  1. A couple of interesting ideas that I hadn't heard before being discussed...namely the thought that the WAC might steal the NO Bowl while the SBC would then get the GMAC and a Florida bowl. In THAT scenario, I would think that UNT would have to SERIOUSLY consider joining the WAC. One mentioned that UNT would "deliver" the NO Bowl to the WAC. Which brings me to... ...does anyone have the "actual" butts in seats for the NO Bowl games in terms of how well each SBC school did? I know we brought between 10-15k for 4 straight years and FAU did miserable last year....ASU had the game in Lafayette. How did Troy do in their trip? Either way, is it possible that b/c of our great showing that we are considered a major selling point for that bowl in future conference alignments?
  2. Greatness!...but let's not limit this to just one poster. Everyone gets a share! Seriously, though...EVERYONE here wants to see bonafide proof that the administration is 150% behind the program and ready to do the things that are necessary to move us out of the perpetual bottom 10. That said, the kinds of actions that are going to get us there aren't going to be broadcast on some sort of 24x7x365 UNT admin news station....it's going to happen behind closed doors and then boom....we'll know. All we've really heard out of the admin (both university and athletic) is that we "really want a stadium", that we've hired architects to design it (FACT) and that it's obvious that our new AC is built with a stadium in mind (hence the damn locker rooms that open to a currently EMPTY FIELD!). That's a lot of smoke that would indicate that something is happening. What we have right now in Fouts is one of the 3-5 worst football stadiums in all of FBS. It is by all intents and purposes a 20k seat stadium (anyone who has ever sat out on the aluminum bleachers knows that those seats SUCK and that nobody should have to pay to sit there). At this point, a 30k horseshoe (saying that b/c the AC construction makes it pretty clear that's what the designers have in mind) with great sight-lines makes sense and is a 10k seat improvement over our current stadium. If you think that a 40k+ seat stadium is the only way to go, you either know a way to build it for the same cost as a 30k (without making it out of erector set parts) stadium.....or you're out of touch with reality. If you think that we're going to start drawing 40k for Thanksgiving weekend games against Arkansas State....you're out of touch with reality. If you've EVER attended a UNT home football game and think a 40k stadium is MANDATORY.....you're out of touch with reality. Clear enough?
  3. ...some posters in this thread are a bit out of touch with reality.
  4. Or the counter that if gas continues to go up, how many more students will try to go to UTD or UTA rather than making the drive to Denton? My first 2 years at UNT I lived in Kerr Hall and in nearby apartments in Denton---BUT I worked in Carrollton and drove back and forth almost every day (partly b/c well paying part-time jobs were hard to come by in Denton). Is 45k enrollment really feasible?? Can Denton support that kind of increase in the next 5 years?? Either way, higher gas prices should continue to help turn UNT into a more conventional residential university....or so you would think.
  5. FAU was 3rd in the nation in turnover margin?! Doesn't that usually signal that a team that just barely won the conference might have over-achieved a little? Granted, turning us over has been something FAU has specialized in in their last 2 trips to Fouts....maybe the karma swings back the other direction this year?
  6. YES!!!! Winning puts butts in seats. oh...and I'm in on the lottery idea.
  7. People....this guy gave himself away a page ago. He is a troll. Let it go.
  8. You'll get no argument from me that UNT-Dallas is/was a bad idea from the beginning. In fact, I think you'll find no opposition on that point on this board....esp. if it can be proven that UNT-Dallas has taken away money that would have gone directly to building a new stadium. Why come so hard to the table with the 'athletics is not the answer' argument if all you were really after was finding agreement that UNT-Dallas is a drain on Denton??
  9. Whoever started in with this "impress 18 year olds" line of arguing for the stadium is doing everyone a disservice. Yes, we want to impress upon the general population that UNT is something that is worth being associated with...but to limit it to 18 year olds opens the door for skeptics like CheckFacts to blast in with this 'pet project' crap. GreenMean is right...we need the machine (academics + student life) working completely to get where we all want to go. Anyone who can't see that "can't see the forest for the trees."
  10. I will not be embarrassed b/c I have family that have ties to both UTSA and Texas State....depressed is a better description. If this article doesn't get our President's and BOR's attention, I'm not sure anything ever will. We need to start turning dirt on Eagle Point and we need that Student Fee in place asap.
  11. Ok...here's the thing I don't understand about the Hayden Fry years: We DROPPED out of the MVC and went independent for what purpose? The SWC thing didn't come around for 3-4 years. If this is really the way it was done, then I don't know why Fry doesn't get criticized for it....I mean, you wouldn't quit a job before you HAD ANOTHER one to go to. So why quit a conference when we weren't already IN another? What about going independent was going to help us? I know it was a different time and conference membership may not have mattered as much....just looking for some historical background/perspective on this.
  12. Ok...so what am I missing here? It seems like "probation" is all FIU got (as all the other penalties had already been self-imposed) other than a "public reprimand." Vacating records is just dumb...maybe the history books will change, but who really cares?? Does probation mean that they can't play in a bowl game or go to the tourney? If not, this is not that harsh a penalty and people need to lay off the "unfair" comparisons to USC & Reggie Bush and OU.
  13. ...yeah, what he said. The spring game showed the lack of size and depth we have at DT. I love DeLoach and think we'll get it turned around. For that to happen this year, though, too many redshirts and Juco's are going to have step into major contributing roles to expect just the schemes to save us. Put DeLoach at DC with last season's senior laden defense and we have the 8-4 season that would have REALLY gotten the Dodge buzz roaring. That said, nothing is out of the question. We have some talented redshirt freshman and JUCOs coming in that *could* be serious playmakers. To "expect" so many to be hits and not misses is getting ahead of ourselves.
  14. We lost too many to graduation from our defensive front 7 to expect .500 or better. I think 3-4 wins is probably the sweet spot for what to expect this year.
  15. That was only 7-8 years ago. The internet boom had already happened if that's what you're referring to. Heck, SMU was in that conference up until 2-3 years ago and they couldn't get 10k into a game to watch the "great" WAC opponents. I was actually con'ed into attending a game of their's against LaTech. LaTech probably brought 1/8 the crowd that UNT brought last year to Ford and SMU got *maybe* 5k more to show up. I am NOT kidding. I've been to UNT games where we had 500 people in the stands (not counting the band)....against the Big West (now WAC). SMU had the same problems playing those same teams even after several of those teams made names for themselves. As for Hawaii---they are DONE. D. O. N. E. The coach that built them is gone and he left no good successor like Hawkins did at Boise. Maybe the state will step up, but when your coach leaves for SMU you know things can't be good.
  16. I'm sorry...I can't let that statement slide. We couldn't get 10k to more than one game a year before 2001's run began....we had a 'technical' avg. attendance somewhere in the 14-15k range but rarely had more than 7-8k actually in attendance for all but the first game of the year every year. Since that run we have had a 20+k crowd almost every season at least once (AT FOUTS, and mostly against non-BCS teams) and have 17-18k at every game (except the damn dirty Thanksgiving weekend games)....and those are verifiable crowds since we now scan tickets and IDs at the gate. We were near death before 2001. Winning saved us. Do I even need to remind you of the catastrophically bad offenses that we used to run that made our style of play almost near unwatchable to anyone that wasn't already a die-hard UNT fan?!?
  17. ...and I would bet that you'd be wrong. Serious question: Were you around to see the Big West conference days?
  18. Well, then....working in 2 new DE's is good news for us! I think an upset win is a long-shot, but maybe we can at least be competitive in this game (which would be a HUGE improvement over last year).
  19. What is their d-line and LB corp like? Teams proved to us last year that secondary really doesn't matter if the QB doesn't have time to throw (Ark. and Troy games come to mind).
  20. 1. NMSU 2. MTSU 3. Troy 4. Ark St. 5. LaLa 6. Southern Miss 7. Houston 8. UTEP 9. La Tech Since this is just favorites, we can have NMSU and UTEP together--and La Tech and LaLa....but it would never happen in real life. F' the private schools--they would do nothing but cause trouble, so I say leave them out.
  21. Outstanding work, sir! Let me add that you already have a group at your disposal that wasn't in existence the last time the students voted on this---The Pit Crew. You really only need 2-3k votes to pass your referendum....so direct your campaigning efforts right at the people who have proven to show up in big numbers for all the bball games and you have a fighting chance. If it was me, I would stay away from doing a campus wide campaign for this to avoid stirring up too much crap and JUST focus on the GREEKS, the Pit Crew and all current student athletes. With that base, you should be able to win. Just the 2 cents of a former SA exec......
