  1. She's getting only a $1 million raise? That actually seems low for the Texas job . I feel bad for you guys, but Karen deserves to be hired there. The "lack of fan support" argument is very familiar to me. After our WNIT win against Florida, who is coached by a former 49er coach, Karen said during her post game interview that "now, maybe the local paper will write about us". (There was an article about Florida coach Butler the day of the game) BTW, I don't think Angela Ortega is cut out to be a head coach and she most likely will get a chance to go with Karen. How far from Benton, Ark is Austin? Did Karen's parents actually come to games in Denton? Good luck in your search.
  2. There is no place similar to UNC-CHeat and you can be sure they won't share their secrets.
  3. A mouthy mom and the Uh Huh guy, too? Don't let that discourage you from future women's games. Neither one of those people will be there next time.
  4. Charlotte fan who had business in Texas and was supposed to be at last night's game. He usually brings a bunch of signs and acts the fool in a very loud voice. Pretty sure he was at ya'lls game since I caught the tail end of KNTU's broadcast on the internet and the announcers were saying "uh huh" and laughing for no apparent reason. Guy's a favorite of kids-adults not so much.
  5. Did the "UH HUH" guy get your attention? If not, he'll be disappointed, uh huh.
  6. Needless to say, I was at that game. Attendance was not as good as it should have been, but I think that 662 number is not accurate at all. Local media does all it can to ignore us here, thus the fan base is not good. Karen was frustrated even before the game was played by the fact that the Charlotte Observer ran a story on Amanda Butler's return to Charlotte. (Amanda was hired by Florida after coaching here). After the game her comment was "Maybe, they will have a story on us tomorrow". Ya'll turn out and watch Karen's team when possible. She certainly deserves to see her work showcased.
  7. The school was founded in 1946 as a night school and extension of UNC Chapel Hill for returning WW II veterans. The original nickname was "owls". In 1949, the school, than called Charlotte College, survived a near closing. Thus the 49er nickname. Charlotte College became a part of the UNC system in early to mid 60's and the name became UNCC. WE now go by UNC Charlotte and ,for athletics, simply "Charlotte" We did indeed used to use the UT Austin fight song, which I assume is not the same as yours. This has not been done for a very long time. We also were, for a short time in the 70's known as the Mean Green, and frankly I miss being called that. The city of Charlotte is named for a British Queen. Oh, and our chancellor is totally opposed to changing our name to University of Charlotte, while many of us want to distance ourselves from that Baby Blue university over in Chapel Hill which we now refer to as UNC-CHeat.
  8. Ha Ha. I gather from this that ya'll have a scumbag Chancellor. We have more in common than green.
  9. Wrong on everything. Thanks for playing and your lovely parting gift awaits.
  10. She's coming to you. No longer listed among staff on our website and cancelled her 49er twitter page. Like Karen, her heart never left Texas.
  11. Big difference between suspensions from anger (if that was the case) and suspensions used as a teaching tool. Young people know that difference at heart, even if they sometimes aren't willing to admit it. Karen's not stupid. She may take into account the team's history in her handling of them. She's also her player's best friend outside of practice. Could be ya'lls girls have been so screwed up as to be beyond repair, but a few recruiting classes will fix that. Be patient and you will be rewarded.
  12. Firstly, congratulations Mean Green on your hire of Karen Aston. What you are getting is a coach both difficult and easy to understand. She will demand total dedication from her players, both on the court and in the classroom. If they miss class, they will be suspended. If they don't write a paper on time, they will be suspended. If they disrespect the coaches, they will be suspended. If they don't hustle and play attention in practice, they will be embarrassed in front of their peers. Do not be surprised if some of them can't take all that and decide to transfer. What they get in return for their dedication is a chance to learn basketball and life from someone who has quite an understanding of both. How many people in this world would win 27 games, be in position to contend the following year for a league championship, and give that all up to take on a major rebuild just from a sense of responsibility to family? Not too many. I think. So, welcome her, embrace her, and support her and your team. Some of us here in Charlotte surely wish we still had that opportunity. This post has been promoted to an article
