  1. From what I've read in the paper and heard on the radio, Chow would have preferred Leinart, but he doesn't have final say.
  2. Hopefully our defense will think it is!
  3. I don’t think “Where’s the zip?” would have gotten as famous as “Where’s the beef?”
  4. Just once before. And he came back out of retirement within just a few months.
  5. Back when SMU got the death penalty, there was a proposal in Texas to allow Universities to sue the individuals whose actions caused a University to get in trouble with the NCAA. Governor Clements - who certainly knew about the payments to the athletes, and might have been partially funding it - was in FAVOR of the law! He said it would have made it much easier to say “No” to others if such a law was in place. But, it died in legislative committee.
  6. I didn’t think it would be possible for me to feel sympathetic toward SC. But from what has come out so far, I don’t see how University did anything wrong. Yet, they are the one’s who will feel the NCAA’s wrath. I suppose Universities should ask all scholarship athletes if their parents have moved each semester and who is paying the mortgage! I also have to admit I’m like the author of the article - I only had the vaguest idea about the concept of “mortgage” when I was in college.
  7. The idea of lowering the field, removing the track and adding more rows of seats has been suggested. But, I think there was some kind of engineering problem that caused the idea to be rejected. I can’t remember the details right now, but it has been discussed by more than just those on this board.
  8. No the schedule is not completed yet. It won’t be for a while. CSTV is a new network that is carrying a lot of games. The Mtn West conference signed a deal with them for a lot of bucks and NO MID-WEEK games! Unfortunately, CSTV is not yet available on the main cable provider in Las Vegas or San Diego - Cox Cable I believe. I can get it on Dish Network and I know it’s available on DirectTV as well.
  9. Jeff Saragin has repeatedly said you can NOT use his poll for overall rankings between 1A and 1AA because there is not enough games played between the two groups. The his system is of limited usefulness in comparing a single 1A team to a single 1AA team if the two are playing. So suggesting Appalachian State is ahead of 48 1A teams is simply not accurate. And, if you remember back in 78, there were two Top 20 polls. No one did a Top 25 till after CNN was started in the 80s. The AP ran a poll of sports writers. UPI ran a poll of coaches in which Hayden got to vote the year we were ranked. More coaches than just Hayden had to vote for us to get the ranking we had. But if Hayden had voted us number 2 or 3 - any team that go a number 1 vote was listed as getting such a vote - then under “others receiving votes” we would have shown up as getting 18 or 19 votes under the old system. The next week, when we would win, there would be a reason to start thinking about NT and vote for us. When enough did, we were ranked by the coaches. We were never ranked by the sports writers.
  10. Just one casing - I understand there are thousands down there!
  11. I thought Legion Field was one step short of condemned. Literally parts of the stands are falling off!
  12. What would kill football is not the level of competition of being WACy. It would be MUCH higher travel costs, MUCH less publicity and realistic access to only one bowl in Boise, Idaho. All of those negative would combine to hurt if not kill any chances of a CUSA invite. And all of those negative are well documented from lwhen we turned down the WAC. The latest on the Albuquerque Bowl is being effected by the potential folding of the Houston Bowl. If Houston doesn't come up with the cash to pay the teams from last year, they are going to be suspended by the NCAA. If Houston goes way, look for Albuquerque to become a Big 12-MWC bowl. And while some of the are pretty WACy, the schools there now are solidly against trying an Eastern Wac again. We are much better off trying to build up the Sunbelt than going WACy.
  13. But, it is true that Darrell has one more conference championships that Mack Brown. It still doesn't mean Mack isn't exagerating his quarterback situation.
  14. As has been repeatedly proven, going Wacy would kill football at NT. So, there would NEVER be a CUSA invite if we did something that stupid. I suppose the WAC has "tie-ins" with the Pac-10 in the same vein as the SBC has "tie-ins" with the Big 12. The MWC has cut the number of bowls they will play with the WAC. As for "more bowls than the SBC will ever have," they have two. One of the two has said it will fold unless Hawaii is the host team most years. After the 2004 season, the SBC also got two bowl bids.
  15. In fairness, GreyEagleOne has been a fan forever. Anyone who still doubts NT is far better off in the SBC must not have read the Dallas Morning News from earlier this week. At the top of the sports section was a little blurb that read if you want to see the scores from either the Rangers or the Mavericks, go to the website as they were played on the West Cost and we won't print the scores till tomorrow. Now, according to the DMN, their "click through rate" is about 1%. As for TV coverage, the local stations didn't even have anything about the games the next day as it was then "old news." And those are pro teams, they aren't going to do that much for a mere college! Hawaii has stated repeatedly their bowl is only for the University of Hawaii and will fold, just like the Silicon Valley Bowl, if Hawaii is not in it at least 2 out of every 3 years. The WAC's promise of a bowl for it's top two teams is getting much harder to keep, unless Hawaii is one of the top two teams every year. The old Big West was our only choice, even if it was a bad choice. The Sunbelt is a much better fit for a team in the Central Time Zone.
  16. Interesting to see we're in the same range as Memphis, Okie State, Washington, Michigan State, Northwestern, Missouri, Stanford and Nevada. That's not bad company.
  17. Where to start. Firstly, I would be stunned if George got the Cowboy job this time around. He's good and might grow into the job, but he's not ready yet. "Color man" for the Cowboys is almost never an ex-jock. Look back at the announcing teams, not counting the temporary ones. Pay-by-pay/analysis Brad Sham/Babe Laufenberg Brad Sham/Dale Hansen Vern Lundquist/Brad Sham Bill Mercer/Vern Lundquist Bill Mercer/Blackie Sherod You'll notice it was a top radio guy paired with a TV announcer, until Babe. And Babe became a TV guy shortly after he got the job. Look for a TV guy. I doubt Hansen is coming back, but with Jerry Jones you never say never! And, Brent would be a great announcer for the Mean Green.
  18. Watch out Rick! Tell her football has three periods!
  19. I know that for OU, Alabama, Auburn and LSU, the majority who attend games - over 60% - are NOT alums of the various schools.
  20. It takes care of the “Can’t travel during the week” excuse. And, a Friday won’t interfere with the NFL which wants the option on stadiums of both Saturday and Sunday that time of year.
  21. While I think I probably went to at least one game earlier in the year, the first game I remember was Homecoming ’76 in the snow against Florida State. Snow made a big impression on a guy from the Rio Grande Valley!
  22. Texas Hall is an awful place to play! One of the best decisions made in the basketball was to refuse to play there. It is simply too dangerous!
