  1. Spavital might be worth talking to, but it is kind of alarming that his offense has gotten worse with two 5* QBs at the helm, in Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray.

They're going to keep firing coordinators until the actual problem takes the USC job or moves to the NFL.

  2. Who was the guy that sold Murray (among others) on going to A&M in the first place?

    Kyler Murray's Rivals page

Spavital is the guy you're talking about bolded above.  He's the best recruiter out of anyone who has been mentioned on gmg.com.

    He's not coming here.

I don't care if he's not coming here, I never advocated Spavital coming here, I just said I'd like a younger guy who can recruit. As I understand it, there's more to college football than recruiting, so I'd obviously like him to be able to coach, too.

  3. Murray should have gone to UT. With a bit of effort, he'd have likely been the starter ever year he was there. Baseball was another big consideration for Murray. I understand UT has a baseball program, too?

Regardless, I think you see Murray go pro in baseball sooner rather than later.

As for Spavital, I too will pass on what he's selling.

Don't overthink this hire. Go get a good, young coordinator that has energy and can sell the dream. All it takes is one really good class with a couple big-name recruits to turn this ship around.

  4. No, that made national news.

So do tragedies of every kind, every day.

Reality: fewer and further between were folks outside of DFW thought this was a good hire. If you want to argue semantics, sure it was both a splash and a bad hire: the two are not mutually exclusive. I used "splash" hire with the assumption it would also be a "good" hire. I assumed people would grant the benefit of the doubt on that. Perhaps not.

Not everyone knows or cares about everything going on within the boundaries of DFW. NT has done a good job the past decade distancing itself from the "leading university of the DFW area" stuff, thinking more broadly and universally. It would do well to follow suit with athletics. Todd Dodge was a local hero -- not a good "splash" hire.

  5. which I contend still wasn't a mistake so much as it was to allow him to fill his staff with high school coaches.

he's 34...and already OC at a top 5 school, so clearly he's ambitious...he'd definitely view UNT as a stepping stone (rightly), so I think we'd see a level of dedication we've never seen and a pragmatic approach to put experienced minds around him.

    All fair points.

I guess I'd just like to see us make a splash hire for once. A hire that says "we're going to take this seriously." But I don't know what that looks like and I'm a dreamer by trade.

If we take the young coordinator route, I'd feel more comfortable with Major Applewhite than Sonny Cumbie. Applewhite has been a full time coach since 2005, while Cumbie has only been coaching since 2011. I feel Applewhite would be able to put together a better staff and has much more experience on the recruiting trail.

I'd be intrigued by this, too.

  6. Cumbie is 34 Meacham is 50.  They are co offensive coordinators. I believe Cumbie is the QB coach and Meacham does inside receivers.

And together, they've turned TCU into a Top-5 team in 2015. Gary Patterson knows that. They're not going to leave unless it's for a better opportunity and more pay -- and there's no reason to think TCU can't match a coordinator's pay with anything we want to pay a head coach.

Cumbie's been a great addition as an offensive mind. But bringing him in as a Head Coach at 34 years of age is probably as big a stretch as hiring a legendary HS football coach.

  7. He has not done a good job recruiting, particularly with QB recruiting (possibly limited by Mccarney, but still a poor job).

This is my #1 concern with retaining him. I've heard a lot of things about how poorly this staff has done with respects to recruitment. It's my assumption that it is directly related to the head coach.

The next coach needs to be a home-run hire. Or at least a stand-up triple. We can't keep doing this every few years. If at the end of the day, Canales is the best option, so be it. I suspect that won't be the case.
