million that Nebraska will pay to Arkansas State covers a onetime trip for the Red Wolves. Conversely, G5 members have started taking less than a million dollar guarantee if the major conference school agrees to make a return trip sometime in the future.

Most often the big program will get two guaranteed home games, and in return make one trip to the home of the G5 university they have entered into the agreement with.

These two scenarios are win-wins for smaller conference universities. Either they get paid big bucks to make one trip or they get the opportunity to sell the fan base on having a big time program make a once in a lifetime trip to your home stadium.

  2. RV was brand new to the job and did actually hire JJ.  I was at the press conference when Coach Jones was hired.  I think there were about a fifteen people there including Emmitt and myself.  RV even came over and talked to us.  I think we were the only non DRC or Athletic Department employees there.

Allow me to paint a plausible scenario, especially since JJ is RV's only decent hire on his record.

When NT hired RV, he had been an admin in the Southern Miss AD. Isn't it possible that Louisiana native and former Memphis interim head coach, Johnny Jones name came out during that time as a possible future candidate at Southern Miss as James Green continued to hover around .500, but then Southern Miss actually made the NIT in 2001 and so James Green bought himself some more time. RV gets the job at North Texas, needs to hire a new coach, and knew that a more competent AD had been thinking about Alabama assistant, Johnny Jones. RV then hires Johnny Jones and for the next 15 years, some Mean Green fans hold the hire up as a shining beacon for ol' Rick when in actuality sneaky sneaky Ricky actually didn't even have the original idea to hire JJ. Isn't it possible? Especially when one considers all of his other major hires

  3. Didnt realize he was so close to 2K? Is that club for rushing and receiving (total yards) or just rushing? Seems like most of his touchdowns and yardage came from catching the ball? Still, JJ is a great talent and good team player for the Mean Green. Not sure what his future holds, but he would make a very good RB coach.

    GMG!!!

Just rushing. He currently sits at 1,799 yards rushing.

To be fair, he's danced 90% of the time since he got here. I don't think that can explain his complete disappearance in the last 4 games, which is what the OP was wondering, unless the staff decided "4.5 years is enough! No more soup for you". I guess what I'm saying is: the dancing is not a new development and can't be the only reason that the Jimmy Show was scrubbed.

For anyone interested, here's a link to his stats:

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/515139/antoinne-jimmerson

In the fall of 2011, most of us would've been over the moon if Johnathan Gray had committed to North Texas. It's interesting when comparing the numbers of Jimmerson and Gray how similar their college career arc is. In fact, Jimmerson actually averages .03 ypc more than Gray does. The fate of Gray just goes to show what injuries, dancing, and finding yourself in the wrong situation can do to one's potential NFL prospects.

    Jimmerson career stats:

    393 carries; 1,799 yards; 18 TDs

    30 catches; 376 yard; 5 TDs (12 catches; 205 yards; 3 TD's in his RS freshman year - 2012)

  4. Only has 5 rushing yards in the last 4 games. With a losing season confirmed, there has been a warranted youth movement, but I feel for this young man who has put a lot into this program for 5 years to just completely get shut down. Before the season started, I thought he was a shoe-in to join the 2,000-yard career club; however, with only 4 games remaining and 201 yards to go, I have my doubts. I'd love for us to keep that DeSoto pipeline open, ya know?

Has he been injured or something else? Or is this just a case of going a different way?

  5. I'm putting all of you on the honor system here.  No fair googling or looking up stuff......

    Where is Bethune-Cookman ?

Extra points if you can name their colors and mascot.  Again, no fair looking.

School is somewhere in Florida, I think. They have regularly been the FCS cupcake for FSU, Miami, Florida, the F_U twins, etc so that's what I'm basing this on. Could be way off..

School colors are Maroon and Yellow like the Fairfield Eagles. Mascot is the Tigers? maybe Bobcats (for alliteration)?

FBSchedules used to have us playing Liberty in 2016, Lamar 2017, Incarnate Word 2018, Abilene Christian 2019. I think Brett published that info in the early spring after we discussed the presence of the future schedules existence with Ryan Munthe on a thread here.

  6. RV is going to have a pretty nice retirement package from the state of Texas. Maybe hitting 15 years in April will spring some next level bonuses that we don't know about?

I meant to post this earlier: Bill Byrne was willing to go down with his coach, Mike Sherman, because he didn't agree with the decision to let him go. RV, on the other hand, has shown a penchant for throwing others in front of the bus if he believes it will save his own skin. Is that really the type of leader you'd like to have?

I have spoken to dozens of former athletes over the last decade and most will tell you what they think of RV...and for the most part it ain't glowing. I had secretly been holding out hope for several years now that a successful businessman like fly would one day realize he was being hoodwinked, but his recent posts have convinced me that this necessary move of relieving RV will not be done by the big money donors.

  7. RV's arrogance is allowing him to destroy the very foundation of all the good things he accomplished. He didn't hang it up and ride off into the sunset when he should've; he stayed in the saddle too long...and our athletic department is getting passed by. If he actually cared about UNT, he would do the right thing and let us hire some new blood.

I like Cumbie, but someone made a good point. Apparently TCU people don't think too fondly of RV, and he didn't help his reputation after the handling of the Mccarney firing. I don't know that the TCU guys wouldn't take the job here, but that is a factor to consider and it probably doesn't help.

Im still pushing for my boy Smiley. I can't guarantee he'd make the big jump successfully (none of these guys are even close to sure things), but I know recruiting would be incredibly fun to follow and he'd get some really good players in here. He'd also make sure our special teams are good, and we'd put up points.

Since Smiley is a Baylor grad, I am now on board the Smiley train - #TeamSmiley. I wrote a post last year scratching at the surface of North Texas' coaching history; I came to the conclusion that our next hire needs to be either a North Texas or Baylor alum. You can read that post here

  9. Let's make it a contest to see which O'fer coach get's canned first:

    1. O'Leary - UCF  0-5 Like NTXCoog mentioned, he's gone at the end of the year.

    2. Martin - NMSU 0-4 In his 3rd year. NMSU hired an energetic AD, who graduated from NMSU, at the beginning of this year. There's a chance that he lets Martin go and is allowed to make his own hire. NMSU appears to have a better AD than us.

    3. Bohl - Wyoming 0-5 Only in his 2nd year at Wyoming, and based solely on his success at NDSU, I expect him to get at least 2 more years

    4. McCarney - UNT 0-4 Has 3.5 years remaining on his contract; I don't think we've ever fired a coach with that much left.  Let's get RV out of here first and let the new AD bring in the next football HC.

    5. Beaty - KU   0-4 First year coach. Least likely to be canned.

I think your order is pretty much right. I think I'd rank em in order of getting fired, from most likely to least likely as:

    O'Leary

    Martin

    McCarney

    Bohl

    Beaty
