Beard was an assistant under Vic Trilli for 2 years so he already has some familiarity with North Texas. In addition Beard replaced Fred Rike, who was Johnny's assistant head coach for several years at North Texas, as the Head Coach at Angelo State. Only question for Beard is if he can recruit. Does anyone know if he played a role in recruiting Trilli's first classes at NT? If he did then the answer may be yes.

Have we ever hired a winning high school coach for basketball? That might work. On second thought we already tried that. We don't want an assistant unless he is a great recruiter. Right?

I know several people who went to P5 schools (A&M, OU, KSU, UT,LSU) who have purchased club seats or season tickets and have no other connection to UNT other than living in the area. Yet, they show up and hope for the best. Several showed up the other night. I suppose that their are some people who just can't help but root for an underdog. In fact I recently spoke to 2 individuals who attended P5 schools that attended their first UNT games ever last year with their children. Both said they and their kids enjoyed it and plan on coming back. I suppose it all depends on who you know.

"Will not play" may be viewed as relating to this year or may be viewed as he will never play, depending on the person who reads the statement. It would not be surprising for a young person to change their mind (look at the team picture and see if a particular walk on is missing from the bench). The fact that the person is showing up and sitting near the bench with the team may for some be a clue that he may be considering playing in the future. His future status could be as a walk on. I suppose one can tolerate differing opinions and give the person who expresses them the benefit of the doubt or opt for kneejerk buffoonery.

I did not say chance, I said an educated guess (to wit: a guess based knowledge and experience). Further, that is a reference to recruiting for 90% of D1 teams. The teams that are consistently top 25-30 teams get who they want. That is not an excuse for anybody. If a coach consistently misses on his judgment of talent and/or can't coach what he has recruited then he is accountable.

When Johnny said "wait till you see this guy, he can hit 3s from anywhere beyond the arc", I took him on his word. It was a personal conversation and he was genuinely exited. He wasn't standing behind a podium blowing smoke.

Recruiting for 90% (my approximation) of D1 basketball is an educated guess. I have been disappointed with many of Benford's past recruits. However, I had Johnny tell me on a few occasions "wait until you see" a named recruit, and the player never panned out.

So let me get this straight. You would have been praising Benford on the first day to sign if he had signed a player that had no offers .
