Exactly.  There’s a misconception out there that it’s pay to play.  It’s not, they have to “earn” their money through public appearances, autographs, social media promotions, etc with their NIL partners.

I'm not sensitive to downvotes but just curious as to why those of you who did would disagree?  My assumption is the much rightful cynicism of if that concept is actually being applied, which I would completely understand.

I did speak to our NIL contact and that's how he described it to me, for whatever that is worth.  With us, at least, it's done through a third party group and they do actually regulate that the pay is fair.  I'm not sure what kind of work these supposed $1M guys are doing that actually earns that - obviously there's no way an appearance for autographs demands that kind of income.

My understanding is that for them to be NCAA compliant, athletic performance, including where you may end up on the depth chart, cannot be a stipulation of the contract. If you are on the team in good standing and meet your NIL “obligation” (public appearances, ads, or whatever) you get your money.

  3. You guys are talking sense.  This a tough league and that’s what we wanted. We are sitting here with an opportunity that we wanted and now we have to rise.  It’s kind of like we got a promotion to a better job and we’ve been working our way through it and now it’s time to just say we are gonna get it done.

We are finally healthy again, I know depth is a problem, but it’s not impossible to win it.  But I don’t look at this season as a disappointment.  There’s been a lot to work through.  Do I look at it as a success? No.  But seeing through clear eyes it’s also not a disappointment.  The way these guys fight and the way they play and dig so deep and care…they really REALLY care.  Damn do these dudes care.  And I want to pause here in this thought for a minute because that has become so very rare for kids to really care.   Players don’t have this much heart very often anymore.  Aaron Scott is on my mind as I type this.  He is a fighter.  I know he goes too far sometimes but he is a total fighter. I guess my point is.. THIS IS OUR PERSONALITY as a fanbase and I’m so glad we have a team that reflects it.  Dig deep, fight for every inch.

The close losses have sucked so much and we gotta fix that and there’s no other way about it.  BUT I am so proud of these guys.  They represent who we are so well.  This is the sports I’ve wanted for so long.

  4. It’s been such a frustrating year record wise and I know we’ve had injuries too.  But our team is so tough and I’m so proud of these guys.  This is what it’s like to be in a good basketball conference and we just gotta keep goin and growin.  Hope nobody is ready to fall off the wagon.  Apart from still having the conference tournament ahead of us, we can’t do the thing we do sometimes where we give up.  Don’t let go of the rope!

  5. The way this conversation is going makes me really happy bc our expectation every year is making and progressing through the tournament.  That’s still really hard to to and this UAB team has been climbing this climb with us neck and neck the whole way.  It’s ok to lose a game to a good team.  It’s better to win them and we shouldn’t lost to many.  I just don’t want our fanbase to lose hope bc we are a damn good team.

I mean after the SMU game the attendance was very poor, so what's there really left to kill? It's also confusing how every game wasn't promoted like the SMU game was.

I really do think it’s just that it’s a week night.  Not a firm answer and I’m riddled with sick children and everyone I know has been sick so that may be why I’m excusing it. But I agree, I was disappointed in the crowd.  Which was kinda why I was disappointed in the Crean takes on the board bc he was still absolutely bringing the energy but I understand the take.

It was obviously too much for them to even show up tonight.

I guess I gave a little credit that it was a midweek game but I also don’t disagree with you.  Just sayin I’m trying to baby the tentative along if they’re not buying still.

Edwards makes things more difficult than they have to be at times

I’m not saying I disagree but guys have to get experience to learn.  Tylor and Hamlet both just almost felt immediately  automatic. Sometimes it takes some L’s to get it straight.  He’s a brave player and we need that kind of leadership.  I will say though. Aaron Scott seems to be to be just the most experienced and solid shot maker other than Rubin that we have and I’d love to see him get more opportunities it’s just that Edwards is a ball handler and so quick so it’s just gonna make more sense for it to be him to be the leader that we have gotten used to in the type of guys we’ve had. And I know that he can handle it.  This is just a tough league and we can do better but we have solid guys and need to get healthier and we need to mature a little.

  9. That sucks.  I hope it doesn’t kill the fanbase like these things usually do.  Dig deep and have grit!  We are still a great, tough team!  Man, UAB is a tough opponent.  Big time respect.  The second half change in officiating was frustrating but we made enough mistakes to just accept that we lost.  We  went cold and we also got softer on defense which i know we can blame on refs but you can play legal defense well.  I’m pissed but we are still good, don’t let it stop this momentum!

It’s not the kids fault they’re handed a roll of bounty instead of being given proper floor mops

It’s been that way forever.  I don’t understand that bullshit.  I’m donating like 8 floor mops TOMORROW!.

His observations are solid…he’s just a bit too much. It kinda sounds like he’s ripping lines at the broadcast table.

bc I mean, c’mon…this guy clearly loves coke.

Hahaha I can’t disagree with that take at all.

  12. On the Crean thing, I’ve actually loved his commentary.  He’s been pretty fair and yea he sounds more like he’s coaching than broadcasting but it’s kind of nice.  Really good observer and he (for the most part) clearly knows a lot about our guys and their tendencies which is a compliment.  Fun fact I’m sure plenty already know but he’s married to the Harbaugh brothers’ sister.

They are, but it's both ways at least. I feel like the chirping between Scott and UAB's guy have forced the refs to blow some soft fouls to take control a bit.

I’ve noticed in the American that they really allow plenty of pressure physicality early and tighten up late.

For sure. Should have been a 10 point win but considering what they battled through this game, it's an incredible win. My Mavs would do well to watch North Texas to get a lesson on mental fortitude and fighting as a team.

I haven’t looked at the stats relative to other schools over the course of the last six or seven years, but missing free throws has been such a shocking frustration for an otherwise comepletely discipline team.  My expectations from the strip always seem too high I guess but we would really do well to build a better culture around FTs.  I do know we’ve been solid at times but we can be better.
