That is not going to command the 25+ million per school that the schools are used to. You can’t replace those schools

Those schools are also going to have to compensate the ACC to the tune of around $1b if they have any intentions of breaking the Grant of Rights.  Contracts have consequences.

That's why despite all their whining last year guess what?  FSU and Clemson are still members of the ACC.  The absolute earliest that any school is leaving is 2030.  Who knows what happens between now and then?

Smut deserves NO kudos for trying to cheat and buy their way upward, all throughout their history.   All schools except them earn a Conference invite, not Smut.  The Big12 certainly didn't want them, numerous times, even with all their $$.

Big 12 didn't "want" SMU b/c we represent an existential threat to schools like TCU, Houston, Baylor, Tech, and OK State.

What recruit in their right mind would choose to live in those truck stop wastelands if they can go play in Dallas at the Power 4 level?

Not that I'm not jealous, because getting in to the ACC is a VERY big deal, and SMU deserves kudos for that, but do you believe the donors footing the bill for this move will be happy with their investment if you wind up being the Vanderbilt of the ACC?

The roster TODAY has more talent than half of the ACC.

How do you think being able to recruit and use NIL with the ACC patch is going to go?

Mac Engel is a douchebag, but he is right about this. It's not like it isn't obvious.

What has always been the saddest part if the entire SMU-North Texas history is that SMU only plays us when it helps them, while we act like its the most awesomest thing ever to play them. We pack their stadium, we get all fired up, and we completely panic our players and coaches the moment they fall behind when playing them, which leads to the eventual ass-kicking we receive. SMU, who brings a few dozen people to Denton in a good year, benefits amazingly, when we bring THOUSANDS of people to Ford Field each time we play there.

I've always hated playing them and I wish our fans understood the awful effects that getting drilled by them almost every time we play has caused. But we won't do that--we will cry and gripe for years when SMU drops us from the OOC schedule, even though it will be the very best thing that we could have happen. Let them go their way and enjoy never playing anyone from Texas going forward. Let their oil money pay more for this ACC project, which will be really fun to see when oil eventually drops back to its $30 a barrel level again in the years ahead.

Oil isn't dropping to $30/bbl bro.  lol.

Jesus. Why do you charge so much for the same classes then? Greedy much? Thought Jesus had some things to say about that. Imagine how little percentage of that could feed and shelter the homeless at 75 & Mockingbird.

You charge what the market will pay.  Applications are up 3x in the past five years and average ACT/SAT are the best of any school in the state exclusive of Rice.  So the supply for a very limited number of new students is being more than met by demand.  Simple economics.

I don’t get it either. ESPN had an article about them and they referred To SMU “returning to their glory days” and then immediately talk about those glory days being the early 80’s. And what always amazed me is the SMU people that also refer to 1982 with such warm memories. It completely destroyed their program and should be a shameful, embarrassing  time in their history. But they’re actually proud of it.

Ironically, imbedded in the ESPN story was a link to “Pony Excess”.

    mind boggling…..

Nothing remotely shameful about it.  Everyone in the SWC was doing what SMU did in the 80's but without the protection of being a true blue blood we were crucified.

Now with NIL and the commitment of hundreds of millions from billionaire boosters there is no reason we can't regain status as a consistent Top 20 program.

Y'all are going to need "winnable" games to get to bowl eligibility and I think your AD loves that we help fill up your stadium. I don't think SMU would be against playing UNT in OOC. But like others have said, the series was cancelled when we joined the AAC and we don't have any OOC openings until 2030. This year's game will be the last for a long time.

We already have a better NIL and transfer portal class than most of the ACC including Wake, Duke, BC, Syracuse, NC State, and UVA.

I do not think we'll keep UNT on the schedule but I wouldn't mind it.  Easy travel and fun for the region.

Interesting take from The Monty Show.

As unhappy as they are in the AAC, their best option would probably be to go independent and show the world what they really can do on their own.

This is beyond stupid.  Where would SMU park its other sports?  The American certainly isn't going to let SMU walk away from football and let everything else stay in the conference.  Not to mention scheduling would be an absolute nightmare.

Independence is not and never was an option.

Where did you read this, or is this your own personal certainty?

I'm of the opinion that this is really about the P2...and everyone else.  If I'm in the SEC or B10 at that point and I have to vote for a few incoming schools, I don't really care whether your ACC or AAC. I want to know if you bring something of value.  Money will be an issue, and history won't be ignored, but I know that whoever I choose is going to reap the rewards of our P2 contracts.

So, I want to look at all options, and see who has been investing in their programs, who has a market of interest, and do you have a respected brand.  Etc, I'm sure you've thought of all this.  What I don't agree with is this imaginary cutoff point afer the ACC you are suggesting.

IMO, it's not out of the question - be it UNT or whomever - that a program that has a 5-10 year history of winning, with a passionate fanbase, and a committed administration, get's strong consideration over a perrenial bottom-dweller in the ACC or BXII.

The odds of the AAC (or any G5 conference for that matter) having access to the playoff in the very near future is virtually zero.

Why doesn't FSU say "ok we'll let SMU in....they just have to pay each school $10 mil per year for the next 5 years to join." SMU has shown they'll do whatever it takes. Seems like easy money. Take advantage of their desperation.

And like others, I call BS on the "donors have pledged 100s of millions of dollars." Why would someone flush money down the toilet like that. The ACC won't be around in a few years. SMU will never see  year 7 of their non revenue ACC membership. Clemson, FSU, etc will be on to the 30-40 team big college football association. SMU will be right back where they are now. I mean I get, "nothing to lose, try it." But really rich people generally invest their money into sure things. This is the furthest thing from it...

The ACC Grant of Rights runs through 2036.  Remember everyone who said the Big 12 was DOA after Texas/OU left?  Guess what?  They expanded and survived.  Same thing will happen with the ACC.

And you can call BS on the $100m all you want.  Matters not if you believe it 🙂

So you like flashing the names of Miller and Clark on a public forum. I’m sure they are grateful to you for sharing  with everyone on GMG about their phenomenal fortunes.

Listen friend. How much money do you give each year to the smu athletic fund? You sure like bragging about others and their wealth.

Also, unlike some on this board I am able to see right thru your patronizing, condescending and insincere remark about keeping UNT on the smu schedule.

Run on now. You’ve peed in your pants.

NIL I'm in for $300/month.  Not a mega donor by any means.

Season tickets for football and basketball for the last 15 years.  Stopped donating to the Mustang Club when NIL became a thing.
