I am not a special pleader for Talons (though I am an early 80's Talons alum) but there are usually 5-10 Talons around the Model A and they do a good job of making it a focus point for fans. They have the cannon crew personnel and, I believe, the mascot the Mean Green flaggers. Where they seem to fail is at the basketball games. Maniacs, thus, took the Spirit lead from Talons there. GMG

The Rangers game. UT/OU. Any other game on TV. Kids soccer. Sun in my eyes. Mowing the yard. The game is being held on a Saturday. (Insert excuse here). But, GMG

We are leaning that way, but game day decision. If not, we will probably gather at Cartwrights a couple of hours before the game, and then pre-game Scotch and pickle on the hallowed grounds of DATCU blue lot. (don't believe we will have many in the crew anyway) GMG

When we play them up there, we see a historical and pivotal piece of real estate and stand along side academy of men and women that will proudly serve our country. We also see a legitimately historical college football program. Upgrade. When we play them at home, we will get more opposing fans into DATCU in one game than we do from any five games from the team that is leaving our conference. Upgrade. We got the better brand. With a remaining New Orleans hangover and the distant memories of the BBQ weekend, we expect to serve pistachios and green M&Ms....unless the sainted one comes up with a little something special. But the pre-game Scotch and pickle will always be the main course. GMG

Amidst a bunch of fun and food in New Orleans, a long drive back yesterday and getting wash done to pack before a 4:30 wake up call this am, I haven't had time to read how the board reacted to the Tulane weekend. I did listen to the Mean Green Nation podcast from @aztecskin and @Aldo on the way to the airport this morning. Greatness as always. The stadium was great. All fans were close to the the field, or close enough. The sun seats have a similar effect on that side of the staium as we have at DATCU, but the opposite side was packed. The tailgating was fantastic, and greatly enhanced since the move from the Superdome. We went into the school of Law for the bride to bathroom herself and to get directions to the Alumni tailgate. Met two guys, in residence for a year I believe, at Tulane Law. One was German, the other a Midwesterner who did a tour through Fort Hood during his service in the US Army. He saw the battle flag on my shirt and he remembered seeing a similar flag on his walk to school, noticeable for its colors but also his recall of the Texas flag. He then gave me perfect instructions to the tailgate. We got there in time for shots with the always boisterous and generous (with his liquor) @WilliamMoriart Loved the aggressive play, some successful, some not, half time adjustments, the onside kick and the fourth quarter comeback. The score that got us to 28-28 was sheer ecstasy for a fan who puts all of his emotions into just one team. My wife caught those emotions in a picture I'll save for another day. I also enjoyed our seats above the tunnel our guys walked through after the game. It was good to see the emotion, mostly intense, some tired, some of both that turned to smiles when seeing family but mostly the coach (whoever it was) that slammed his clipboard against the wall on the way out. I want more of that, at least until we break through with a win in a game like this. This was the best I have felt after a loss in a long time. Maybe New Orleans will do that to you but this was a fun game to watch. Tulane fan is just flat out indifferent to NT fans, for the most part. Too busy with homecoming hobnobbing to bother with the hoi polloi, I suspect. One fan in the stadium talked to us after the game, and was quite complimentary of the game we gave them. But over dinner at Venezia and dessert at Angelo Brocato's in the Mid-City, four or five came up to us. Most were probably not Tulane students or alums, not that I am a good judge of that. But all enjoyed the game and called out North Texas for giving Tulane more than they bargained for from a homecoming patsy. It reminded me that New Orleans folks love their sports and their local teams. They watch and they read about it the next day in the Times-Picayune. They remind me of Boston fans. Saints first, but they love Tulane, especially for giving it a good local baseball team to watch. And everyone loves a winner, which Tulane now is. Moral victories aren't much to hang your hat on, but hearing opposing fans of a nationally ranked team show "respect" for North Texas is a start. Thanks to North Texas players, coaches and all associated with providing our school a fun and legitimately exciting October conference game. GMG

Brother, it was windy. But we put up our serving area inside a pop up shade thate we wrapped in a good and large tarp to block the wind. The trees gave shade for the big screen. We had 65 come by, 57 that ate. Board celebrities included @GrayEagle@SilverEagle@SUMG and @FirefightnRick along with a couple of others that I think are on the board. No judging anyone on this board, but only Mr. Fincher partook of the great Senor Smoke's BBQ. 51 of those that came to the tailgate also went to the game. Along with the 10 tickets we own, our tailgate brought along 37 ticket buyers that joined us in Section 110. Not a huge fan of the 11 am start (it required starting up the smoker at 1 am) but it stretched out the party. Some ate around game time. Some of those then came into the game and some of those ate again after. Some of us went to the game and ate after. The once a year tradition will celebrate year 12 next year. I will always prefer a 3 pm game but honestly there were lots of good things about this BBQ, the earliest of the 11. We had more time to talk before , to eat and then to celebrate. Instead of my traditional pregame diet Mountain Dew, three Miller lites and pre-game Scotch, I had four pre-game Scotch's (three Ardbeg and one Glenmorangie) and two post-game Scotch's (both Ardbeg). Most importantly, the Mean Green are 9-2 in the games that Senor Smoke provides the BBQ karma. I challenge you to pick any random 11 games (other than the Hayden Fry years) where NT went 9-2. And we don't pick the "sure win" games. We try to pick a mid-season game, preferably in October, not the first FCS game of the year. And we win most of the time. My seats are on the top row just below "the giant lawn chair " (4:57). I think that is the first time I have seen them when they were empty. I have been to every home game at DATCU/Apogee and there is someone other than my family sitting in my seats when I arrive EVERY game. Discussed my sad tale with at least 50 athletic department humans over the years. None have fixed the problem. Thanks for respecting the seats, Gfed. GMG

I learned how to tailgate late in life, and I am glad I lived long enough to do so. Tell me the game time and we will be out there 3.5 hours before. Six weekends a year, weather be damned, I stop everything I am doing and just enjoy being outside with friends. It is weird...some of my best friends, including immediate family, brothers and family and friends, are my tailgate crew. I see most of them more during football season than the other 8ish months combined. My blood pressure drops, we enjoy good food, talk about current and old times, reminisce on great tailgates and games of the past, speculate on crowd size and scores of the game of the day, have a pre-game peaty Scotch and then the pickle, and just enjoy being alive. Then the game happens. It is the reason we did the above. And six times a year in Denton, a few other times elsewhere, I watch my team. The players and coaches come and go, the team remains. My team. My only team. I treasure every minute of these six days a year. GMG

There was some talk about doing something at the Alumni Pavillion. Right decision to do Eastside. One of the Mean Green's biggest supporters, and a true Denton-raised entrepreneur. GMG

My identifying picture is an homage to that sentiment. And I have used that picture for a long time. Happens to be the weekend we set for our annual BBQ. Early start sucks but are planning a meal for 80, and we will figure out how to make it great again (11th year). That said, we have another excuse for poor game day atmosphere. But ehether we have 10 at our normal tailgate or 100 at the BBQ, our little cohort finds a way to squeeze a little great game day atmosphere into Section 110. Atmosphere is local. I am confident King will do the same at the Mean Green Nation's premier tailgate, and at the game. GMG

So the Scrappy squad members get on the field before the game now? My son (27) and daughter (24) were Jr. MGC members back at Fouts. The experience played a role in my son's decision to go to North Texas. He has never missed a home game in his life. Literally. GMG
