  1. Outstanding post....I agree with every single word.
  2. I used to favor a playoff scenario, but have absolutely no faith that we'd ever be given access. Therefore, I hope this plays out in a fairly civilized manner. I think a +1 game would be the best option out there right now b/c I truly don't believe you'd ever see a playoff with more than 8 teams invited--which would ultimately just seed teams under a similar formula to what the current BCS uses. Now...if by some miracle, a playoff that allowed each conference champion access were to come about.....I'd definitely like to see it.
  3. From a coaching perspective, I say DeLoach can absolutely do the job. I missed the radio show tonight, though and have never heard him speak in public---a BIG part of being a D1 HC. I've also heard that he never did like recruiting all that much (during his past stint here)--I have no idea how true that is, but am just bringing that up b/c I think the real question is whether or not he'd even want the job. Regardless of what happens with Dodge, I'd like for DeLoach to be a permanent fixture here in whatever capacity he'd like....and wouldn't have had a problem with Bliel getting that same chance during this last transition. I think that Dodge is still a great 'face' for the program. The HC job is "supposedly" not so much about Xs and Os as it is about setting a direction for the program, selling the program to the public, hiring good assistants that you can point in one direction and then let them do their jobs. To me, this current situation seems like it could be salvaged if we were able to make a few specific changes to the staff. I definitely am not an insider, though...so that's just pure speculation.
  4. The first thing that popped into my head upon reading (crapping myself, in all honesty) shaft's thread about how we should have never fired DD was ----"where are Quoner's MMRs when we need them!?" Thank you.
  5. Why wait for PHS to tell us?....if you can expound on this point, please---for the love of God!---do.
  6. QFT. The definitive post on the 2008 season, if you ask me.
  7. Forget punting....just kick the ball straight out of bounds. Take the penalty and give them the ball on their 40. This is the only way we can win this(or any) game. If we refuse to do this, we need to start making everyone on the ST unit(including coaches) do push-ups, on the sideline, for each yard given up on kickoff coverage. That would at least be entertaining.
  8. Exactly. For this team to build upon this win, the coaches need to finally stop trying to run special teams plays....AT ALL. I propose kicking the ball straight out of bounds on every kickoff from here on out.
  9. So we can expect a larger than normal turnout for attendance? Awesome!! My adjusted attendance prediction for this game is 600.....up from 300 had this been just a regular game.
  10. Steve Warren got a lot of PT tonight and also layed some pretty good licks....anybody know what happened to Penson? Was he hurt or has Warren just passed him on the depth chart?
  11. I'll agree that this story has the potential(and is realizing that potential as it's being picked up everywhere) to be a national story. Look, I'm not a Vito hater. I remember back to his days covering the DD teams and he was the one getting called the coaches lapdog b/c people wanted him to ask tougher questions and take DD to task in his pieces. Instead, he wrote solid factual stuff and didn't always find a way to work some kind of negative background stats/material into it that may or may not be relevant. I just don't understand what happened to get to the point he's now at. The only obvious change is that the Head Coach changed and Dodge doesn't give as much access as DD did. Maybe since he posts on this board now (to post links to the DRC website and his reports) he'll take time to comment?
  12. No argument on the Phillips comment, but why is Vito's report the truth and Phillip's not? Seems like they both report on the same subject matter and facts. If you don't perceive a tone in Vito's article, then great. That's your opinion. In my opinion he goes out of his way to be negative. Just start reading right past the comment from Dodge that "We are past it now and can go down that road". "That road has been a rough one for UNT. The Mean Green is off to the worst start in the history of the program at 0-8 heading into a game at Western Kentucky University on Saturday and has lost nine straight games overall. Dodge came to UNT after winning four state titles in his last five seasons at Southlake Carroll High School. His arrival has helped increase interest in the football program. UNT averaged 17,734 fans per game last season, its highest total since 2003, and is averaging 18,754 fans this season. Earlier this month, Dodge also played a lead role in convincing UNT’s student body to approve an athletic fee that will help the school replace a rapidly deteriorating Fouts Field with a new football stadium" I don't see the relevance to the story being reported to discuss the teams "worst start in the history of the program". To his credit he turns around and lists positives...but they come off as trying to make an attempt to balance out the negative just brought up. My question is why is it relevant to the story? Phillips goes out of his way to be positive. However, if you DO think the team's record is, for some reason, relevant to this story then Phillips also cites it: "Dodge, whose team is 0-8 this season, said performance "de-hancing" in a number of players led him and assistant coaches to suspect drug use." In that sentence, he's definitely trying to paint Dodge in a better light by showing him as proactive to fixing a problem. Cheerleader? I don't know, possibly. The question is not whether both reporters report facts....clearly, there is nothing that is not factual in either snippet. But the question of relevance and how those facts are stated is what makes either piece too negative or too positive. Seems that that question is up for your own interpretation....to each his own.
  13. I don't think it's as cut and dry as labeling this as reporters vs. cheerleaders. No matter how hard people try to use this line or argument, both papers report the facts. No one is disputing that. What is in question is why one consistently reports it with a negative tone while the other reports it with a consistently positive tone. So if we're going to name call, lets do it both ways. We've got a case of one reporter being an instigator/sensationalist and the other being a cheerleader. There always seems to be an agenda behind the reporting(in just about all news these days). Where is the dang reporting that is JUST what you say: Reporting? We can't get our news anymore without a healthy dose of opinion/spin piled on??
  14. Can we get this thread back on track and start bashing Vito again? Please? Compare/contrast the 2 pieces concerning the drug testing released this week by DFW area newspapers....The DRC, Vito version vs. FWST, Troy Phillips. News is news, yes....but one reports it with a negative tone while the other reports it with a positive tone. We've gone over this ad-naseum for at least a year (dating back to the racism coverage last season). I think it reached a critical point this last week with this piece and separately having George Dunham call Vito out during the Troy game broadcast. Like it or not, that was a public statement that the AD and people close to the program are tired of the way Vito reports the "news" at North Texas.
  15. would have predicted a close loss before today's news about the drug test....now that I know that and it's being published in newspapers/tv/etc: blowout loss of epic proportions
  16. So is this the explanation as to why certain coaches aren't allowed to play the guys they want to play---as has been rumored here on the board? The players they are wanting to play are being punished for failing the drug test? I never could tell with all the other talk about seniors being benched in favor of throwing the young guys to the wolves. I'm sure it's probably a little of both....?? Anyone truly know the answer? If this is what has been going on and we've actually been taking steps to clean this up, I don't see how anyone can bash the coaching staff for trying to clean up a drug problem on the team. Unless you think doing drugs isn't really that big a deal. Also, Dodge's statement about thinking that we don't have a drug problem could be due to the idea that he now thinks the steps they are taking are working or have/will work to help fix the problem. When was the drug test conducted?
  17. Dang this board is tough.....think Nautique could have probably used a little smoother touch, but it seems like he was really just asking a question as to what has put DM on the bench (and now 3rd string). It is hard to get a feel for it from the board b/c different people have different sources... and I'm not saying that one is right and the others are wrong. I guess I always thought that Dodge just made a concious effort to build from the ground up and take his lumps with the freshman QB. Unfortunately, it seems that most of the team sees it this same way and feels that the coaching staff gave up on the upper-classmen. So that decision appears to have backfired on him. Given our current record, I am not sure why more of the seniors aren't playing, though....sometimes guys need to learn by watching a few games and it sure seems like it would go a long ways to helping team chemistry at this point.
  18. Comparing us to Tulsa isn't really a fair comparison. They have been in that offense for years (since Kragthorpe, then slightly modified by Graham) and they are starting seniors (who have played their entire careers in that offense) at QB, HB, TE, etc....Dodge chose to put a Freshman in at QB and get him and the rest of the team the experience. We're going through a sophomore slump and I think the offense isn't as bad as most are making it out to be. I think plays are there, we're just not executing well enough right now for various reasons. The defense and special teams on the other hand are another story. I guarantee that the ineptness there is bleeding over into the offensive players minds. Ever played on a team where one phase of the game (that you couldn't control) was getting you beat over and over again? That is a feeling of helplessness that is hard to overcome. If you think you have to be perfect on every play in order to win you are going to press...and when you do that on every play in every game it is going to wear on you eventually. People point to the Navy game, last year, as the point in which our offense started getting "figured out" by opposing coaching staffs. I think that's completely wrong. I think that's the point where every player on our offense realized that they had to play perfect football in every game in order to win....and subsequently that's when their slide began....b/c they know how hard that is to do and they begin to play tight.
  19. Couple of questions and opinions. I, too, see the oline doing a MUCH better job than last year and they seem to get better every game. I also see WR's open all over the field....problem is we'll have read the defense before the play and will seemingly force the play into the coverage many times. Maybe I'm just blind, I really don't know...but I've seen WRs open, maybe not open deep (where a few long plays would to along way to REALLY opening up the coverage) as much as we need, though. The other thing is whether or not the players are quitting in games. Maybe quit is the wrong word, but to me, it seems that we've lost confidence at some point in every single game to the point that the players are slumping their shoulders and playing hesitant. I've heard alot of people say that the team is not quitting and they are trying, but I don't see it....I see a team really not hustling once the game gets out of reach....not everyone, mind you, but enough that plays just break down. Good example is this last game against Troy. The defense came out a little fired up, had a few plays go against them and were down big quick. Instead of quitting early, they seemed to bow up a little bit in that second quarter and finished the half strong. Then the second half started and Troy runs the trick play on their first play....you could see their confidence get shattered and they started playing back on their heels. I guess that's the thing I see....the difference between guys playing back on their heels and waiting for the play to come to them versus attacking the ball once the ball is snapped. Am I seeing it wrong? Maybe that's not quit, but when you can see guys making half hearted attempts to tackle ball carriers and not wrapping up and just flat out getting stood up and pushed back it sure looks like it.
  20. Good post. Anyone questioning DeLoach hasn't been following the team close enough. I'll go ahead and say that if DeLoach isn't still at NT next season, but Dodge is....I'll be starting up the FireToddDodge.com website myself.
  21. In regards to the offensive questions....I saw lots of wide open plays and other obvious calls that could have gouged Troy's D. Problem is, we'd seem to lock in on one read and if it wasn't there we often didn't have enough time to get to the second or third read. Not sure why we don't run a quick inside slant to the outside WR more often...esp. since we seem to set it up so perfectly with our quick throws to the inside WR who then looks to run outside. That and a true screen pass to a HB executed well would have worked last night. Either way, thought the offense had plays there all game....we seemed to be setting up the 15-20 yard post routes over the middle perfectly, only to have an errant throw sink the play. Moral of the story, better reads at the LOS and a little better execution and this offense puts up at least a couple more scoring drives. That said, it's hard to be perfect on offense and that's pretty much what we have to do every game in order to have a chance due to our completely inept defense. Sure, they are showing improvement, but it's not coming fast enough. The one bright spot on defense is that the coaches seem to be doing a lot better job of making adjustments during the game(thank DeLoach). Fast starts by the other team are just killing us, though....not sure if that is due to gameplanning or just being ready to play, but when you're down by 3+ scores so quickly in every single game you're going to see a team that loses heart and then it's just hard to evaluate(offense or defense) from then on out. We badly need to schedule some terrible div-1aa(not one who might actually give us a game) school to start next season....this defense just doesn't believe in itself and we need a confidence builder. As far as what to expect with TD and what the AD will do....look for the season ticket sales to determine how much time he actually gets. If it drops off sharply after this season (which it likely will--half of my group is gone for anything outside of tailgating), Dodge's rope will be much shorter....same record this time next year with empty stands and TD will be gone.
  22. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but when I read about staff changes and then hear DeLoach's name even mentioned in the same post, I just can't take it. Please, please, please, tell me that DeLoach is not going anywhere anytime soon....
  23. ...and that would be different than any other game this year?
  24. Troy by at least 60....possibly by halftime.
  25. The Todd Dodge to Vic Trilli resemblance is starting to get really, really scary. Vic Trilli was probably the single greatest recruiter (in any sport) that this school has seen since the 60's, at least. His teams, though, were some of the most non-competitive teams that I've ever watched. The talent on the team that mostly left and transferred to Big 12 schools after Trilli was fired was truly ridiculous....and proof of how good those guys really were was obvious when they quickly became studs on good teams in that conference. We had a PG go to Tech and lead the Big 12 in points per game the NEXT SEASON, a forward leave for Texas (during their Final 4 run) and in 1 season became their 6th man and a key player, another F/C go to OSU (also when they were VERY good) that started and was a stud for them too....seems like there were at least a couple others. Either way, the point is that when Trilli first got here he brought a buzz with him too and then brought in top 20 recruiting classes....people got fired up, supposedly did things the right way, crowds improved some initially, but 3-4 years later we couldn't draw 500 people to the games b/c we were SO NON-COMPETITIVE on the court. It wasn't so much the losses that cost Trilli his job, but HOW we lost and how we looked as a team, and most importantly---the complete lack of attendance at home games. The point is, regardless of how good the players are or how well a coach sells the school and presents himself in public (Trilli was a flat out unbelievable speaker), the coaching staff is going to have to get the team to play together. UNT is not a school that can sustain multiple winless (or worse, complete seasons of getting BLOWN OUT of every game) seasons and retain that fanbase increase. I really think that the AD is going to have to be watching the season ticket numbers for next year and if they drop significantly, Dodge will be evaluated at least by mid-season next year. He'll remain our coach, no matter the record, as long as the ticket sales are still good.
