Labor Day practice canceled as Miner line hobbled Matthew Aguilar El Paso Times Nine UTEP defensive linemen were in the training room Monday -- two of them with serious injuries -- because of the cut-blocking technique used by the New Mexico State offensive line in Saturday's game, Miner head coach Mike Price said Monday. As a result, Price canceled Monday's scheduled 4 p.m. practice. Also, he will remove the redshirt status from freshman James Olalekan, and will move offensive lineman Jake Belshe back to the defensive line -- to bulk up a devastated unit. Of the defensive linemen injured, juniors Zach West (knee) and Joe Ward (ankle) -- both starters -- are the most serious. Price said they likely will miss the Sept. 16 home opener against Houston in the Sun Bowl, addding that West, who earned second-team All-WAC honors last year, could be out up to a month. "Most of the (blocks) are legal," Price said. "(But) it doesn't matter if they're legal or not. Fifteen yards isn't going to help Zach West's knee." Chris Mineo, an All-WAC first-team selection last year, and Alex Obomese, who enjoyed a standout game Saturday, also had knee and ankle issues Monday. Price pointed out, however, that it was his players' job to better ward off the cut-block Saturday. "They (NMSU) just do that on their plays," he said. "That's how they block. What you need is to get your hands down. We didn't get our hands down. We knew it was coming and didn't prepare for it. It's part of the game." First-year New Mexico State coach Hal Mumme had no comment Monday. Price said the bye week couldn't have come at a better time. It gives the Miners 13 days to recover before the Houston game. But he said the injuries severely affect the week's schedule. The initial plan was to focus on hitting and fundamentals this week. He said that probably will not be the case anymore. "(The defensive line) was a strength for us going into the season, now it's a real question mark," Price said. "Guys (like Padilla) are going to have to step up and play."

All of the pressure is squarely on Andy Mac's shoulders. Dickey can lose this game and will see many more seasons in Denton. Can the same be said for Coach Mac?

Nwigwe put a stake in MTSU's heart on the road a couple of year ago. I was there in person and there wasn't a faster player on the field that day. Sometimes we all of the deserved JQ press we forget about JoEl. You just know that JoEl is pumped about this game.

Rick the one big difference between Drew (God rest his soul) and Daniel is that Daniel can flat out fly. Drew had an unbelievable arm but he was not very fleet of foot. We never saw Daniel run very much in 2 a days. I talk to people that have watched Meager in high school and they tell me that he was extremely mobile. I get real excited thinking about seeing Daniel getting a chance to use his speed. But regardless of who starts against MTSU - it was made clear by Dickey at the press conference that there are 3 QB's who have a chance to play in the game. Phillips and Haynes will likely get a shot to show what they can do as well. MAN this is an exciting time! HUGE game on Saturday. GMG!

Defensively, the defensive front played one of their better games against a good offensive front. I think the positive offensively on our scoring drive is that we had a long, sustained drive where we executed well against a very good defensive team and that shows us what we are capable of doing. We got behind the chains too many times with penalties and against an Alabama defense that is hard to overcome. We have to show a lot of improvement from game one to game two for the challenge we have ahead of us. "I am very appreciative of the fans we had there. It was a great environment for college football and it was one of the loudest environments we have encountered. There fans were great, first class, but I think when our kids came out they really fed off those 5,000 Blue Raider fans over there cheering for them. What are your impressions of this series the last four years? All four games have been close and to the wire. "It is two good football teams and it has developed into a good rivalry. North Texas is a very good football team. Coach Darrell Dickey and his staff do a great job. It always seems to come down to one, two or three players in the game and North Texas has made those plays, we haven't. We have to find ways to make those plays and not hurt ourselves against a good football team." How unique of a situation is it to have these two tailbacks (Patrick Cobbs and Jamario Thomas) on the same team? "They are two great tailbacks and that is well documented. They do a tremendous job. Cobbs was a great player two years ago and then for Thomas to come in last year and do the things he did, as a freshman, was very impressive. The unknown going into the game is how they will use them. I can't see that they will change a lot because they have been successful in what they do, but there are a lot of unknowns for us defensively going into the game as far as how they will use both of those backs and, at the same time, the quarterback situation. Going into it, they have a freshman quarterback we haven't seen so that is an unknown." What about the timing of this game on the schedule? "That's out of our control. This football team has opened against a lot of good teams in the past and we go from an Alabama to a North Texas team that is very good. That's the way it is scheduled and that's the one we are getting ready to play. We have a game under our belt and we have to show improvement from that game to this next one. One thing I did learn about this football team at Alabama was they play hard. We have to correct some of the mistakes against a good North Texas team." North Texas' running game gets so much attention but the play-action has really hurt you guys against them in the past. Can you talk about that? "I think if you look at their team you get caught up in the running game but Johnny Quinn is as good as a receiver as there is in the Sun Belt. They are going to run you and run you and then play-action, but they throw the ball much better than they get credit for. I thought (former QB) Scott Hall did a great job throwing the ball for them. He was always hot against us. He hit big plays on us. You have to control the run and keep the ball in front of you. That's a big key. They will do some things that are tough for you defensively throwing the ball off the play-action and the option. We have to be solid in that area." How exciting is this opener? "It's the start of conference. It's your home opener and it is North Texas. That's big every year regardless of when it is played or where it is played. It's always big when you play a team the caliber of North Texas. It's not just us they have been beating. They have won 25 straight conference games and anytime you play them you know it's going to be a challenge. They have confidence of winning and they know how to win. Somebody has to take that away from them at some point." OL Marcus Gates On already playing a game compared to North Texas not playing "I think it's an advantage. We have to fight to correct our mistakes from [Alabama]. We're beat up and a little sore, but this is our conference rival and we want to play mistake-free, an almost perfect game." On the offense focusing on the running game "We want to be a balanced offense, unselfish, and focus on the run to gain more yards." On having a big crowd for Saturday's game "It's an edge to have a big crowd. It can affect your offensive checks and sometimes make you go to a silent count, and that can be a big plus for the home team." DL Devarick Scandrett On the close games with North Texas "It seems like every time we play there are close calls, and we have to execute on offense and defense and be ready to make the play when we need it at the end of the game. The team with the fewest mistakes will win. We have to be prepared to make the play and help us to victory. "When I got here, I think some of the players felt like the [2001] game was a fluke loss, but then it got real serious when they beat us my freshman [2002] year. This game can make or break your season. It's a big game and we'll have to be on our P's and Q's to come away with a win. I've had a lot of anticipation and nervousness and anxiety about this season, and I'm excited for this week's game. "They have a good, bonified running back, and a lot of playng defense against that is positioning. The fact we haven't seen [North Texas] on film makes it a little tougher, but we have to trust our coaches making changes throughout the game." On having a big crowd for Saturday's game "We want to know that people have our backs through thick and thin, and a big crowd really makes us play better."

The most ideal item that you can donate is bottled water however they will also accept non perishable food, diapers, soup, toothpaste and other items that will help the victims get through this most difficult time.

Over 350 Mean Green student-athletes as well as coaches and administrators have begun a collection of funds, clothing and personal items that will be distributed to the victims and their families through a collaborative effort with the Salvation Army of Denton. “This is an important cause that this department and our student-athletes feel very strongly about,” Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said. “We understand the magnitude of this tragedy and we have families within our staff and among our young people that have been directly affected by this horrendous event. We are just trying to do our part to help.” Donations will be accepted for the next three days beginning Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on the concourse inside gate 4 on the west side of Fouts Field. Mean Green student-athletes and athletic department personnel will staff the donation center. Student-athletes will also be collecting items across campus. In addition to the donation center, the North Texas football team will sponsor a special event following its practice at Fouts Field on Saturday morning to aid in the collection effort. The team will hold an open practice for the public and have players available following practice to sign autographs and mingle with fans. The team asks that anyone attending the event please bring a donation item that will be added to the collection. “Since we were originally scheduled to be playing at LSU Saturday, we thought it would be appropriate to assist with the disaster relief effort by holding an open practice where our fans could come and help,” head football coach Darrell Dickey said. The North Texas athletic department has a close association with several people affected by this event. Fellow Sun Belt Conference school’s New Orleans and South Alabama have both suffered extensive losses and are continuing to evaluate the extent of the damage. The Mean Green football team was scheduled to open the 2005 season at LSU, but was forced to postpone the game when the scope of the tragedy became apparent. A portion of the donations will also be given to help Tulane University student-athletes who have been displaced by the storm and have currently taken shelter in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The entire Mean Green Football Team is saddened over the tragedy that is playing out in Louisiana and Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They wanted to show their support and have come up with a way to do this and reach out to the fans. This Saturday, the UNT Football Team will conduct a practice open to the public at Fouts Field from 8am-10am. From 10am-12pm the team will be available to meet with the fans and sign autographs. They are asking that the fans bring non-perishable items that will be donated to the Salvation Army Fund which will go directly to the refugees and victims of Hurricane Katrina. UNT-LSU football game delayed Contest had payout for Mean Green; teams trying to reschedule 07:33 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer The University of North Texas football team’s game Saturday against Louisiana State University was postponed on Tuesday because of the damage Hurricane Katrina inflicted on the area. “We have discussed this with the people at LSU and feel like we should cancel the game,” UNT Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said. “The damage is substantial and gets worse as time goes on. Baton Rouge is becoming a triage unit for much of the New Orleans area. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and especially the student athletes on that campus who are unsure of where their families are at this time.” Officials from UNT and LSU were trying to reschedule the game on Tuesday night. The teams do not have a common open date during the season and were working to shuffle other games already on their schedules to find a date that would fit into both teams’ schedules. Villarreal said the teams hoped to reach an agreement within the next 24 hours to reschedule the game. UNT’s ability to reschedule the game could have a dramatic impact on the entire athletic department. UNT signed a contract that guaranteed a $500,000 payout to play at LSU, a total that represents a significant amount of the athletic department’s budget. The department worked with a $12.2 million dollar budget during the 2005 fiscal year that ends today. “It’s important to play this game because the guarantee is already a part of the athletic budget that we have turned in,” Villarreal said. “If we have to cancel the game, we would have to find a way to raise additional money or cut money from the budget as we go along in the year to meet the bottom line.” Villarreal said UNT would make every effort to reschedule the game. Canceling the game also left UNT without a contest heading into a key early-season game against Middle Tennessee State University to open Sun Belt Conference play. The Mean Green head into league play with a 25-game conference winning streak, which ranks second nationally to a 26-game winning streak by Boise State University in the Western Athletic Conference. Middle Tennessee is seen as one of UNT’s key rivals for the 2005 Sun Belt title. UNT is scheduled to begin the season with eight players in the starting lineup who started in the Mean Green’s loss to the University of Southern Mississippi in last season’s New Orleans Bowl. Those concerns took a backseat Tuesday while people in Louisiana were coping with a horrendous event. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people who are suffering from this disaster,” UNT coach Darrell Dickey said. “Out of respect for those involved, our team is making plans to assist in the relief effort.” The UNT-LSU game was one of several affected by the storm. The Tulane-Southern Mississippi game scheduled for Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss., has been moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Nicholls State’s game at Utah State on Saturday has been canceled. Nicholls State is located in Thibodaux, La. Also, Southern University’s game Saturday at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., has been canceled. Southern is in Baton Rouge. The North Texas football season opener against Louisiana State scheduled this Saturday in Baton Rouge has been postponed. However, the UNT football team is making plans to do what they can to help those who've been affected by the hurricane. "After discussions with the administration at LSU, they've communicated with us their desire to postpone the football game… considering the circumstances, we're in complete agreement with their decision," says UNT Athletic director Rick Villarreal. Villarreal says the scope of the hurricane's effects are becoming more evident with each passing hour and "postponing this game is the right thing to do. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this horrendous event and we will work with the LSU people to find an amicable solution when the time becomes more prudent." "Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people who are suffering from this disaster," says UNT head football coach Darrell Dickey. "Out of respect for those involved, our team is making plans to assist in the relief effort." The UNT football coaching staff is meeting tonight to discuss what they can to help and will talk with team members tomorrow. Although the stadium itself suffered only minor damage, several sites on the campus are being used as part of the recovery effort. Those locations include athletic facilities, including the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and the Bernie Moore Track Facility. A makeup date will be determined in the next few days. Meanwhile, the North Texas football team will practice as scheduled for the remainder of the week It will be up to the LSU ticket office to issue rain checks for the rescheduled date. This is terrific news from the UNT football perspective - it gives us the extra week of prep for MTSU, we get to open with a game we can win (great for confidence) and we stay healthy. We should have never scheduled a game against LSU in the first place. Fellas we have a young team and playing LSU was not going to the best thing for them right now. I'm just sorry that it had to come due to the tragedy of the Hurrican aftermath. It truly never should have been scheduled in the first place. Nothing good comes from that LSU game except the check.

That makes a whole lot of sense but they won't do that because of the $$$$$$$ The season ticket holders who are inconvenienced would ask for refunds and well let's just say BCS programs don't like writing checks for any reason - other than guaranteed wins. My guess is that they will try to reschedule the game next year or in the future because it will be tough looking at the calendar this year.

In my opinion this game shouldn't be played. 80% of New Orleans is underwater right now. It is a MAJOR Crisis. There are bodies and snakes floating throughout the city. They have instituted Marshall Law in the City meaning that if looters are caught they can be shot. Baton Rouge is having power outages and all of the police and fire are being diverted to the crisis in NO. I realize that life goes on but in this case they should allow for some time to get things stabilized. Part of the problem in NO is the fact that the levees were broken and the pumps malfunctioned. What I don't understand is if you knew that this could happen why was there no effort to ramp up the levees and replace/upgrade the pumps? Was there not any long term effort to prepare for this disaster? The Mayor and congressmen/Senators of that area should be held responsible. I would like to know how much focus was put on tourism and generating revenue compared to being proactive and protecting the city from this type of nightmare.... Sorry for the vent, but watching this on TV just makes me sick....
