  1. Of the teams we play every year, which team disgust you the most to lose to? For me it's a toss up between SMU and UTSA.
  2. The city practically gives them the Alamodome. UTSA is pretty much all they have for the dome. For UTSA there's no incentive to buy a cow when they are basically being given the milk though 2035. I seriously doubt UTSA would even be FBS today if they had been forced to build their own stadium.
  3. Totally different. Wilson is young (43) and can flat out recruit. Littrell is only 39. If he can recruit, he can win. An interesting bet would be who gets hired away first. Littrell or Wilson?
  4. All true. The fact that they play in a 64,000 seat indoor facility has helped them tremendously with both scheduling and recruiting. They faced no burden to build a stadium. Why should they buy a cow when the milk is practically given to them? Without the Alamodome, their football program would have had a much harder time getting off the ground.
  5. It's always scary when we are the only FBS school to offer. Big question marks. UTSA leads CUSA for now with 14 commits averaging 5.5 offers from other schools. (most are FBS) (no JUCOs) At the moment, we're 5th in CUSA, but 11th of the 12 Texas FBS schools. Recruiting has always been our Achilles heel.
  6. From the recruiting side, it matters more about coaching changes than what happened 8 or 10 years ago. According to 247 recruiting: Texas State hired Everett Withers last year and their national recruiting rank went from 110 in 2016 to 92 this year. They beat us out of the only 3 star recruit we both made offers to this year. UTSA hired Wilson last year and they went from 103 in 2016 to 75 nationally in 2017. They beat us out of all three 3 star recruits we both made offers to this year. UNT hired Littrell last year and we went from from 102 in 2016 to 116 in 2017. However, I really think he recruited better than the rankings they gave it.
  7. I think your right. Littrell's contract was extended, but it looks like Rice and UTSA stood pat. What is a little concerning is this: http://247sports.com/Season/2017-Football/CompositeTeamRankings?Conference=C-USA However, Littrell seems to have a pretty good eye for talent.
  8. The base was $650,000 but with bonuses, etc. it pushed it up to the $835,000 range. Whatever they pay him, they are going have a hard time trying to keep him. However if he continues recruiting like he has so far, he will leave them in pretty good shape. For any college football program, good recruiting = continuity. A coach who has one good season but then doesn't recruit well = disaster for the program.
  9. It goes to show you that just being Lucky will only get you so far in life.
  10. In 2016, Wilson at $835,000 was the 2nd highest paid coach in CUSA. David Baliff at Rice was 1st at $903,556. They picked Wilson over some other coaches with head coaching experience. They also put in a $2.9 million buy out clause. We keep being dismissive, but they are serious down there.
  11. "Desperate"??? Their AD did his research and made a heck of a call. They won 6 games his first season with a 3 point bowl loss. Wilson at LSU was the 2011 Recruiter of the Year by Rivals. In 2014 he was named the top recruiter in all of college football by NFL.com. He recruited 17 three star players this year to UTSA and is on a hot pace for next year. If UNT doesn't get "desperate" and win some of the games with them soon, then any talk of a rivalry will end like a bad joke.
  12. If the kicking experiences some necessary roughness, Kathy Ireland does have 3 kids.
  13. If UTSA weren't in the 7th largest U S city, and if that city wasn't without a pro team, and if they hadn't hired Frank Wilson who signed 17 three star players this year to go along with 20 from the previous 2 years, then I wouldn't fear what will happen to my alma mater in this non rivalry over the next few years. I've painfully watched NTSU / UNT for about half of the passed 100 years repeatedly tie its own shoe laces together. UTSA decided to skip all that and use velcro. I truly hope we win every game against UTSA, but damn if they haven't made all the right moves in their short history.
  14. Top 10 reasons UTSA is not a rival 1. They aren't rivals because we already beat them once. 2. They may have beat us 3 out of 4 ........but we don't care because they are not really a rival. 3. They're in our division, but so what. 4. We would rather beat any of the other teams on our schedule more. 5. Saying we are rivals would be like saying we compete for the same recruits. 6. No trophy........no rivalry. 7. If we don't mention they're on the schedule maybe no one will notice. 8. Other sports writers may heap praise on them, but we have Bret Vito to "brag" on us. 9. As Groucho Marx said, I don't want to belong to any group that would have me as a member. 10. UTSA has the San Antonio River walk and we have De Nile.
  15. Simple fact: "Fans" who stay on the hill are not there for the football. Better product, etc. doesn't really apply in their case.
  16. I didn't realize UTSA has 17 3 star recruits last year (according to 247 sports). I knew Frank Wilson was a truly great recruiter,,,,,,,,,,,,,but 17 3 star recruits......Yikes!
  17. Bolt an I 35 sign onto an under construction sign and stick it in a bucket of cement. The rivalry, like the road that connects us, is a work in progress. That said, the won-loss record needs to be evened up before any kind of trophy is created.
  18. Agree 100% Look at the number of first year players that contributed last year, even with Bryce English, Nic Smith, and other RS not on the field. Last year may turn out to be a really good class. The 2017 class addresses the biggest needs. Keep the QB upright and get him some open receivers. Trust Littrell until he proves otherwise.
  19. The real question is whither or not this class makes a 5-8 team better. I think it does. Littrell's first class looks pretty good after one year, even though Bryce English, Nic Smith, and other RS sat out the year. The influx of receivers and O linemen should help a more experienced Qb move the ball. You have trust/hope that Littrell has found good players that others overlooked, just like he did last year.
  20. I've been to Idaho and it's great in the summertime. Winter is another deal. Even after all Boise's success, you can count all their 4 star recruits for the last 3 decades on one hand. It should be easier to recruit to Denton than Boise.
  21. After watching Aaron Rodgers pick apart the Cowboys, I looked up his history. He received no scholarship offers coming out of high school and went to Butte Community College. If you can fill your recruiting class with 4 and 5 star players, there is little doubt that success will follow. Boise managed to build a powerhouse by finding overlooked talent. How hard was it to recruit to Idaho??? Littrell and company must find overlooked talent until UNT has a couple of breakout years.
  22. Mason Fine has answered any questions on toughness. He leads the NCAA for being sacked with a total of 34 times and counting. More protection .............please!!!
  23. INT SACKS FUMBLES RECOVERED UNT 10 for 165 yards and 2 TDs 15 5 UTSA 2 for 14 yards and no TDs 10 7 For sure UNT has been more opportunistic on defense than UTSA. Turnovers could be the key.
