  1. What is known is that SL being fired after last season would have cost us an extra $1.3 million just to get rid of him. Who knows what the buyout would be for the other coaches/staff members. And we know the Lovelace Family thinks of SL like he’s a son. Since they are amazingly generous here and give a lot of money to UNT, Wren and NS would be smart to not disturb that relationship, so as to not lose their contributions and commitments to UNT Athletics. When we nuked the fanbase in the 80s and early 90s with the idiotic 1-AA debacle for 12 years. Anyone that would care about this place AND be at an age to give meaningful dollars are in a very short supply, which is what we earned from that short-sightedness. And that’s why a group called the UNT 17 has so much clout around here.

  3. Spot on. I will also add that Tony Levine and Major Applewhite were both fired for going 8-5. Just having a winning record and going to a bowl isn't good enough. We also just started a med school as well. While we obviously have a College of Education and an Art College, they typically do not become future donors. STEM, business and other big money professions are what builds donors. UNT has the numbers and resources to succeed but the culture and the lack of competent leadership over the last 40 years is what holds them back.

  10. "At the end of the day you can practice well all you want but if you don't go out there and perform in a game, you know, it doesn't really matter." Mason Fine | May 30th Pre-Game - Saskatchewan Roughriders (riderville.com)

  11. The Riders are giving the backup quarterbacks lots of playing time in tomorrow’s preseason game so Mason is starting.

  12. While I agree that pre-season rankings fluctuate its clear that we are at the bottom of the well. Since Mason Fine graduated Littrell has been unable to recruit a suitable replacement nor have a winning season. I hate to see anyone fired but sports, just like all other endeavors , is based upon results . The long and short of it is that a change is necessary and I assume will occur at years end.

  13. I do like that Wren seems to have the winner in the wings. I am hopeful that when Seth’s time is up in Denton the next man up is solid motivated and hungry to unleash the power that is UNT. It’s never quick enough for us but worth the wait. GMG

  14. @untjim1995 folow-up question: do you think Wren and Co's decision to keep coaches around a little longer (like SL) is because of immediate circles? I know we don't have a ton of high dollar donors, but they are there and I wonder what they feel. i think I read a few months back that one of our donors really likes SL.

  15. UH does have those pro teams around for sure…and when they aren’t good, it shows dramatically in their attendance. But here is your difference…and @Cougar Kingwill back this up. UH made sports important decades ago. They are a huge school with a lot of alumni in business/science/engineering. Their football team has been ranked in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and the 20s. Their basketball program has been hugely successful at times I’ve the last 55 years, from beating UCLA in the first nationally televised game in the Astrodome, to Phi Slamma Jamma, to their team today that recently has gone to the Final Four and is currently expected to be Top 5 next year. How did they do it? They paid for and kept good coaches AND fired coaches who didn’t meet their expectations. Why did they do it? Because they have monied alumni who care…a lot more than a school based on getting teachers and artists educated, which is what we are proudly known for. Nothing wrong with it, either, but it doesn’t add up to having sports matter. We keep coaches until they are affordable to fire. There are exceptions, of course, like DMac being fired ASAP after the worst loss in modern college football history. But the reality is that Jimmy Gales, Corky Nelson, Dennis Parker, Matt Simon, Vic Trilli, Darrell Dickey, Todd Dodge, Tony Benford, and now, Seth Littrell, all got canned when there contracts were at an affordable spot to be let go…not a moment sooner. Look at the records of these people before they got fired—they all deserved to be let go before they actually got fired. Extra year(s) because of lack of money or lack of Will to spend it. UH don’t play that game…and we shall see if upstart UTSA will, either. We don’t know. UTSA is the new kid on the block, but they have a lot of corporate and civic sponsors that we don’t have and will never have. It’s what years of the EARNED APATHY you mentioned costs us today.

  16. This isn't bad at all. 2 October afternoon home games, all CUSA road games are Stadium, which means DFW area broadcast (Channel 21 or 27, can't remember). No weeknight games.

  23. I’m really looking forward to watching Mason get some more playing time which should happen in their preseason games on May 31st and June 3rd. The first one is against the defending champions so it will be a good test. He will know the playbook as well as the nuisances of the cfl game. He looks very confident and ready to go.

  34. More unnecessary redundant complaining for games that aren’t marketable because of our losing history. You want better than mediocre or bad TV slots? Find a better than mediocre coaching/recruiting staff and get rid of mediocre/bad ones before they can stack up 3 consecutive mediocre/bad seasons and go into possible 4th with 2 years remaining on their contract. The ratings for the games in question will be terrible if we perform as expected. These networks aren’t running a non-profit and Seth sure as heck isn’t paid like he is running one. Judy certainly has her faults. But if I were her I would not take gruff from an underachieving program who happens to be 2nd biggest school in my conference and the one in my largest media market not putting a winning team on the field casual college football TV fans want to see. We haven’t maximized our potential to help a conference sell it’s media right because we lose too much. Maybe if we got a P5 at home every other year in addition to maintaining out of conference home & home series with SMU, I would revel in condemning CUSA leadership & Judy. We didn’t do that and on top of that we haven’t replicated the conference dominance we had for over the Sun Belt in this new conference. Furthermore the worse loss in our post 1995 FBS level history was under the CUSA banner. Those PSU WRs blew by our defense while running over CUSA logos on our field to 66 points. So putting myself in Judy’s shoes our complaining hits a little like Fredo’s complaining about being passed over in The Godfather saga. Stop it whining about TV appearances when they don’t deserved exposure above Stadium TV, Facebook TV, ESPN 3 or some other relatively obscure streaming service. (We crapped the bed for holding up our end of the bargain for what should been a thrilling CUSA finale with more on the line for us than barely qualifying for a “participation bowl”). Responses to the original post should be thanks for sharing and/or what we are looking forward to see in these televised/streamed games. Citing the games with 0 coverage is fair too. But we are in no position throw shots at CUSA, Judy, or our TV partners for bad time slots.
