What it all boils down to for me is that districts are asking voters to approve stadiums that are way fancier than they need to be instead of investing in things the districts need to actually improve education, and in today’s world safety, for students.

No, districts cannot do that. The TXLEG passed a law requiring stadiums and athletic facilities to be split out into separate bond issues. No more rolling it all together and saying if you want schools with working wifi, plumbing and air conditioning you must also pay for a stadium.

Also, most of the safety issues are required to be addressed now. I know Coppell has had to upgrade locks, is adding new fencing, and adding bullet-resistant film to all windows. Most was required to be in place before school started in September.

NO WAY anyone could build DATCU Stadium with 31,000 seats, concrete and a full facade, club level and suite level, today for $100M.   We got a steal back then.  Construction costs now have skyrocketed.  The south endzone expansion at Smut is over $100M by itself, but it does include locker rooms and coaches offices.   Similar endzone facility being built at Texas Tech is costing $220M.

USF's new proposed on-campus stadium will seat 35K and is expected to cost $340M.  SDSU's new stadium opened last year, also seats 35,000 and cost $310M.

You are absolutely right! Construction material costs have gone up exponentially. Home builders say it's a challenge to get workers without paying bonuses. At the time DATCU was built, I remember multiple news articles on NT getting an incredible deal for the stadium.

Permian has had a book, movie, and tv show made about their football team and even they don't spend this kind of money on a stadium.

Odessa has not had anywhere near the growth Prosper has. There are new subdivisions in Prosper ISD that more than triple the number of homes in Odessa and aren't built yet. And developers are buying still more land for still more homes! They are not building the stadium for the students they have today - they are building for what they will have in five to seven years!

It is unless your team gets relegated and the loss of income forces selling off the stars and then you suck for real and go down another level. 24 Premier league teams relegated ended up falling two steps, seven of those going down three steps, and one going down four steps. Very common for relegated teams to end up going into administration (bankruptcy court) to reorganize their finances. Some smaller clubs have been folded, one relocated. Portsmouth FC barely escaped being folded.

It sounds as though relegation has the same effect that the NCAA death penalty had on SMU. I can’t imagine many, if any, schools voting for it.

Seems very relevant to football since this position is responsible for fundraising, licensing, sponsorships, ticket sales, etc.

And since NIL is outside of the university, I don’t see what it has to do with this position.

You are correct on every point. In the age of NIL, this position is more important than ever as NIL tends to pull money away from the university.

+ varies a lot. Many places it is controlled but the home school,  but but not all. And the school's level of spending also varies as some schools bring in a professional crew and truck while others use all students with a church broadcast level of equipment.

  7. Wow, it's a very interesting article. I don't believe it's behind a paywall. If you ever watch sports on TV, you should read this article. But, I'll throw out a few points from the article to pique your interest:

    1. In the last nine years, ESPN has gone from 100 million households to just 55 million without Charter/Spectrum. That's about half of their subscription fees and a huge drop in ad revenue.

    2. Charter/Spectrum have actually done the math - they make MORE money on the internet than on cable TV bundles. In past carriage disputes, ESPN could tell Charter/Spectrum customers to go find another provider like Fubo or YouTubeTV. This time, Charter/Spectrum are telling their own customers to go get a sports streaming service since Charter/Spectrum will actually net MORE money that way.

    3. While streaming is coming, so far it has NOT been a money maker. In public filings, it turns out ESPN has so far lost $11 BILLION on streaming.

Read the article and get your popcorn to watch the fight. Because at some point, most people will no longer watch very many live games!

16 is a better conference number than 13.

Only if the money is a LOT better. As the American's pursuit of Wazzu and OSU showed, it was not enough to make it worth adding them to our conference. With 13 or 14, you don't have to have divisions, but by 16 you do. And with divisions, you have a strong chance you won't have the two strongest teams from your conference in the title game which cuts your chances for one of those coveted CFP slots.

The Mountain has never, ever been a conference that chased markets; that was CUSA and then to a certain degree the American.

ESPN has made it pretty clear they will give a bit of a bump, but not enough to even cover the extra travel costs. Without a lot of money that I don't see coming in, I don't see any reason for anyone in the American to jump.

Sadly logic and what is reasonable don't seem to be in play as much when it comes to conference realignment.

But there is a logic - the pursuit of money!

There is a pursuit of more money in all but 1 of the moves to the B1G, Big XII, and ACC. And in that one, SMU hopes to leverage their current cash into staying P4 after the next big consolidation.

An AAC team moving to the Mountain will create LESS money per team while doing nothing to increase the chances of becoming the G5 that gets into the playoffs. That's why a raid by the Mountain on the America is very unlikely.

Them going to mountain will only strengthen mountain who in turn will poach AAC no?

Why would you think the Mountain is going to poach the AAC? Or why anyone from the AAC would want to jump the Mountain?

If the MWC adds Wazzu and OSU, they are at 13 members. After SMU leaves the AAC is at 13. Adding schools divides the pie into smaller pieces unless you add a school that has a strong enough national draw to increase the size of the money pool more than the loss in dividing it more ways. I don't think anyone in either conference does that.

Then, you have several MWC members who have repeatedly said they do NOT want to expand the conference into the Central time zone unless they can get the "right" schools. Those mentioned were Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. Colorado State, AF, Wyoming, and at least one more don't want to have a conference mate east of the Rockies.

Look at it the other way - who from the AAC is going to want to go to the MWC? Yes, a lot would want to have gone to the old PAC 12, but that's NOT who they would be joining. The MWC is a lateral move at best with increased costs that would NOT be offset by increased TV revenue.

I just don't see a real reason for anyone in the American to jump to the Mountain!

  11. I'm sure you're all aware ESPN wasn't available on the 2nd largest cable provider this weekend. These disputes have happened before, but both sides say this time it's more than just carriage rights fees. Charter Spectrum wants to include all the Disney streaming services - Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu as part of its packages. Disney is saying no way.

Disney is using this as a chance to push Hulu+Live TV as an alternative to cable. CEO Bob Iger has been prepping a full ESPN streaming service that will almost certainly be cheaper than cable TV with ESPN. He has also talked with increasing frequency of Disney selling their old cable TV assets - ABC and FX - as they are quickly turning into something similar to landline telephones.

This is all against a backdrop of viewers watching streaming services nearly 2 to 1 over cable. Live sports like ESPN are the last reason people have for keeping cable TV. If (when) Disney starts the ESPN streaming service, expect a flood of cable cutting that could eventually make many old-style cable systems unsustainable.

Or, Charter Spectrum could raise everyone's rates $8/month for basic and proportionately more for the upper tiers and pay Disney enough to hold off a little longer.

In any case, everyone should get ready to watch your sports on streaming platforms because a some point it IS going to be the only option.
