I don’t know how many times Davis had an answer after we hid a big bucket.  Several times in the 2nd half I was thinking, “I don’t care if they hit a 3, just don’t let it be Davis that hits it.”

And the game winner!?!?  He’s off-balance, it’s well defended to avoid fouling him…and still…swish.

That guy would be so fun to watch if you were an FAU fan, but it was maddening to watch him yesterday.

That being said, I thought we outplayed them and definitely proved that we belong.

Based on limited viewing, I agree with the announcers that Davis is the best player in the conference.

I always wonder about hires like this. I hope he does well in his job, but is there not a UNT Alumni in this field of work that could fill this position at UNT? Just seems like you need someone who actually cares about UNT in this position. I am not saying that he will not care, but looking at his resume, there is nothing that ties him to UNT and pushes him to make this university great.

Hire the best person you can.  Would you want NT grads to get most of the coaches jobs also?  Burton is doing fairly well replacing one of the greatest players in NT history as coach.

Why would you pick everyone above him?

I perceive the others to be better team players, although Mitchell didn't have the coaching or team mates that recent NT players have.

Tony Worrell, Chris Davis or Kenneth Lyons.

    Rick

IMO the unquestionable best players for years was Ken Lyons and Joe Hamilton.  I would now add Perry to that list.

It may be but I will hold off on making that claim. Coach Burton certainly has the potential to be the best WB Coach ever as well.

I think that accolade is just about in the bag.  Karen Aston's one year NT career would be the closest challenge.

Jason Burton was a home run hire for the University of North Texas women's basketball program. It was clear from the moment the Mean Green hired Burton away from Texas A&M Commerce that he was the right person to lead the team into the American Athletic Conference.

Even knowing that, it's likely that no one expected North Texas to be as good as the team has been so far this season.

The Mean Green sit at 16-3 on the season and 6-1 in conference play. The only losses have been to Texas A&M, Montana State and Charlotte in the first game of AAC play. The team's won six in a row since, including victories over SMU and South Florida.

And those two wins are notable because the teams were expected to be the cream of the crop in the conference. USF was selected to win the AAC in the preseason poll, while SMU was picked to finish fourth. UNT? 12th out of the 14 teams, ahead of only UAB and FAU.

The season's not over, but based on their play thus far; I think they are the best ever.  The only team close would be the Reades and Mitchell teams.

I wonder if Quincy Noble now regrets her decision to transfer to Ok St.  She is currently averaging about 13 points and 3 rebounds for OSU (11-8, 4-4).  She was a NT great, but she might be getting more playing time at OSU than she would on this NT team.

  6. Mitchell was the most talented athlete by a substantially margin.   However, I would pick every other choice ahead of him to be on my team.

I am sure there are players that can duplicate the feat, but Mitchell is the only player I have ever seem dump a basketball with each hand in one jump to the basket.

the "try hard" wasn't directed at you directly. it was in the OG post and it's cropped up sooooo much as a defense for his minutes.

he's been averaging 15 minutes a night in the 9 D1 games since Boise. 133 minutes to be exact. he's taken 9 shots in 133 minutes.

in his season high against Temple...25 minutes...he logged a stat line of 0 points on 0-0FG, 0-0FT, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 foul. it's hard to not accidentally end up with a few rebounds in 25 minutes. he's at best a passenger when he's on the floor, at worst a liability on both ends.

if this is honestly giving more than what either Cotton or Moore can, then we have recruited poorly

My guess is that he provides much more on defense than the other named choices.  No way to prove, other than way else would Hodge use Stone in lieu of other options.

  8. Just read on official site about NT's good showing in a 4 team meet were the highlight for the Green was getting one second place finish.  My question is why is NT willing to be so non-competitive in this sport.

They actually had a competitive team till the former coach left and they gave the assistant coach, the current coach, the job.
It seems that this women's sport is seldom successful and yet Roth is going on her seventh year as hc.

Is there a problem with the swimming facility that limits NT's recruiting or other rationale for their overall at best mediocre performance?

Stone's plus-percentage games have all come against inferior competition...LSUS, Towson, MVSU, Omaha, Angelo State...5 games we won by an average of nearly 24 points.

Since Boise on 12/5...9 games v. D1 competition...he is 1-for-9 from the field, all of which were 3 point attempts. In the Charlotte game, he was terrified of the ball and was a liability on defense...he had a terrible foul on the put-back/shot-clock play, at least twice missed boards he was 100% favored for. all our runs were with Walker on the floor.

I get that he's here and clearly he's going to continue to get minutes, especially with the current injuries...but if we're full-strength and not down to basically an 8 man rotation then I haver questions about Hodge's talent assessment and if Cotton really isn't any better on either end, then I have questions about our recruiting.

and I'm so sick of the "he tries hard" tag. like, do the other 11 scholarship players not? you don't make a division 1 roster unless you try hard.

I am not defending Stone, other than just looking at the stats.

As to his points coming against inferior competition, yes; but you have to be in the game to score.   Now, he is seeing extended time and I think started one or two games.

Not sure what the tries hard comment is about.  He is on the team and I hope he and all the other players do well.

  10. Some excellent points, but what is your grading system?  Those grade to me are very high.  An "A" player to me should be at all conference first or second team level.   However, I do agree with your exceeding expectations list.

Also, you are way off on Stone;  Stone has the second best fg% on the team at 58.5& only behind Sissoko at 62.5%.  He is also the third at 3 point percentage at 35% behind only Scott and Buggs.  It anything, Stone is not shooting enough.  He is also a better than average defender, or have you noticed he is usually matched up against much bigger players.

I don't think Scott is having as good a year as many thought he could be.   He is probably the best player on the team, but is not at the all star level many were predicting.

Buggs has not underperformed, he is injured; a completely different factor.

Sissoko has disappointed based on his play in the NIT last year, we all hoped we would see that player from now on; but it has not yet happened.  I think some of that maybe because of the offensive game that Hodge wants to run.  The old feed the post offense has just about disappeared.

We just don’t have the horses.

and it isn’t only stone. Sissoko HAS to get better. He is probably the worst we have had in a long long time. I know we have been spoiled with a good string of quality ones. But man. He just isn’t it. 😞

I guess if you have the horses, you never lose.

Calling out one player in a game were the entire team looked completely gassed, is suspect IMO.

A tainted 1st place. Fingers crossed that they don’t award ECU the win after the Missed Calls Review committee meeting today.

Do you really think there is a Missed Calls Review committee that changes game results?

How did you come up with that idea?

    Let's just re-cap this guy's situation.

He tore his ACL senior year of high school and spent his redshirt freshman year recovering from it.

After his recovery, he was one of the group of Oregon football players who was hospitalized from rhabdomyolysis following their workouts. It can lead to permanent/longterm disability or death.

He played in 2017, then broke his ankle in the 2018 opener. It required 3 surgeries and he missed most of 2018-2021 because of it.

After his return in 2021, he tore his achilles tendon.

He's gotten his Bachelor's and Master's from Oregon, and is donating money to a football team at a school for the deaf, as he suffers from an auditory processing disorder.

Miami seems totally fine with him playing. The NCAA seems totally fine with him playing. He wants to play. He had been granted two extra years prior to the pandemic and the achilles injury.

And THIS is the situation people are bitching about?

No, this is not the situation most are complaining about.  They would have no way of knowing his background unless they researched it like you did.

The facts are that thousands of football players have been injured and did not get a do-over and had their collegian football careers substantially shortened.

This guy deserves a lot of credit for his perseverance, but there should be limits on player's eligibility. This type of rationale opens the door to a lot of questionable maneuvering to abuse eligibility requirements.

It was a comment that Coach Burton is the best women’s coach we’ve had since Coach Petersen.  I agree, but Coach Aston was good too before being hired away by Texas.

Coach Pete was a bad coach, his reference I am assuming was a joke.

I’ve gotta speak up…. When Grant McCasland left as we knew he would I was resigned to appreciate the tremendous run the Mean Green basketball program just had BUT, I was ready for the usual 5 to 6 year drought that usually historically follows.   BUT DAMN, NOT THIS TIME !  This UNT basketball program, players and coaches, are for real and it’s fun .

    Nuff said, GMG.

McCasland did wonderful things here, but at this point; I'm not sure if NT didn't keep the best coach in that staff.
