  1. Well, it looks like I'll need to bring more beer to future games. We showed up too early at about 1 o'clock, and parked in the lot behind the super pit thinking we could tailgate there, but to no avail. We wandered around the orange and blue lots a little bit, but people just kinda' looked at us funny (Old guy and his daughter? What're they doing here?) We finally settled in at the student tailgating section, threw a little football around, drank some beer, and listened to the band before going in. Did the village thing a little bit, but didn't have the necessary enigmatic wristbands to participate in anything. The kid starting crying in the game because we were sitting in the student section on the 50 yard line, and she couldn't see anything. I put her up in the rail, but security came and made her get down. We moved over the the endzone by the cannon, and she had a lot better time there. She enjoyed watching the smoke rings come out of the cannon. It was fun, but it would be a lot better if we knew somebody. Tough going these things alone.
  2. My assessment from the peanut gallery is that the raw talent is there, but there's not any discipline. They shot themselves in the foot a couple times with those defensive penalties, and it all went downhill from there.
  3. Did you see the size of that offensive line?
  4. I'm waayyyy to new here to have an opinion one way or the other on a new stadium. That said, here are my questions on the matter. 1) What is the ultimate goal of UNT football? UNT will obviously never be a Texas or an A&M. BCS conference is not realistically in the picture. So where does UNT want itself positioned? Top of the Sunbelt Conference? Movement to a better Conference like C-USA where we might fare about as well as UTEP (some good years, some bad, no championships)? 2) Given UNT's current status as a lower tier team in a really low conference, how much will a new stadium realistically affect recruitment over 5 years? 10 years? What's it done for FIU? 3) What kind of revenue increases can the football program expect from a new stadium? The capacity looks about the same, so the addition comes from the 14 skyboxes? 4) How strong is UNT's commitment to football? I'm always skittish on this since I became a student in California, I've seen Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, Chico State, Pacific, UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Cal State Northridge, and Sonoma State drop their football programs. I see locally that UTA once had a team as well. What guarantee do I have that if I vote for this stadium, I'm going to have a team to watch 5 years from now? 5) Are tickets suddenly going to shoot up to $50 to retire the construction debt in a timely manner? Please don't misunderstand me as being anti-stadium. I am giddy like a kid on Christmas morning at the prospect of going to the game today. I feel robbed and cheated that I went to a school with no football the first time around. I want the program to continue and to succeed, and when I graduate (again) and start working (again), I'm not adverse to writing checks to the athletic foundation (as I have done on numerous occasions with UC Irvine). I just don't want a decision of this magnitude to based solely on keeping up with the Jones mentality.
  5. Devoid of our gambling dollars, and thus any economy whatsoever.
  6. Not true. I'm originally from California, and I've always known that Oklahoma existed. We called it Bakersfield East.
  7. How do you keep a Tulsa fan in suspense? I'll tell ya' later. What do you call the sight of a plumber under the sink with his pants creeping down, exposing his crack? Tulsa Cleavage. You know you're staying in a Tulsa motel, when you call up the front desk to say you gotta leak in the sink, and the guy says, "Go ahead." What does a Tulsa divorce and a tornado have in common? One way or the other someone is losing their trailer! How did the Tulsa find his sister in the woods? Not bad. How did the Tulsa fan respond to all the Tulsa jokes? YO MOMMA!
  8. Yeah, well, when your family tree http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYlJH81dSiw, it's understandable that yo mamma jokes would become the standard attempt at humor.
  9. The bowl that people from Oklahoma know how to play in best...
  10. There are baseball renderings on there. Is UNT looking to start up a team?
  11. It says Texas Stadium is also an option. That would be really cool. Don't think I could convince the warden...er um....Mrs. Oldguystudent of the merits of the $45 ticket price though. I'll say this of LSU though. I went down there in June for the super regionals so see UC Irvine, and their tailgating is just absolutely amazing. I think I must've gained about 1000 pounds and killed 3/4 of my brain cells down there.
  12. Is there a Brookshires in Denton? I live in Frisco where there's a snooty suburbanite tax on all things booze.
  13. Why yes, yes I do. Unfortunately, the Tulsa cheerleaders were unable to return the favor.
  14. I'm sure they would find that insulting if only they could count that high.
  15. Where exactly did you find a representative student essay from Tulsa?
  16. I was thinking more along the lines that one shouldn't ruin one's Coke with Crown. One should drink good malty Scotch instead. That given, on my newly found student's life budget, I'll be the one drinking tall boys of Milwaukee's Best tomorrow...gah! Back to being a student in more ways than one! I'm gonna' miss good booze for a while!
  17. When I learn what is and is not acceptable behavior on this board, I will have very witty remarks to pictures like that.
  18. Seeing as how going back to school has, for the time being, put me in the "poorhouse", what are the beer prices like at the "pourhouse"? I looked at their website, but there isn't any pricing on the menus.
  19. As usual, the Big West Conference serves as little more than a halfway house for schools that are moving up from D2 or those that are developing their football programs. Schools that have left for the WAC or another D1A football conference from the Big West since I was a student: Fresno State, UNLV, San Jose State, Idaho, Utah State, Nevada, New Mexico State, North Texas, Boise State, La Tech, Northern Illinois, La Lafayette. Gawd I hate that conference!!!!! We were a great basketball conference when I started school with half decent football, and the people that run the show just pissed it all away. Why yes, I AM bitter about the crappy attitude towards athletics at UC Irvine and its influence on the steady downhill decline of the conference overall!!! Well, at least we've still got baseball. That seems to be the only sport the Big West cares about, and UC Irvine actually had the gumption (under the direction of current UCLA AD Dan Guerrero) to resurrect their baseball program. Sorry for the rant. Any mention of former or current Big West teams bolting just strikes a certain nerve with me.
  20. I think they're staying at the Holiday Lodge on the corner of University and Ruddell. Free WIFI and everything!
  21. OK. Two specific questions. On my thread about game day questions, someone suggested parking in the lot across the street from the super pit on Highland. Do I really need to show up at 10 or 11 to get a spot there? Were it me and me alone, I'd be content to sit around sucking down the beers until I'm rendered eligible for the handicapped ramps into the stadium. However, bringing the kid, I don't know that I can keep her entertained for that long of a time. Question two -- I see people are mentioning bringing grills. Can I bring a charcoal grill or does it have to be gas? If I can bring charcoal, where does one dispose of the coals?
  22. Show up totally unprepared with a cooler and a couple chairs Find place to park -- what's a beerman? Drink 3 beers at most Throw kid in bounce house Go into stadium Try to explain game of football to kid Drive home wishing I were able to drink more beer during the tailgating Don't get me wrong. I'm still totally looking forward to this.
  23. Was referring more to the demographics of the student body than anything else.
  24. Thanks for the welcome all. Soo.. Tell me about this new stadium thing. I went to UC Irvine in Southern California, and the closest football team was at Cal State Fullerton. They were similar to UNT in enrollment, the opponents they played and the results therein. In 1991, they opened a shiny new football stadium, played one season in it, ran out of money, and dropped football forever. The stadium now hosts the soccer team and some high school football games. I don't know that I can draw complete parallels to the UNT situation, but I can attest that a new stadium is not necessarily a panacea for all that ails your program. Where would the construction money be coming from, and how would it affect the overall athletic budget? I know there's an argument that a new stadium would be a recruitment tool, but without money to run the program, that becomes moot. Of course, the intangible variable that I'm leaving out is that this IS Texas. Football carries a wee bit higher priority here than it does in most California schools (unless you're at USC, otherwise known as SMU west).
  25. Hi everyone, New to UNT and mean green football. I'm going this Saturday since neither my high school nor my first college had football. This will be my first college football game ever (at age 36!). So I got the student guess pass to bring the kid along, and I wonder what the situation with the parking, tailgating and UNT village activities are. I'm aware of the orange lot. How early would one need to arrive to get a spot in there? Can I drink frosty cold beverages in my parking space no matter the lot I'm in? What if I have to park in a lot not directly adjacent to the stadium? What goes on in the UNT village? Anything for the kid (7yo) to do in there? How early before the game does one need to enter the stadium to get decent seats in the student section? What concessions are available? (No beer at NCAA events these days, right?) Thanks in advance for the information. I'm really looking forward to this.
