  3. Born and raised in Norfolk, Va. Circa 1970, my high school band and orchestra director had once been the band director of Roy Miller HS in Corpus Christi. He told me about North Texas and suggested I apply there, and so I did. I will immodestly say I was accepted to the top East Coast music schools but as North Texas offered me a full ride, it was a no-brainer. For reasons I'll not go into here, the school was, and remains, a very special place to me.

  4. My story starts in El Paso. I was attending UTEP and life was going alone smoothly. All of sudden life had some big changes I lost my parents and was on my own. I started thinking more about my future and what I was going to do. I want to find a school that had a job market after school. We were in the big recession and jobs were really hard to find, especially in El Paso. Oh yeah my girlfriend at the time was dating my friend without my knowledge. It was time to reset my life. So I decide to go to the UTEP football game one Saturday night. They were playing this team from North Texas State University. Loved the green uniforms and did some research on NTSU and were it was located. NTSU and University of Houston both fit what I was looking for so looked at both carefully. Scratched U of H off the list because it was located in a big city. NTSU had the program I was interested in and it was in a small town but close to a big city. Never every regretted my choice to schools. I had a lot of friends at Tech and I visited them and just not like Lubbock that much so I never considered them. Fell in love with Denton and NTSU and finished my degree. Move to Albuquerque, NM for a job and stayed there for 30 years. When my wife and I decided to retire we decide Albuquerque, NM was not place to be. I do miss the Mexican food and sunsets and mountains but that was it. We decided to retire in Denton, TX because is small and had low crime and so I could attend the NtSU games and kayak. Sorry to see Denton growing so much though, we are becoming more and more like any other suburb but more run down lol. There is no place I rather be and love to be at the games even though it can be an upsetting event.

  5. Please, for those that report "Breaking News" - After a couple of days, remove the words "Breaking News" from the headline. After a few days, it's no longer "Breaking News."

  6. On a full scholarship. This must be a heck of a punter.

  7. First Aussie in UNT history? I can't recall one in the last 16 years following the program. I guess we are going to start doing shoeys when he nails punts.

  8. Honestly, I think the fight against the P5-G5 distinction is a losing battle. If you break the P5-G5 naming convention, someone will come up with something new to distinguish the two groups.

  9. So we are limited but TCU and SMU are not? We should always recruit our “home area” first. We should have relationships with all the schools but especially the traditional powers like Duncanville. There is another thread about a young man from Denton High. I don’t think we ever contacted him or set foot on their campus. That doesn’t mean we will sign a local kid every year, but we should have those relationships in place.

  10. Tell that to UTSA fans. They think he's over critical of UTSA. People just love to hate writers because they don't constantly pump up their favorite team. He just predicted us to go 7-5 next year. That's way more optimistic than a lot of people here think.

  11. Maybe NT is not interested or did contact him and there was no interest from him. Per you, there is too much talent in the area; frankly NT or any other school is limited in the number of recruits they can significantly invest in.

  12. Where is the bias in this post. I agree with him. Now, I also think he is a total DB with his usual homerisms for utsa, here he is just responding to that moronic tweet.
    2 points
  13. What's biased about what he said? You agree that UTSA would go 5-7 in the SBC? I sure don't.
    2 points
  14. The claim itself is absurd. UTSA would do very well in the Sun Belt the same as they have in CUSA the last couple of years. I don't think Craven hates UNT, he's just a massive UTSA homer, and it bleeds into his writing and gets quite annoying. We, as a collective fanbase on Twitter and on GMG, call him out for it all the time and it makes him mad. For all I care he can kick rocks, but DCTF is one of the only outlets that covers UNT on a broader basis (albeit very poorly at times). I don't hate the guy. He just wears his orange and blue on his sleeve, much like we wear green on ours. Problem is he's the lead college writer that is supposed to be unbiased against ALL Texas universities, and he isn't.

  15. Only aTm would have a maroon out against an opponent that’s maroon. There’s an aggie joke in there somewhere🤣🤣

  16. You need to get real. There's a reason Tylor Perry could only muster 6MOTY in 21-22 pal. It's because JJ is, and forever will be, the GOAT.

  18. https://247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/article/micah-robinson-tcu-smu-lsu-mississippi-state-illinois-210725652/ Makes me want to barf reading his thoughts on smu. Why we haven't been in contact is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I like our JUCO and portal recruiting so far, but we should take the same approach as the new football staff and hit the local schools. Too much talent in this area to not even reach out.

  20. I THINK La Tech has beaten us 8 of the last 10 times we have played. I also THINK Arkansas State has beaten us the last 10 times we have played. I am too lazy to look up but am sure someone will correct me.

  21. I don’t, but it was recently reported that McCasland didn’t recruit locally much, if at all. I just think we should be recruiting and have relationships with the local schools, especially the local power teams like Duncanville.

  24. My guess is it was an obvious decision. Play football at an at least perceived much higher level with my guess a lot more compensation. NIL is going to ruin what's left of college football, there is simply no way a AAC or CUSA team is going to be able to keep their best players from teams with more financial support

  26. They were pretty bad last year, and although they got a ton of transfers, only a couple look like anything great as far as I can tell (QB from Boise, and a former 4 star from Baylor) They should be better but not great. They always seem to play tough though

  27. Where have you been? We do not get much respect from many media outlets, other fan's, etc., etc. This is not surprising, or upsetting, get over it and used to it. When we earn respect we will get it. Welcome to UNT.

  28. And his JUCO success was due to him thriving in that type of system? Ah yes but that was JUCO so that doesn't count because the level of competition wasn't the same. At some point you have to realize it's the player and not the system. And I'm sorry but our system did nothing to help talented scoring players such as himself. At KStates he's going to have more space and a faster pace that should give him more open chances unlike the press he'd see as soon as he hit the halfcourt last season. As long as the lights don't get too bright,he'll be fine.

  32. If it was for money and higher competition, yes. If it was about post-football life and athletic legacy, no. IF they get on the field and make it to the next level, it will be worth it to them. If they don't, they'll hit the real world like any other athlete... maybe with less support from either alumni base.

  33. Wrong thread, but I will bite. Hypothetical question. How much of TPs success was due to him thriving in this type of system. I will hang up and listen.

  35. I agree we needed a coaching change, but they waited way to long to fire Seth, they were several weeks into the transfer window when they announced a new coach. Seth should have been fired no later then week 8, and a new coach should have been named before the transfer window opened.

  38. Answered my own question...seems pretty loosey goosey with only some "basic guidelines" and a someone who "brought credit" to the University and had a "special impact" on Mean Green Athletics. https://meangreensports.com/form/11 Established in 1981, the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame acknowledges former student-athletes, coaches, and administrators whose accomplishments brought credit to the University of North Texas and had a special impact on Mean Green athletics. Any person may nominate an individual for consideration by the North Texas Hall of Fame Selection Committee. The following are basic guidelines for considering a nominee: The person should have made an outstanding contribution to North Texas athletics. The person should have an honorable and respectable image since leaving the University of North Texas. Candidates are not eligible for induction until at least five years after they left the University of North Texas. Stronger consideration will be given those student-athletes who graduated from the University of North Texas. Nominees are placed on the ballot by the North Texas Hall of Fame Selection Committee, which is made up of 10 individuals with strong ties to UNT (including multiple Hall of Fame members) and have been designated by the athletic department, including the president of the North Texas Letterwinners Association. The Selection Committee will place 10 names on the ballot each year, with no more than five nominees from any one sport. The final ballot will be distributed to the following voters: active, dues-paying members of the Letterwinners Association; HOF inductees and McCain Award recipients; and the Selection Committee. A maximum of six former athletes, coaches, and administrators may be inducted in a year (including the McCain Award honoree, if presented). No more than three individuals from any one sport may be selected in any year. Nominees are not selected for induction are automatically rolled onto the ballot the next year and the selection committee will fill the remaining ballot slots at their annual meeting. A nominee may remain on the ballot for five consecutive years and then must roll off for at least one year before reconsideration by the Selection Committee. No more than six individuals are inducted into the Hall of Fame each year. To nominate someone for consideration for the Hall of Fame, fill out the form below and click Submit Form. Or you can print out the completed form and mail it to: North Texas Athletics Department ATTN: Eric Capper 1155 Union Circle #311397 Denton, TX 76203

  39. it could be a luxury, but I don't really think we "need" any more size than what is already on the roster. looking across our AAC foes and really the entire college basketball landscape, save for maybe the absolute elite programs most everyone is running out at least 3 if not 4 guards around a "center" who really is more of a classic power forward. my assumption on the starting line-up, at least early on, next season: 1. Rubin Jones - 6'5" 190 2. John Buggs III - 6'3" 185 3. Matt Stone - 6'4" 205 4. Aaron Scott - 6'7" 200 (that feels small...he at least plays bigger) 5. Moulaye Sissoko - 6'9" 240 that's plenty of size across the whole floor, especially the way they team defend and team rebound. I anticipate we'll still use a pretty tight 8 man rotation...Allen the Ole Miss transfer is 6'8" 230 and will likely be the primary 4/5 back-up...if Morgan gets his line up to something like 2ppg, 2rpg in 20 appearances, I'll call it a win...Edwards I'm assuming will be the primary bench scorer with Moore growing into a contributing role throughout the season. no clue on Cotton. with all that in place, my priority with the open spots would be an upgrade to Stone at the 3...an experienced tough 6'5"-ish guard who rebounds and shoots 35%+ from 3 and can play some PF in a small line-up. maybe then a wirey 6'7"-ish high school kid...raw with some upside...I think we're looking for one more immediate contributor and an upside project with the final scholarships

  40. Much like "stars" from recruiting services, portal players aren't always what they're cracked up to be, but usually are. When a player out of high school chooses UNT to get early playing time, or get close to home, or because he likes the coach, nobody on here bats an eye. But if they are transferring to get playing time, or get closer to home, or because they didn't like the coach, somehow it's questionable. If a player isn't getting enough playing time at Texas A&M and wants to come to SMU or UNT to get it, that's not some kind of bad thing or a mark of a bad player. I'll take that all day long.

  41. I like to think I'm a diehard fan. Outside of @MGNation92 trying to create a collective aside from LTT, I've not been contacted. So if the diehards aren't being reached out to, the casuals aren't even being thought of. Reminds me of the athletic department a decade ago. Oh, wait...

  43. So Jaelon Darden and Jalen Guyton are eligible because they left early for the NFL but if they’d have gone to Alabama or Georgia instead it would be a no-go?
