  1. What they need to be most worried about is the head-to-head recruiting battles they lost to us in the last few weeks of the recruiting cycle...when we had a brand-new coach and they were coming off a conference title.

  2. Also remember the factor in that the number of recruits you got the boost you quite a bit in rankings... Disregarding the average player rating. Here are teams in the American or that are going into the American that our average player rating was higher than. FAU Rice Memphis Tulane ECU Temple Tulsa Navy

  4. I tend to focus on the average rating more that the ranking. 247 shows the class average at 84.17, which is comparable to AAC peers. UTSA and SMUt are unfortunately the two programs that had averages way above ours but everyone else was around what we got or lower. Even Tulane coming off that amazing season didn’t have a higher average, although admittedly they score more high end three stars but brought their average down with some lower ranked players at the bottom of the class. Pretty good class given the time frame.

  5. If the Memphis game really gave us insight on how we can compete in the AAC , then with a more consistent QB and a improved secondary we should be in good shape.

  6. For those that care/pay attention to recruiting rankings, 247 just updated the star rankings for our newest class. Good enough for top 100 in the country: https://247sports.com/college/north-texas/Season/2023-Football/Commits/

  7. I made the same observation. To note, to our higher average only includes the 7 players rated. If the other 6 receive low ratings due to being lower sought after recruits, that average will drop. Personally, I care little about stars. I care about how many other offers they had at some point and whether or not they actually make it to campus.

  8. Honestly, their success has help push our administration to get things done. Seems we have the right people in place who want to take winning at football serious.

  10. I decided to look back through our recruiting rankings on 247 through the years and discovered some interesting findings. Some of our most successful players were not rated very high coming out of high school and some of our highest rated recruits have never really contributed. Here are some that exceeded their rankings: Craig Robertson, 2 star/.7222 Lance Dunbar, 3 star/.8274 Derek Thompson, 2 star/.7889 Mason Y'Barbo, 2 star/.7870 Zach Orr, 2 star/.7667 Will Wright, Richard Abbe, Brelan Chancellor, Derek Akunne and Cyril Lemon 2 star/.7333 Lairamie Lee and James Jones, 2 star/.7000 Jeff Wilson, 2 star/.7676 Mason Fine, 2 star/.7743 E.J. Ejiya, 2 star/.7633 Kemon Hall, not rated Jayaire Shorter, 3 star/.8165 Deandre Torrey, 3 star/.8056 It is also interesting to note the top rated players in each class and how they panned out. Here they are in order from 2022 - 2003: Cam Robertson, Caleb Johnson, Eric Williams, Deonte Simpson, Alex Morris, Jalen Guyton, Nic Smith, Kevin Dillman, Caleb Chumley, Chad Davis, Boone Feldt, Freddie Warner, Antonio Johnson, Jeremy Bean, Riley Dodge, Jordan Scoggins, Kelvin Drake, Willie Ransom, Jamario Thomas and Michael Pruitt. The ones I put in bold are the ones I would say have lived up to their rankings, maybe not top in their class, but met or exceeded the expectations when they signed. My point is that this is such an inexact science. Some classes were full of players that never contributed at all, while some were full of lower rated players that far exceeded their expectations, Orr, Chancellor, Bird, Fine, Wilson, etc. Signing day is always fun, but it has always been my opinion to wait and look back at the end of their careers to see how they actually performed. Here's to everyone in the '23 class exceeding expectations.

  11. When the difference from 3rd to 10th is .74, what does that mean in real world, on the field terms? USF, 3rd place, had a .0087 (percent) better recruiting class than UNT, 10th place. Sounds like splitting hairs to me, and will boil down to coaching, assuming the star ratings are accurate.

  12. I’m not saying they’re going to collapse and yes, Traylor’s done a great job. Obviously…..he’s won 23 games in 2 years. Duh But what I’m saying is if they don’t start investing in an Infrastructure to support Traylor, this lightening in a bottle is going to fade. They may not collapse but it’s going to be difficult to maintain 10 win seasons when the competitive landscape around them is changing (especially in Denton, TX) And I would be worried if a coach started going public with some of these concerns. That’s usually the precursor to “fix this or I’m out” Any coach will generally say they’ll stay at a program as long as the school is committed. What he’s saying is UTSA’s administration needs to be more committed. And their other sports are such a disaster, what are they going to invest in? Surely they have to start getting better at basketball going to the AAC no? I would be a little nervous if I’m looking at the near future. Seems like as long as Traylor keeps winning 10-11 games every season all on his own, UTSA athletics will be fine. That’s a house of cards in my mind….

  13. Top 25 rankings should allow them to crush their recruiting class.... The question is can they keep it up with limited infrastructure Again....he's never played a QB that was his....They don't even know if he can recruit a good QB. If we can use this staff to improve the on field performance they won't be able to compete with us long term. Lack of infrastructure catches up eventually

  14. Would be freaking hilarious if in 2024 they did not schedule UT and OU to play each other. Make them use one of their OOC slots.

  17. Their fans were feeling some type of way today. UNT staff been on site for a month and beat out UTSA for a couple of guys they were really pushing for so I guess I’d be nervous too

  22. UTSA has never so clearly out-recruited us as they have this year. Make all the excuses you want, we are in no position to talk smack to them about recruiting. Might our class turn out better than theirs once they actually hit the field? Possibly. Will our advantages in staff help us to overtake them next year? Possibly. But for now, they get bragging rights over us.

  23. I don't see UTSA feeling the heat, I see them trying to take advantage of the situation and increase their funding.

  25. some of those replies in that twitter thread....yikes Do they not realize Morris and this staff have been here for all of about 8 weeks? "We still out recruited them" You're 23-5 over the past 2 years and have been recruiting this class for a year vs a staff taking over an underachieving team with a 8 week old staff. You should be crushing UNT, not losing recruiting battles to us. UTSA has hit their ceiling and their fans are starting to realize it. You're darn right they're worried.... All that and they still have never had a Jeff Traylor recruited QB lead their team.

  28. It's been mentioned before that recruiting rankings are flawed. If this staff can recruit talented prospects and develop them on and off the field, I will be happy with that. At the end of the day, I would rather win a bowl game, be competitive in each game, and not have any off the field issues. Morris was not my first choice because I wanted Fuente. However, after learning about Eric and the staff he hired, I'm 100% on board with the direction the program is going.

  29. Will be interesting to see how SMU's transfers work out. I didn't look at every player they got but out of the Miami transfers, only the RB got good playing time. One of their DL transfers was a 5th year junior last season and in 4 years of playing time, he has 60 total tackles and 3 sacks. I know stats don't paint the whole picture but that's not much production in 4 seasons. The QB transfer from Iowa has thrown about 150 total college passes, never hit 50% completion in a season, and has 3 TD passes to 4 interceptions in his time at Iowa. The Liberty transfers, Rahimi, Walker, and Meggisnon, appear to be ballers and should be impact players on defense. Guess we'll see how they work out but if our experience with transfers are any indication, all their P5 transfers who didn't do much at the P5 probably won't do much at the G5 either. I'll give a pass on some of their younger transfers like the LSU CB and A&M RB but it appears a majority of their transfers are P5 guys who don't have much playing experience at the college level.

  32. Exactly. Without the same resources they crushed the recruiting class. Their class was tops in both CUSA and the AAC.

  35. There's only so much junior colleges can do. We know we are superior to them in virtually everyway. We just needed to find a staff that could supplement this which we appear to have. Traylor is already crying about not having enough money to pay his staff. No doubt some P5 will come knocking on his door soon and he'll be flying out the door when he realizes they have reached the limits of their potential. You know I'll be dancing on their grave the day that happens

  37. Nice job @Brett Vito. Here are "my opinion" observations Not so sure SMU "landed" as "bank-rolled" the class. Their new moto seems to be "We can pay more than others" With the composite rating, not so sure they give a true indication on UNT's class. Rivals, which is included in the composites, did in all honesty what looks to be a half-assed effort. Other than Jayven Anderson and Brian Nelson (3-stars), they gave all of the other players the same 2-star rating, or still no rating. Taylor is seeing the impact of having a 2 million dollar contract at the G5 level. Takes up a lot of the budget. Perhaps instead of having 8 analyst (to go along with 3 GA's), he could reallocate some of those positions to recruiting staff.

  40. Dude, it’s North Texas. Despite what you might hear on this board, for a sporting event it’s a bargain. $380 for two seats on the second row right behind the defensive bench, plus a minimum $250 donation. There are cheaper options as well and those that don’t require the donation. Sign up!

  41. I loved this inaugural GOMEANGREEN National Signing Day Super Show. It has great information and very good production quality. Hopefully it will become an annual event next year. A lot has changed for us since the olden days of recruiting speculation on Harry's Mean Green board prior to signing day and the simple Signed NIL list in the newspapers.
