We would have gone winless in 2015 if the Flightless Birds hadn't been on the schedule.

Just because they were down to their 6th string QB (true story, not exaggerated) and we were at home, that late 4th quarter TD saved us the indignation of probably the worst season of all time. Remember, it included the Portland State debacle that season.

I've said this before, but we need to embrace Frisco.  This makes sense for so many reasons, including it's nearby, we have a campus relationship, it's a growing area, etc.  Do we still have a Cowboy's relationship? If so, that's another reason.  If not, maybe try to restore it.  Denton seems to be a lost cause.

At a minimum, we should be playing a Saturday spring scrimmage in The Star, just to make inroads over in Frisco.

And I’d do the same thing with basketball too—play some spare OOC game over there, just to get people in the UNT Frisco community a chance to see us play.

  3. The portal is the worst part of college football these days…and that’s saying a lot, since there’s strong competition for what ruins the game the most. That said, who knows what will work in terms of the portal to get players here from anywhere…plus, if you are any good or have any talent, some P5 or G5 with cash is gonna buy you away from the current roster, so it comes down to who you can get to come here from another program. Getting to play is usually the biggest factor for a player at the level we play at, but it’s not like people are jumping up and down to play in a stadium that is slightly more than half full on a really good day. So it’s really anyone’s guess as if Morris can really make the transfer portal work for him.

Caponi…the 5th defensive coordinator at North Texas since 2016. Is that normal? I don’t know but it seems that defense is only a theory for the last two coaching staffs.

G5 coordinators are kinds like bank employees. If you are any good, you are moving up really fast, either within the same bank or another bank, or you are getting replaced really quickly because its obvious you cannot handle the job duties in a very competitive industry.

  5. What Dickey took over was a paper house. He basically built up something that was more like cardboard. It held up until Tulsa poured water on it and the entire thing fell apart. Dodge comes in and takes the wet cardboard and sets the thing on fire. McCarney took over as the university decided to build up an actual house for the program because of the embarrassing level in which we lived, only to see that support get set on fire, too. What SL inherited and built was going from ashes into something to actually live/work in. And what Eric Morris appears to be doing so far is douse this place in gasoline.

  6. McCarney remains the first coach we have hired since Bob Tyler to have had FBS head coaching experience. That has really shown, ESPECIALLY with the two worthless HS coaches we hired. Everyone else, except Corky Nelson, has been an OC at FBS levels when they got hired here. Corky, a DC, probably did more with less than anyone.

That’s why I wanted Gary Patterson. A defense first guy in a state where everyone else focuses on offense first. I’d like to think he could do what Hayden Fry did coming here from the other DFW private. But it’s a moot point now.

Coach, here is a suggestion on how to improve tackling.  Don't wait until the season starts to make it a priority.  And don't wait until the season starts to suddenly realize that you may be a little undersized to run your defensive scheme.  He should have been hammering the portal after the Spring if he did not think he had the personnel needed to be competitive, much less successful.

He does not get any points from me by showing up to his weekly press conference giving BS coach speak about taking accountability after your team looked completely unprepared in doing to play two weeks in a row.  The time to take accountability was the day he was hired, not after the season starts.

Hard to imagine the type of dysfunction present on the defensive side of the ball just suddenly appeared in the first game without any warning.

    P.S.

Just looked up his total defense rankings while HC at UIW from 2018-2021.  #111, #115, #95, #95 out of 123 teams.  Looks like he has a history of not knowing how to teach his teams to tackle. Awesome.

Good grief, who, besides UNT, would hire a coach with that kind of performance on the defensive side of the ball?

    We deserve what we get.

I liked Littrell and wanted him to succeed but if he hadn't gotten extremely lucky to have MFine fall into his lap, he would have had virtually no success here, likely no 6+ win seasons (he would have been gone before the 2021 6-7 season).

I give SL all the credit in the world with getting Mason Fine here. He knew Fine was better than anyone he inherited or could bring in. His contacts in the Oklahoma HS ranks helped him get Fine, but SL pulled it off.

Like McCarney, when SL lost that solid QB, it was over…just took a few years to prove it.

That is what makes college basketball so much fun as a fan.   North Texas can win the NIT.  San Diego State can play in the National Championship basketball game.   It's accessible to all 350 D1 programs.

College football knows their brands are surrounding basically about 30 schools. The next 30 are just historically connected to the first 30, although there are a few titles in that group. Their networks want Texas and Alabama, not North Texas and South Alabama.

Them letting North Texas and South Alabama compete for a spot in March Madness and the College World Series for men and women is how they avoid any chance of an antitrust suit. Of course, their grads dominate the judiciary and legislatures, so its not as if they have to worry about that, either.

my  four win season I predicted is endanger of meeting expectations.  Do we have a 90 day probation period for new employees? Morris better wise up and do something about the DC coordinator because his job depends on it.

I predicted 4-8 at the beginning of the season and I would gladly take that RIGHT NOW if we could do that. I'm praying we get to 2 wins at this point.
