  1. Sunday night at 8 central on ESPNU https://fansided.com/2023/03/10/nit-selection-show-2023-bracket-time-date-channel-watch/

  2. Tina Slinker's winning percentage after 8 years here was 35%. She stayed on for another 11 years. Jalie's percentage is at 47% after 8 seasons. Slinker's percentage for her entire 19 years was at 46%. Of course Slinker gets inducted into the UNT Hall of Fame. I agree that we need to make a change and I understand that leadership has changed; where 35% wouldn't be acceptable today. We desperately need some Hall of Fame standards in place for coaches and players. Is it asking too much for a coach to win 51% of their games?

  3. Looks like UAB expended their blind luck in the first ten minutes against us last night* *Not saying UAB isn’t a quality squad, but they couldn’t have played like they did that first ten minutes (and had us play worse) if they got to script their wildest dreams

  4. Yeah, 11, 12, 13 and 14 loss teams. It's a joke.

  5. Pleasantly surprised by how high we still are. Don't think we have a chance to go Dancin'. But what will hack me off....is we will see numerous P5s with lower NET rankings than us.....get in as At Larges. Love this team.....looking forward to them doing some damage....in whatever postseason tourney we're in. (most likely the NIT).

  6. Memphis is up 15 points at the half over #1 ranked Houston. I can’t wait for UNT to have a conference that should get multiple bids. Pulling for this upset

  7. I disagree. Just like we don't need human judgment in the CFB playoff, we don't need it for the NCAA tourney. Human element in these instances are always going to lean to bigger brand for more eyeballs, always.

  8. Never forget how NCAA logic works. Why is Team A ranked despite their losses? “Because they play in such a tough conference” And what makes that conference so tough? “Because it’s filled with ranked teams”

  9. They’ll point to our lack of Q1 games and completely turn a blind eye to the fact that these same teams they’re putting in the dance wanted no part of scheduling us. It’s frustrating.

  10. That would be a very winnable region. I’m still holding out a sliver of hope for NCAA tourney but having a legit chance to win the whole NIT would be awesome.

  11. No. It's not definitely. Since the NET has been around, I believe only 5 teams with a NET of 40 or better have missed out on the big dance. We'd be number 6. The first 5 were actually power conference schools snubbed for mid-majors. There were no bid thiefs this year so we could still make it unless they want power conference teams with NETs in the 60s like Michigan, Arizona State, Pitt, and Clemson. Seems like a long shot but not all hope is gone.

  12. We are at 38 in NET and 45 KENPOM. With very few if any bid steals and our 9-2 road 5-2 neutral records. We are a tournament team this year.

  13. That's not how it works.

  14. It’s a staffer. Don’t have a name. It will be announced after spring break. Heard they turned down P5 opportunity to come here

  15. I think every conference needs a bid or you end up with the mess that is college football. Every now and then, a small program from a nobody conference makes a crazy run à la St Peter's last year. Those runs are what make March Madness great. My issue is actually how many bids conferences can get. I personally think bids should be earned by recent conference performance with a minimum of 1 bid allocated to each conference. If you're like the MWC and went 0-4 last year, maybe you shouldn't get 4 bids this year. If you're like the Big 10 and 8 of your 9 bids were out by the 2nd round in 2022, maybe you shouldn't get 9 bids in 2023. There's quality teams all over. It's problematic when a good team doesn't get a bid because they got upset in their conference tournament but an 18-14 power conference school can get in without showing anything. The little guy never gets a chance to show what they can do without the AQ.

  16. This was his first losing season there and he dealt with a lot of injury problems. This was not really a 20 loss team. Giving autobids to "terrible" conferences is the only reason anybody other than the top 8 leagues gets anyone in.

  17. Is it possible to have the success of a Grant McGasland but with a more entertaining brand of basketball; that packs the arena? Yes, I'd like to have some cake and eat it to.

  18. The man can recruit and has an exciting branch of basketball. Ain't gonna happen but I'd sign on to a return. The bigger question is would he have enough fire left in his career @ age 61.

  21. The unsaid, overseen, and never said metric is TV obligations and filing those obligations during selection time.

  22. Of course it doesn't matter. None of it does. It's bullshit in every way imaginable. And Toledo had arguably a better season and resum than us and they're on the outside looking in.

  23. Up 14 with 4 mins to go. With UAB and FAU coming too our basketball conference is about to be really solid. Gonna be fun playing SMU in basketball 🙂

  24. Here is where the “big school” versus “small school” argument will never be truly fair. If I put the NBA Western Conference All-Star team in North Texas jerseys and had them play our current schedule, they would go 34-0 and win every game by a minimum of 30 points. And the selection committee would put them in the NCAA tournament with a worse seed than the champion of several “power 5” leagues. Granted, we’d pull off a couple “upsets” on our way to the title, but the rankings/seedings would be a joke.

  25. But in the pros, say the NFL where all division winners get in the playoffs, you wouldn't put the 2nd best team from a division in the playoffs simply because you view their division and/or schedule as tougher. You win the games in front of you and after the division winners, whoever has the best record gets in. You don't get the benefit of your division-mates being good.
    3 points
  26. True. But the parameters are set and widely known and there is no pulling strings behind closed doors making sure X team makes the playoffs from Y division. They either do or they don't.

  27. More NIT bracket predictions (good news and bad news).... This bracket lists NIT teams by Net, which we are not on, (implying we're in NCAA Tourney)... https://theresourcenexus.com/nit-bracketology/ This bracket lists us as a 3-seed in the NIT (along with UAB)... https://www.dratings.com/predictor/bracketology/

  28. Kinda goofy, but if it inspires us into a winning culture, just roll with it.

  29. Because it’s all a joke…..

  30. I don't think the committee should only use the NET. It's one tool among several to look at. Still it sucks when schools that have 8-10 league records get in.

  31. Absolutely horrible take.

  32. I don't think we are under any serious consideration. And I love all my bracketology blogs and pods, but I don't think any of the major sports news guys are thinking of us in any way other than "on the outside looking in." The only glimmer of hope I can find is that, apparently, very few bid-stealers emerged this year. But I haven't read into that, so I don't know. Final thought: if by some miracle a second CUSA bid is given, wouldn't the edge be given to UAB?

  33. If you went by NET alone, we would be in. The power conference bubble teams that ESPN has getting in all have NET ratings far below NT's. It's really ridiculous.

  34. That luck carried them all game yesterday. I recall a defensive possession where the ball got loose. Ousmane and Jones both dive for the ball and neither come up with it. They actually got in each others' way. The UAB player watching the play ended up with the ball. Happened several times.

  35. You gotta give everyone a shot. Saint Peter's got to the Elite 8 last season.

  36. As much as I love him, I wouldn't want Coach Jones back. Not because I think we're too good for him, but because coaches who leave a place and then come back rarely have the success they did the first time.

  38. Maybe I watched a different game but yesterday's scoring drought to start the game was not due to offensive holes or lack of ball movement; players simply weren't finishing "easy" shots. I went back through the ESPN play-by-play for these numbers: Abou missed a dunk and a lay-up, huntsberry missed 2 free throws on 1 trip and missed 3 layups, and Perry missed a lay-up. All this in the first 10ish minutes. That doesn't include post shots and open jumpers that were missed. From lay-ups, a dunk, and Kai's early empty trip to the FT line, that's 14 points right there that we didn't get. UNT was not outmatched. Just couldn't get the shots to drop early. This team beats UAB almost any other day. Just a rough start yesterday. It happens to everybody but for our guys it happened at the worst time.

  39. It was awesome. So many North Texas fans did such an excellent job of representing and promoting our university this week. The rest wore gray and black for some reason.

  40. I am recording the game until I can watch it. Glad no won has posted the score. That being said I think FAU will win easily.

  42. We lost because we couldn't get anything to go through that round orange hoop for way too long. Jelly is good but he didn't put them up 22-2 by making 5-pt shots (although 4pt plays gets close). It was because we made something like 1 of our first 20 shots.

  43. I don't know that the basketball situation at UTSA can be improved very much in one year. What they need is a new gymnasium. I doubt that many of the top notch basketballers are impressed with the current facility. They likely can't afford to build a new facility or rent a larger facility. It has to be a turnoff for the coach and prospects. I predict that the next coach will suffer just as much as the current coach has. He might be able to get some decent Division II players but the really good players like facilities at least as good as their current school so they can feel like they are in Division I.

  44. Having a DFW team not named SMU should help boost attendance, too.

  45. I too will be watching. If UAB steals it, you're looking at 2 tournament teams which we haven't had in a while. I personally haven't lost hope for UNT either. A NET of 38 as of today when the field will be finalized. Every other bubble team either crapped the bed yesterday or earlier in the week. Hope is alive as long as OH State, Vanderbilt, and Cincinnati lose today. Those are the last three possible bubble thiefs.

  47. This exercise is called “midnight maneuvers” and has been in the Morris’ playbook from day 1 as a head coach back in 2018. The ONLY reason there is Mike Leach branding on this is because Leach was Morris’ friend and mentor and he died just a few months ago. If Mike Leach is still alive, this is simply called midnight maneuvers and you are excited to see the team working hard. Get over yourself, this is a Morris thing, not a North Texas thing.
