This is like saying the quality of food at Taco Bell has increased significantly over the past four years...it's still subpar.
It is. But in a North Texas context, the Mac/Hodge teams have received almost unprecedented support. Look at the list of top 10 all time crowds. Like half of them came during this one stretch. We’re also very critical of our fanbase (& should be to a degree) but if you take out Memphis and look at other AAC games when they’re on TV, they all kind look similar with butts in seats.
TLDR: Don’t like it either. Wish it was better. Not unique to North Texas.

Why can’t we be a power conference? Can UNT at least be a conference champion with Hodge?
What does this mean?

Dang... after 7 years of success you'd think the company we keep on lists like this wouldn't look like THIS. Embarrassing.
I don’t know. His stats look reasonable to me from a production standpoint. Maybe a little undersized for a 4 in the AAC. We could definitely use a quality rebounder now that Allen is gone.

I miss Steve's BBQ. That was the first place I ever had BBQ. He said we could bring in a keg as long as we shared it with him.
Same! That man would hook you up on your BBQ plate if you shared your BYOB stash with him. Good times!
Current day: 407 gets the top spot.

Tech fans would revolt. Ross has no skins or banners yet as a Dl coach. He has no connection to Tech like Grant did.
For real. Half of that ridiculous fanbase completely freaked when McCasland was the choice last year thinking it was “small time”. No way they could sell Ross as the hire to that group.

I mean at this point almost all of the talented AAC players regardless of team are in the portal. They’re going to have to adopt some contractual obligations for players/schools in the future. Year over year complete rebuild across D1 basketball isn’t sustainable.

My Spring game takeaway: Chandler Morris will be QB1 by week 2 on campus.
Earle looked the best. That said, they all threw balls that either were actually picked (2 pick 6’s) or should/would have been picked by teams in regular season action. Morris should be QB1 this fall. If not, I’m concerned about the team’s ceiling right off the bat.
Lack of DL size and depth continues to be a problem. Can’t believe we didn’t aggressively address this in the portal in the off season. Crazy.
Tackling in running situations seemed more consistent to me. Don’t know if that’s a product of less RB talent than last year or improvement in the defensive talent and comfort in scheme. Safeties are bigger and look more athletic than last year.

Well apparently not Buggs either. Gonna be a whole new squad next season.

So tell me this, a guy jumps from Juco to AAC, plays majority of games without two starters. Had to take on the point guard role and it wasn't good enough? en
I’ve said many times that he’s a good player. As @Censored by Laurie stated though, he’s not a “special” talent. He’s not Perry, or Hamlet, or White, or Thompson, or Davis. I think we can find a better ball handler, more efficient scorer & a longer, more tenacious perimeter defender. We’ll see though. That’s Ross’ job to get that done, not mine.
And as far as this season being “good enough” - it’s a matter of perspective I suppose. The AAC wasn’t THAT much tougher than CUSA of past. We were kinda mid pack. Didn’t really beat the good teams in league play. We did get into the NIT though - but there were tons of teams on the declined NIT invite list. Happy we played post-season basketball but still think we left quite a bit on the table when it was all said and done.

If he was the complete package when he came here he wouldn't have came here. Again, this fanbase/board needs to come to grips with the age of NIL and the transfer portal. We love our guys until they leave.
Stating facts about his game is “ripping” him?
And with NIL - I’m comfortable with it. So are most of the rational posters here. If these dudes are “paid” athletes now, they can handle criticism - especially from fans that fund the program (season ticket holders, MGSF, & NIL collective donors). This isn’t college athletics of old. It’s not as fun. And if they don’t stay and get degrees, you’re not really one of us. You’re someone who played here for a year or two then changed teams like a pro athlete does.

Volume shooter to get his points. Poor ball handler and questionable decision maker in crunch time situations. Liability on defense. Not clutch offensively like Perry or Hamlet.

They said on the pre-game if we win we’re away in either scenario because of a conflict at the Super Pit this weekend 🙄.

Glad we were able to close this one out. Made it tough on ourselves down the stretch but it’s a great road win to start the NIT push.

Pleasantly surprised that we got selected! So important to continue building on the “North Texas plays post-season basketball” expectations.

Edwards is clearly a very good basketball player and dynamic scorer, but if we’re building next season’s roster around him as the clear #1 I think we’re still a middle-of-the-pack AAC team.
if instead he is our sixth man (as I think was always Hodge’s intention) and our second-third leading scorer I think were in a title hunt (assuming some roster continuity)
give me JE averaging 12-15pts on around 10 shots a night than 20ppg on 15-20 (or 22 like last night)
Agree. Too many nights Edwards is a volume shooter to get his points. Look at the box from last night. Edwards 8-22 to get his 26 vs Davis 8-11 to get his 18. Then Goldin 7-12 for his 21. Scoring efficiency matters in these really close games against good teams. We wasted lots of good looks/possessions throughout this season - including last night.
He would be incredible in the scoring firepower off the bench as a 6th man. He probably doesn’t want that role though, which I also understand.

Mixed bag for me this season. Sustained injuries to multiple key players makes it really hard to evaluate. I tend to lean harsher on the criticism because of the roster Ross inherited and elevated expectations for the program in general. But we’re competitive with really good teams and were rarely embarrassed. On the flip side, end of season hindsight, we didn’t really amass any wins of true significance - maybe Memphis but they faded so hard. The good OOC and AAC teams all handled us. Hope the portal is good to us in the off-season to add some size and toughness in the middle.

Congrats to FAU. They make the winning plays consistently. When they’ve beaten you 5 straight, they’re just flat better.

The way things are shaking out there’s definitely a reasonable pathway for us to win this thing. We gotta slay the FAU beast though. We owe em one!

Congrats to FAU on the win. They flat beat us. Davis is a great player. They made the winning plays when it counted. Thought our situational basketball down the stretch was suspect, particularly the bad inbounds play. Impressed with FAU’s athletes and their physicality.

Will we see changes coming from inside UNT?

Honestly UNT would probably be better off if this thing continues to evolve and athletes could just be paid for “NIL” ,which is just straight pay for play anyway, out of the University’s operating budget vs. having to raise it externally from donor sources and funnel it to the department to distribute.
