  1. Mean Green defense will try and stop the Buick on September 12th! I see 3rd down draws coming ... 😁
  2. This question deserves it's own thread.
  3. Here's my rationale on Chris Petersen: Chris Petersen just quit his job at Washington citing too much stress and anxiety associated with the job. North Texas needs to present him with a job package tailor-made to his present circumstances. North Texas could offer him full control of the offense with little stress associated with the job. He would not have to deal with the boosters, university officials, business people, and other hangers-on that inevitably come along with big-time college football jobs. All he has to do is be the offensive guru. Would he make as much money as being the head coach at Washington? No, of course not. But he also wouldn't have to deal with a lot of the problems.
  4. That's Mr. Safeway Bowl himself, former UNT head coach Matt Simon.
  5. Get Chris Petersen on the phone. In all likelihood it wouldn't happen. But give it a shot.
  6. Since we're all pissing in the breeze on this thread, I'll throw a name, or two, out there. What about hiring the Pelini brothers, Bo and Carl, as co-defensive coordinators? REACT!!
  7. 1. Fouts Field 2. Apogee Stadium 3. Texas Stadium 4. Amon-Carter Stadium (TCU) Whatever happened to Hiram Gonzalez? 5. Ford Field (SMU) Daniel Meager is still throwing touchdown passes. 6. Floyd Casey Stadium (Baylor) 7. Darrell K. Royal Stadium (Texas) 8. Malone Stadium (Louisiana-Monroe) 9. The Superdome All four bowl games (2001-2004) 10. Indian Stadium (Arkansas State) 11. Nile Kinnick Stadium (Iowa) 12. Bill Snyder Family Stadium (Kansas State) 13. Gaylord Family Stadium (Oklahoma) Worst experience at a visiting stadium. 14. The Orange Bowl (Florida International) Final game in the Orange Bowl (2007). 15. Romney Stadium (Utah State) Best visiting stadium I've been to, even with Utah's weird alcohol laws.
  8. Over a decade later and I'm bringing this topic back to life ... 😁 The original question concerned the competitiveness of the Big West Conference during UNT's tenure (1996-2000) against the competitiveness of the first five years UNT was in the Sun Belt Conference (2001-2005). During the years in question, I think it's safe to say the Big West and Sun Belt were perceived by sports writers and the general population as the worst Division I conferences in America. I think that is a fair assessment given the overall results of out of conference competition. But I think the Big West had better teams and competed against out of conference competition tougher than their later Sun Belt peers. From a personal standpoint I will always have a place in my heart for the Big West Conference. My first year as a student at UNT was Fall of 1998, which also coincided with the first year of one Darrell Dickey. The 1998 football season was also crazy. The out of conference schedule was ridiculous as it featured games against Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Kansas, and Houston. UNT was 0-6 against those teams. But going into the last game of the season against New Mexico State, UNT actually had a chance of making the Humanitarian Bowl as a 3-8 team. They had to beat New Mexico State and Idaho needed to lose their final game against Boise State. North Texas did beat NMSU but Idaho beat Boise State, thus eliminating North Texas from the bowl berth. Idaho, however, only defeated Boise State 36-35 in overtime. That means the margin of defeat for North Texas was only 2 points! (I'm sure the officials in the Big West, the NCAA, and at ESPN were all cheering for Idaho to win). North Texas going to a bowl as a 3-8 team would've made the 5-6 New Orleans Bowl team of 2001 look not so bad.
  9. 2007 was indeed a messed up year. A quick recap: 1. North Texas hires a high school coach. 2. North Texas loses its first game of the season 79-10 at Oklahoma. 3. North Texas loses at SMU 45-31 even though Daniel Meager throws for something like 500 yards. 4. In a 31-21 win against Louisiana-Monroe, Casey Fitzgerald has one of the most memorable plays in recent North Texas history. 5. On November 10th, Navy comes to Denton and a track meet ensues. North Texas can't stop the triple-option and Navy can't stop the Dodgeball. But Navy comes out on top 74-62. 6. North Texas wins it's second game of the season on November 24th against Western Kentucky, a transitioning Division I-AA team, in a driving sleet storm. Attendance at Fouts Field is about 500, there was a pre-game fight, and North Texas wins by one 27-26. 7. And finally, the first year of the Todd Dodge regime comes to an inglorious end against Florida International in the last game ever played in the Orange Bowl. North Texas loses 38-19 to a team that had not won a game in its last 23 tries. 2007 was indeed a messed up year.
  10. "YOU WILL NOT LAUGH, YOU WILL NOT CRY, YOU WILL LEARN!"
  11. Well, I think you and the Thompson's have the right to react the way you see fit. But just because the two of you have that reaction does not mean that everyone will. So, I would respectfully disagree with your assessment.
  12. Wow, is this like that scene from Star Wars when Obi-won tells the stormtroopers (paraphrasing), the droids you're looking for are not here?! It's amazing that you know exactly how I would react in a given situation!
  13. Look, I'm not denying that there isn't an inherent risk when it comes to playing football. There are inherent risks in playing other sports as well. Players take on those risks just like someone driving a car. But I believe one of the goals of football leadership in this country (and this includes Division 1 football programs And head coaches of said programs) should be player safety and the minimization of those risks. And when I see a young kid getting beat to a pulp for no reason whatsoever, I'm going to speak up.
  14. At the start of the 4th quarter the score was 43-23. With 4:07 left in the game, the score was 50-23. It was never a two-score game. Also, Fine was not the best quarterback on the team at that point. As mentioned before, the guy could barely get back off the ground. And finally, "it is football and some games just go that way" is exactly the attitude that needs to change in this country so that football players don't turn into vegetables when they reach 50 years old. I'm not saying that is going to happen to Fine, but with the overall damage he has taken, not only this year but last year as well, he has a much higher risk.
  15. This topic has nothing to do with bad officiating. Nor am I referring to any other game this season. I'm talking specifically about the New Orleans Bowl. And I refuse to complain about officiating. I'm talking about getting your starting quarterback killed. The head to head collision on Fine, late in the 4th quarter, never should have happened because he should not have been in the game. There was no point in him being in the game, not to mention that he could barely stand up at that point. He was getting rocked all game, and at some point this coaching staff needed to say enough was enough. If I were his parents I'd be appalled.
  16. It was irresponsible and dangerous on the part of this coaching staff to allow Mason Fine to play in the game for as long as he did. That is all ....
  17. I'm all for it! In fact, I think the G5 should go a step further and completely boycott playing P5 schools. Can you imagine the reactions of P5 athletic directors and head coaches?! After their collective large, bulbous, heads stopped spinning, smoke would poor out of their ears, and then they would internally combust like the gremlin stuck in the microwave. "What?! You mean we would actually have to play even competition for every game of the season?!" In the words of Marlon Brando from Apocalypse Now: "The Horror."
  18. I believe he's referencing every North Texas fan's favorite line: "UNT is a hard place to recruit to."
  19. Exactly what I was going to post IF we made it to a bowl. Nobody wants to admit it, but you have to give McCarney credit for this bowl invitation, if one is coming. He may not have recruited the most talented athletes, but he did recruit smart kids.
