Bring back the leather helmets! Keep paying the coaches $7m a year and the players nothing. Most schools are fighting the same battle. You either evolve or get left behind!
Actually, the intent was to give the players a college education and a chance at a better future. Although, I am sure the requirement to go to class will also be attacked.
My guess you are going to be very wrong, the number of college football programs at the highest level will shrink and there will be substantially fewer scholarship players. So there will be a lot less players, but the programs left will pay well.
At least, you didn't cite that players should be getting their share of the money made. This is a common response even though 80% of the programs don't come close to making a profit.
The main issue I have is that most G5 programs and many P5 schools are substantially supported by student fees. Do you really think the average student needs to be contributing to the education of players that are making more money than most of the fans?
This won't continue at some point, the student will wise up and the major funding supporting athletics will be gone, and the number of schools left will be about the size of the NFL. Those conferences left will be in primarily in competition with the pros for fans.
I don't get your leather helmet reference. It has nothing to do with coaches' salaries or paying players. Abuses of athletes and undercover payments were commonplace.

I'm not sure how this ends up in a way that is "fair" to everybody. Unless a system is put in place with revenue sharing that requires minimum investments and maximum budgets by division, I'm not sure what can be done. I do not doubt that with the government being involved, they will look at some form of compensation provided to these schools. The problem is who will subsidize them; most likely, whoever it is will have no say.
The government started the problem when the Supreme Court made a completely insane decision
I wonder if they even realized the effect of this decision on amateur sports? Did they believe that this would only lead athletes to picking up a few dollars signing autographs and making appearances at the local auto dealership? I doubt they saw this facilitating the open buying of players.
The essence of sports is to maintain as fair as possible competition, This was obviously ignored in favor of individual rights.
I believe this will be changed, but it will be after most of us old fans are long gone. NIL drifting down to the high school level and title 9 implications should be factors that demonstrate to everyone how foolish the current NIL rules are.

I assume everyone understands that getting the impact transfers, in this new world of moving to the highest bidder, requires our university to be able to bid with the rest of college football. I mean, surely nobody would come on this board to complain about how we are losing players to schools that have strong NIL collectives while simultaneously refusing to contribute to the solution....because that would just make you look kinda ridiculous.
Absolutely nothing
Even if I had money to burn, I am not hypocritical enough to contribute to something I think is ruining sports

Littrell was offered the job. Here is a FTW article about the reasons he turned it down. May be behind a pay wall…
“Littrell was in demand, and UNT did everything it could to keep him while knowing he was likely gone. After the '18 season, he was offered the Kansas State head coaching job to replace the retiring Bill Snyder.”
“Littrell wanted it, but he reportedly balked at some of K-State’s details, which reportedly included language regarding assistant coaches and the buyout number.”

Thanks, I had forgotten this part of the story.

Per his agent, I have never believed Littrell was really offered that position.
Whether there was any real interest by KSU of signing LIttrell is unknown. To be fair, Littrell was seen as an up and coming coach at the time.
NT didn't want to lose Littrell and signed him to I am sure the biggest contract every offered by the Mean Green.
My belief is primarily based on the idea that if Littrell was actually offered by KSU, he would have immediately taken the job. I can't believe that many hc's would turn down a Big Twelve job (at the time a top tier league) to remain in CUSA.

Closer=Great Player
Not necessarily, Rodman, Chamberlain, for example were great players; not sure they were great closers. Rodman was a great closer on the defensive end, but certainly not on the offensive end. Chamberlain seldom made free throws, so I am not sure anybody would call him a great closer.
NT's D. J. Draper on the other hand was someone that most wanted shooting critical shots, but I don't think many would classify him a great player.

I don't think the issue is not having a closer, it is not having a great player on the team. Perry is close to not being replacable, and there is no one on the team close to his skill level.
Obviously, in the Boise game; NT went went into a coma at the end of the game. Nothing worked and I think it was a combination of NT players losing focus, bad coaching, very questionable refereeing, and an inspired Boise team. Having your best players foul out lost the game.

First two rounds are at UTEP. We have to play 21-9 UTEP first. If we get by them, we'd play the winner of FAU/UTA.
We swept FAU, and got swept by UTA.
Not competitive against UTEP in anything is not a good look.
I don't know how you label this year as anything but disappointing. Porter is now 33-31 at NT. but 20-13in the AAC
Apparently recruiting McNeese's coach and players is not a recipe for much success in a tougher conference
I think her recruiting will be a strong signal of her future at NT. However, this last year's team looked physically better than most of their opposition. They just didn't seem as well coached and make way too many errors.

Although I disagree with a lot of Side Show Joe's points, it was a well thought out analysis of the season.
My grading of the last NT football season:
QB, A- Agree that Rogers should be the league all-AC pick
Tulane's QB will probably be the selection, because he had a substantially better supporting cast
RB's, A- Can't remember NT ever having this deep of a rb rotation
Adeyi obviously had the best year, but a healthy Adaway maybe his equal
TE, C- Almost never used as receivers, Blocking was satisfactory
The assumption has to be that they were not up to standard, as NT is recruiting a bunch of TE's
WR's, A Maclin was a star and as such has already been hired away
Sides was surprisingly good as a freshman
Great depth with Burns, Ward, Cleveland, others
OL B- Too many sacks given up, partially caused by QB decisions
With most starters returning, just thought they underperformed relative to expectations
Offence A- Borderline great performance
Need to improve short yardage critical plays
DL C- 3 man line was frequently overpowered
Brown and Rickards are plus defense players
LB D Definite problem position
DB D Lots of game losing errors
Played soft conservative defense
Still gave up many long plays
Defense D
Overall defence rated somewhere between bad and awful
The national rating was earned
The defense did steadily improve particularly in the late conference games
This switch to a 3-5-3 was a definite problem for the defense
We can only hope this defense works with more familiarity and players recruited for it
Coach Morris B-
I was not a particular fan of this hire, wanted and expected someone other than another assistant coach without D1 hc experience
Started off terribly but made steady improvement through the year
Like the way he presents himself and the program
Great offensive production
Defense must substantially improve
Recruiting must continue to improve

Here is one example of the rule. There are many more if you google it
https://informedathlete.com/the-facts-about-guaranteed-multi-year-ncaa-di-scholarships/
4 hours ago, VideoEagle said:The NCAA started allowing, but not requiring, multiyear scholarships in 2012. A few years later, the autonomous conferences - Pac 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, Big XII, plus Notre Dame - agreed to have multiyear scholarships for football. One website, Informedathlete.com, started calling this a rule and this has been widely quoted by other websites. But there wasn't an enforcement mechanism ever implemented - if a school chose to ignore the agreement, there was never any penalty. It was never an NCAA rule. And it appears there were always multiple exceptions to it that individual conferences and even schools had. Generally, if there was a change in head coach players that didn't fit the new scheme were encouraged (and usually helped) to move on and free up the scholarships for players that fit the new scheme.
Thanks, was not aware of this; I knew individual conferences had rules; but not a group of conferences.
However, is it a rule if no one has to follow it?

Before last year, only the P5 conferences had the "rule" that once you signed, it was good for the entire four years. This was not in place at any G5 or FCS, but as you mentioned, a general "handshake agreement" was, in most cases, honored. With P5s, there were always those who were encouraged to look elsewhere. Still, starting last year, highlighted by Sanders at Colorado, it became very open when the coach announced he would and did cut players, so even though the rule is still in place, it does not seem to be enforced any longer.
P5 has no different rules than g5. P5 was an unofficial term used to denote those conferences that would be eligibility in the major bowl games. There is no difference in D1 rules based on conference affiliation.
All athletic scholarships are for one year and have been for a long time.
Schools generally reoffered ships on an annual basis because of the fear that not doing so would destroy their recruiting. Also players where assured that the ship would be renewed in the recruiting process.
In today's environment, NIL and frequent transfers, a lot of the trust that used to exist between players and schools has been lost. Agreements (non-binding) between players and coaches may be entered into, but once those coaches are gone; so is the agreement.

Looks like MVSU is funding their program by playing a lot of buy games. Just like Alcorn State last year, MVSU is playing zero nonconference home games, but at least Alcorn State won a few.
MVSU has already gone to (and lost by):
LSU (46 points)
Oklahoma (39 points)
UConn (34 points)
TCU (34 points)They will also travel to play Gonzaga, Baylor, and Liberty before the new year. They rallied to force overtime today at Pacific University but lost by three - that's their only single-digit loss on their 0-7 season.
Hopefully we are able to get all of our guys on the court by the 10-minute mark of the second half.
This has been going on for a long time. Many of the historically black colleges finance their programs by playing away games almost exclusively in the non-conference.
It could be a better tactic than relying on student fees.

I don't think NT gets much from these buy a game opponents. Glad their at least getting some nice neutral site contests.
The aac needs to make a scheduling deal with a comparable conference to provide some decent ooc games.

For those that have better things to do on Saturday Morning, my recap.
NT 71-50, over N. Dakota but it was a lot tougher than the final score
Kernal with 15 points, 9 rebounds, Moore 16 points, Lampkin 11 points, 10 rebounds
This maybe the worst refereed game; I have witnessed. I have made this comment multiple times ruining my credibility, however it should be stated.
It was not that the officials favored one side, they were just totally incompetent. For those who want referees who just "let them play", this game may just change your mind.
NDS did have their star player knocked out of the game, lots of almost fights, and the referees lost control of the game for extensive periods.
This was USM's so-called tournament, no champion and no chance of USM playing NT.
The NT proved a lot, beat a much larger team in a crazy environment. 8 a.m. starting time and the teams' members outnumbered the fans. Early start time not to interfere with football game, great bit of planning there.

Jason Burton’s basketball team is FUN to watch . Good athletes playing tough defense and team ball. We are 5-1 with the only loss to Texas A&M , who we outscored in the 2nd half .
MBB fans - go watch them in person and give the ladies a watch on ESPN+ to give them a chance and see what I mean .
I have not watched the WBB team since the Tina Slinker days . I am confident this is the best team since the Jalie Mitchell/Rosalyn Reades team, if not better .
inside players for ‘23-‘24 team are talented with Lampkin and Bernal. Moore is very good mid range player . Guards will push it and players will run the floor. Djani Robinson’s heart can not be matched. She is playing hurt and playing well through it.
Let’s turn UNT into a basketball double power house and the best in the Plex.
Fully agree, this team could be the best ever at NT if they continue to get better.

It is an exhibition for Angelo St and a regulation game for NT.
This has been going on for years, although it been a long time since NT participated in this type game.
It was created to help D1 schools fill their early schedules with easy games. Because it seems few want to play difficult away games without a big check.
The lower classification school gets a payday and it does not count on their record. A highly motivated lower class team versus an overconfident buy a win team has resulting in embarrassing upsets.

I'm not as negative about the Portal as most, but I agree. Given the fluidity of player movement in college football, you just always need to be putting your best guys out there to get you the win. If that's a True Freshman, so be it.
No need for sandbagging. It's not like we're playing for draft position.
The decision should be based on whether it is more important to play them one game and lose a possible year of eligibility or have 4 more years of play left.
I would absolutely not use a player in this situation.
Winning the game does not substantially change the season. Nor, is one defensive player likely to change the outcome of the game.
The theory that remaining eligibility is not a driving factor in utilizing players because there is a high likelihood you are going to lose them anyway is a losing philosophy.

Not that I'm not jealous, because getting in to the ACC is a VERY big deal, and SMU deserves kudos for that, but do you believe the donors footing the bill for this move will be happy with their investment if you wind up being the Vanderbilt of the ACC?
Why is it a big deal, they are paying a fortune to be in a conference with no close members?
Kind of like NT in the Big West, other than NT didn't have any other options. Football may if they spend enough NIL money be successful, but I think they have substantially harmed all their other sports with the exception of Women's soccer.
