  1. So..the guys who have been here three or four years waiting to start, they haven't "bought in" yet? Odd. If so, here's to hoping Mac recruits a class full of kids who buy in from the first day they set foot on campus. Now, coach, explain the experienced offensive line not being able to block this year to us.
  2. ...if you have receivers who can run routes properly and get open. We don't have much of that, and haven't for well over a decade - maybe two or three. Right now, we have a bevy of receivers who don't get open and three quarterbacks who "distribute" the ball to opposing defenses via interceptions and fumbles.
  3. We never have more than one legitimate receiving threat at a time.
  4. West Virginia also has some credible football history. That helps.
  5. Again, it's a shame what's happened to Juarez. When I was a kid, we lived in El Paso for a year. My dad would take us there a lot. He'd have lunch there, buy cigarettes, and whatnot. Cheap and safe. Friendly people. Good days, back then. Crazy. Mexico ate itself a long time ago, though. America isn't too far behind it. Maybe a couple to three decades. Places like Detroit are already there.
  6. By the way, if you like car/driving movies, nothing beats the James Taylor/Dennis Wilson flick "Two Lane Blacktop."
  7. My kids love it. Tempted to try and make it, but will fight a wife-battle to do it. She has a nephew at SFA and wants us to go visit him that weekend. Either way, there will be better scenery than around here, I suppose - trees or mountains, trees or mountains. And, oddly enough, I love the drive to El Paso. Don't know why, but long drives out west have never bothered me.
  8. I thought that Canales was a Mormon and a Mexican. That said, I wonder why he can't find a QB out west from one of those Tongan JUCOs like Snow JC in Utah. I'd also try to find a QB in the most football talent-rich state in the union: Florida.
  9. I like the way Derek Thompson played on the field and carried himself off the field. First, despite having just one go-to guy for the entirety of his career, he became UNT's greatest I-A/FBS quarterback. Second, he never publicly complained on his twitter account or his facebook. I miss Derek Thompson as our quarterback. What a mountain we have to climb to find another one like him...even one worthy enough to stand in his legacy's awesome shadow. These interception-touchdown throwers on the 2014 roster...they're giving me the blues. They'll never lead us to bowl victories or break any records. Sorry to be so truthful. They all need to transfer out to the Texas A&M-Commerces, Sam Houston States, and Sul Rosses or the football world. I'd wager McMurry and Hardin Simmons will be in need of a quarterback or two in 2015. I'd donate our whole rosterful except Means.
  10. No, everyone with a brain in his head misses DT. Everyone else keeps replaying the Nicholls State game in their mind.
  11. Good. We don't need high school coaches who oversell their lazy QBs.
  12. Mac also has to worry about his job beyond MiniMac's eligibility. I don't think Greer, Williams, or McNulty are FBS material, so I think the competition is open in the spring. I'd cut Greer and Williams loose art the end of the year by not renewing their scholarships. I'd pull McNulty's as well since he has been here for four years. He should be getting his degree and voluntarily hanging up his cleats.
  13. Are you talking about the ones who said that during the Dodge Era we had QBs who would win one for ya? Which of the five wins was he talking about?
  14. Yes. I'm counting on it as a win - for UTEP! Too bad Juarez isn't safe to visit any longer. It would give at least some incentive to go out there. Carlsbad Caverns?
  15. I doubt it. Means can't be worse than those three, and we'll likely sign one or two others. No way Mac goes into December/January believing he has what he needs and QB on the roster either in terms of the starter or depth. Scholarships are only year grants. It time for McCarney to not renew a couple or three. And if you think that's harsh, consider...students on academic scholarship must maintain a certain GPA to keep their academic scholarships. So, why should athletes who repeatedly prove that they can't cut it at this level continue to get free rides? Cut them lose and let them transfer to FCS or DII schools better suited for the talent levels.
  16. We will have a new QB whose name isn't Greer, Williams, or McNulty.
  17. That tends to happen when you lose the best QB in the program's history...plus, one of the best tacklers...plus, one of the best receivers/returners...plus, six of the seven front seven...plus, a pretty solid safety...plus, one of the Top 10 running backs in school history. We do have a good kicker, though! That's an upgrade from last year! Anyway, I'll just say that the only real head scratcher for me is the offensive line. They have fallen completely off the map. So, much for experience.
  18. The reason the Big 12 won't take Houston or SMU is that they don't need them. Big 12 already is more of a sell in those media markets than SMU or Houston.
  19. I'm talking about the pity party people had here for Berglund, and the one they are having now for Dajon. This fan base is amazing - they clamor for QBs who show no inclination whatsoever to learn the playbook and the position. They live in the dream world were "athletic" quarterbacks just pull the ball down and run 80 yards. It's fine against Nicholls State. But, we don't play Nicholls State 12 times a season. So, get used to having a QB who isn't spotting the opposition 21 points a game and be happy. Sure, it won't be as exciting watching opposing DBs and LBs running back fumbles and interceptions. But, it gives us a better opportunity to win...which I thought was the object of football and other sports.
