  1. Coach Mac made the call for a new basketball facility. Says we need to have a place that's tough to play. Moulaye Sissoko was the guest, he's only been playing basketball since he was 15. Grew up playing soccer. He can speak 6 languages, fluent in 4. Impressive young man.

  2. It all comes down to $$$ and name recognition in the end. We come up short on both. We have to win the tournament. Our ranking will be irrelevant.

  3. UTSA is one of the worst D1 basketball programs I have ever seen. The top D2 teams would beat them and they can't even remain competitive in CUSA. The AAC is going to eat them alive next season.

  4. All those great Mean Green jackets that everyone is wearing: A guy has been wearing one at b-ball games this season. So I asked him....where he got it. Here's the site: https://customiceddesigns.com/products/mean-green-jacket?variant=39509707489353

  5. As I stated before no G5 and many P5’s won’t be able to compete with SMU on NIL. That doesn’t mean you will get results on the field as seen this year.

  7. Noticed that Ricky Evans is in most of the photos with Taylor. He also has a Mean Green jacket on. A 2024 WR that was recently offered. Curious if they are related.

  9. Thank you @greenminer for keeping our history straight and how Joe was never referred to as “Mean” Joe Greene until after a Pittsburgh sports writer would call him that a season or two later. To Steeler fans he was entirely unknown. Here’s two articles from the Pittsburgh press clippings after the 1969 draft in which disgruntled fans expressed their negative opinions about Knole’s pick of the unheard of D lineman from an unheard of school, one quoted with “it’s a typical Steeler pick”. 10. Yup. No more excuses. He's got his QB (He signed Stone right before he took the Miami job). He's got his players, 6 of which were at Miami with him. A majority of the transfers were starters at their previous schools. Its time to win some games.

  12. Our brand is growing, Mean Green Nation. We are spending unprecedented amounts on our football program, as well as our department in general. We have one of the best coaches in our school history leading our basketball program. Eric Morris is going to lead our football program to new heights. Coach O and Co are going to put our footprint on the DFW high school recruiting market. We will no longer be ignored or unknown in the nations best resource for football talent. Jared Mosely, the perfect AD for us, has been hired and will be leading us into the top G5 conference in the land. Why do I bring all of this up? We need to be passionate as ever about 1) Getting our history right, and 2) Getting our name right. Tell people about Big Joe, not just Mean Joe. Stomp your foot (adult like), look people in the eye, and explain to them that it has been 30+ years since we were called North Texas State and it's about damn time they stopped calling us that. The time is now. Love y'all. Go Mean Green.

  13. Hey Green Joe, I run a website dedicated to our Mean Green Moniker. I don't have a ton of resource$ to make it look pretty, but Randy himself was kind enough to give me permission to put the digital transcription up. He was very clear in our communications about Big Joe being Big Joe. It was also clear how much he loved covering that team and talking about Fry. https://meangreenmoniker.com/thearticle/ @DeepGreen @FirefightnRick I still have your digital scan somewhere. I'll dig it up. I could have sworn I put it up on the site for people to click/download. I will maintain this until I see otherwise: we are NOT named AFTER Joe Greene. Randy feels that way too. We might be called Mean Green because of Greene's play, but we are not named after him.

  16. Went back and watched/listened to some of the game and we did great. Especially when the clock hit all zeroes and everybody cheered, almost drained out the commentators. They sucked, but do have to give them credit for mentioning the travelling Mean Green fanbase a few times. Don't recall the UTA announcers saying anything about us in December.

  17. Tudor Fieldhouse looks like another High School gym on steroids. We are so lucky to have a great modern-looking facility like the SuperPit, and to be able to even be thinking about replacing it in the future.

  19. On3 is toying with the idea of changing the weighting to 35% On3/247 and 15% rivals/ESPN. This would be a good thing for G5s IMO.

  20. Tough game. We've been seeing some different things lately like driving into the lane by both Perry and Huntsberry, backdoor cuts, Sissoko getting more minutes, etc. Let's hope the put it all together for this game and take the W.

  21. I agree that they are coming into form, but so are we. the last four games have gone well, especially that W over Rice. It'll be a good game, but i'm hoping our crowd crushes it

  24. Mostly agree, but a big part of our portal activity this year was to upgrade the run game. We brought in 4 new OL, two of which have spent entire seasons as a starter at P5s, one was a top 100 HS player a year ago, and the 4th is a depth guy from UT. We also brought in a former starting RB from Miami when Rhett was there, and the #5 RB from the 2021 class who played a little at A&M. Also bring back our Bama transfer who started to come on late, and our former walk-on bruiser who wears a neckroll (fan favorite for obvious reasons). The upgraded run game *should* take some pressure off of Stone, which is a luxury Mordecai didn't have this year with our abysmal run game. Lashlee's offense is predicated on strong run game and mobile QB, neither of which we had last year.

  25. Agreed. It was his first year as a head coach and he won 7 games. I thought we could be an 8 or 9 win team last year but those two nail biter losses to Cincinnati and Maryland put us a bit off schedule. If he doesn't win 9 games or more this year I'll be concerned, especially given the massive talent upgrade through the portal. Rhett knows this. Comes with the territory.

  26. First year head coach that had a couple of really nice wins against Houston and Memphis. One score losses to TCU and Cincinnati were tough but kind of expected that in his first year. Fully expect RL (and the staff) to be better next season. You're right that NIL doesn't guarantee anything but I'll take my chances with having a Top 20 NIL over not having it.

  27. I think it was a decent first year for Rhett given the fallout from Sonny. He's pulled in a top five transfer class in the nation and currently has two four star high school recruits committed for 2024. With the financial resources he enjoys at SMU another 7 or 8 win season won't be acceptable. He knows this.

  28. Exactly, and why I pay ZERO attention to the rankings services. Considering the circumstances I am excited for what Morris has done and can only imagine how little I would give a $hit if Littrell was still here. Rick

  29. As you point out, the most questionable transfers are from Miami...... where Rhett just coached them and knows first hand if they weren't playing because they were busts or if they were just behind a better ACC stud. We had some severe deficiencies last year and serviceable ACC backups are major upgrades. Some transfers are for depth (another critical deficiency) and may not start, but is still a major upgrade over the disastrous 2nd string we were dealing with previously. The QB is a special case - not expected to play, knows that, and wants to coach. Job is to come, bring a P5 mindset, help coach Stone and KHJ, and not be a disaster if he has to play. We needed a prime WR1, didn't get it, needed more TE help, but overall MASSIVE, MASSIVE upgrade to total team talent. NIL is a miracle. An NIL player is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

  35. "Big Joe" sounds like context or just a description used by Galloway after he mentions in the previous sentence in that article of him being 6-4, 280 to describe the size of Greene, but I do not believe anyone else called him that. I have not seen or heard of it any other time. You and others are correct in that the nickname "Mean Green" is in reference to the play of our defense back then and not specifically a nickname of Joe Greene then. Here is one version of the Mean Green nickname origin from Randy Cummings, DRC... https://meangreensports.com/sports/2018/7/6/trads-MeanGreen-html Here is another variation of how the Mean Green nickname evolved... https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/08/mean-green-mean-joe-green-nickname-origins

  38. Has anyone pointed this out....about the rankings? When we first signed Jayven Anderson....it was noted that he was our top recruit ever (since 247 had been doing rankings). He was listed at the bottom of our signees (as at the very bottom, they rank our top ten recruits ever) as being #1 overall. And as I recall....his 247 score was .88-something. Now you go to 247....and look at the same list....he has suddenly dropped to our 4th best overall. And his 247 ranking is .8726. Not sure what happened....unless it's the typical "discounting" of players....once they sign with UNT. I love this class. What Coach Morris and staff did in such a compact amount of time....is phenomenal. And a final point on recruiting rankings: Bet if we went back and looked....Tulane's classes the last 4-5 years....would be nowhere near the top in AAC. And yet....Tulane put together a team that just finished 9th in the nation.

  43. It does and he seems to be underpaid. If recruiting is really successful he'll likely be the first one to get a raise.
    2 points
  44. We are definitely getting a great ROI with this one. I think in a year or two we are going to have to give him a significant raise if we want to hold on to him.

  45. Recruiting is like drafting players, some players will be better, others worse, than anticipated. It's really how coaches use them and develop them = wins/losses for the team that actually matters. Brock Purdy was literally a nobody at the NFL level until he got in games and was coached into confidence-building situations and now is a somebody = team wins. This recruiting class likewise can't really be judged until the coaches are judged by what they do with them, as in season results.
