  1. Two Mean Green diehards will be in front of the tv cheering for yall at 6:00am HST! Give'em hell Mean Green!
  2. Dickey is fighting for his life, horns 64 Green 14 I must be smoking something thinking we are going to get 14 but it just popped into my head! GMG
  3. 1. The airfare I dropped 2 years ago hurt, but not nearly as much as the performance on the field. 2. Been there done that. My top places to watch a game 1. LSU (which I ate airfare for last year due to the Hurricane - RIP Citizens of NO and Long Live the Big Easy) 2. Oklahoma - I always enjoy hanging in Norman for the weekend. 3. San Antonio for a wedding the following weekend - I will be listening for that score up in Denton! BEAT SMU! Maybe I have been sitting a palm tree for too long, but this is the least excited I have been for a Mean Green opener - EVER! I can't explain it but don't like it! I have friends in Hawaii traveling to Alabama for the Warrior/Crimson Tide game. They are all geeked and excited and I think, "wow, that use to be me with the Mean Green!" Maybe a Texas size shocker would rejuice me, but that is my reason for not heading to Austin this weekend. I have also had 2 tough years of Mean Green openers - 3rd time a charm? GMG
  4. The campus is not bad, but the surrounding area is kind of dead. Arlington could really revitalize that area with some focused strategy and resources. With a base that large there should be more for the students to do, and then of course there is that sports thing. They need to bring back even D1AA football to create some college atmosphere. GMG
  5. We need beer sales because we need experience. An enhanced gameday experience COULD increase attendance combined with a solid product. If beer were sold inside the stadium and arena, people would look at UNT games as a night out on the town. My thoughts: To Belong - People like to go to places they feel like they belong. Our society condones if not glorifies drinking, so people naturally feel like they belong at a place where they can decide to drink or not. To Have Control - By allowing people to make the decision to drink you are handing them over control. People like control and like to have the choice to drink or not to drink. By not having alcohol sold at sporting events we are "protecting the underage" while depriving the thousands of adults who would like the option to grab a beer and watch a sporting event. The underaged kids are not being protected as much as they are not showing up anyway. We must try something FRESH! We are not competing with local colleges for attendance, we are competing with the Capitalistic machine that is our society. One way for us to differentiate our experience from the pack would be to try to get the non-UNT grad to sample our product. I speak to this firsthand living in Hawaii and by attending UH games. I look at going to a UH basketball or volleyball game as a night out. I don't usually drink anything more than a coffee or coke, but having the option is great! I also notice that the Hawaii crowds are older. Some are alum while others just like to support the local university and to see some D1A action. This notion that all of a sudden 19 and 20 years old would be sucking down masses of alcohol in the stands does not give our future leaders much credit and in my humble opinion is drastically overblown. Let us model Mark Cuban in that he has successfully muscled the Mavericks up to the sports fans table by being different, thinking different, acting different and building a BRAND almost cult like feel to his organization! North Texas can do it but it takes visionary thinking and risks. There will be potholes, but it can be done by taking the road less traveled. GMG
  6. Top 5 since '86 - I needed to witness the top 5 IN PERSON or among the Mean Green fandom 1. Miracle in the desert - you had to experience all the dynamic drama actually occurring in the stands before, during and after the game to really comprehend. 2. Idaho same year - can't believe we are going to a bowl game! Did not really expect to experience that in my lifetime. Watched it at "Ellingtons" or whatever that place is called now on the upper deck with free beers every time we scored. They had to start pouring pitchers because we were scoring so fast! 3. Cincinnati - big time credibility and props from the nation. Felt like we arrived as a D1A program! 4. Texas Tech '97 - Big time unexpected win on the great plains! Drove down to support the team and have fun - a much grander experience than expected! 5. Nevada in the Monsoon - getting that monkey off our back in a crazy rain storm was INCREDIBLE! You couldn't feel your feet, you were drenched, but you were thrilled with the payback! Waiting list - Baylor (a little anti-climatic in that it was so easy!) ULL in the warm rain/fog down on the bayou with some fellow GREEN crazies! Stun the horns! GMG
  7. We are so beaten down by our OOC play that it is understandable if we don't think we can win this game (us fans that is!) However, it sure is refreshing to hear another team out here in Hawaii that opens up against Alabama still have the "you never know...." attitude. Bow fans all over the radio talk about "well if we beat Bama" all of the time. Most likely the Tide will roll the weak little Hawaii D, but the difference in the mentality between most Mean Green fans today and Bow fans today is that at least they still believe in miracles. Hoping to be competitive is a start. I look forward to the day when we have faith again! Somewhere in there I still do. Beat Texas! GO MEAN GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. Watch your back TCU. The second you start messing with the MWC powers that be, not so good things begin to happen to your program. When TCU, SMU and Rice started meddling around in the WAC 16 trying to muscle power away eastward, the Mountain folks began formulating their plan to break away. I am not saying they will kick TCU to the curb, but they sure didn't plan on TCU coming in so strong. They don't like it and there will be ramifications somewhere down the line - check the calls in both of those games. GMG
  9. Okay, the topic description is a no brainer. All of our attendances need to go up in '06 and that should happen with some OOC wins. The Sports Animal here in Hawaii was talking WAC attendance this morning. He stated that only 3 have decent attendance: Fresno 39,000 Hawaii 33,000 Boise 30,000 He even commented that all the WAC numbers are seats issues, not butts in seats. He said the BSU number should be concerning, because 30,000 with 10-2 type seasons and WAC crowns or shares of crowns since joining might not hold in a 7-5 year. His trivia question was "Who has the next best attendance AFTER Boise?" The answer is La Tech at 16,000. Nevada, Utah State and NMSU were at 12,000 while I believe Idaho was around 10,000. So looking at our programs from top to bottom we definitely have some work to do, but I do like the fact that our attendance at North Texas is pretty legit and based on butts in seats. More importantly it has inched in the right direction which is what I hope for the entire league this fall. GMG
  10. North Texas North Texas North Texas Next: Way below - Lobo Hoops Baby! The Pit with 17,000 strong howling sucked me in. Next: MWC: Moved to NM when the old WAC was in tact and still love to follow almost all of MWC teams - exception TCU and SDSU Next: UTEP: Went to a game between the Miners and Aggies with 52,000 strong in the Sun Bowl - the Miners were 3-0 and the Aggies were 2-1 I believe - Brother was in school there at the the time and singing "Ole, Ole, Ole" and jumping around with my peeps was FUN. Next: Hawaii Mens Volleyball - believe it, it is a real sport out here. I could probably get into Woman's Volleyball because the crowds get crazy (7,000 strong) on most nights - but NO WAY (The Woman's Volleyball season is the exact same as college football - forget about it!) The Men's team plays in the spring during college hoops. So those games with beer and nachos in hand are pretty fun. Plus they play in a different league with UCLA, USC, BYU, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara...No other Hawaii team really does it for me. Next: Just about any Pac 10 football - love the late night games in Oregon with the fog. Next: In Texas - Go Texas Fightin Aggies! Sister is an Ag when Texas sucked and the Aggies had their way. Watched several battles in person back in the day. My how the maroon has struggled this past decade. In the END - Like Rick - North Texas is the only team that really matters, and I do dawn my Mean Green gear at almost all of these events! Period. In Texas
  11. I was watching Glory Road last night and thought about the whole North Texas versus Texas State debate that I lived through back in the 80's. I am glad we kept North in our name. It just makes sense to me in the big picture, especially looking back at our rich past. North followed us all along and I am glad we are still North Texas today. By the way, great movie! Way to go Texas Western/UTEP. GMG
  12. Yep, I watched all the clips too - boy am I craving football! GMG
  13. I noticed that we are on at 11:00am in Austin. Is this going to be a TV game? I want to plan any trips around those games I can't get on TV or the Internet. GMG
  14. The WAC has settled down because the teams that wanted to be in there, got there. The FSU's and Hawaii's of the world are tired of complaining. CUSA is on shaky ground because people want out. Crazy how the WAC has become the second most stable conference maybe third one out there. MWC WAC or MAC SBC - no where to go CUSA - several unhappy members - the new WAC GMG
  15. Are we anywhere near to getting a second bowl? We need to keep pace with the WAC bowl situation since we are having trouble doing it with top 25 teams. GMG
  16. Who were your final four? I have: Iowa Pittsburgh UCONN Arizona Championship game - Zona and Iowa Champion - Arizona Wildacts! Terrible year but the Cats have a way of playing well at the right time!
  17. I feel the pride. Great job and congratulations! GMG
  18. Makes perfect sense - the MWC and WAC should play a bowl game with the natural rivalries. ABQ would be a great place for a bowl game. Santa Fe and ABQ during the holidays with all the luminarios on top of the buildings - completely enchanting - gosh I want my cabin out there! GMG
  19. Well it has'nt even been 6 months since Katrina. I am not sure any place could undergo that type of event and come back easily, much less a place like NO. We have such an appetite for instantaneous fixes in this country. Even New York wasn't the same the following year ~ this is an entire city. I am so glad to be going back to New Orleans on business in a couple of weeks. I just want to give back somehow someway, even in the form of some business to the place that I love and have so many fond memories of. Enjoy Mardi Gras everyone and don't worry - the spirit of that city will carry on - differently, but it will live on! All will be more back in order come December: Hopefully that means the Mean Green will once again return to true NOB form! GMG
  20. Well that is one failsafe way to keep the economy moving! Instill the FEAR! Flame the FEAR! GMG
  21. I was at UTA for a graduation last May and the campus was nice. My Sister did her grad work there so that was my second visit to UTA. I never associated the Mavericks with red, even athletically. I always remembered them blue and white. The new logo is sharp and professional. I differ with some posters on the orange. I like it! I think the orange trim makes the logo look similar to UTEP which I like. I think the Miners sport some cool gear and use the pic effectively in their marketing efforts. The blue orange combo is not really present in the North Texas area so I say go for it! GMG
  22. I didn't watch too much Seahawk ball this past fall, but in the Superbowl the Seahawk fans did something clever. Early in the game when the Seahawks were able to stop Steeltown on their drives, they would begin chanting Seahawks Seahawks Seahawks as the punter lined up to kick the ball away. I know I am easily amused, but I thought that was kind of cool. It was a way to dent the overly partisan terrible towel crowd. So how about this fall as the smu kicker lines up to kick the ball to us we begin the chant of Eagles Eagles Eagles or Mean Green Mean Green Mean Green. If we are all on the same page it would be a way to make some noise for the D and get some fans off the bench. Aloha! Go Mean Green!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. I am a Texan to the core, but I am glad it was my friend I was putting on a plane heading back to the orange state. It would be disgusting to live in the land of the bandwagon this year. It's my state but it ain't my team! GMG
  24. ASU Fan, I too am a big SBC fan. I am a rarity in that respect but I believe this league has the opportunity to grow into something special. I know our eventual goal is CUSA and I would like us to accept an invite if ever extended; however, I can enjoy the present. I started following the Mean Green feverishly in '86, so these last few years have been gravy. Crazy as it sounds those rivalries with Arkie State, NLU, SFA, SHSU and SWT were great back in the day. I am glad we have still been able to preserve some of those today. We need to cross paths with NMSU again in the future. I have lived in MWC and WAC country for some time now. I have spent time in CUSA country as well. The SBC for all it's warts is not as horrific as it appears to be. We are a young league with some programs about to make it over the mountain. With every MTSU win over Vandy, Troy win over Mizzou and Arkie State near miss with Southern Miss, I smile. I live in Hawaii and if not for the SBC people would really have no idea who it is I follow. Those 4 bowl appearances have given us pub sea to shining sea, as will your appearance this year and future winning seasons. I think you beat the Green again this year. I will root like heck for UNT, but Jonesboro has been a house of fear for even good Mean Green squads of days gone by. The race for New Orleans should be fun this fall. GMG
