  1. Wish you well. We have some talent at linebacker but you have some experience there as well. Give it your best effort and I believe that you can succeed.

  2. KD was good for us, he's wasn't Zac orr though. I like what we have at LB. I think we'll be ok.

  3. Still can’t shake the disgust over this. I get it from his point of view but selfishly as a LOYAL fan who gets so rarely rewarded for it, his legacy is entirely tarnished for me. Hope that feels good for him.

  6. Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Abner Haynes has been honored by the University of North Texas with a new Unity Plaza. When you think of all of the great running backs employed by the Kansas City Chiefs over the years, it’s important to remember that the all owe something to the franchise’s first great back—‚literally the forerunner for them all—in Abner Haynes. Haynes was the first star running back of the franchise, going back to the days in which the team wasn’t the Chiefs and they were not yet located in Kansas City. Even with the Dallas Texans, Haynes was establishing himself as a beast in the backfield after winning the AFL’s first ever Rookie of the Year award in 1960. From there, Haynes would command the attention of defenses with a hearty 4.8 yards/carry average. Nearly 60 years after he was traded away from the Chiefs, he’s still No. 6 all-time on the team’s rushing yards list with 3.814. read more: https://arrowheadaddict.com/2022/06/24/former-chiefs-rb-abner-haynes-honored-university-north-texas/amp/

  7. I'm not overly optimistic. However, the man has taken us to almost 50% (5 of 12, I believe) of our bowl games. Yes, he's lost them all. But we were playing December football under him 5 of the 12 times in our school history. That's a tip of the hat to him, but also eye opening to how poor of a football program we have. I think if he continues taking his team to bowl games, especially given our history, you have to keep him on board. Eventually, the stars will align for that elusive 10-win season/bowl championship. With that said, he's done such a mediocre job, the moment we're 4-8 and watching from the couch he has to go. So, IMO, SL has put himself in a tough position and it's certainly of his own doings.

  8. Give the rolling eyes all you want to but the truth is when players leave this program people gush over them and follow them and give updates and yet when we sign players everyone want to point out their faults.

  9. September 27, 2008 sitting in Rice Stadium watching a team that was woefully ill-prepared lose 77-20. October 10, 2016. Was given tickets to the Club Level. My youngest son and I then sat through a complete thrashing to freaking Portland State. Having our administration relegate us to D1AA and the Southland Conference. Sitting in Fouts many times when I could have thrown handfuls of gravel and not hit a soul. We are down but far, far from an all-time low.

  11. The current one-time transfer exception is not good for college football. Even professional athletes have contracts that bind them to teams for certain time periods and allow organizations a fair opportunity to build a winning roster. A transfer model must be adopted that offers athletes the option to explore other opportunities, but still incentivizes schools to invest in and develop players. I propose a model where all players have the opportunity to transfer and be immediately eligible AFTER they have accumulated the equivalent of 60 credit hours at their current institution AND again after they graduate (if they still have eligibility remaining). If a player declines to transfer when they hit the 60 hours, that player loses the opportunity to transfer and be eligible immediately until they are a grad transfer. Any player may elect to transfer during the transfer window at ANY point in their career, but transferring before or after your “free” 60 hour transfer or “free” grad transfer will cause you to sit out a year AND lose a year of eligibility. Hardship waivers are no longer available for anyone. If your dog gets sick and you want to transfer, too bad. If someone in your social studies class looks at you funny, too bad. If your favorite coach gets hired somewhere else, too bad. You can still transfer during any transfer window, but there are consequences for doing so outside of your “free” opportunities. The transfer window also opens and closes in the spring. Let’s say it is open from February 15-April 15. If you opt to explore your transfer option when you are eligible, you cannot participate in offseason workouts or spring football at your current school and you must sign with your new school by X date to be eligible for the next football season. If you do not sign by X date, you must wait until the next year’s transfer window and lose a year of eligibility or you may drop down a level to Juco, FCS, DII, DIII and be eligible immediately. The 60 hours must be accumulated AT the current institution. If you graduate high school with 30 hours of college credit, that doesn’t count. Everyone starts at 0 towards the transfer requirement when they enroll at their school. This proposed transfer model allows players who fulfill their obligations as student athletes the freedom to fulfill their athletic potential while also rewarding schools for the investments they make in these players to adequately plan and build winning rosters.

  12. I had/have several jobs, one for 35 years with the same employer. Never had to sign a contract with any of them. I could quit whenever I wanted. An athletic scholarship, however, does require a contract, and a firm commitment on the part of both the school and the athlete. It's really not as hard to understand as you're making it out to be.

  13. They are all commitments. Sorry if you don't think players should be held accountable for their actions, but they are. At what age do you think it's ok for them to be treated and act like adults?? Welcome to the real world...

  17. Happy Day!!WICHITA FALLS, Texas — North Texas head soccer coach John Hedlund on Thursday was awarded as the Midwestern State University Student-Athlete of the 1980s on Thursday at the school's 2022 Nexstar Sports Awards held at the Wharehouse event center in Wichita Falls, Texas. The awards were given out in honor of MSU's centennial. Hedlund, who founded the UNT soccer program in 1995 and enters his 28th season as its head coach this year, was a Mustang men's soccer student-athlete from 1980-84 and graduated with a criminal justice degree. A two-time All-American, Hedlund guided his teams to the NAIA National Tournament three times, in the 1983 National Tournament Hedlund scored a record four goals in one game, earning Tournament Most Valuable Player. He scored 26 times and dished out 12 assists while wearing the maroon and gold. During his time in Wichita Falls, Hedlund also played for the U.S. National Team."Truly honored to receive this award tonight," Hedlund said "Some of my fondest memories throughout my career were wearing the Maroon and Gold!"After his time at MSU, Hedlund embarked on a successful 12-year professional career, before coming to North Texas. At UNT he has become the university's all-time winningest head coach by leading the Mean Green to 373 wins, 16 conference championships, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and zero losing seasons in his almost three decades in Denton.

  21. The difference between now and previous downtimes is that now just feels hopeless. Any decent player we get, will just leave us for more money. How much would a P5 school have paid for a sophomore Brandon Kennedy or a freshman Jamario Thomas or a junior Mason Fine? Hard to invest in this when you get gut-punched by your all conference linebacker transferring (at the end of June!). I don’t know what the solution is, or if there will be a solution. All I know is that since the selfishness of NIL and the transfer portal hit college football, I care about it less and less.

  22. Am I the only one that this guy started to lose a little bit of credibility when he never mentioned Tommy Bush, but then lost all credibility when he said we have one of the top WR corps in the Sunbelt?? Lol

  23. I have a suggestion. If a player transfers and gets a NIL at the new school, they have to pay the original school the cost of attendance for the time spent. If they are going to use as as farm teams, they should have to provide some compensation.

  24. Y'all are in an ugly place. Maybe it's wisdom, maybe it's stupidity, but with the money we are spending and with Wren in charge, I can carry confidence through this adversity unlike any previous administration/generation. When we were getting hew HCs under RV, usually after a awful situation that involved firing the previous HC, I never felt this confidence. I was always like, "Well, crap let's hope the next guy is a home run but it's probably just another next-in-line-to-be-fired guy."

  27. Well deserved. No need for a new $90 mil arena (save the money for a Real football coach!!), the SuperPit is a great venue, just needs some tweaks.

  28. I have absolutely no clue how nil works. But could we all donate a modest amount to make an nil deal to a player or 2. Maybe help keep our own in the wake of KD leaving? Not sure if that's even possible but would love to explore options.

  30. So you're confirming that you have worked the same job your entire life like an adult who stands by their commitment? You made a commitment to take on that job when you were what 15? 18? You're a person who stands by his word and doesn't break any type of commitment so I can respect that you're still working there or maybe you've recently retired. If your username is your graduation year then I am truly impressed, very few people stick with the same job for around 50 years even after graduating from college while working there, so kudos to you. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but again I will expect this same type of feedback from you next time we land a transfer from another school or next time the athletic department hires a coach who is currently working at another school. You can compare this to a job, marriage or whatever, but within the college football building there are players, coaches, trainers, administrators, etc. Why are the players the only ones who should be held to your standards?

  32. If this were about UNT Basketball (Mens & Womens) I would 100% be on board with it, because those programs are in a good place for something like this. However UNT's Football program has a lot of inconsistencies at this time, and throwing a few bucks at a couple players may not translate to wins.

  33. I was there and don't remember that at all. Did that involve more than 10 people?

  34. See I didn’t stick around for that, I left in the 3rd overtime, drove all the way to Coppell to a buddies house and it still wasn’t over. I was so disgusted over trading missed field goals and the abhorrent offense that I couldn’t watch anymore. I didn’t think that game was ever going to end because both offenses were so awful. I think I had Hopavac in a class at that time but I didn’t bring it up because he was a super nice guy and I didn’t want to make him feel worse than he probably already did.

  37. are we sure they won't hit the portal before it happens?

  38. Don't disagree with point of money rules, but do not agree with your analogy to pro sports. Pro football has a draft and salary limits which demonstrates a lot more fiscal responsibility than the free for all which is college football now. The pros have a system which a least tries to promote competition.

  39. Did you miss the part earlier this offseason where the most Name coach possibly in all of college football was complaining about not being able to compete with the NIL of certain other teams? One of those teams happens to be trying to pick up our All-CUSA linebacker from the portal as we speak. With the current landscape of college football, I’m with @greenminerthat we need a Carthel type who has won with less at all levels. Someone that wants to be at UNT and can win with whatever talent is available to him regardless of if SMU and the P5 steal our all conference players.

  40. There are a handful of reasons SL could be here. Reasons for firing a coach can be completely subjective. Just because I don't agree with the reasons that he was kept doesn't make them false.

  42. This should have been done a long time ago. IMO, as great as Mean Joe Greene was/is, the barrier Haynes & King broke through at North Texas is infinitely more important. And Haynes as a monster in his own right. Kudos to Baker & all involved in finally getting something like this done. Go Mean Green!

  43. I would think those expectations would increase the floor on morale making now easily higher than back then.
    1 point
  44. I disagree strongly. Fan morale in late 2006 and late 2015 were way below where we are now. People were saying the exact same stuff when the Murphys left and recruiting was in the cellar, then Gunnell signs on and then everything is hunky dory to them again. People are very wishy washy right now and want better but we are nowhere close to black jerseygate or being force fed Iowa City’s favorite son. Maybe you forgot what it felt like to end up with only 25 points and less than 270 total yards in a legit 7 overtime game against a team that would go 0-12. https://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=262800249 How is morale even close to approaching that or 2015 levels of disgust?

  46. Littrell or not, whatever. Doesn’t matter. This is an insanely flawed system that’s relegated us to a P5 farm system. It’s a joke this late in the game. Screw the system and screw him. I’ll say it. Don’t care. I’m pissed.
