  1. With all the CUSA defections and if they don't merge with the Mountain West is this still a better conference then the Belt? While there might be some name recognition with these schools is the conference long term viability better then where we are?

The only value CUSA now has is Tulsa, ECU, and USM. To a lesser extent for us UTEP. I still think that those teams hold more name recognition than most SBC schools.

    CUSA has truly been gutted.

Memphis has some mega-huge boosters that are highly influential (CEO of FedEx) and the basketball program is nationally relevant. The word on most of the Big East message boards is that adding Memphis was done in attempt to quell the fire about Cincinnati and Louisville leaving the conference. Pitino openly promoted adding Memphis long before there was talk of adding Houston, SMU, Navy, San Diego State, and Boise State. Memphis can turn their football program around if Fuentes (former TCU offensive coordinator) can recruit some local talent. Basketball-wise, while not what they were under Calipari, are still a solid addition to the conference.

I'm not thrilled about adding Memphis but if it helps in any way to keep Cincy and UL in line I'm all for it.

I hear from Memphis fans that their local radio reported that it was Notre Dame and Louisville that lobbied for Memphis to get in. I can almost bet that those schools both threatened to leave the BE if they weren't added.

  2. The rush is how they plan to make this work. They want to form a completely new conference and get a new TV deal. We are in one of the largest markets and would give them a significant boost in negotiations.

Yes, and I am sure they are looking over it now. If we get chosen to move up we will, if we don't it proves that we aren't a big enough draw to justify splitting the pie up more. That unfortunately is the hard truth.

The way I see it its win win for us if we play our cards right.

    1. The merger fails and CUSA/MWC want to get to 12 teams and we have a good chance with 8 spots available.

    2. The merger goes through only if they need more members, we are selected.

    3. The merger goes through with current members, or they add other teams that aren't us. The SBC expands to 12 or 14 and comes out strong. Now only 9 FBS conferences remain.

  3. The C-USA/Mountain West is starting to look really really weak from a media market perspective. There is just not much population in most of these areas. I think they're going to have to risk adding some large market teams even if those teams haven't drawn well historically.

I think the following teams would be the only ones considered

    UNT (5th largest market)

San Jose State (6th largest market. Does Fresno help cover this market already?)

FAU or FIU (16th largest market. No need for both)

    Middle Tennessee (26th largest market)

    Utah State (36th largest market)

    San Antonio (37th largest market.

Hmmm....my take would be to take UNT and one of the FU's to get to 18 (move UTEP West). If 20 is possible, then I'd also add MTSU and Utah State.

The problem is there is no rush to add us. Where else are we going to go?? If the merger goes through they could have a few years to work it out and see if they need the extra teams. There is no rush.

Now I'm sure they are running the numbers and seeing what all the options are but if we don't bring enough/the TV partners aren't pushing for it. we aren't going anywhere. That's just the truth.

If the Merger does happen the SBC needs to kill off the WAC. FBS going from 11 to 9 leagues is a huge boost for us and suddenly our conference gets more name recognition. The SBC could come out very well in the end if we can hold and add some teams.

    Imagine

    NMSU

    UNT

    ULL

    ULM

    LA Tech

    stAte

    WKU

    MTSU

    South Alabama

    Troy

    FAU

    FIU

If NMSU is too far out west and I'm not even sure I would want LA Tech replace them with UTSA and TXSTSM, or mix and match any of those programs.

If I had my way I would want to push for something big and also get

    Appalachian State

    Old Dominion

not to mention it would and to accommodate our brothers in the west.

  4. OOPS! didn't see that coming. congrats to Memphis if its true.

Like I said, I think we are underestimating the loss of Syracuse. They were top ranked for a long time and are #3 now, in the whole country. Pitt is usually a top 25 team as well. Its a big deal.

I could also see the BE getting ready to lose Louisville to the Big XII, or as an effort to keep UL happy by adding a strong regional partner. Time will tell if this is true.

If they lose Louisville and Cincinnati expect all hell to break loose.

  5. its my understanding that the Big East is looking for a another "football only" program, not an "all sports" member. if so, i don't see Memphis as a player. if AFA changes mind now that Navy has committed they are in. however, if they stay committed to MWC/CUSA then Temple is target, but over 'Nova's dead body. ECU is always available.

But Memphis is a good way to keep the basketball schools happy. Losing Pitt and Syracuse is a big blow to BE basketball.

  6. I think if a western slot opens up, the folks in Logan, Utah are going to get it. There is no presence in that state anymore and the Mountain Network needs that state. I doubt San Jose State will get anymore consideration than we do.

The hardest thing to accept about this all to me is that absolutely no one in college football above our level thinks we bring anything to their conference. Location, enrollment, alumni size, improved results, great facilities, etc...I guess it means nothing to CUSA or the MWC folks. The real question here is WHY NOT? Why can't we get anyone to see this all and say that we are a school that should be added? Is it just because of football's poor record during the latter Dickey years and the Dodge era? Because if it is, that seems amazingly short-sighted. As a matter of fact, I don't buy that as an excuse. Anyone with half a brain could look at the attendance bump we have enjoyed since Dodge came here and now with Coach Mac and the new stadium and see that if we got to play teams from a better-known league that we could draw even better. I just don't get it. I will say it again, but the more I look at our situation, the more the reality sets in with me that Apogee Stadium probably saved our football program, but it won't save us from staying at this level of football, whether that continues as FBS in the future or not.

It can't be that hard to see, is it?

Potential is just that. Potential. You can potentially succeed, or fail miserably. The posters here may not like it but potential means nothing if you can't make something of it. Look at the teams that get talked about for consideration, they stand on their own merits not on what could be. Their success lives outside of the conference they are in, meaning they don't rely on their conference to succeed. If we have so many students and alumni, why is the stadium not full? We don't have excuses to make, games should all be sold out and the university isn't doing enough to exploit our potential.

Show that you can stand on your own two feet and we will get somewhere bigger and better.

  7. I'm tired of people on here complaining about students not caring about athletics. They go to The University of North Texas. UNIVERSITY. Every student's first priority should be about their school work and their future careers. Football is not the main reason they are here, or basketball, etc.

I'm not talking about the people who say they wish the students would support the team, because I wish that too. I am talking about the people who say the students don't support the football team hate the school or do a disservice to the university. Its a ridiculous statement. Support should not be a tyrannical requirement.

Better yet, lead by example and show them how its done. People will come around more that way than bashing them and calling them less for not going.

  8. The problem is that UNT markets itself to these types of students. UNT focuses on how their the biggest, cheapest and most accessible university in DFW. I never see UNT really putting an effort into building a sense of pride or accomplishment into attending the university. More like, "hey, we're UNT, we have every degree at an affordable price that almost anyone can earn!"

Makes us seem like the Wal Mart of universities.

In part because they are trying to boost enrollment to 45k students. As we do that we plan on building the staff quality and numbers and then raise admission standards to try and try to be seen as a more prestigious college to get in to. Atleast thats what I got from their Tier 1 overview.

  9. Possible outcome. However, the CUSA contract pays for a Champ. game, the would have to re-negotiate that and possibly lose revenue. Their network will have to share the game with the Mtn. and I could see a problem there. Not saying its a deal breaker but some consideration.

Also with 2 leaving the MWC they will have 8 sports members, and 7 for Olympic sports. I can't imagine they would want to stay at 7, so I see 1 all sports like Utah State, or a non-football team being added.

On an added note, if the teams stay and the alliance goes through, the MWC will have to go to 12 to match CUSA. Meaning they take two from the

WAC, or us with one from the WAC in a best case scenario. Either way that leaves the WAC ripe for a raid. The SBC should expand at that point.

  10. First of all, you take care of your backyard and I'll take care of mine. I really don't need you telling me how I need to act for starters. Who are you, the Emily Post of North Texas? Well, I know many more than myself thru the years who need to catch up on that than myself. Red numbers? Bring em' on! I don't give a rat$ A$--never have. North Texas has had too many dumb sheep following the wrong (bad) leadership for way too long as in............most of my adult life? If our modus operendi had been the other way, North Texas wouldn't be up against upstart program UTSA in some of this conference smack board tommyrot! There! I said it! Many others have for damn sure thought it.

I am not running for Mayor of U of North Texas so I could care less if I get "votes or no votes" on any post, especially on a freakin' college smack board of all places. North Texas athletics is still the toy section of the department store of my life and I'd suggest you accept that same philosophy because if you don't, you will probably only be disappointed because we could very well be running in place the next 25 years as we have most of the last 25 years while being totally irrevelant (as was mentioned in the DRC recently).

Shit, look at UTSA getting as much print space as we are on some of those other message boards--so does that tell you the impact our athletic program which has moslty been slobber-knockin' toward the bottom most my damn life--I am not happy about that, either. IMHO it seems you are still taking all this smack sports boards business way too damn serious. For what its worth, I am more worried about what Greece and Italy are going to do with their Euro-Economies and then how America is going to respond to it--now that's the kind of stuff that gets my attention.

I will be 61 years old this month, I've been following a program that most of my adult life has been a running joke. Hirings have been mostly abysmal and the firings of under-achieving slackers have been rare. Many my age & up (who are still around) have seen other programs after programs pass us by while North Texas continually "ran in place" while trying to find its identity, the perfect logo, the perfect branding along with the perfect shade of green (with many slackers on the payroll getting paid rather nicely who could have really just cared less but merely wanted to hang on to get that State of Texas retirement).

North Texas during the last 4 decades has been a program of which the word "potential" has all but become an ugly word for many of us. Yet if I have an opinion I'm going to by God express it no matter where the hell I want to express it. Beggin' your pardon, but you sound just like some in Washington who are trying to tell Americans how they are supposed to act, how they are supposed to believe, how they are supposed to eat, how they are supposed to take a shit and they also don't mind if you express an opinion as long as it is their opinion--let's see how long that last.

    Have A Nice Day.:)

You have every right to post whatever you want, and your opinion on any board. I, however, have that same right to criticize your posts which in my opinion are completely embarrassing.

People don't like what you post and then you start tearing down schools that have achieved more than we have?

You don't get it either, because the last time TCU had a league association with UT there were times the Frogs didn't even show up on the Sagariin radar at all like when yall averaged 2 wins a season for almost 1 and 1/2 decades? Smoke on that one............and still how strange that TCU has such strong feelings about North Texas "NOT" taking their spot in the North Texas Metroplex? Care to explain to this board while yall are still even on this board and not full time on the Big 12 smack board just frog pee'in' away?

Other than the DFW TV market, just why do you think the Big East even gave SMU the time of day? Fake attendance numbers at their Ford Stadium sealed that deal for the 'Stangs? I hardly think so. Hell, we are drawing more real butts in seats after 7 losing seasons than SMU is on their way to a 2'nd bowl game in as many seasons.

Hey Froggie, do you remember when North Texas hosted Texas A & M at Texas Stadium before a shade over 50,000 fans? Oh, mostly Aggies you might say? Just like when the Aggies used to come to Amon Carter Stadium back in the ol' SWC, ya' think? (That crowd at Texas Stadium was about 60/40 North Texas fans for what its worth).

AND..........were you around Fort Worth pre-Francione? I was and I know what the losing cycle did for TCU fan support and what it will do again no matter if you are in the Big 12 as in....... (can you say, uh, B-a-y-l-o-r-)? Even if UT or OU are bringing 15,000 traveling fans to TCU just ask Baylor what kind of coffee that and a buck will get ya' in the Big 12. Ask Baylor what part of the conference standings they have dwelled in almost since Day One of their membership in the Big 12, too? TCU cannot compete against UT and OU year in and year out, but UT and OU are short-termers in the Big 12 anyway so enjoy the Horns and Sooners while you can.

Fact still is you of the MWC...........TCU DOES NOT WANT NORTH TEXAS TO TAKE THEIR PLACE IN THE MWC. Look at the TCU responders on this very subject even now? It's almost laughable! Does that give the rest of you MWC'ers a subtle hint of the school that screwed your pooch, ie, "YOUR" conference to social climb their way to the Big East/Big 12?

So all you tensed up TCU'ers you can spin all this irrevelant lagniape about North Texas as much as you want but it still doesn't change the truth of yall being upset almost beyond sanity with the very idea that North Texas could get your DFW spot in the MWC since yall abandoned this league while not giving a rat's butt how it would affect the MWC of today or the MWC in the future.

And Amon Carter Stadium? How ironic that less than 2 weeks after North Texas announces it is going to build what is now the equivalent of a $100,000,000 plus new football palace between 2 Texas interstates for many future Mean Green recruits & their parents to easily see; anyhow, just nevermind how good ol' TCU couldn't stand the region wide publicity North Texas was getting out of that huge announcement that came from the largest damn university with the largest alumnus body in the entire North Texas Metrplex so yall then announce your ACS stadium re-make within weeks?

TCU: You best keep your sphere of support in Fort Worth because it ain't going to go nowhere else except........Fort Worth. Then wait till Mr. Losing Cycle visits TCU again and see how "Your Home Team" town supports you then.

Yeah, great argument. Lets show them our top BCS rankings, or our Rose Bowl win vs. Wisconsin. Oh wait, we don't have one  Talking smack about a team that has done more than us, yeah and you wonder why they are putting you down? Even putting down SDSU, who has been ranked and seeded in the NCAA Tournament? Pathetic.

And for someone saying message boards shouldn't be taken serious, you are saying TCU doesn't want us to take their place in the MWC. Based on what? Did you do a gallup poll? Or are you just basing that on ... wait for it.... a message board???? Great logic there.

  11. Yeah, that is me but we've been a laughing stock for most of the last 15-25 years prior to this one no matter what is posted on a collegiate smack board. If SMU with the crap I've read on their board can get a Big East invite, then I like our chances for CUSA or the MWC.

Yet if you think smack board posters have any influence in any of this then why aren't North Texas athletic employees posting on this one--even just time to time? I take a smack board for what it is: An online cyber trip to a bar with a bunch of athletic boosters from various schools who sometimes act is if they have had one too many. Nothing I posts compares to the unadulterated lagniape you get from SMU or La Tech posters. I don't think the Big East officials read the SMU board then suddenly decided: "Yep! We just have to include those Stangs in the Big East no matter what an entire host of schools say about their fake attendace."

Yes, I have a pissing contest going on with a couple of TCU fans and I don't even pay attention to the California contingency because they post as if they just graduated from middle school.

Yet TCU really does not want North Texas to take their place in the MWC and for what it's worth, I don't blame them. Their Big 12 experiment could turn out to be as disastrous as Baylors has been and a successful North Texas in the MWC would trump a terrible TCU football program in the Big 12--simple as that.

Nopers, conference decision-making on admitting new league members will not come from a college or conference smack board. Mark that in 3 inch headlines because that is a fact.

HINT: ESPN is mostly in charge of the NCAA and just about every thing relating to conference expansion--not conference message boards. We have to hope and even pray that ESPN likes what we are doing in Denton even without Craig James up there in New York's ESPN headquarters to brag about us--seems he probably did his persuasive handywork for another school truth be known.

The thing is your giving them ammo. No they don't make the decisions, but there is nothing good that can come from talking about our school in that way. IMO you should never go to another conference board and bash anyone, even if they bash you. Your a guest there, show humility and people will eventually come around and be courteous. Your just adding fuel to the fire.
