  1. I think we all need to step back from all of the negative commentary and articles regarding DD's firing and realize something. These "barbs" are coming from people with a drastically different perspective on NT football...and NT in general...than we are. For many 4 Sun Belt titles and 4 NO Bowl bids is the summit of our proverbial mountain, as high as NT football "has a right" (to quote one of the detractors) to go. They don't look at us as upwardly mobile, don't see this as a "sleeping giant." They see a school with a long history of languishing in the depths of 1A football (yet don't see how DD has kept us there) and assume that we have already seen the promised land.

I vehemently disagree! I see this school, and this program, as only scratching the surface of where we can go. And I trust RV to do the scratchin'.

  2. Anyone notice that it is a USM coach who RV stated wasn't in contention and it's only USM fans who are quick to jump to his defense by calling RV "unprofessional"?

And, no, it's not that the USM coach is in contention and therefore USM fans are here to read about it...at least not entirely. I'm sure a UTEP fan or two or perhaps a Tech fan has dropped by to see what has been said about Price or Dykes. Yet, somehow, they haven't taken RV to task for publicly expressing his wishes. Gee, I wonder why. Could it be that Tech and UTEP fans haven't had their school's honor wounded by the suggestion that one of their own isn't good enough to be our next head coach? Frankly I'm sure it's the assumption of most if not all Southern Miss fans that ANYONE who is on their staff is good enough to be head coach at lil' ol' North Texas.

  3. "North Texas is not a job where they have never won and if you win a game or two you are going to be a hero," Eric Price said. "They have high expectations. It would be a challenge, but that goes with the job."

This is the most refreshing thing I may have heard in a while. A coach who actually EXPECTS this fan base to want more...amazing. Sounds to me like he believes he can win here and fully intends to do so if he gets the job. Quite a turnaround from "let's just go get our check and hope they don't embarrass us...woe is me."

  4. Perhaps winning isn't our greatest need right now. Perhaps it's excitement, plain and simple. Think about it, what if we were to have a Texas Tech type buzz but also have Texas Tech type results. I think our program, given that it is an afterthought even in the metroplex, would be better served by putting up 40 points a game and ending the season 6-6 than it would putting up 17 to 21 points a game and being 8-4. Texas Tech stands NO CHANCE against Oklahoma, Texas and the like because they can't play defense to save their lives. But they sell tickets to watch the air show. Maybe we just need a buzz to be generated right now after 9 years of snore inducing football.

    What do you think?

  5. I've never really understood why people on this board are so bitter.

Dickey did a lot for the program; he brought in a back to basics style of play and managment that the team needed.  He won four conference championship, broke the nations longest streak of bowl shuts.

I agree that he's not the right guy for the future, but I don't understand the tasteless remarks people on this board continue to make even after the guy has been let go.

I agree. We have always complained that Dickey was sarcastic and caustic in his comments about/within the program. We shouldn't show ourselves to be no better.

  6. The grapevine says that DD walked into the locker room on Wednesday and told the players he had been fired because he "Couldn't Recruit. He then asked them how that made them feel?"

Don't know if this is true or not, but it sounds like Dickey!

I won't assume this to be true. But if it is true we couldn't have made a better decision.

  7. Well some of you jokers are saying bye bye Matress Mac.??..The guy donated a ton of money to NT. I was told he was to donate more in the future but I guess the nickel and dime donations from this board will round up some money..NOT!

"I was told he was to donate more in the future."

You're officially a troll. This is your sage wisdom you're using to bash the rest of the posters on this board? You were "told" he was gonna give more money? Tell me Nostradomus when exactly was this money coming and who is your inside source? Was he going to give money when a new stadium could have taken us out of the dark ages? That would have been ten years ago. Was he going to give money when we were riding a wave of momentum and could have taken things higher? That would have been before his "buddy" went 2-9 and was on his way to 2-10. Or, at the very least, it would have been after the 2-9 season to try to kick start things. Or, was he maybe going to hold his money until he was sure Dickey would be back for another year? That's brilliant, hold your alma mater hostage over money that tcooper was "told" would be forthcoming. You wanna talk nickel and dime donations? How about the fact that this is ALL you could hope for if Dickey had stayed? What corporation wants to attach their name to a program that is floundering and shows no vision to correct things? I'm waiting tcooper..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Yeah, that's what I thought. Run along and go play now.

  8. Last time I checked, no one made you king of this board and gave you the right to try to silence other people's postings!  Unless I'm illiterate, I don't see one mention of a claim in his post to have a "source" telling him anything.  All I see is just a little ranting concern that we we make a good hire.  We should all have that concern and desire for our university.  I don't know Playmaker, but the post seemed pretty harmless to me.  If you don't like what he has to say, then no one is forcing your little index finger to click on his posts.

This is a time when we should all be united in praying that we make a good hire for our next coach, not taking classless potshots at other members of the Mean Green Nation for having a desire for the university to do well.

I humbly disagree. None of us will have a hand in the next hire, we're all in a hold pattern, and yes a few potshots here and there keep this little train movin. laugh.gif

  9. I know we're having fun with the coaching staff discussions and deciding whether Southern Miss is the most fertile recruiting ground for coaches in America but I wanna talk BCS. Who goes to the title game? Surely the winner of Mich/OSU will be there but who else? A look at the candidates:

    Florida 8-1

Wins over Tennessee and Georgia, their 1 loss is to Auburn and they still have Florida State and South Carolina to play. Currently BCS #4.

    Texas 9-1

Currently BCS #5, their 1 loss is to BCS #1 Ohio State, but who have they played? They have wins over #17 Oklahoma and #24 aTm but those rankings will fall as the season progresses. Then, they'll play a weak Big 12 North winner. Will they have the pull in the computer polls?

    Auburn 9-1

BCS #6, 1 loss is to another 1 loss team in Arkansas, wins over Florida and LSU, still have Georgia to play. With a SEC title game win would that catapult them?

    USC 7-1

BCS #7, blowout wins over Arkansas and Nebraska, their 1 loss is to Oregon State, may have the toughest road remaining of all of the 1 loss teams with games against Oregon, Cal, UCLA and Notre Dame.

    Cal 7-1

BCS #8, started the season with a loss to Tennessee, remaining game against USC, will the "weak" Pac-10 hurt them?

    Notre Dame 8-1

BCS #9, their 1 loss is to BCS #2 Michigan, win over #19 Georgia Tech, remaining game against USC. Are they too far down in the polls to make up the ground?

    Arkansas 8-1

BCS #11, their 1 loss is to USC, they have a win over Auburn and games remaining against lSU and Tennessee plus the SEC title game.

    Others of interest:

West Virginia- Loss to Louisville but a chance to beat "cinderella" Rutgers.

Rutgers- Will this be the year that the BCS locks out an undefeated BCS league team and puts a 1 loss team in the title game over them? Few are giving the Rutgers schedule much weight because they doubt the toughness of the Big East. Here's something to think about though. Louisville, the team Rutgers just beat, has offered to play 10 of the 12 SEC teams over the last five years...all of them have declined. I wonder why.... biggrin.gif

Loser of the Mich/OSU game- Their resume would include only a loss to the BCS #1 and wins over the rest of the Big Ten. Plus, Michigan would have the Notre Dame win and Ohio State would have the win over Texas. A rematch of a regular season game in the national title game?

  10. I like seeing Bailiff being added to the possible list.  The job that guy did his first year at TxSt was amazing considering the situation he was placed in.

My fav so far is Dykes.  I want a score fest. I want to see Boomer's barrel steaming hot each saturday night with people on the deck having to stand with their fingers in their ears.    I want OFFENSE!!!!!!!!

    Rick

I'm with you Rick on wanting offense. Can Dykes go out and recruit the horses to run his offense? I don't think there is currently a quarterback on our roster who is suited to run the spread or even a west coast offense. Receivers? Offensive linemen?

  11. So let me get this straight - you are encouraging people who haven't attended because of DD to not attend now just because DD was fired?  I don't give a rats ass if they are there because they love the new logos, are homeless or enjoy kettle korn.  Just show up.  We need all the fans we can get and I would guess if I'm a player I want people in the stands period.  I was going to say something else RE the players but I'll bite my tongue (fingers) on that one.

Actually I in no way said I discouraged people from coming out for WHATEVER reason. I just wondered if there might be an undertone if you will to some of the players.

  12. I know there are a lot of you who say you will now attend the FAU game because of Dickey's firing. I respect that and am glad we will have an increased crowd. I wonder though, what that says to the players. If you're out there on that field and you look up in the stands knowing that the increased attendance is due to your coach's firing do you also think to yourself "why couldn't these people just come to see me play? I bust my ass every Saturday for these folks and that's not enough to get them into the stadium? They need a special occasion."

Not saying that anyone is wrong to stay away when the product is bad and the forecast looks bleak...just that it may send a different message than intended.

  13. oh sorry, I forgot to pay my People magazine subscription, so I havent been up on my celeb gossip  tongue.gif ... thought I remembered reading she forgone the prenup back in the day, but alas, wrong again.

either way, Im truly heartbroken to hear this news. I seriously doubt my life will ever be the same.

You should try being married to a woman who wants every year (no joke) a subscription to US Weekly. Ahhhh, true romance. laugh.gif

  14. actually, K-Fed just struck gold. Since Britney was so "in love" she decided she didnt need a prenup...

hard to believe these kids didnt make it. I mean if they cant, what hope is there for the rest of us?

Not true. Actually there is a prenup in place that says he gets $300,000 for every year they were married...2. So that's $600,000 and about half of their house which will bring him about another $9,000,000. That's a lot of money but I believe chump change compared to what she's worth and what she will probably make when she gets back into the pop game.

  15. I have given this much thought, but I will not be at the FAU game next week and after 16 years of attending NT football games, I probably won't be back next year unless significant changes are made. I do not believe NT admin. is serious about the direction of the program, so why should any of us support it?  Unless the powers that be publicly state that the mid-range goal is to achieve top 25 status, target entrance into CUSA, hire competent staff that WANTS to be here and WIN out of conference games, I will no longer suffer through continued poor recruiting, watching inferior coaching and losing in the worse conference in the country.    mad.gif

    Fire away.

The logical, pragmatic side of me says that you are and adult and entitled to make this decision with regard to your own money and time.

The flame-baiting, dogpiling side of me says you're a "quitter", "not a realy fan" and should come to the games regardless of incompetent coaching because your kids can play in the fun zone and you too might have "fun" watching us get embarrassed.
