  1. Littrell took over the worst team in FBS and immediately made us better by seeing that Mason Fine in HS was still way better than any QB we had on the roster he inherited and who he could get as a transfer. That led to his demise, though, when he couldn’t find a replacement worth a damn. Watching UTSA zoom past us after their Benford hire sucked is just more salt in the wounds, obviously, by MGT above is right. Littrell left a team that should at least win 4 games with what he took over—and that’s being Uber conservative. Morris isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, even if we won 2 or less games, but make no mistake about it, SL left this place light years better than how he found it. He deserved to get fired, no doubt, but what he did in his first three years here is damn near miraculous to do. He has 2 of our 4 9-win seasons since Fry left after 1978…

  2. I remember that one of the Air Raid complaints is that practices aren’t done with a lot of physicality. That the defense isn’t really getting to hit or tackle as hard to protect the offensive guys. This was a known issue under Todd Dodge.

Hope that is not the case here at all.

Funny how Benford keeps getting the ire, when Trilli is also sitting out there.  Benford was awful, but Trilli's era was truly mind blowingly bad...worse than anything else I've experienced as a NT fan.

Benford is just remembered because it was not as far back and we had a tournament team he inherited. Benford nuked the program in one year and it took 5 years away from the momentum JJ spent building it up. Trilli inherited a rather pedestrian situation in the late 90s and showed that a bad YMCA coach could do better than he could.

I'm not convinced that problem is that UNT isn't interested.

It may be the same as people saying that I'm not interested in hot girls just because I'm not dating one.

I think this is much more likely the issue, other than having no decent NIL program. Our history and our apathy is just so easy to sell against for recruiting.

Denton is a great college town, though, and with DFW down the road, it shouldn’t be a problem to get FBS talent here…unless the coaches are the problem, which we won’t know for certain for at least a couple of seasons at least.

I'm not gonna say "I told you so", but I am not a bit surprised at the outcome of this game.  It's one thing to lose a game like this; it's another thing to look like crap in losing like we did.  When Morris introduced as the new head coach, he look so uncomfortable at the podium.  How many sips of water did he take during his introductory speech?  I don't know.  I can tell you that I was disappointed in our recruiting this year.  It's going to be a long, long season.

Agreed. I had us at 4-8 and I’m now hoping that isn’t too hard to reach.

Interesting take from The Monty Show.

As unhappy as they are in the AAC, their best option would probably be to go independent and show the world what they really can do on their own.

I agree with this. Like Stanford, SMU has the cash to be independent. And like BYU did, they’ll fill out a schedule with teams that want an OOC game that is winnable and against a recognizable opponent.  They’d fill it out with series against many regional teams and the service academies and Notre Dame.

You, me, and TCU all know they made that game from phenomenal luck.  They are good but not that good. They are absolutely vulnerable in recruiting now in the B12 sans UT and OU.  They will continue to lose conference prestige and they will need to stay razor sharp to combat that. Having us be a legitimate recruiting competitor is only bad for them.

    This is Weapons Grade Stupid...

    Alabama doesn't have to.

We better start taking parts of the 1970/80s FSU model into some consideration. They played whoever, whenever and started turning heads as they started winning those games as an independent. They forged a place for themselves. I recommend us needing to play the very best G5 teams we can schedule and the very best P5 home and homes we can snag. I wouldn't be heartbroke if we did a roadie P5 game here and there as well vs what is considered winnable programs. But what we're doing is sort of settling into our place in the fake pecking order and putting flyers out and being content with whoever calls back. That's not really the way to do this.

    TCU basically did this, too...

Long story but here is the short version.  I was a student during part of this period. CC Nolen was President from 71-79.  He built the SuperPit, hired Coach Fry, built a new AD office by Fouts, and was very supportive of Athletic growth at NT.

Frank Vandiver was Pres 80-81.  Academics, not pro athletics.  Al Hurley was hired at NT as VP for Admin Affairs in 1980, then named President in 1982, also not pro athletics.

Major College Football was splitting into 1-A and 1-AA.   Part of the criteria to stay in 1-A was 15K attendance over a period and/or a home stadium that could seat 30K, etc and funding 85 scholarships.  NT in the mid-late 70's was splitting home games between Fouts (seated 20K) and the new Texas Stadium (65K), as well as playing UTA and SMU at Texas Stadium.  NT was also Independent at the time, trying to get into a better conference since the MVC was losing football, which meant more road football games and difficulty scheduling minor sports.

When Fry and Nolen left there was a distinct change and diminished priority on Athletics, noticeable on the campus.  I heard funds budgeted for Athletics were instead funneled to Academics by Hurley.  NT could have submitted a stadium waiver to the NCAA saying Texas Stadium was deemed our home stadium (even if shared with Fouts) and we could have remained in 1-A.  But Hurley wanted to cut football expenses, drop to 1-AA and join a 1-AA conference, which we did in 1983.

No new Athletic facilities were built since 1975 until Dr. Pohl transferred the Eagle Point property to Athletics and built the Athletic Center in 2005.   30 years of lost growth in Athletics.  Where would we be now if we had more pro-Athletics Presidents?

Remember, Hurley didn't run into any trouble with this plan, either. No major voices in the fanbase, certainly none in the university's leadership or faculty, and absolutely none from Denton's Citizenry. It was a nuclear bomb to the program. It killed off almost all fans that graduated between the 40's thru the 90's. What has been accomplished since 2000 has been almost amazing considering what we have had to overcome, mindset-wise and from a lack of giving alumni. Where we are today is damn near miraculous when you consider what we have faced and where our university is located, basically surrounded by major universities and old money schools that have all got major media coverage. If we can sustain this same kind of growth going forward AND start getting alumni to care and fund the program at a level that is at least double where we are, then the odds of being a top G5 program are realistic. And when the Power Schools break away to create their NFL-lite level of play, it will be nice playing teams that we are similar to in resources and facilities while giving our football team a chance to win a national title some day.

I count 103 Division 1 schools that don't have football:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_non-football_programs

I count 8 schools that are "name" schools and seven belong to the Big East which really is a basketball only conference.  Yes, a few schools play football, but outside of UConn, they are FCS level.  The eighth is Wichita St.

In Texas, the D1 schools that have basketball but no football are TAMU-CC, UTA and UTRGV.  Want to be coupled with those schools?  Yep, didn't think so.

Your post was which conference would we join and that the AAC would kick us out. All I said was that WSU, who is in the AAC already, says hello to answer your point...

Has nothing to do with us dropping football or joining spares. Just pointing out that someone already in the AAC fits the description of non-football playing member.

There ya go. Start with the hyperbole and bring out the poor wife and kids to use as a shield for someone calling out YOUR shitty behavior. Very manly of you.

And thank you for proving my point. You don't really have any evidence of this reasoning other than the fact that's she's a female who is bad at her job. Do you apply this to any woman who isn't canned at their job for being lackluster?

I'm sure those in power at CUSA are torn between the  duality of watching schools leave early for the Sun Belt vs keeping the first female commissioner in place so as not to hurt her feelings.  I'm sure those at CUSA headquarters who are watching CUSA barely survive as an FBS conference and who badly wanna change direction, are totally avoiding it so as not to risk "looking sexist".

If this is what you think is actually happening, then the people who can fire her are arguably doing a worse job than she is.

It's not rude to call out intolerant, misogynistic thinking. It's rude of you to keep repeating it. You can hate on Judy and her job all you want, but you look like a creep who hates women when you constantly scream how her job is protected by her gender.

This is to the rest of the board.

My complaining about Judy being terrible as a CUSA commissioner has everything to do with her choosing poor teams to join the league, thinking off brand networks to show the league’s games, and for connecting with bowl games that are often ridiculous to be aligned with (Hawaii and Bahamas) are the reasons. Saying that no man is going to lead the charge to replace the first female commissioner of the worst FBS conference for years has everything to do with the MEN not wanting to get the scrutiny/removal that would occur from those upset at a FEMALE being removed, since she’s the first one. That’s on the MEN, not the WOMAN or WOMEN.

I apologize for making anyone think differently of my opinion. As a married man (to a woman) and having a daughter, I wouldn’t ever think less of anyone because of how God created him or her.

Im also gonna plan to leave this place. I’ve become what I always said about UNT90, that this place drives people crazy, and it’s apparent that this is now happened to me. I’ve decided it’s time to find something else to follow, after 32 years. I’ve enjoyed some great times and great people. And I thank Harry for this board—but it’s just got to the point where I spend too much time here being mad at my alma mater and some of its posters here. That’s just not worth it to me anymore.

She does, but this guy thinks she only keeps a job because she's a woman. As if no man has ever spent too long in a position he didn't belong. And that's fine if that's his opinion, but he professes it like some incel who hasn't been touched by a woman in decades.

That’s an insult to my wife and my kids, not to mention my friends and family.

I think you’ll find plenty of content that talked about RV, a male, being here for way too long as the AD. Yet he finally got fired for sucking at his job, rather obviously, but there was no pressure to protect him anymore.

My belief is Judy McLeod hasn’t been fired because nobody in leadership is taking on the task of firing the first female commissioner. That’s a great way to get called out by the media and the university’s female leadership and faculty for being sexist. Never mind that she’s been terrible at her job for CUSA in almost everyone’s opinion.

Believing this doesn’t make me think anyone who thinks differently has some kind of weird sex vibe. That’s rude and should be beneath you if you have any character.
