  1. David McNabb posts a lot over there and appears to be tied in fairly well in the high school scene. There are also several SLC fans that have information. http://texasprepxtra.rivals.com/forum.asp?sid=984&fid=798
  2. I have been asked to provide a direct link to this for some fans: http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...0&ATCLID=721840
  3. Sonny Dykes was their Offensive coordinator no?
  4. Buford any news on Colin Mangrum? Is he being redshirted? Thanks very much for your updates.
  5. Did anyone notice this season that they changed the diamond vision pregame video to a montage that showed past stars like Mean Joe Green, Abner Haynes and Ron Shanklin, Brad Kassell, etc? I really liked what they did with that and ESPECIALLY liked the background music they used (Won't get Fooled again by the Who)... my only thought is that you should have the music go much louder and through the entire stadium instead of just the video board. I feel like we don't always use the video board to the full advantage, kind of like buying a nice TV but not hooking up the surround sound speakers for it.
  6. This is what I love, he is already getting the support of the high school coaches!
  7. Solid post I agree 100%. A strong defense will give Coach Dodge time to work out the kinks in the offense. I wonder if Bliel is being consideration.
  8. No need to disparage Coach Dickey. Coach Dodge payed him respect and we should as well.
  9. I heard this too and the Ticket talked about it at length this morning. George does so much for us!
  10. Sure would be nice if we could do better at Denton and Ryan.

Wednesday, December 13, 2006 DENTON — Todd Dodge was hired as coach at North Texas on Tuesday, making the rare jump from high schools to the top of an NCAA Division I-A program after an unprecedented run of success at Southlake Carroll. Dodge, a former Texas quarterback, has coached Carroll to a 77-1 record in the state's highest classification. The Dragons have won 46 consecutive games and are two wins from their third straight state title and fourth in five years. They have a 50-game regular-season winning streak and are the only school to win a state title in their first year in Class 5A. Carroll also won back-to-back "mythical" national championships, based on national polls, and two years ago played on ESPN2 in the first Texas high school game televised nationally. Dodge was the offensive coordinator at North Texas in 1992-93 before returning to high schools to start his head coaching career. Last year, he interviewed with Bill Parcells for an opening on the Dallas Cowboys staff, and he turned down an invitation to interview for the opening at Rice. Dodge replaces Darrell Dickey, who was fired midway through a 3-9 season that left him with a 42-64 record over nine years. "My family and I are extremely excited for the opportunity to return to the Mean Green football program, which is very near to our hearts," Dodge said in a statement. Dodge's move may hold particular interest for Westlake High School football fans. Westlake is one win away from a potential Class 5A state championship showdown with Carroll. First, Westlake faces Pearland in one state semifinal Saturday, while Carroll faces Allen in the other. Dodge had long been mentioned as a possible head coach at Westlake someday. His wife is the daughter of Westlake's longtime athletic director Ebbie Neptune, who retired in 2003. Dodge played at Texas from 1983 to 1985, starting 14 games. He completed 157 of 351 passes for 2,791 yards for Texas. North Texas averaged almost 16,000 fans per game this season, or about 30,000 fewer than the crowd for Carroll's 22-21 victory against Euless Trinity in a playoff thriller at Texas Stadium last month. The 46,339 fans for that game are thought to be the second-most for a high school game in Texas. The Dragons have been generating that kind of buzz for several years with their four-receiver, no-huddle spread offense, also known as "Dodge Ball." The latest triggerman — Dodge's son, Riley — has the Dragons rolling along at 14-0. He will have a different coach for his senior season next year, but the family won't have to move. Dodge's new office will be about 20 miles north of his old one, and his decision will raise questions about a possible reunion in college. Riley Dodge is projected as one of the state's top quarterback prospects for the 2008 recruiting season, according to Jeremy Crabtree of rivals.com. Former Carroll quarterback Chase Daniel is now the Missouri starter who led the Tigers to a 6-0 start and will play in the Sun Bowl in El Paso in a couple of weeks.
  12. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...bc/4398430.html Dec. 13, 2006, 12:08AM Dodge takes North Texas job Coach has led Southlake Carroll to three state titles DENTON - Todd Dodge was hired as coach at North Texas on Tuesday, making the rare jump from high school to Division I-A after an unprecedented run of success at Southlake Carroll. Dodge, a former Texas quarterback, has coached Carroll to a 77-1 record in Texas' highest classification. The Dragons have won 46 consecutive games and are two wins from their third straight state title and fourth in five years. They have a 50-game regular-season winning streak. "I'm representing Texas high school coaches," Dodge said in a news conference in front of about 150 North Texas boosters and fans. "It's not very often that a guy like me gets an opportunity like this." Dodge was the offensive coordinator at UNT in 1992-93. Last year, he interviewed with Bill Parcells for an opening on the Dallas Cowboys staff, and he turned down an interview for the opening at Rice. "All those were flattering," said Dodge, who admitted he thought the call from Parcells was a joke being played on him by a fellow coach. "Last year about this time Rice called and showed interest in me. It was one of those deals that didn't fit my family at the time." Dodge replaces Darrell Dickey, who was fired midway through a 3-9 season that left him with a 42-64 record over nine years. Under Dickey, the Mean Green went to the New Orleans Bowl as Sun Belt Conference champion four straight times from 2001-04. North Texas averaged almost 16,000 fans per game, or about 30,000 fewer than the crowd for Carroll's playoff 22-21 win against Euless Trinity at Texas Stadium last month.
  13. http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/...13.4079f1d.html Brett Vito: New head coach enjoys early backing of Mean Green faithful 11:56 PM CST on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 Brett Vito North Texas traded in the Buick for a bright, shiny new Dodge on Tuesday. Todd Dodge, with his wide-open spread offense, his state championship pedigree and a monster reputation in Texas high school football, will leave Southlake Carroll to return to the school where he was the offensive coordinator a little more than a decade ago. The move certainly wasn't the most conservative UNT has ever made. The Mean Green could have hired a coordinator from another college program or a head coach from a smaller school. In the end, UNT made the best choice for the program for numerous reasons, none of which are more important than the excitement the hire has created. By mid-morning, the Mean Green nation was buzzing for the first time in years. "It's a great day for North Texas," UNT booster Curtis Clinesmith said. "I can't think of a more exciting day in North Texas history. Coach Dodge will bring excitement to the program and has a proven track record. The main thing that excites me is that he is a positive individual. There was a negative atmosphere for the last four or five years." Former UNT head coach Darrell Dickey led the Mean Green to an unprecedented run of success from 2001-04 when his teams won the Sun Belt Conference title and played in the New Orleans Bowl each of those years. By the end of Dickey's tenure, the excitement from those bowl years had all but disappeared and some had tired of a run-based offense nicknamed the Buick because it was effective at times, but rarely flashy. If anyone can bring a buzz to Fouts Field again it's Dodge and his high-octane offense. Carroll has more or less blazed the trail for wide-open offenses in Texas high school football. The Dragons run wide receivers all over the field and still have a running game. Dodge's son Riley has thrown for 3,695 yards and 48 touchdowns this season. When Riley was struggling with a series of minor injuries last week in the state quarterfinals, the Dragons turned to running back Tre' Newton, who rushed for 296 yards and brought Carroll one step closer to its fourth state title since 2002 with a win over Colleyville Heritage. There are plenty of indications that Dodge's offense will thrive at UNT just like it did at Carroll. Dodge served as UNT's offensive coordinator from 1992-93. UNT Hall of Famer Mitch Maher threw for 2,090 yards in 1992 and came back the next year to throw for 2,595 yards while playing for Dodge. Maher still ranks third and sixth in school history for passing yards in a single season for the campaigns he played under Dodge. A year after Dodge left, Maher set the school record for passing with 3,103 yards in the 1994 season. That history and Dodge's reputation should open the recruiting pipeline from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. UNT has struggled to land the top prospects from the area the last several years. Ryan head coach Joey Florence has had his share of top recruits the last few seasons and anticipates a few more of the area's elite players heading to UNT because of the buzz Dodge has created. "They have hired the best guy they could," Florence said. "Todd will bring instant credibility with the kids, the parents and the high school coaches across the state. The connections college coaches have with the high school staffs are vital. … It will be a great hire for recruiting." UNT landed one of its highest-rated recruiting classes after its third straight appearance in the New Orleans Bowl in 2003 when the Mean Green signed four players ranked in The Dallas Morning News Area Top 100 rankings, plus running back Jamario Thomas, a consensus state top 100 player who went on to win a national rushing title at UNT. The Mean Green's success in luring the area's top-ranked players dwindled the last few seasons. That should change under Dodge. "As far as recognition around the state I don't think there is anyone we could have hired who would have brought more attention to the program," said Harry Miers, the founder of gomeangreen.com, a UNT fan message board. "He brings an exciting brand of football that fans will enjoy and will boost our recruiting efforts in Dallas-Fort Worth." UNT has designs on building a new stadium in the next few years and moving up in the world of college football. UNT will need all the help it can get to make that goal a reality. Hiring Dodge was a step in the right direction, judging by what UNT's fans had to say Tuesday. "I don't think there is any question this will help us get a new stadium," said Clinesmith, who stopped giving money to UNT four years ago because he was not happy with the program. "People will come back that would not have contributed with Dickey there. I think the hiring will resonate through the donor community." BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870. 14. http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/...12.13cccf5.html Dodge ball: UNT hires Southlake Carroll coach to lead program Dodge's offensive philosophy could take time to implement 11:46 PM CST on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer The offensive philosophies of new North Texas head coach Todd Dodge and the man he is replacing couldn't be much different. Dodge runs a wide-open spread offense that has produced three state championship teams since 2002 at Southlake Carroll. Darrell Dickey produced a pair of national rushing champions with his mow-them-down running attack that finally fell flat the last two seasons before he was fired Nov. 8. DRC/Gary Payne Southlake Carroll coach Todd Dodge was named the new head coach at North Texas on Tuesday at the Mean Green Athletic Center. The change in philosophy will present a challenge for Dodge, who will teach his offense to a whole new batch of players after taking over as UNT's head coach on Tuesday. UNT will return 16 starters for its first season under Dodge, including former national rushing champion Jamario Thomas. "The biggest thing will be to get in, teach and evaluate how our offense will fit the personnel that we have," Dodge said. "I look forward to teaching it. It's a similar to the situation when I got to Southlake Carroll seven years ago. They had an almost opposite style." Dodge will have to rebuild the Mean Green's corps of receivers and find a quarterback to fit his passing system in addition to teaching it. UNT rotated three players at quarterback over the last two seasons, but never settled on a starter. Daniel Meager, Woody Wilson and Matt Phillips will all be juniors next season. UNT ranked last in the Sun Belt Conference in passing offense in 2006 with an average of 115.2 yards a game and was sixth out of eight teams in passing efficiency with a 96.4 ranking while rotating the trio. Dodge said he had not decided whether he would pursue a junior college quarterback. "The first thing I have to do is evaluate the quarterbacks that are here on this campus before we go anywhere else," Dodge said. UNT struggled in the passing game despite having what Dickey called the best corps of receivers in his nine-year tenure with the team. Johnny Quinn set the Mean Green's career records for receptions (187) and receiving yards (2,728) before completing his career. Joel Nwigwe played his final season with the Mean Green in 2006. Zach Muzzy, another senior, is expected to be granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA because he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fourth week of his freshman season in 2003 against Arkansas. Muzzy exceeded the NCAA's limit for a medical redshirt season when he was injured on a kickoff return before the Mean Green's first possession of the game. Muzzy said earlier this year he was fairly certain he would be granted an extra year of eligibility, but would not decide whether he would return until after the holidays. Dodge has yet to talk to Muzzy. Dickey said after his last game with the Mean Green that he thought the team had the players it needs to make a run at the Sun Belt Conference title in the coming seasons. Junior defensive end Jeremiah Chapman and sophomore punter Truman Spencer were second-team All-Sun Belt selections last season and head a small number of returning UNT players who received all-conference honors. Junior linebacker Maurice Holman and junior safety Aaron Weathers were honorable mention all-conference selections and will also be back next season to form the core of Dodge's first team at UNT. "There are good football players here," Dodge said. "They will have to be real open to doing some things a different way. The way they have been doing it is not wrong, but our system is a little different. I look forward to teaching our system." Briefly … Dodge will not coach in the U.S. Army All-America Bowl next year because it is against NCAA rules for a college coach to work the game. BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870. 15. http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/...13.405c6af.html NT picks new football coach 11:59 PM CST on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer When Southlake Carroll High School head coach Todd Dodge first talked to University of North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal about coaching the Mean Green, some fond memories came rushing back. Dodge was at UNT for only two seasons as an assistant coach, but it was a time that helped convince him to leave behind one of the most successful high school programs in the country to return to the college level and take over a program he believes is full of potential. Dodge, 43, was introduced in front of a crowd of more than 100 at the Mean Green Athletic Center on Tuesday night as UNT’s 16th head coach. “Ever since I coached here in 1992 and 1993 and I left, it was two of my favorite years in 21 years of coaching,” Dodge said. “I enjoyed coaching the college-level athlete. … North Texas can turn into the metroplex’s team. This place has unbelievable upside. I am not telling anyone anything they don’t know.” Dodge replaced former head coach Darrell Dickey, who was fired in the middle of his ninth season with the Mean Green on Nov. 8. More than 100 coaches applied to replace Dickey before UNT selected Dodge because of his history of success and approach to the game. “When we starting doing this, I wanted to make sure that we thought about the kids first,” Villarreal said. “What showed through in his interview was his affection for his kids.” Dodge has quickly become a commodity on the coaching market because of his success at Carroll. The Dragons won state championships in 2002, 2004 and 2005 in addition to winning the USA Today national title in 2004 and the Prepnation.com title in 2005. Carroll will play Allen High School on Saturday at Texas Stadium for a spot in this season’s Class 5A Division I championship game. Dodge interviewed with Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells for a job as an assistant last year before deciding to remain at his position at Carroll. Dodge will finish his season at Carroll before taking over at UNT and building a staff that he said could include some current Mean Green assistants. The possibility of coaching two more games at Carroll has special meaning for Dodge because his son, Riley, is the Dragons’ starting quarterback. “It was tough to leave Carroll,” Dodge said. “I am very proud of what we have built. I was proud of being part of a place that has great tradition.” UNT officials think Dodge will help establish a winning legacy with the Mean Green with a high-powered passing offense he installed at Carroll and used in his first stint with the Mean Green. UNT used a run-based offense under Dickey. Former UNT quarterback Mitch Maher played two seasons under Dodge and went on to become the Mean Green’s all-time leading passer and a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Riley Dodge has thrown for 3,695 yards and 48 touchdowns this season. “Coach Dodge was a great teacher, motivator and an intense competitor,” Maher said. “His attitude made him fun to play for.” Dodge met with his new players briefly after his press conference. “I am really excited,” UNT wide receiver Brandon Jackson said. “It’s a great opportunity for the guys on the team to make plays. I am a receiver, so you know I want to see the ball in the air. It will bring a lot more excitement to the team. More people will come and watch us.” The opportunity to build another winner on the college level was too attractive for Dodge to pass up, especially after he built Carroll into a national powerhouse. “Being wanted was the first thing that attracted me to this job,” Dodge said. “We have accomplished all we could at Carroll, and I had the chance to coach my son.” BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870.
