  1. There should never, ever be another post wondering why fans don't show up to UNT football games. It's not that it's a liberal arts school, music school, or a commuter school. No one shows because this team is not good and never has been.
  2. I agree. They didn't even have the screens showing the game. A good idea with terrible execution. Is it really that difficult to do?
  3. We just got back from the game. If any of you wonder why Denton doesn't support this team, tonight should be the answer. Nevertheless, here are two gripes: 1) We walked straight into the UNT merchandise store ready to buy, and all they had were some golf shirts, a few hoodies, and some t-shirts. My wife says, "they don't even have any women's wear." WTF? The selection was absolutely pitiful for a gameday store. It's not "supply chain" issues either, it was this bad last year. A stadium full of customers but no compelling merchandise? Only at UNT. 2) I had to wait for my wife, so I sat at Alumni Pavilion around 6pm. Not a soul there. Some folks walked up and said, "It looks like nobody uses it." After the game . . . completely dark. For the life of me, I don't know why UNT doesn't use this great facility. It's got a good outside seating area and is in a great location, but it's completely under utilized. Why not light it up after the game and invite folks to come on in and have a drink after the game? Maybe invite some alumni over? Nope. Once again, UNT doesn't exploit opportunities for a better fan experience. Sad.
  4. As you can tell from my name, this is sad news. Although jazz is certainly not popular, the jazz programming at KNTU was a unique and quirky characteristic of UNT. Sadly, these unique characteristics are disappearing quickly. This will be the beginning of KNTU chasing/changing formats every few years searching for that elusive young radio listener that no longer exists. It won't be long before it will be just like all the other generic FM stations that no one listens to or appreciates.
  5. What are the plans for tailgating before the game? We've never attended a game at Toyota stadium. Anyone have an area they've already checked out?
  6. Let's just skip to colleges sponsoring minor league teams, and get rid of the entire idea of a "student athlete." Colleges get simply pay the athletes, and the athletes can pay for an education if they want to.
  7. Thanks for the responses. We'll be there for SMU.
  8. Hello everyone, what was the tailgating scene like on Saturday? We really enjoy tailgating a couple times every season, but between the masks and max attendance levels, we're concerned that there isn't much going on before the game. Any comments comparing Saturday with a typical game day?
  9. I'm a professor, and in the last few years when I mention football, even pro football, I get more and more blank stares. Of course, there is still a percentage of students who "connect," but there appears to be a growing number who do not. Maybe this late millennial generation cares less about football, like prior generations have cared less about boxing or baseball.
  10. I like Chik Fil A but not to the point of puking. :) I'll be in 206 row 5 seat 22!
  11. Huge thanks to everyone who has offered their tailgate scene to me. I will make it a mission to stop by and hang out with each of you. My name's Aaron, and I'll be wearing all green (including shoes) and my lucky cowboy hat. I'm really looking for to this game, and I predict great things!
  12. I'm a long-time lurker here, and the wife and I attend a couple of games every year. Unfortunately, this year the wife is out of town, but I can't miss the UTSA game, so I'm flying solo. I'd like to take the opportunity to check out the tailgating scene before the game. If anyone has an extra seat on their tailgate, I'd be grateful to hang with a crew. I'm your generic middle aged white guy who listens to the Ticket and loves beer. Thanks!
  13. The longer this deal went on, the shakier it got. If there's a demand, and the resulting profit, for convention space, someone will build it. Why involve the government at all?
  14. Yes, the UNT Library system was partially funded by the state, and it should have been funded only with student fees. The UNT library, which is grossly underfunded and showing it, had nothing directly to do with the shortfall. Funding is determined way above the paygrade of librarians or even the dean.
  15. I just bought some UNT shirts and hats at the Walmart on 288. They offred two or three designs. Not a wide selection but plenty of stock.
  16. The provost's letter is a direct response to public outcry. Believe me, he would have never responded so quickly if there wasn't a growing movement. Nevertheless, the Provost never states that the cuts aren't mandated, they are, it's just a question have how they will affect the library. Right now, it appears that the administration is beginning to muddy the waters so the PR damage can be minimal. I know this topic isn't football related, but you folks know better than most the hurt that comes with supporting a university that appears not to return that support.
  17. But from what I've gathered, here's the deal: At some point, however many years back, UNT's libraries were joint funded through state funds and student fees. Back then, the fees were designed to be a supplement to state funds to bump salaries, get new materials, etc. Then, the student library fee was increased (again, many years ago), and some people thought that the fee alone could cover the expenses of the library, salaries/wages included. So for employees past a certain cutoff date, they were paid out of student fees. And for employees before a certain date, whose pay came from state funds, they continued to be paid from state funds. To offset this, both the previous and current Dean of the Libraries asked for a fee increase, but they were declined. Now the issue is that ALL library employees have to be paid through student fees, no grandfathering allowed. This means that a student fee that was never designed to support the pay of all of the employees and running operations of the library has to do exactly that. Apogee or not, the library system would still be shafted right now. Folks, many of you are commenting on "knee jerk" student comments that position the library vs. football. There's absolutely no real connection between the two, and the library administration is not making such a case. The quote is an excellent summary of the situation, but it's even worse. The library has been making drastic cuts in the workforce, materials, and students workers for years. They are already cut to the bone and that's what makes this recent situation so shocking. Corrections to some comments: the library fee is 16.50 per credit. The Intercollegiate Athletics Fee is 10.00 per credit. The library fee has not been raised since 2004. That's right, it's been nearly 10 years since a raise. Believe me, fees and materials have gone way up in nine years. Who cares? Well, if UNT really wants to be respected as a first class institution, let alone Tier 1, it ALL begins with a research library. The truth is, this library has struggled to keep current for years, and this will make things much worse. A library invests in the future, so many cuts aren't felt immediately, it's future students who will suffer and so will UNT's reputation.
  18. Now that the game is at 4, will that conflict with the parade? I'd like to tailgate at Fouts (starting around 1, of course), but if there's a parade it may be a real mess. Has anyone considered this?
  19. I like the gimmick idea. Look at the Rangers. They sell bobble heads, etc., and they even have all-you-can-eat sections. I think that kind of idea would really bring folks out. I think UNT needs to win AND come up with some innovative marketing. There's no shame in selling your product.
  20. You've got it wrong. "They can always go give Jerry Jones $29 for the SUPREME HONOR of standing in a hallway." That's more like it.
  21. This week I've invited a few faculty and staff members to tailgate and attend the game this Saturday with my wife and I (we had a great time for the Houston game). We were soundly rejected because the prices have gone from 10 to 24 dollars and parking is now 10 dollars. I know what you folks are gonna say, "Football costs money and now that we have better facilities, etc...the prices have gone up (like Cowboys stadium)." But, considering that this program has a long way to go in terms of public perception, wouldn't it be smarter to make UNT games inexpensive and fill the stadium and not instantly raise prices? I know that faculty/staff are a small portion of the UNT fan base, but at this point shouldn't we be attempting to bring EVERYONE into the scene? It won't deter my wife and I, but it's a shame that prices have already driven off potential fans.
  22. I know that UNT makes money playing teams like Alabama, but wouldn't it be better for the program (in the long run) to avoid massive beat downs? Is it a truly mandatory part of being a smaller program? Sheesh, it sucks the life out of the players and the fans. Especially the casual fans.
  23. I couldn't agree more. We didn't sell out the OPENING of a new stadium (I was shocked as well). Consistent and active fans mean everything. Potentially consistent and active fans doesn't mean much.
