  1. Unless you simply get lucky, most head football coaches at the D1 level take a minimum of two years to have a winning record. That is, they don't have a winning record until their 3rd year!
  2. With Jerry Jones doing the hiring, you could be right. The current Color Analyst seems to have a hard time completing a complete sentence on the air without stumbling. George is certainly better than that clown. George is fine for the level at which we are currently at.
  3. SLC was a very, very good program before Dodge arrived. He and a lot of parents who wanted their kids to play at a winning program arrived at the same time. SLC will be a great program after Dodge is gone. While he helped them get a bit better than they would have without him, they would have won many state championships no matter if he was the coach or not. A co-worker has a grand kid who is all of 5. The kid went out for pee-wee football in Southlake. Fathers of the other kids all had on shirts that read "The tradition starts right here!" The same Dads were yelling at their 5 year olds for not hitting other kids hard enough. It is the people that have the kids - not necessarily the coach. The coach leads, but the others make it possible.
  4. I still don't know why everyone is so down on RV hiring a successful person he knows. Why should it matter if he knows them if they are successful?
  5. What coaching experience does MJ have that makes anyone think he is a D1 head coach? Todd Dodge has been a successful high school head coach, but a lot of us question HIS experience to be a D1 head coach since the tiny amount of college experience he had was over a decade ago. A bad coaching hire can hurt your program for years, if not decades.
  6. One thing that concerns me... There are maybe 500 people who read this board. There are about 200,000 who heard the interview. And to anyone not closely connected to the school, we went to the Sun bowl in 1959. We don't go back to a bowl till DD is here and go to 4 in a row. We win 27-ish (I forget the exact number) conference games in a row. We are best known for low fan support. We then have one bad season and a second bad half season and he's fired. As the other guy on the Gallow show pointed out, if I'm interviewing, I want to know exactly what is expected of me! I an not saying it was not time for DD to go. But, if we're not even going to let the guy get his own recruits as at least red-shirt sophmores - that's three years - why would a top coach want to come here? I was very, very impressed with DD's self control when given a LOT of opportunities to vent.
  7. Just when someone suggested George might be the next Cowboy’s play by play guy. He doesn’t have the background yet. Bill’s background is much deeper. Bill still goes to Round Rock to do minor league baseball games. It’s pro game background that George is lacking. I think George is doing just fine for us at our level.
  8. We’ve been there and done that with the high school coach with state championships! Yes, Dodge has a tiny amount of college assistant experience. But, it was many years ago and under Dennis Parker, our failed high school coaching experiment.
  9. You are quite right - it’s not an excuse, but a fact. While I’m sure we will see immediate improvement in discipline, I’m not sure that will translate into a significant number of extra wins. And the sad, but very true fact is it takes most coaches till their first recruiting class is in their redshirt sophomore year to significantly increase the number of wins with a team. Sometime you get lucky and catch lightning in a bottle, but mostly it takes three long hard years for the fans.
  10. Not likely! He doesn’t have the resume yet. Doing NT play by play doesn’t get him there. UT play by play might - Craig Way is great. And don’t forget Dave Barnet is out there. Bill Mercer was the voice of the Cowboys, Rangers and White Sox. And then the Mean Green and don’t forget the wrestling! George has NT plus some high school games on his resume. And friends on the RTF staff assure me that there was a lot of Bill Mercer character assassination going on before the change was made. It needed to be made, but the way it was done was very bad. But, I’m told George was not leading the charge, but he was significant part of it.
  11. Yes, but a few observations which are spot on, too. I found it funny that some guy thought that RV’s last name is Villareal he was Hispanic and didn’t know football. There’s a well informed opinion!
  12. Didn’t a committee get us Bob Tyler as well?
  13. Since neither of them were here before when we hired a HC, it CAN’T be business as usual!
  14. Of course, prospective donors will know who he is and be more likely to talk to him if they know him from the broadcasts.
  15. Never challenge “worse.” It can ALWAYS get worse.
  16. I understand The Tomato is going to always keep 8 slices in the box.
  17. This that thick or thin crust? Plus, you need to compare the same number of toppings.
  18. Is anyone even slightly surprised a Miami player is shot? They seem to have a long running gang problem with the football team at the school. FIU suspended players for the year, but the President of UM won’t do anything that might cost them a game! A pity the NCAA won’t do anything about this “lack of institutional control!”
  19. Let’s just kill this thread! Going WACy would mean much higher travel costs which are NOT offset by higher payouts as LaTech is finding out. Playing late games on the West Coast means less coverage in Texas as Rice, TCU and SMU found out. TCU managed to get the Mountain West to not give them more than a specific number of late starts - something the WACy people have already said they won’t do. All of this discussed ad nauseam. Let’s just move on and not go WACy.
  20. They don’t play football. And, the WAC conference by-laws don’t allow football only schools either. Let’s just not go WACy.
  21. As I wrote, “Occasionally, a new coach can come in and win with the old players who were not preforming well.” Oklahoma won a National Championship. But far more often the results are like NMSU or Idaho. You should not count on getting lucky, but expect some hard work building.
  22. Back in the 70s they had an origination call Students Older Than Average. I don’t know if it’s still around. Maybe all the members retired.
  23. Next year is not likely to yield a lot of wins even with a new coach. Occasionally, a new coach can come in and win with the old players who were not preforming well. That is the exception, most certainly NOT the rule. Usually, you need to wait till his recruits are red-shirt sophmores and juniors to start to see a major difference. That’s three to four years of more loses. But, at least you have hope at that point!
